Of course they'll just see those 30 mil unmarried men as candidates for the Chinese red army and send them into Taiwan for a Viking Style "pillage the women and kill the men" party.

its because all the black guys stole all the white girls, its a vicious circle, the only one no one wants to date is the black girls. - bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -8/+53plus all the white guys steal their chicks.. seems like 90% of asian girls around Boston have white boyfriends

- ArmchairAthlete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20And their government blocks pornography. I feel sorry for these guys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19They can take mine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Not really. I've seen magazine articles about where shortages like this already exist. Women are reduced from human beings down to a high ticket contraband item like drugs......to be kidnapped, enslaved, fought over between organized criminals etc.
- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16No... but I am investing all my money in a Chinese lotion and kleenex shop.
- rodtrent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Ah, they'll just make up their own name for it, like the French did for 3-somes. Probably something like "muy guy" or something.

Why doesnt anyone want the black chick? Im serious, i really don't know. - W00DR0W, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15India's facing the same problem for the same reasons.
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yea, I must agree. Its amazing what happens when pulic policy causes chinese families to abort or kill any daughters they have in favor of boys.
- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11plenty of sexy water buffalos all over the countryside though.

- raybury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@JamesWilson
There actually is a culture in that part of the world that does the "seven brides for seven brothers" thing all too seriously. Land is handed down through the male line; the oldest brother takes a wife and brings her onto the family estate. As each brother comes of age, he marries the same wife. Children of one brother are children of all, and the next generation of brothers repeats the process on the same land. God I hated anthropology class. - mildsoup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yeah, "definitely".

- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11They could share the women.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There has been numerous studies that have linked male:female ratios to war.
It has been discovered that historically whenever there is a larger proportion of males to females, that nations tend towards war to "correct" the imbalance. More males means fiercer competition for women. If there are no women in your home country you will likely look elsewhere. Also, that leaves a surplus of males that are suitable for military service. Unfortunately, I'm not able to cite any sources. I read this awhile ago (in the Atlantic Monthly, I believe) and do not remember my exact source.
Rest assured however, that China will absolutely have to correct this imbalance. Either some legislative act that protects female births will have to occur, or they'll have to somehow "lose" large portions of their male population. If they take the former course, it will only occur gradually over generations and therefore there is still a shortfall for the current generation. More than likely, these excess males will find themselves in the military and probably dying in a future conflict; likely in Taiwan.
Other problems will occur however. Prostitution, kidnapping of brides, and violence against women will undoubtedly spike. There are already problems of shortages of women for men to marry. Chinese women will be in extreme danger in the future and the government must act to protect them.
China's ambivalence towards female infanticide has to change if China expects to remain viable in the future. Luckily for China, these sort of things tend to "naturally" work out in an economic sense. But it won't be pretty and it will take time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12The funny part is, I have no idea who you're talking about.
- RoflcopterFUEL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7they can take my wife.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+630 million people is about the population of Canada.
Imagine an entire Canada full of males and there are no females for them to marry. That is the situation that China flirting with. How do you appease that many people? Sure, China's population is incredibly huge. But 30 million people is enough to cause social mayhem. What if those sexually frustrated, bellicose, (just) 30 million Chinese men decide they want to take down the Chinese government? That is plenty enough to cause huge disruptions even in a country the size of China. - Zanwar000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm hope you meant Indians or Hindus instead of Chinese.
- ck01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, it kind of does work that way. Look at other countries that have gone through the same problem. Look at life in prison. Another example is India, with a very large gay population.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What this means: Women get some element of control because they can pick the husbands they want.

why did you have to tell us that???... - qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6you better kick your older brother's ass if he picks an ugly one.
- Jelfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6China has problems, but don't make the mistake of believing that the 1.3 billion people are homogeneous in all aspects of life. That would be like saying all the US are extreme right-wing evangelical Christians. It's true, in the rural areas (which, admittedly is most of China), tradition prevails. This means that gender roles, and thus gender discrimination, are still quite present. But in larger cities like Beijing, Shang Hai, Guang Zhou, and Hong Kong, women go to university, work for themselves, and have relationships and marry for love, just like in a typical western culture. That's not to say that they can compare with, say the US, but traditions and mindsets take time to change. And although working conditions for factory workers in the city are *****, it's still far better than living by subsistence farming, especially for women. They are able to make their own spending cash and send it back to their farming families who rely on it to survive during bad growing seasons. And if they're really lucky, they might be able to send one of their children to university someday, *maybe*.
Also, it should be pointed out that the one child rule is not universal in all of china. In fact, in many areas, they only restrict the number of boys that you can have. This is partly because it is the men who usually make the attempt to work in big cities. All the women stay back at home and care for the children, and subsequently the crops. The problem with there being too many men is a problem that's most noticed in cities.
And things are indeed changing. There are wide spread, almost propaganda-like messages encouraging young girls, telling them that they can be just as good if not better than men. Successful women are starting to emerge, and thus role models are made. Change is really happening.
And yes, there are problems. From this side of the globe, China may seem hopelessly lacking in social welfare, but believe me, there are a *lot* of angry people in China, especially the younger college aged people; angry about corruption of their government and the general restrictions placed upon them to succeed and compete. And with this new age of instant communication and information, coupled with China's increasing presence in the world market, it's absolutely inevitable that when those angry people get older and become more powerful, big noticeable changes are going to occur. - carcrazy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Absolutely right. I think I read somewhere that in the past ten years, 10 million female children were aborted (I think those were the figures), and that is projected to increase to 20 million girls unborn in another ten years. Ridiculously horrible.
Not only will there be an increase in homosexuality, depopulation has already begun in both regions. - Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Have them fight to the death.... id watch that besides the olymics
- SamsLembas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With a bit of luck the males will join rebellions, not the People's Army.
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know, "experts" keep on saying this but at this moment there are 6 brothels containing no less than 5 prostitutes each within 3 minutes walk from the ground floor of my appartment building in Shanghai (can only see 3 of them from my window).
#2 30 million shortage? That's a drop in the bucket for China. Plenty of Westerners don't get married for reasons other than no having enough women. I seriously doubt any real unrest from this.
#3 I teach English here in Shanghai, China to 1st and 2nd graders within their own public schools and you know what? There are more girls in every class than boys. It's really only in-the-middle-of-no-where areas that abort/kill little girls. Again, it's more rare than people would have you believe.
The whole thing is over-hyped. - Gohan5052, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Chinese girls are ***** hot i gata nab one soon.
- Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow. 30 million pissed off, frustrated men.
I feel a massacre comin' on. - koushi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The thing is that in this case, it is hardly the woman's choice. Since you already know that women are valued lower in society (thus begging the question), obviously her husband or relatives of elder/higher standing could easily coerce her into aborting the fetus in some way or another. Also the main problem lies not in this; most in the Western world would probably imagine them emotionlessly destroying their own offspring, but usually female infanticide occurs in rural areas, where one family owns a plot of land (after the land distribution under Deng Xiaoping where the People's Communes were disbanded) and is tortured by the fact that they will need someone to work on the farm, and a man would be more helpful to them and is responsible for them when grown. Women are to marry out of the family and become "children" of their in-laws and therefore void their responsibility to their parents, even though many still try their best to help.
So we have an impoverished rural couple, usually with little to no access to plumbing, hospitals, etc, who depend on their farm for their livelihood and know that they will be very vulnerable at an old age. Of course they turn to a boy, and it is not really a choice when you can only have one child. So it's not that they despise females and love abortions, the Chinese people has traditionally been forced into tight corners by their highly authoritarian government's policies. - YLhandLZ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Makes me feel a little guilty about all of those Asian mail order brides that I'm stockpiling.....

There's one such study. I'll post more as I find them. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Population control, Darwinism, take your pick. Maybe now they will realise that it is not always a good idea to kill off all the girls.
