- LeoRNR, on 07/30/2008, -2/+118"In bidding for games, Chinese officials said media would have complete freedom"
Lies, as usual! - vsujohn2, on 07/30/2008, -2/+107How did they get the bid in the first place? Rampant polution, human rights violations, massive censorship of media and internet, authoritative and harsh government.... it just doesnt make any sense.... other than $$$$
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -3/+55Internet censored AND monitored.....Wow so what's the point of having the internet over there?
- billsprestonIU, on 07/30/2008, -6/+57Nice work China.
- h0us3dj, on 07/31/2008, -2/+53*** ***** ******* ******** ** **** ********* -Edited by Chinese authorities
- alecsputnik, on 07/31/2008, -9/+54guess what, people in china won't see this.
- MikeyMoose, on 01/30/2009, -7/+50***** them - can't be trusted.
- jonmlm, on 07/31/2008, -0/+34why wouldn't they censor it? it's china. ITS CHINA. the committee knew what it was like when they chose beijing
- ozymandias2012, on 07/31/2008, -2/+34The 2008 Olympics are a joke. The world has basically rewarded a government that openly denies it's people free access to information. State endorsed ignorance.....pathetic. We shouldn't even be trading pleasantries with this country until they lift these ridiculous Orwellian restraints on information.
- cardyology, on 07/31/2008, -3/+34***** censorship. The internet is one of the few remaining places where freedom of speech still exists.
- vipertech, on 07/31/2008, -1/+29Dear Journalists,
Use a f-ing encrypted VPN to tunnel through your companys servers. Kthx bai. - protogenxl, on 07/31/2008, -0/+22"certain parts of the Great Firewall would have to remain on in order to protect the youth from "unhealthy" websites."
Yet these kids can get to 4chan.org - rajinder, on 07/31/2008, -2/+21Anyone suprised? This IS China we're talking about here.
- CommanderEFG, on 07/31/2008, -0/+18But people there get arrested for even thinking about protesting and any major protests that do happen get swept under the rug so quick you would have no idea it even happen.
Tiananmen Square is a perfect example. There is a foreign exchange student from China who I meet last year. A few of my friends and I asked her a bunch of questions about China and asked her about the events Tiananmen Square in 89 and she looked at us with a puzzled looked. She said, "I don't see what the big deal is. I heard about something happening their when I was a baby and the only way I know even that is from my big sister." I replied with, "So neither your parents or your teachers told you won't happened there?" Which she said, "No why would they? The government teaches us only whats important to know."
Truly scary stuff. - ThenWang, on 07/31/2008, -3/+19helloooooooo
- basye, on 07/31/2008, -1/+16Their definition of 'freedom' is completely different from the rest of the world.
- theutopian, on 07/31/2008, -0/+14Surprise Surprise. The best thing to happen to China is the entire Western world coming to it and experiencing it's oppression firsthand.
- ShisouKen, on 07/30/2008, -15/+29We should liberate them the way we did Iraq! Right? Right?
There is NOTHING you can do about this. China is a sovereign nation armed with the biggest of kaboom bombs (nukes) so unless our plan is to keep yelling at them and hope that it does'nt effect our trade or the money we owe them, it would be wise to for Peter Rabbit to stay out of Mr. McGregors Garden... - orangefly, on 07/31/2008, -2/+16i would like to see a boycott....
- owenkun, on 07/31/2008, -2/+15Communists being dishonest, who could have possibly guessed.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+13China pretended to promise to address these issues. The IOC pretended to believe them. Now they are pretending to be shocked that China is not keeping its word.
- Spudster, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11Not giving them positive attention from their olympics fiasco could be a start.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+10Worst part is that's actually true.
- johnnybates, on 07/31/2008, -1/+11Only a fool would truly believe this mess could have unfolded any differently than it has. As the days go by, I think more and more that ultimately, the real intention behind giving the Olympics to China was to drag their reputation further out into the spotlight and make them look bad in front of the world.
- kevman459, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9Google "Tiananmen Square" if you want to see censorship, I got 1.8 million hits.
- Hetman, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10What? I swear people act like these games are taking place in China or something.
- shlylpf, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10dude.you got me.From Shanghai.
Censoring doesn't means I can't digging here! - Waiting2awake, on 07/31/2008, -0/+9And to think it was between them and Toronto, Ontario........
How did Toronto lose to these guys? Ohh yeah, bribery and assurances that they have not lived up to.... - flossdaily, on 07/31/2008, -6/+14I'm boycotting the Olympics this year. Actually, I boycott the Olympics every time.
Because they are insanely, insanely boring. - HouseofEl, on 07/31/2008, -1/+9Does anyone else get the felling that this is going to fail miserably for China? I can't imagine this working. They can censor their own people and companies, but something tells me stuff will leak out. Whenever you try and control this stuff, the more things don't go your way. Do they also not realize that these journalists will leave after the games are over? I'm sure there will be some great stories.
- CaptainCool53, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8Do you pay attention to current events at all? What's the approval rating of the Iraq war? What is the number one issue in the upcoming Presidential election? We are asking our government to leave Iraq alone.
It's pretty easy to find hypocrisy when you group 300 million people under one preconceived stereotype. - Gravix, on 07/31/2008, -1/+8Simple: To leave horrid tracks on the internet logs.
Some poor ignorant fool browsing the logs finds a few hundred searches for things like "goatse" and "tubgirl" and the like and decides to check them out.
Instant lulz! - beesaretasty, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7But if we give them the Olympic Games, surely they'll clean up their act, right?
- theutopian, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7The problem though is that the internet in China is already achingly slow because everything is filtered through the 'great firewall.'
- angryfirelord, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6Hey, we have to pay them back somehow. All of those dollars are worthless.
- Relikh, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7$$$$ is all the sense you will ever get in this world.
- bababoosh, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6"guess what, people in china won't see this."
This is the problem, we want so badly to "help the poor Chinese" but we don't even know what the hell you are talking about. Before aligning yourself with a cause you should really understand it first. No wonder people think we are so arrogant. - gamerscalling, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6What if a company setup a secure proxy that would allow their reporters to connect to a computer in their home country and access websites through that. A little slower but they would have access to everything.
- Spudster, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6I'm Canadian and comment on Digg about American politics all the time. Americans are free to comment on Canadian politics aswell. Just because you don't live in a certain country, doesn't mean you aren't allowed to comment on the state of their political affairs.
- foxhound009, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6It will be the ***** Olympics ever.
- nickcommie, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Yes, because we all know that countries with capitalist economic systems, and their governments, tell the truth. All the time.
- jonmlm, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5same point as having it here at my job? there's still plenty to see. *****, if i had to choose no internet or internet circa 94 i'd still take browsing sites on lynx back in 94
- Numbski, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4For those that really want out, they can vpn, ssh - pfft, there are TONS of ways around this. They aren't going to go arresting journalists. It's going to be the natives that get screwed by it. When it comes right down to it, they didn't want to lift the firewall for the natives, not even for 2 weeks.
It's a sad state of affairs, but it isn't as though the journalists are really stuck here. :( - mutz, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4it will rot from the inside
- ippey, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4The only thing that I got from this rant was that Bush's middle name is Walker. I honestly never knew that.
/prepares for being dugg down - rexCo, on 07/31/2008, -2/+6I still can't believe they choose China over Toronto
- Noein, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Hey I love this game, can I have a C please?
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3**** China!
