- FarEastKilla, on 05/12/2009, -0/+14no, "This is not a birthday worth celebrating" but it's a memorial day to be mourned.
- ZeeZee2k, on 05/12/2009, -0/+8That's Chinatown, not China.
- colosis, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4may all of those who died rest in peace
- davebushe, on 05/13/2009, -1/+5I was travelling in China at the time. I was lucky, I was about 24 hours away from being in Sichuan province. I felt a small shake in Beijing but in the pub we laughed it off as minor... you can imagine how we'd soon feel about that. Then I was on an overnight train and didn't realise until the next day when I got off to see streams of refugees (already receiving significant help from the military). I don't speak or read Mandarin but I didn't need to in order to understand the newspaper headlines.
I know that there are lots of things that we in the West don't like about China and it's policies. I know that I don't like everything I read about China though in fairness I can say that about many countries in the world. I cannot however fault the response that China had to this disaster. Day in and day out for several weeks afterward I saw the government and the people working together as one to help the trapped, the injured and the survivors. My thoughts didn't stray far from that for quite some time and now again they are with the people who were affected by this.
Over seventy thousand people died and over half a million people were injured. I don't have a number for how many people lost a loved one and/or a home. I'd really like it if we could put our political points down for at least the anniversary of this tragedy. - aizayke, on 05/12/2009, -0/+4Rest in peace.
- sanskrtam, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3This was the very same attitude from the South Korea's Sampoong department store rescue operation. And this was the same attitude from the huge earthquakes happened in Taiwan and Turkey years ago.
And we don't complain about those countries' human rights, do we? Sorry if I already misunderstood your comment.
Anyways, the aftermath from this Sichuan earthquake was very difficult to manage because of very inconvenient terrain worse than Turkey's and the very bad series of weather that made it worse for the rescue operations. - sayoshinn, on 05/12/2009, -1/+4Oh I didn't know we were saying completely unrelated isms. My turn!
Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
But I guess I shouldn't have too high of hopes for your comments though. You also said 'recycling is for squares' in the article about San Fransisco. and in all caps yelled about how we should carpet bomb countries to weed our terrorists. Your a special kind of person aren't you? - compeggirl, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Wow, and I remember the time it had occurred. sragland: ...

Enjoy! - staystilljason, on 05/13/2009, -0/+2You're not funny.
- Zcrubby, on 05/12/2009, -0/+1They're supposed to be real, but don't really have any source, although I remember seeing a youtube clip about the guy in "I Must Be Strong", a reporter started crying when asking for forgiveness after disregarding Chen's greeting to his wife/girlfriend (don't really remember)
- Dustin00, on 05/12/2009, -3/+4... by burrying complaints from parents about shoddy school construction, lying about how many actually died, and terrorizing the survivers who ask any questions.
- applepump, on 05/13/2009, -0/+0no, not make, marks as anniversary. We won't foregt that day for ever.
- JCEEZ, on 05/12/2009, -2/+1I remember reading this article that they had to stop letting in international aid, because they "volunteers" were using up more supplies then the people they were trying to save.
- UberNick, on 05/12/2009, -6/+4Actually, most of the population is celebrating the manufactured triumph of the great government saviors versus the natural disaster. In one town where the only building destroyed was a very-shoddily constructed school (killing hundreds of children), the Chinese have actually instituted a special police force to ban public mourning of their children and suppress both press inquiries and reporting on it. - SwampAss, on 05/12/2009, -7/+4I remember there was one lady telling the TV crews how awesome her country was and that they were going to save her family that is trapped in the rubble.
Well the next scene is her Crying and screaming that the government will not attempt to rescue anyone else in that town. 90k gone. - rjshatz, on 05/12/2009, -6/+2I read this as "China MAKES Earthquake."
I was wondering if they were allowed to do that. - dinglebutt, on 05/12/2009, -5/+0512 LIGHT CANDLES EVERYDAY

- sayoshinn, on 05/12/2009, -11/+2I don't think Hallmark makes any 'Sorry your country got destroyed by a gigantic earthquake and 90,000 people died or went missing' cards.
Guess I'll have to grab a card in the 'get well soon' section - hawk0168, on 05/12/2009, -15/+3Isn't China obligated to celebrate anniversaries by using dragons and fireworks? What gives?
