Church of Scientology's 'Operating Thetan' documents leaked
wikileaks.org — Wikinews has obtained Operating Thetan (OT) documents of the Church of Scientology which were leaked via Wikileaks. Although some portions of the manual have been leaked previously, this is believed to be the first time the full unedited version has become publicly available.

- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -0/+17It's like any other cult. It finds people that need something to believe in, and warps them so that they feel that if they stop believing that their life will be meaningless, and so even if they start having doubts they push them back and rationalize so that they stay on the same track. It takes a *very* rational mind to stay away from such things actually. Have you tried giving up alcohol completely? Or playing video games if that's your thing? It's very hard to give up something you know isn't in your best interest when it's such a big part of your life.
- schizogony, on 04/14/2008, -1/+59Not mindless, but brainwashed. Scientology uses tried and true methods of brainwashing that Chinese imprisonment camps used in WWII. It's the 12-hour sessions of your "auditor" asking you hundreds incriminating questions that break down your psyche coupled with hours and hours of scolding you and starting over every time you hesitate on any question for more than a few seconds.
Also, I've read that part of the brainwashing is telling you to do something that you can't do, then failing you for failing. One example is your auditor demanding that you talk to an ash tray and tell it to float. Hours and hours of this go by and the ash tray, of course, never floats. You get punished for this and have to do a week of 12-hour days repainting a freshly painted basement with other failures until you work your way up to where you were, all the while paying the fees.
This, my friends, is brainwashing and conditioning. This is how Scientology removes one's self and takes it as their own.
And the very first thing they instill in your subconscious is that whatever L.Ron Hubbard wrote.... is absolute fact.- schizogony, on 04/14/2008, -2/+29Whoever buried my comment has to be a Scientologist because this is the truth straight from people who used to be brainwashed by the cult.
- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -3/+13I honestly have come to think digg just has lots of users than mod down every single thing. A new form of trolling I guess...
- BeefBaron, on 04/14/2008, -7/+15"And the very first thing they instill in your subconscious is that whatever L.Ron Hubbard wrote.... is absolute fact."
Sounds like the Bible, the Torah, the Koran...- schizogony, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13Well, with those books, it's your choice to believe it and through your own faith that you carry on that way. In Scientology, the brainwashing techniques strip you away of your feeling that you even have a right to choose.
The brainwashing has addictive qualities in that some ex-cult members have said the E-meters themselves are meant to provide a very subtle yet pleasing and addictive shock through your hands that subconsciously makes a person need it. They NEED that E-meter but what comes with it just happens to be that brainwashing: the scolding, the questions, the discipline for doing nothing wrong, etc.
Another thing I should've mentioned in my first post was also that I've read first-hand accounts of how the brainwashing itself just melts your mind in such a way (through the repetition and the odd disconnect of getting that pleasing shock by doing something wrong) and leaves you feeling euphoric. Right after a mult-hour audit session, the victim will feel high, out-of-body, otherworldly, so pleased that they kind of forget that insanity that just happened to them. Whatever the auditor tells them is fact during this time seems to solidify itself into their subconcious as fact, no matter what is said. And what is said is "L. Ron is Source" or something like that. Whatever he wrote (no matter how drunk and high on LSD he was at the time) is absolute fact. All who oppose are trying to suppress the truth and should be attacked. Before even being taught what L. Ron WROTE, you're taught that it is fact.
So for Scientologists it becomes like an involuntary reaction, a instinctual act to attack someone who has anything bad to say about their company (I won't call it a religion) or L. Ron himself.
As for Christianity, Judaism, etc, it's pretty much believe it or don't. Sure some preachers on TV get a little dramatic, are in it for just the money and all that (and, yeah, I'm sure there are some corrupt people posing as leaders of Christian churches who do use brainwashing in some form) but for your basic Christian church, it really is your choice to make. You're not stripped of your free will.
You decide that God's word is fact. Scientology decides for you that L. Ron is "Source."
- schizogony, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13Well, with those books, it's your choice to believe it and through your own faith that you carry on that way. In Scientology, the brainwashing techniques strip you away of your feeling that you even have a right to choose.

- unicronband, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Oh man, Super Power Rundown is awesome.
I really like this little bit, explaining the Tom Cruise Oprah couch stunt:
"At some point during the running of this series of processes this person will reach a state wherein they are speechless. They will laugh with wild abandon. Their TA will be floating! They will probably also be exterior and will be unable to communicate in words what they are experiencing. This is the end result of the Super Power Rundown. It is rare for this to occur prior to the running of the last flow of this series of processes, but if it occurs then acknowledge the win."

american idol is a hit TV show. I dont put anything past the herd mind anymore.- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1American Idol is a waste of time to watch, but it's just a show with full-of-themselves teenagers (what teen isn't) that can sing at least a little and I think it gets grouped with dumb Americans far too often. Hell, even I'll watch it if I'm bored enough. I think the real point is that people that succumb to marketing/sales tricks used by shows like American Idol will probably also succumb to the tricks that cults use because both rely on taking advantage of our subconscious tendencies, among other things.
- Extraneous, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1All hail the zerg overmind!! *drool*
- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -16/+7Actually, these OT materials are not just silly - they are genuinely dangerous to anyone stupid enough to actually try them out without undergoing extensive preparation. I know this, because I have seen the disastrous consequences of people who have done them and failed to do them properly. I feel I have a duty of care to others to warn them that playing around with this ***** can actually do you a serious damage.
Not many people know this, but the CO$ has special "places" where they send people who have mental breakdowns while doing these OT levels, particularly OT III. There is one of these "places" everywhere in the world where the OT levels are delivered, ie. near every "Advanced Org".
People who attempt OT III without being properly "trained", or who just have undetected mental and emotional weaknesses which make them susceptable to mental breakdowns can come completely unhinged by doing these processes. People become totally fixated on hunting down these "body-thetans", and like a dog who goes crazy chasing his own tail, they spin in and literally lose their minds.
This is no exaggeration. By completely unhinged, I mean COMPLETELY, that is, they gradually become raving lunatics, and finally, their minds snap, and they are no longer home. They become unable to do anything for themselves, including feeding themselves or getting themselves out of potentially life-threatening situations. If they are not "baby-sat" 24/7, and taken care of very very carefully, they can and do die. This is almost certainly what happened to Lisa M. It has definitely happened to many others.
It can take about 6 months for people to come back to normal after one of these episodes, if they ever do. This is one of the best-kept secrets of Scientology, even though it's an open secret.
Whatever people may be thinking when they publish these materials, you must realize that they are actually inherently dangerous. Dangerous in the same way that taking drugs is dangerous. Not everyone takes drugs, and not everyone who takes drugs will lose their minds, but enough do, and that's why we police drugs and keep them out of reach of children.
If you think I'm kidding, or giving you some boogeyman stories to scare you, then think about this; the CO$ makes huge money from selling these materials and getting people through these levels. Contrary to popular opinion, they are extremely careful and selective about who they let do this - just because you have money doesn't mean you are allowed to do these OT levels. They spend months training people on how to audit them, and yet, in spite of all of these precautions and having expert supervision every step of the way, they STILL ***** up, and people STILL lose their minds and die from this *****.
Do you think the CO$ *likes* it when people like Lisa M. die on them? ***** of course not! They don't need that *****. But in spite of taking every conceivable precaution, it still happens. So, what do you imagine would happen to some kid who reads this stuff off the Internet and starts to believe it just for perversity, and try it out just for kicks? Yup, you guessed it. They can end up worse off than Lisa, or in a mental institution if they're lucky.
See, those of you fighting the CO$, you clearly have a lot more to learn about your enemy. You are certainly hurting them with these leaks, but who else are you hurting? If you really knew what you were doing, you would attach a warning label like this to every copy of these documents you sent out.- Professr, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8Wow. I almost feel for you...
- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -2/+16testcase, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. - testcase, on 04/14/2008, -3/+2Actually, I just realized... you're a Church PR lurker aren't you? Probably OSA. Nice try at dead-agenting this, but it's true and you know it. It's only a matter of time before the the Church gets rolled up by the feds like a posse of polygamists. If I were you, I'd get as far away from them as I could.
If you're not OSA, and you're just a dumb kid, then you won't know what I'm talking about, so just forget it and go back to sleep.- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Don't get your panties in a twist. I was quoting the principal in Happy Gilmore for a laugh.
OSA? Lets see... ah. http://www.anti-scientologie.ch/dictionary.htm#O
Nope, not OSA. Not even affiliated with the cult in any sense of the word. I'm also not a kid, and I don't appreciate the implication that I am immature.
My comedic jab at you was directed towards your warning that the text can take people in and drive them crazy. I would submit that the people were already unstable and the exercises would be the breaking point, but other things could be as well. Ever been to godhatesfags.com? Same deal. Unstable people getting absorbed by their self-serving beliefs. - testcase, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2liquidpele: There is a time and a place for comedy. I have a great sense of humor personally. But this LOLCAT ***** can go too far, especially when you're LOLling around and joking about things that are deadly serious. That's a sign of immaturity.
It has become very obvious to me that you guys have no idea who or what you're ***** with when it comes to the Church of Scientology. I'm not a Scientologist. But having had some considerable experience with them in the past, I have a healthy respect for what they can do if they get really upset and manage to get a fang into you. Even wounded and dying, they are formidable.
But you... you attempt to make witty jabs about things you know absolutely nothing about, and you guys prowl Digg with your bury squads to try and shut down anyone who doesn't congratulate you effusively in perfect 4chan. You have no idea actually how boring you guys really are.
Everything you know comes from the Internet, and if you can't find it on the Internet, it doesn't exist. For example, you tried to look up "OSA" in a half-assed on-line French Scientologie dictionary, and because it didn't come up, you claim OSA doesn't exist.
Are you truly stupid, or just lazy? For your information, "OSA" stands for "Office of Special Affairs", a very powerful and no-nonsense division of the CO$. They are the people who will ***** your ***** up if you get too annoying in your attacks against the Church.
Because you don't know that, and because you don't know a whole world of other important stuff, anything you say on this topic is worthless. Worse than worthless actually - downright harmful.
You're not smart, you're not clever, you're just trying to make snappy comments out of ignorance. I'm trying to help people by giving them a serious warning, based on real-world facts, and all you can do is quote from "Happy Gilmore"?
My warning to people is a serious one, because I have observed first hand how people have been harmed by messing around with this stuff. It is not unlike what I have also observed first hand when people lose their minds with drugs. It doesn't happen every day, but it does happen.
If you don't know about something for a fact, at least be smart enough not to ***** comment about it. And next time, be careful who you call an idiot, even in jest. - liquidpele, on 04/15/2008, -4/+0testcase,
1) Never been to 4chan (don't even know where it is).
2) I actually don't know what a lolcat is, although I've heard it mentioned a lot by very annoying posters. You say my joke was a sign of immaturity, but it had a point (which I explained) and I stand by it. Saying I'm immature is, again, just a weak point to try and weaken my argument and shows that you don't actually have any good rebuttal.
3) Don't make assumptions about me or my intelligence, doing so is an unfounded attack and makes you look like an ass.
4) The page I linked to defined OSA down the page, don't be such a prick.
5) I get the feeling you're not as smart or "in the know" as you think you are, but I never called you an idiot, you read into that yourself. Perhaps you think you are an idiot subconsciously?
In short, stop trying to be such a know it all, and stop making wild accusations about those who don't agree with you. Scientology is dangerous, we all get that. So is playing with guns or a million other things, so stop acting like Scientology is the beginning of the end. Perhaps you do have personal experience with them, but since you attacked me personally instead of backing up your claims with proof or at least a story about your experiences, I can only assume you're full of *****.
- liquidpele, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Don't get your panties in a twist. I was quoting the principal in Happy Gilmore for a laugh.
- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -6/+3Listen, it doesn't matter how many of you and your anarchist pals get together, digg people down, and think happy thoughts about information wanting to be free, facts are facts, and reality is reality.
You don't know what really goes on in Scientology, behind closed doors, you only think you do. It is actually worse than you imagine. Liquidpele, especially you, wishin' don't make it so, and calling someone an idiot is NOT an argument, unless you're 12 years old.
You kids have simply got to grow up.- jooje, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2What you preach here testcase was the same they preached when they burned the Libraries of the Persian empire.
Fear of text while only thing that is dangerous is ignorance.- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4No, jooje, I am not saying be afraid of the text. I am saying, "Don't do what the text says to do." BIG difference.
There is no "magic" in those documents to be afraid of. I am simply saying that there are some people who will try to actually follow the instructions in those documents and attempt to do those "OT Levels". Some of those people may very well get badly hurt. In much the same way that some kids flip out and develop psychosis and neurosis from messing around with spiritualism and witchcraft - not because there is a devil, but because they are not mentally strong enough to not get carried away by it.
- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4No, jooje, I am not saying be afraid of the text. I am saying, "Don't do what the text says to do." BIG difference.
- Extraneous, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2I'm not sure which is worse: that you admit to restricting information you claim is the truth or that you really believe it to begin with.
- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1First of all, I didn't say I believed in Scientology. I just warned people not to try this stuff for themselves. It is dangerous if not done properly, and can be dangerous even if done properly, for reasons beyond anyone's ability to predict or control.
Likewise, I also didn't say to restrict it - I have nothing to do with that. What I actually said was, it should be accompanied by a WARNING. - Extraneous, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2I'm not sure which is worse: that you actually believe this *****, or that you're still trying to save face.

- computergod, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2For those wondering, I ran testcase through a digg checker, and he has no indications of having an agenda for a specific cause, posts a lot, and has been a member for quite some time.
That said, I completely disagree with him in terms of the damage just reading something can do.- testcase, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Thanks computergod. Just to set the record straight though, I did not say just *reading* stuff can do you damage, although of course that depends on what you're reading. I am talking about people who actually try to do things, not knowing that doing those things can cause you harm.
Think of the kid who reads a story about bungeyjumping and tries to make a bungy cord from old innertubes and jump off his roof. Well, what do you think is going to happen? Likewise, people trying out these OT Levels, which promise "Super powers" can actually really ***** themselves up. Because even highly prepared and highly trained Scios ***** themselves up attempting this ***** under clinical conditions. I have observed this for myself. It IS dangerous stuff if you do not know what you are doing.- phronko, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2I don't think people are as fragile as you make them out to be.
If there are people that get ***** up by trying a bunch of fictional garbage, they probably would have gotten ***** up by reading Harry Potter and trying to cast spells, or they would have found some other religion to ***** them up. There is nothing special about Scientology's brand of *****. - testcase, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2phronko: Normally, I would say you are right. But the nature of this Scio stuff is very different to some sort of book of witchcraft or something like that. I just used that as a common analogy.
First of all, these Scio processes are designed for one purpose, and one purpose only - to alter your mind. Though it is dressed up as spirituality, it is really a highly focussed set of psychological routines which work very deeply on the mind. These processes exploit artifacts of the way the brain works and processes information which Hubbard discovered but did not fully understand. He just knew, like a lot of NLP researchers "just know" that if you do certain things, the mind will suddenly change, in a snap, and the person will suddenly think and feel completely differently than they ever have before.
Now that can be great, if it works, but if it doesn't work, it creates a massive mess in that person's mind and psychie. When this happens in Scientology, the person is said to be "red tagged", which means basically that it's an emergency. They have to be fixed up, and very fast, before they get worse. In very serous cases, the person can actually have what is called a "psychotic break", and then they actually can't be fixed by auditing in Scientology, they have to be taken somewhere where they can (hopefully) "destimulate" over a period of days, weeks, even months. This is what I meant by taking people to certain "places".
Now, when a kid or inexperienced person says to themselves, "Hey, I think I'll try and get these Super Powers... I'll just follow these instructions in these materials I just downloaded," that's when you have a problem. Because if they do it, and something goes wrong, and they end up "red tagged", there is no one there to help them who knows what has happened. All they have is this kid who is raving and running around naked, scratching his skin off. What are the authorities going to do? Use your imagination.
I really want to stress that it is not because the person is mentally "fragile" that they come unglued like this, any more than a person who swallows a whole bunch of sleeping pills is "fragile" just because they fall into a coma. This Scientology stuff is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to alter your mind. How much clearer can I make it? That's what it's for. But it's meant to be used under careful supervision. If it is not used under careful supervision, people can and do get hurt. - phronko, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1But see, you're operating on assumptions that this crap actually has any psychological basis. It doesn't. It's just a bunch of made up words. I could blab about how muggles get transcombobulated and need to go to special rementification centres to get cured, but it doesn't actually mean anything. It doesn't matter if it was designed to alter your mind if it doesn't do so any more than the baseline of any fiction that people go crazy over.
- phronko, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2I don't think people are as fragile as you make them out to be.

- bleedtheworld, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4I agree with the Mass Effect comment, but really this "religion" I guess, works like any other. It gives people a way out, a way to believe in something other than what ever everybody else believes in. Also, BTW, L Ron Hubbard was a SCIENCE FICTION writer, if everyone can't see that this whole religion is based on some kind of science fiction story, you guys are tools, the people that believe in it now may be brain washed, but if you look at it this really seems like a big joke to me on Hubbard's part. I don't know be it's just me.
- BlackDaniel, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4You have to give it to the CO$-fags though!
They have managed to take a book with less actual inspirational value than a turd and scammed 1000s of people out of their life's savings... Not too many cults managed to reach that level of evil! - abacadabbra, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1scary
- stupidStan, on 04/14/2008, -7/+10You can say the same thing about Islam or Christianity.
First, you must realise that the whole WORLD is brainwashed to not think that their myths are 'normal'. Even as an atheist, I have been brainwashed to think that Christianity is 'normal' since I am surrounded by it night and day.
Not flamebait, just trying to put things into perspective, it's so easy to point at something else and laugh when the same finger can just as easily be pointed right back at you.- Gozchev, on 04/14/2008, -5/+1Yea, but having to PAY to become *enlightened* not part of the religions you mentioned. Sure I might give money to my church to help it run, but in return, I get to hear, (this is true), interesting sermons on all aspects of life, I get to hang out and be with friends, and it is easier to find organizations that help people and donate my time to them. Though another problem is that people may not quite understand what is happening here...Many people go to church nowadays for the social connecting and not just fundamental beliefs, so although there may indeed be brainwashing within the cO$, it may not be the image of a room full of people in chairs listening to a loudspeaker but rather more subtle things mentioned before, like making it seem like what they are doing is right and that they need it to feel well....
- siszam, on 04/14/2008, -20/+3About as mindless as those who believe a random "Big Bang" created everything. If you don't believe in God and that Jesus is Lord and Savior you're just worshiping yourself and your own foolishness. That's true for Scientology, Atheism or any of the egocentric cults.
- Freezingmoose, on 04/14/2008, -3/+9*sigh* This is why people hate Christians. Why you gotta be like that, siszam? Why you gotta be trolling for unhappiness?

HOWEVER; if each of you send me TEN DOLLARS, I will offer you the opportunity to survive the Reaper attacks at least SIXTY seconds longer than everyone else, guaranteed; or your money back! - Vash63, on 04/14/2008, -2/+3Have you ever read the bible, Quran or any other major 'holy' book? Not to defend scientology, but it isn't like the other major religions aren't just as crazy.
Hmm, alien populating our planet from other planets, or mythical, invisible and extremely concerned with not being detected invisible man creating the entire universe in 7 days? I wouldn't say it's any worse than any other major religion as far as the core beliefs. Now, the cult-like practices are a bit worse than most Western religions... but that's a different beast altogether. - senatorpjt, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I'd be willing to bet that 99.9% of the people who join Scientology have no idea about this stuff (which is probably why people want it made public.) They show up in places with a "free stress test" and basically trick people into it. At least in the beginning, they're more practicing medicine without a license, as they more attempt to pass themselves off as some sort of therapy operation - although they're very careful not to do so (It's actually happened a few times - there's a disclaimer on the bottom of the E-meter - which of course people at the "free stress test" can't see - saying it's not a medical device).

There's quite a bit of brainwashing that goes on before they ever spring this stuff on you (you have to reach Clear which basically means your brainwashing is finished). The auditor simply maintains his TRs and lets the person have his win. Do not end the session until the laughter stops as this will also tend to invalidate the person and his win.
The laughter can go on for some time. Perhaps up to an hour. Be sure and just be there with the person during this win and not end the session until the laughter has subsided."

From a christian point of view, forgiveness does not give one a license to do wrong, and is greatly frowned upon... You'd know that if you'd put any time into being open minded about religions.
But, there are jerks everywhere, and people who will use religion as a means of political gain (See: Crusades, Jihad, BushCo, etc). The religion is just as much a victim of these people as the citizens who listened.

- Berkana, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9Moxon, the CoS's in-house attorney, is a high ranking Scientologist who was implicated in Operation Snow White, the famous and massive infiltration of the US government involving some 5,000 Scientologist agents, break-ins at 135 government facilities and embassies, etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_snow_white - SpaceMonkeyZero, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2If you call and harass them, they'll probably trace your phone # and get your name and address and send you a bill for their time, and then take you to small claims court (in a court somewhere far away from where you live) when you don't pay. An army of Hollywood lawyers turned cultists using the system against dissenters is very evil. CoS ruins lives. They don't need to resort to murder that often to ruin lives of ordinary folks.
In other words... use skype!

Scientology sure is lame, but how about leaking and publicizing the invoices that tell the world how much Haliburton is charging our military (US tax dollars) for a can of Coca Cola or a bag of laundry. I promise you the read will be more interesting than this sci-fi garbage.
(prepares for digg down)- mooseofshadows, on 04/14/2008, -2/+14We deal with those problems too, but one at a time man. There's more to scientology than just lameness. Scientology charges you hundreds of thousands of dollars to basically make you insane, and then once they're done, they, in some cases, kill you. So please, don't derail this train when it's headed somewhere good.
- and303, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4Scientology charges me nothing because I'm not stupid enough to give them any money.
Haliburton charges me plenty and I'll go to jail if I refuse to pay them through the IRS.
Finally, this train isn't headed anywhere. All your doing is giving them free publicity and encouraging people to read their religious documents. Want to destroy a cult? Ignore the ***** out of it.- stfucupcake, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Stop bitching about inroads made in the last few months. Llaugh at the wobbling tower & join in the celebration when it crashes.

Good luck with that.- and303, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1What wobbling tower? Do you actually think Scientology is going to just give up because a couple hipsters are hanging out at its offices?
The whole thing is completely contradictory to begin with. Trying to shut down a religion/cult/business/whatever and claiming free speech as your reason. That's like shooting a bunch of soldiers to "protest war and violence". I think you're a fool if you agree to be on either side of the table.

- BobScratchit, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3NERDS!!!!!!
- Berkana, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6I agree, but here's my explanation as to why people have risen up to fight the CoS: the CoS lashes out viciously to silence reporting about their abuses. Halliburton simply doesn't give a damn. If Halliburton sent cease and desist notices to YouTube for every video that attacks and exposes Halliburton and Wikipedia and Wikileaks for every embarassing document exposed, you'd better believe that there would be a grass-roots internet immune reaction against them.
It is not that Scientology is the greatest evil, it's just that their ridiculous sensitivity and litigious tactics, though somewhat effective at silencing dissent off-line, have the opposite effect on the net, where memes and free speech they're trying to suppress spread harder the more they try to stamp it out.
- mooseofshadows, on 04/14/2008, -2/+14We deal with those problems too, but one at a time man. There's more to scientology than just lameness.
