- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -31/+102It's too bad the Christian's motivation for supporting Israel is to hasten the End Times and bring the destruction of all non-Christians, including Jews.
It's so bizarre to be still living in the age of mythology. - StanleyKoolPrik, on 10/10/2007, -7/+56Meanwhile, the Buddhists have just joined forces with the Decepticons.
- superfusion, on 10/10/2007, -23/+54This is why I love Jewish people. Jews: "Hey, some fat man in Colorado just gave us a million U.S. dollars; that will help improve our national security." Christians: "Invisible people from outer space are coming soon to end the world!!"
- ncairns, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17If you criticize *a* Muslim, or a subset of Muslims, in an intelligent, articulate manner, legitimate political discourse can come from that.
If you criticize 'Muslims,' as if they comprise a homogeneous population, then you are a racist. - fisj139, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Yay! Let's blanket statement all Christians Woooooo.........not
- OneHine, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18@bearcliner
It's for the same reason that anyone who criticizes US foreign policy is automatically labeled "anti-American": these people can't defend their points and so must turn to vilifying anyone who disagrees. - g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17I don't think any criticism of Israel constitutes 'Israel-bashing', but a fair number of comments in threads like these clearly cross that line. What is truly sad is that there are always a few that cross the like into being overtly anti-semitic (and no, I'm not equating criticism of Israel with anti-semitism here, I'm talking about real bigotry). Add to that that I found the article interesting and that's about the extent of my agreement with homerj14.
You want to call him out? Save it for when he's said something blatantly wrong, not for something like this where he's simply voicing a reasonable concern. He did not call anyone who disagrees with him a "basher". - askjeffro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Lets be fair, CERTAIN Christians... It is possible to be Christian and not subscribe to all bible "teachings". Christian - follower of Christ, thats it. Christ didn't say anything (explicitly) about the "End times". In fact, I'm pretty sure most of his teachings were on living today... It's a shame more Christians don't actually listen to what Christ had to say.
- martalli, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17I find it odd that American Christians overlook that the Christians in the Holy Land are Palestinians...
- spoiled1, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Well, refuge camps and so called "Security Wall", very subtle baby steps to make the world's largest prison, its almost like death camps.
- Kles, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17When that damned temple goes up and nothing happens, I'll be laughing.
- TubaTechno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Except you guys automatically go on the defensive as if you didn't know the difference between "bashing" and "disagreeing"......you're making stupid comments by just being ignorant.
- commernie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12But it's not bashing. There are reasons for the criticism. People's disapproval of Israel's policy against the Palestinians is what's behind the most of the criticism. When you call it "bashing", you are undermining the reasons behind the criticism, and that's ***** up.
- g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Your problems don't stem from the definition of "Muslim", rather they arise from your understanding of "Bronze Age". You might say that Jews hold Bronze Age fantasies as truth. You might also say that Christians hold fantasies from Classical Antiquity as truth. You could even go so far as to say that Muslims hold fantasies from the Early Middle Ages as truth. But to say that "Muslims hold bronze-age fantasies as truth" is stretching things to the point of untruth.
Are you a racist? Probably not. Are you as clever as you think? I'll leave that for others to judge. - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I was going to call you a bigoted clod, but then I read this: "A recent poll found that 59 percent of American evangelicals believe Israel is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy."
- CatManDoIt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9What is anti-Semitic about this story? It is a CNN story and the title is completely accurate.
- Plaztikman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9These people are raising money to support colonies. What the article doesn't tell you is that these colonies are built on another nations territory. If you support this idea, then let me give you an example so that you will better understand what is happening.
In 1846 the United States and Mexico went to war over Texas. Needless to say we won that war. Texas has many Mexican immigrants and what if they started their own neighborhoods, schools, and community within the United States. All the signs are in Spanish, schools are taught in Spanish, and the Mexican government sends troops into Texas to help defend these colonies against the United States and various Texas militias. When you flip the script, you get a better understanding of what's going on.
Esqueleto - "I don't know why you always have to be judging me because I believe in science!" - JeanNarH, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Come on !!!
Using religion to raise money to finance colonization wich is stricktly forbidden by the Geneva Convention, when Israel itself deny the existence of the colonization of the Palestinian territories....
Seriously, won't anybody freaking wake up on this planet?! - InetRoadkill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Your grasp of history is seriously retarded.
The Israelis are the ones who flooded into the region from europe and russia in the early 1900's and overthrew the govt in palestine. The palestinians have been there for centuries. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12these people can't defend their points and so must turn to vilifying anyone who disagrees what? I havent said anything about the article yet and I'm already being bashed ... Im saying theres a crew of more than 50 kids here on Digg who turn there comments into nonsense and Israel bashing.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14Am a bigot if I say that Zionism has always been a mistake, that Zionism is a crime against humanity and the Bible isnt a land deed?
- kingraoul3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Were they all formed by booting people who lived in those countries off of their land?
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14Or it could be the same reason that anyone who criticizes Muslims is automatically called a racist? You see how this could go on forever?
- CatManDoIt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Responding to racism with racism isn't a productive solution.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8but APARTHEID IS FUN!!!
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You've mistaken my lonely attempt at companionship for an actual political position. Perhaps I should rephrase...
Israel has a huge number of innocent and precious college-aged coeds toting guns and bibles around. If dissolving their nation meant getting them out of harm's way and into the apartment next door...I would support it based simply on that benefit to American society. And, by American society, I mean me. - sirlancelot88, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9They dont need improvements in national security, the IDF is already one of the best-equipped militaries in the world. What they need is to stop bullying their neighbors and come to an accord for peace in the Middle East.
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"If it wasn't for what the Jews brought to Christianity, there would be no Christianity,"
You mean Christ? - crazihouse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I couldn't agree with you more. Israeli settlements are a great detriment to all Palestinians and are ILLEGAL by any standards. Nothing but a land grab.
- g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Here's an (admittedly skewed) sample of comments from below. I think these are what is being referred to as 'bashing':
0megaMan: "Zionist scum." ##definitely Israel-bashing, quite possibly anti-semitic, there is no criticism to be found anywhere in this statement, just name-calling.
EpicLulz: "why so glum, jew? didn't kill enough palestinians today?", "if only hitler didn't invade russia..." ##not even remotely fair to Israelis, also hateful racist rubbish.
professor0fruit: "That's great, maybe if we keep supporting the Palestine Holocaust, everyone in the world will hate us" ##there are good reasons to criticise the Israeli government's treatment of palestinians, but they equating it to holocaust is inaccurate and unfair. Gross exaggerations like this aren't going to win anyone over. Let's stick to criticizing Israel for what it is actually doing.
ButterBuddha: "Sondra Oster Baras: "Israel has many enemies. We have to take advantage of every single one of our friends." take advantage of...i.e. scam, con, rip off, cheat, rob, steal......." ##the speaker's meaning is clearly *not* scam, con, rip off, etc. Beyond this statement that's been clearly taken out of context, BB offers no specific criticism of Israel. - swrlyhrly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5FTA - "A recent poll found that 59 percent of American evangelicals believe Israel is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy."
Way to sidestep that little nugget of information CNN. From my best understanding the last step of that "biblical prophecy" is that the Jew's need to take back control of a piece of land the Muslim's currently have a Mosque on so that they can build a temple on top of it before the apocalypse is kicked off. They believe everything is in place except for the second coming and the subsequent death of all mankind. Look it up if you want, i promise it'll be quite interesting and you might just learn a few things about that certain sect of christianity. - Lister169, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Muslims and Christians and Jews, oh my!
- CatManDoIt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Many people agree. There is a great MIT project going on right now called "Just Jerusalem." Check it out here: http://www.justjerusalem.org/
- crazihouse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Maybe if the Israeli army STOP BOMBING CITIES they'll find some peace.
You can't really generalise an entire population because of the acts of a minority of people. Regardless, the last Hamas suicide bombing was in 2005, Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade in April 2006 and Islamic Jihad in January of this year. The number of Israeli victims is not even a fraction of the number of Palestinian victims.
It's alright though, ignorance is bliss, right? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7from tfa:
hate speech:
"If we give any part of that land to the Arabs, we are looking at terrorism," she told a church audience.
replace 'arabs' with 'jews' if you doubt her statement is hate speech. evil is evil.
Now such historic anti-Semitism has given way to an urgent support of Israel among some evangelicals, many of whom believe that when Jews live in all of the Holy Land -- what they call Greater Israel -- only then will Christ return and true believers be raptured up to heaven.
so the motives of both christians and orthodox jews are selfish and greedy, after all...what a shocker. - J4k3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have a better idea: throw yourself off a building and do the entire world a favor. Loser.
- there, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4There is this thing called freedom of expression which I do believe in quite strongly. Therefore I would never force someone to believe in atheism. nor not believe in their religion.
However Jewish and Christian groups in America have gotten away far too long with no criticism and I think its about time our own freedom of speech be excercised rather than always walking around eggshells with these loons. If we don't do this soon it seems probable that they will find reasons to try and round us up and kill us just like they did in the dark ages. - g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He (homerj14) made the comment about Israel-bashing. I agreed and brought up the issue that some comments went well past Israel-bashing and into anti-semitism territory. They are different things, but both are reasonable concerns and you will find examples of either one below.
- JeanNarH, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It's not beeing anti-semitic, and defending muslims isn't beeing a terrorist.
We know that for ur stupid retarded religion everything is black or white, as for any retarded religion, but reality isn't and diggers eithers.
Now to avoid the incredible insult of beeing called a racist or anti-semitic, everybody should stop complaining about the massacres Israel is doing "in the name of freedom and rightfullness" ? ***** that!
Everybody who build an army in the name of their god or peace is a ***** retard, any religion alike, any country alike, any race alike. - g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Huh? I only address the mindless Israel-bashing (professor0fruit & ButterBuddha) and anti-Semitic (EpicLulz and *possibly* 0megaMan) comments here because they are the only comments that are germane given the parent post of this particular thread. I find the anti-Christian and anti-Muslim comments to be equally narrow-minded and at other times and in other threads I have addressed this issue. I am not saying there are no valid complaints and I HAVE SOUGHT TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LEGITIMATE CRITICISM OF ISRAEL AND MINDLESS DOUCHEBAGGERY SEVERAL TIMES IN THIS THREAD (sorry about caps but some people have had a little difficulty picking up on this).
"Funny how you only care about the antisemitic remarks. What about the the christian ones and Muslim ones? Don't they count? A telling point about you."
Is it? Really? If it is so ***** telling, then tell me how come you've got me pegged so wrong. You're no Sherlock Holmes, that's for certain. Before you give me the lecture on 'ignoring my own extremists' you might want to find out a little about me (it's okay, you can ask). If you had, I'd have told you that: (1) I'm Canadian, (2) I was raised a Lutheran (CELC), (3) I have no family that are Jewish or Israeli, (4) I'm an agnostic now (curse those agnostic extremists!!!) but I continue to hold my former church in high regard, (5) I generally vote NDP (a fair bit to the left of most democrats), and (6) I am highly critical of Israeli government policy. If there are any Canadian formerly-Lutheran-but-now-agnostic NDP critical-of-the-Israeli-government extremists I'll eat my ***** hat. But since there aren't, how about you stop making assumptions and accusations and either craft reasonable responses to people's posts or just shut the ***** up. - flip, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13The United States give tens of billions every year to prop up Israel.
I say that we should pull the damn plug on their entire zionist racist party!!!
This woman who was born and raised here within the United States
But never thought of herself as an american citizen!
she always thought of herself as Jewish and Israeli first and foremost!
Now I ask you... Joe Lieberman is orthodox jew that has said many times
how he doesn't adhere to mans laws but follows a higher authority
Who and what is he loyal too?
The human race will be so much better off without religions
it's time for thinking people to start standing up and opposing these dangerous religious morons and their leaders. - nepawoods, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah - what's up with the Rastafarians and songs about Zion and Babylon?
- biaandgetit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This isn't a religious discussion, but yes. No jews = no Christianity.
- CatManDoIt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8A lot of this is covered at Wikipedia in the article on Christian Zionism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Zionism
- professor0fruit, on 10/10/2007, -24/+27That's great, maybe if we keep supporting the Palestine Holocaust, everyone in the world will hate us
- mikehosek, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6
Give the Palestinians their land back and stop rolling tanks and soldiers threw their towns and see if that helps. Everyone knows that your illegal settlements and 40 year occupation has done nothing but make the situation worse. How would you like it if someone took the home that you have the deed to and said that god promised it to them. That makes no sense and can not be proven.By the way, please do not label me an anti-Semite, for I am far from it. I have plenty of jewish friends and we have these discussions all the time without calling each other names. - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -14/+17the christian zionists are just plain scary. they want all of israel be under jewish control so the rapture will kill all the heathens. they don't care about israel's human rights violations or the suffering of displaced palestinians.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"holy ground is the bedrock of fascism"
- dinostabOMG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's not true that Israel doesn't support the settlements. They are expanding Maale Adumim and trying to use it to surround and annex East Jerusalem. They also have continued to develop settlements in the West Bank to use them as bargaining chips. They are making a peace agreement impossible, because if the Palestinians were to accept the settlements, it would turn their already decimated and split-in-half state into Swiss cheese.
- Plaztikman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It is fact that Israeli colonies are on Palestinian territory, not Israel. They are building on land that is privately owned by Palestinians. These are the colonies that get attacked with rockets almost daily.
