Eventually the Chinese government will be overthrown, it's just a matter of time. - chugatussin, on 01/22/2009, -5/+210me censor you long time
- michaelpinto, on 01/21/2009, -6/+144Censorship always takes so much extra work to do - and in the end what does it get you?
- sillykalcifer, on 01/22/2009, -2/+139I don't know about that, I was born in Shanghai and from anyone I know, no one, ABSOLUTELY nobody is willing to take a stand against the government. Everyone is too scared to stand up for whats right because they don't want to lose the little bit they have. If someone were to try it, they would sadly get no support from the other people.
- ABadPerson, on 01/22/2009, -3/+132Did what to what? ;)
- nickrollout, on 01/22/2009, -0/+90My mother-in-law teaches high school students in China and she says the exact same thing. No one in China is even willing to talk politics, let alone dissent, for fear of being reported to the authorities.
- IRAcarbombs, on 01/22/2009, -0/+84If China edited the speech can you imagine what North Korea did to it ???
- govsucks, on 01/21/2009, -10/+84WOW, collectivists restricting human liberty, thats new. /S
- TheWriteGuy, on 01/22/2009, -1/+69By censoring these particular parts of Obama's speech, the Chinese government made themselves look guilty, as if he was talking about them, when actually he was talking generally about governments that are, or become, oppressive. He could have been referring to Iceland, as well.
Advice to the Chinese government: You guys really ought to learn to chill. - KingGorilla, on 01/22/2009, -1/+67Who's Barack Obama?
- csxero, on 01/22/2009, -9/+71I don't like China.
I'm not at all racist, I think some aspects of China are beautiful, and goddammit I try to be understanding of everyone. But China just pisses me the f*ck off sometimes. - BassMasterP, on 01/22/2009, -1/+63i think you mean you don't like the chinese government
- saltydawkins, on 01/22/2009, -2/+63China's government pisses me off, as it does most Americans. But, collectively, we don't have the right to bitch about it when we're willing to take their money. And we certainly shouldn't sit here on our Chinese-made furniture, in our Chinese-made clothes, that we bought with our "economic stimulus" checks that were paid with money borrowed from China, all hopped up on our freedom of speech (that we take completely for granted) and try to tell the Chinese people how they should deal with their own government. Their government is ***** bad and omnipresent on a scale that Americans cannot really comprehend. Want to do something about it? Stop subsidizing them by buying their products and start speaking up about borrowing money from other countries.
- arlok789, on 01/22/2009, -1/+46Having been to china, I have experienced the effects of their suppression of free speech first hand. People literally have no idea. At the same time, when debating with chinese students over the matter, they were quick to bring up Taiwan and Tibet (American disrespect of China) while defending their government. The massive economic growth that the communist party (actually just semi benevolent dictators) have brought to the country (through free markets no less) gives them a free pass in the eyes of the people when it comes to the free speech issue.

- AlphAssassin, on 01/22/2009, -4/+43me censor you rong time.
- uminatsu, on 01/22/2009, -0/+38Don't worry about North Koreans... I bet 90% of them don't even know who Obama is.
- pedepy, on 01/22/2009, -12/+45its high time for the chinese people to wake the ***** up ........
- fluxion, on 01/22/2009, -1/+32these "modern-communist" countries like china and vietnam are actually doing pretty well. people (generally) only try to overthrow their governments when they are suffering to an abnormal degree.
i think there's a better chance that as these countries continue adopting capitalistic policies on economic matters, a more open system of government will gradually evolve. perhaps that will end with a less climactic overthrow of some sort, but i just dont see enough anger and hopelessness for millions of people to throw themselves into the meat-grinder just yet. - vandernderyid, on 01/22/2009, -3/+30KAOS?
- fluxion, on 01/22/2009, -0/+26the north korean version had kim jong il's face photoshopped onto obama's body
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -2/+28I've spent time in China and one thing I discovered very quickly is that the people there will not talk politics. They'll pay some compliment to communism or appear to be disinterested then politely but firmly change the subject.
All the while they have a deer-in-the-headlights look.
You can end up in prison for such talk over there. - revyn, on 01/22/2009, -0/+25The worst part about censorship is
- carbonfilament, on 01/22/2009, -5/+29You mean where Roberts screw up the oath.
- LonesomeFighter, on 01/22/2009, -5/+29Americans were scared when we did our revolution. sure the french helped some. and sure technology these days is different, but anything is possible. i doubt a country can be seen actually helping, but well funded rebels/terrorists can always do the trick.
- fabkebab, on 01/21/2009, -16/+38I like China and all, but this is pathetic - I am sure when Obama sent his message out to other nations, he didnt think that one of the most important ones would be doctoring his words
- rsHoratio, on 01/22/2009, -7/+29Why is this surprising to people? China is a communist country and is already WELL known for media censorship.
- shadydentist, on 01/22/2009, -1/+23China hasn't been a true communist country in a long time, but the party still clings to power like a drowning man to a sinking ship.
- xDynaBlade, on 01/22/2009, -0/+21Make sure you direct your dissenting point of view towards the correct group of people: the Chinese government, not the entire people of China.
- rz8472, on 01/22/2009, -0/+21Also much of the urban population and young college students that were part of the 1989 demonstrations now only care about making money. If there is any sea-change in Chinese politics, it's probably going to come from the migrant workers and poor farmers.
- DuneChild, on 01/22/2009, -0/+20“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”

"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows." -Nineteen Eighty-Four - csxero, on 01/22/2009, -4/+22Yeah it's not directed towards the people of China, just China.
I always get ***** toys from china, china is communist, china treats dogs like *****, the way china treats some of its Olympic athletes, I could go on all day. I have very little positive association with China, so f*ck it.
No offense, Chinese people. I love Chinese people. - iDiggYa, on 01/22/2009, -0/+17wooooosh
- Khiva, on 01/22/2009, -1/+17Brain ......brain melting......
- chourobin, on 01/22/2009, -0/+16those people that make up those old rules will die out and policy will change. people will demand more from their government and policies will change etc.
- Jaime2000, on 01/22/2009, -0/+15Wasn't that hooker Vietnamese, though?
- kinggimped, on 01/22/2009, -14/+29"They are only sheeple because of the very low gun ownership."
Yes. This is precisely the ONLY reason. Moron.
I suppose six millennia of imbued culture and lack of individualism in their way of life has absolutely no bearing on anything. But then again, I don't suppose an American could possibly understand the concept of a country older than a couple of hundred years that didn't gain its position as a world superpower purely via the mass exploitation of black people.
Yeah, those Chinese are a bunch of wankers, what with their flourishing economy, gigantic population and ever-increasing power. Is the low gun ownership rate responsible for these atrocities, too?
Rather a country of 'sheeple' than a country of people permanently blowing each others' faces off using weaponry that goes way beyond self-defence, or the age-old cop-out of 'exercising your rights'. America is obsessed with guns and struggles horribly to control how they are used. It celebrates and glamorises the concept of owning guns whilst simultaneously suffering from all the idiots, criminals and just plain ol' rednecks using them irresponsibly, simply because holding the power of life and death in their hands makes them feel big.
China invented gunpowder, by the way. They're still waiting for your thank-you card.
Oh, and don't end sentences with a preposition. Moron. - Mujokan, on 01/22/2009, -1/+16They censored a couple of things from what I read. (1) Obama talking about America winning the Cold War (the "against communism" bit) and (2) Obama criticizing the tactics of dictators.
Chinese people don't think Obama is in favor of Marxist Leninist Communism. They aren't morons. There is not a great deal of straight communism in China anyway. The government just reflexively censors stuff that could be considered critical of the current regime, which happens to be called the Communist Party. But really it is more like a common-or-garden mid-level dictatorship with a mixed market-command economy.
They've abandoned "communism" per se. No-one with half a brain thinks Obama is in favor of communism, no matter what gets censored. - StormTroopr, on 01/22/2009, -1/+15I'm pro gun as they come but you are a moron republicker.
- HydroSkim99, on 01/22/2009, -9/+23China needs a revolution asap
- masamunecyrus, on 01/22/2009, -1/+14They have woken up...the ones that have been lucky enough to have been able to get around the bombarding of propaganda from the moment of their birth. That said, you try doing something against an authoritarian state whose ruling party is over 78 million members strong.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/22/2009, -1/+14Obama is very popular in China. Books about him sell well there. Now the Chinese government can continue to used a filtered version of Obama in their agenda without him seeming against communism, etc.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -14/+27A sheeple population of 1.3 trillion.
- seibed, on 01/22/2009, -0/+12Oh crap, now they're going to ban digg too. </chinese expat>
- omegared, on 01/22/2009, -4/+16the only difference is that in the USA the media is owned by the corporations that control the government and most of the wealth, so they can censor themselves.
- duckyinc, on 01/22/2009, -0/+12The sun is going to burn out... it's just a matter of time.
