- AmyVernon, on 11/10/2008, -18/+195I honestly don't understand why folks are so upset about giving gay people the right to marry. I've heard all the "my religion says marriage is the union between a man and a woman only," but you know what? This country separates church and state.
- geoffgarcia, on 11/10/2008, -14/+94The pastor All Saints Church spoke out against Proposition 8, calling the religious community's support of it "embarrassing."
"It's very unfortunate and embarrassing that the Christian religion is in large part responsible for this act of bigotry," the Rev. Ed Bacon said after his sermon
--- my thoughts exactly - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -5/+60Kids commit suicide because people like you make their lives unbearable
- Zomgondo, on 11/11/2008, -1/+55Two of the more blatant lies told by the Yes on 8 campaign:
- Churches will be FORCED to perform gay marriage. Considering that churches can already refuse to marry a STRAIGHT couple for whatever reason they want, there's no good reason that they would suddenly be forced to perform gay marriages. The separation of church and state works both ways.
- Kids will be FORCED to learn that gay marriage is OK - the California Family Code allows people to have their kids taken out of class during family education if it's against their religious beliefs.
I think my favorite bit, though, was when they claimed that Prop. 8 was the only way to protect "free speech". - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -4/+52Why are we defensive - human rights are being violated - people are being hurt - kids are committing suicide - why?
Because of idiots like you - Alheithinn, on 11/10/2008, -8/+55I don't agree with you that most of the country is against it, though really, it would not matter if they were. Most of the county was once against giving women the vote; most of the country was once against giving African Americans the same civil rights Whites enjoy. The simple fact of the matter is that marginalizing any part of the population is wrong. The Constitution either grants equality to everyone, or it doesn't.
Nobody is asking churches to marry same-sex couples. That doesn't mean that they should not be allowed to marry outside of churches. That's the essence, after all, of Church-State separation.
Let's get with it America. Enough with the politics of exclusion and hate. Enough of bigotry. - Skeptica, on 11/10/2008, -18/+59Christians aren't going to lose any sleep over gay protests. If you want to fight, make it a meaningful war, make it hurt. Dig up their dirty laundry. Challenge their tax exempt status. The only good defense is offense.
- StaticThunder, on 11/10/2008, -11/+52All the money spent by Christians on preventing gay marriage could have been spent on feeding the hungry, or clothing the destitute. How far could those millions and millions spent on ads in CA have gone to do Christ-like work?
Instead, its MORE important that the gays not get tax breaks offered by the federal government to married couples, not be allowed to file a joint tax return, not be entitled to survivor benefits through social security, not be entitled to sick leave for an ailing spouse, and have to spend possibly thousands of dollars on legal fees to get the same durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney and will that a $100 marriage certificate could.
How they can look people in the eye after this I don't know. This really showed the true nature of "compassionate" Christianity "Do as I say, not as I do."
So much for render unto Ceasar. This is all about what Christians don't want gays to get from the secular government, and has nothing to do with keeping marriage sacred which is the covenant between husband and wife that the state has nothing to do with. - Bahamut240, on 11/11/2008, -3/+43I asked a super Christian acquaintance of mine (who is married) if they would support a proposition that said only Muslims could marry, and only if blessed by an imman (she is scared of Muslims), and in which her own marriage would be nullified. She responded "Of course not, because Muslims shouldn't be able to control what I do."
SWOOSH, right over her head. - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -2/+37@chaos
Homosexuality is not a choice - people like you cause the pain - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -6/+41Unfortunately, in this case, it doesn't. Marriage should be between whatever parties wish to get married and their chosen church. If that church doesn't want to marry you, find another one that will. Civil unions should be the only government-controlled aspect, only for tax reasons, and between any two people that want it.
- leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -14/+46LOL! Youre so clever with your jokes -
yes we are persistent - yes Ill bury you - yes Im gay
btw - being female I guess you also smoke poles and munch carpets? - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -5/+36@ChaosCorner
Slippery slope argument means you're a ***** bigot. Should we not have allowed interracial marriage because it led to discussing gay marriage? And an animal can't give its consent, nor can a car. Let's see a dog sign a legal document, you twit.
And gayism? I'd say that's fake because you just made it up. - Michael9636, on 11/10/2008, -4/+34"Marriage should be between whatever parties wish to get married and their chosen church" WTF? You mean atheists and those who do not have a "chosen church" cannot get married in the United States of America? Civil marriage should be provided by the State to ALL citizens, including those with or without faith. Religious marriage should be a separate step available as an option to those who choose it.
We must get to the point where we really do have separation of church and state and stop blurring the line between the two. We are not a theocracy. - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -6/+35Lets all guess the IQ of ChaosCorner

End of discussion - youre just a silly little girl - waste of time - granolajoe, on 11/10/2008, -7/+34You're assuming that he/she actually has sexual partners
- jjb123, on 11/11/2008, -1/+27Please don't feed the troll, everyone move along, nothing to see here.
- CVL4317, on 11/11/2008, -1/+26since when 10³ is part of 1-10? My algebra teacher failed me because of that.
- cmp1966, on 11/11/2008, -1/+24Okay, I know I'm repeating myself here, but maybe the arguments that helped change my mind will help change others. I'm not gay. I am religious. When AZ first voted to ban gay marriage, I voted for it. Between the first vote on it and the second, I discussed why with some friends of my who are gay and also listened to what they had to say. I came to change my mind, so although AZ also passed a similar prop, it wasn't with my vote. Here's why:
On one hand, my church holds that marriage is a sacred and that homosexuality is a sin. However, marriage is also a state function and that is something completely different. No state should deny- nor does it have the right to deny- any of it's citizens equal protections and rights for religious reasons.
The simple truth is I have no insight into being gay, I can't imagine what it's like. Many of the things my religion has said about it troubles me; I have trouble either wholly accepting them or wholly denying them. I can't see my friends burning in Hell for a relationship that is healthier than I see among some of my heterosexual friends. This is a conflict I can't answer.
But I am absolutely certain that we have separation of church and state. And I am greatly disturbed by any state that denies it's people civil rights for religious reasons. That is something that I see as a threat to everyone's freedom and rights. - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -4/+27You must hate yourself on a regular basis then
- ivencente, on 11/10/2008, -17/+40It's always the case -- you detest in others, what you don't like about yourself.
- geoffgarcia, on 11/10/2008, -1/+20Actually I'm not gay, I'm barely religious, and only mildly educated.
The most important lesson I ever learned is something that my mother often says "We are all God's creatures".
black, white, red, gay, straight, short, tall, fat, thin, man, woman, rich, poor, etc, we are all equal. - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -5/+24If you're profile pic is actually you, I'll prove I'm not gay.
*checks prices for last minute flights to CA*
OK, nevermind. I'll go get my civil union now. - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -3/+21Well trolled, missy. Although at this point I'm pretty sure you're a guy.
- voteobama4, on 11/10/2008, -10/+28We can take some solace in that when our generation is in power, we will look back on this time of anti-gay discrimination much like we look back with disgust at our segregationist past.
- GreatDrok, on 11/11/2008, -4/+21What I want to see is quite simple. Churches should not be allowed to say their faith is the truth. Quite simple. Advertising has limits on what you can say and if it is untruthful you'll get nailed for it. Why can churches claim to know the truth and no-one asks them to prove it? If it isn't provable, it isn't true. Call it faith, belief, whatever the heck you want but don't call it truth.
Oh, and stop touching little boys. - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -2/+19But this is consensual. Stop being a jackass.
- uelydnar, on 11/11/2008, -5/+21Wait, since when was marriage a religious/Christian act? People have been getting "married" before they've even heard of Christianity. Christianity can hold on to their god but marriage is a universal thing. I'm waiting for election 2012 :"Prop 9:Bans Atheists and other non-Christian religions from marriage."
- leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -1/+17LOL! Youre funny chaos - others like you worry me -= because they have a brain
You dont worry me - okyourturn, on 11/11/2008, -1/+16the people voting shouldn't have the say on whether or not to deny a minority rights.
- CVL4317, on 11/11/2008, -0/+15is it just me or ChaosCorner provides 50% of the comments in this submission?
- leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -3/+18"Actually, if you gathered an opinion of me and my thoughts on gay people based on my comments here, you would be totally off"
Then why dont you make comments that reflect your opinions? - mllawso, on 11/11/2008, -0/+15Are you trying to go for a new record in "Most Buried Comments?"
- peacelvr, on 11/11/2008, -5/+19It's interesting that exit polls showed 70% of black Obama supporters voted for Prop *. 53% of latino voters did as well. I don't think equating the sexual preference struggle with civil rights related to skin color is going very well.
- rhinofinger, on 11/11/2008, -6/+20Count me in as straight and digging you down, you intolerant *****.
- StaticThunder, on 11/10/2008, -3/+17You're the one who told me to find a retarded whore, and you're upset that I'm bashing you for your "opinion"? Thats a laugh. Quick, somebody call the WHHAAAAAMBULANCE. You're pathetic, even for a troll.
- StaticThunder, on 11/10/2008, -2/+16You're a troll, you've been reported dozens of times already, and your account will probably be banned by tomorrow. You want me to respond with reasoned argument to someone who isn't even going to be around to throw insults?
I'm not going to waste my time. I never said it was about love and sacred union on paper. - wunksta, on 11/11/2008, -1/+14who says that marriage HAS to be between a man and a woman? where does this definition come from? what business is it of the state who marries whom? they are consenting adults.
- mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -3/+16You'd best watch what you say about bacon here.
- lotar732, on 11/11/2008, -4/+171. Church and State should be separate.
2. The dictionary says nothing about marriage being about pro-creative potential.
3. Our country has changed a few things about fundamental rights since the founding fathers were around. You might want to look into that whole slavery thing.
4. Then why call it a civil union? Why NOT call it marriage?
By your logic, a woman who is infertile should not be allowed to get married. My Godmother had to adopt because she could not conceive... are you saying that her marriage should be annulled because she can't get pregnant? That is the dumbest argument I have heard against allowing gays the right to marry. - mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -5/+18You're right. But we're arguing about a word (whether marriage or union - they mean the same thing), which is ***** retarded and a waste of everyone's tax dollars.
I'm an atheist and if I get a union, I'll call it a marriage, and I'll call my partner my wife. Who gives a ***** if it's not government-approved nomenclature?
And if the ban mentions the phrase "sanctity of marriage," it should be immediately thrown out for breaching the separation of church and state... not that it shouldn't be killed anyways. - Langford, on 11/11/2008, -1/+14It seems a bit strange that the government recognizes any king of marriage, whether straight or gay. If marriage is a matter for the church, than the state needs to stay separate from it, right? I don't see how they can make laws about what is or isn't legal regarding marriage, without violating that separation. If some church someplace is willing to marry two things together, than they are married, at least in the eyes of that church. Any governing body that defines marriage on it's own rules, has become a church.
- dig1x, on 11/11/2008, -1/+14I concur.
But MARRIAGES -- a religious ceremony -- should have ZERO legal weight.
None.
So, yes. Lets have Civil Unions -- which confur legal status, and marriage, which means nothing legally. - Typhoon2009, on 11/11/2008, -3/+15Marriage is sacred... 50% of the time. Seriously, the whole "OMG IT IS A SACRED DEFINITION, BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN" is the most ***** hypocritical stuff I've ever heard. Explain to me why my STRAIGHT parents, and why many of my friends' STRAIGHT parents are ***** divorced. Sacred my ***** ass.
I'm still surprised that Prop 8 passed. I can understand this sort of stuff passing in Alabama etc, but in freakin' California?! The supposed 'Left Coast'? - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -4/+16@ChaosCorner
You really are a silly little girl arent u!!
review this and try to learn logic:
http://www.bidstrup.com/phobia.htm - fuse13, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12yeah he is a pedestrian troll and he is trying too hard. yawn.
- wunksta, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12being free of discrimination is a right. this violates that right. the state has no right to say that two consenting adults cant be married. if a church wants to wed them, will the state shut it down? how is that right? where are they getting this definition of marriage? why are they enforcing it?
it all goes back to "traditional values" of christians. the state has no business in enforcing such views. - leatherscot, on 11/10/2008, -4/+16@chaos
Ah - sorry - I should have realized that you dont fall for logic - you didnt even read it did u -
