- khail250, on 05/13/2008, -1/+37I just hope there are no more hate comments on here :( I just got back from a business trip in China last night. People, put the politics aside, its not the people it is the gov't just like the way it is here. My deepest sympathies go out to some of the nicest people I have met.
- retzed, on 05/13/2008, -1/+29Why would you feel any less sorry for these people because of their government? If 30 000 Americans die in a disaster I'm not going to judge the worth of their lives by the lack of humanity shown by George Bush.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -3/+25you guys are ***** up, i hope this never sees the light of day
- TheWalkingDude, on 05/13/2008, -1/+22AP is reporting a death toll of nearly 9,000 (no meme intended):
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080512/ap_on_re_as/ch ... - sundancekid503, on 05/13/2008, -8/+27Both these comments are insensitive, I'm just going to collapse this thread.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+16Agreed.
- mywhitenoise, on 05/13/2008, -10/+27That was uncalled for, i'm going to BURY your comment.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+16The death toll now for the earthquake is over 7,000 in the Sichuan province ALONE.
- Heidenreich12, on 05/13/2008, -0/+13This is very sad. It seems its earthquake season, I am in St. Louis and I got ot feel the 5 something quake here, and I couldn't even imagine what it would be like to have a 7.8.... thats just tragic.
- WriterSD, on 05/13/2008, -4/+19Horrible :(
- retzed, on 05/13/2008, -3/+14Good idea. Lets bury tradgedies so that we can live in ignorance of the world's problems. Personally I prefer Lolcats.
- Jambi, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9This piece of news has actually been on the front page twice today, and got into the top ten hottest articles once.
http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=china+earthqu ... - SpeakMediaBlog, on 05/13/2008, -2/+12This is so horrendous. My heart goes out to everyone in China and in Burma as they are still suffering and dying from the cyclone. It's just so awful - there are no words. And, I completely agree with Khail250 - now is not the time for politics or soundbites. Help is all that is required.
- livegreenordie, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11I suppose that some of the supplies not getting into Myanmar will be diverted. The whole continent is going to need a lot of help!
- aukxsona, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8Holy ***** indeed. I was tearing up when they talked about the names of dead on a chalk board. I could totally see that. My heart is breaking in two.
- notoneofus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6We've had 10 so far this month in Japan. I'm from L.A. so I'm used to quakes, but two this week were over 6.7. One that lasted 25 seconds was pretty scary. The 7.8 in China went on as long as *two minutes*. Magnitude plus length. I can hardly imagine.
- jmpeagle, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7you must be new here
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8Had the same thing happened in an urban area in America, there would not nearly be the same outrage. Frankly, I think this flap is more of an expression of Sinophobia than actual concern for the Tibetans.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6I don't think China wants any comparisons to Myanmar at this point.
- wrathofg0d, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8wrong bitch
Monday's quake occurred when the Tibetan plateau collided with the Sichuan basin, Zhigang Peng, an earthquake expert at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, told CNN. - coolxin, on 05/13/2008, -0/+59000+ now
- googooly, on 05/13/2008, -5/+11Digg lovers : Tibet has nothing to do with this earthquake. Leave this subject of " FREE TIBET" alone, for now
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Didn't even think of that, but it's a very good point. I wonder if China is accepting foreign aid.
- Grumps, on 05/13/2008, -4/+10http://digg.com/world_news/900_students_buried_in_ ...
1370 duggs to date. - judolphin, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6The people in China suffer enough... here's to hoping they find some relief, and soon. Thoughts and prayers out to the families and the survivors.
- nedbigbyssg, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7And a thing about the Richter scale is that it's logarithmic. Going from 6.6 to 7.8 is well over 10 times the energy. And before someone bashes the quality of Chinese construction, a quake like this will devastate any modern city.
- STKD, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5According to the bbc, the death toll is at least ~10,000 at the latest estimate.
Sad day. - jmpeagle, on 05/13/2008, -3/+8you could have made a similar point without being so confrontational. Just point out that the Dalai Lama doesn't want independence and has never called for it and the fact that the Tibet riots seemed to be more like Race riots where all Han Chinese were brutally attacked by the local Tibetans...of course the Chinese government then sent in riot police and the army to ruthlessly cruch the protests including attacking mon ks who weren't part of the racial attacks against innocent Han Chinese.
- aukxsona, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6***** *****! Why didn't Bush do this in Katrina! Damn they are ***** quicker, smarter, and more ***** responsive. WTF! Thank heavens they are doing something to get to the worst affected areas. ***** ***** that has got to be a mother of a quake.
- Oppslagsverk, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Just have to point out that not all of the diggers are American=)
- notoneofus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5The two responses are incomparable. True China refused aid in '76, but the also covered up the extent of the quake. And they could hardly afford to take care of it themselves. This time, they let out the information immediately, and have not stopped reporting on the subject. They mobilized very quickly (can anyone say the same for the US in New Orleans?) and they will likely accept aid if needed.
Most of the shoddy construction in China is not due to poor engineering or ability, but due to greedy people building inferior housing to catch up with demand. It's money. It usually is.
@aukxsona: You're absolutely right. Japan has some of the best structural engineers in the world, but that didn't stop buildings in Kobe from crumbling. - macwac, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5He has all the right in the world to express his political opinion even if he is a 外国人 (foreigner). Though i think its distasteful of him to bring in a political opinion into a post dedicated to victims of an earthquake.. there is no correlation at that. My thoughts go out to the 10,000 people who have passed away and their families.
- notoneofus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4By "nothing" you mean about the earthquake? If so, you're right. If you truly mean "nothing" you should try craigslist, on and off Reuters, on and off BBC...the list goes on.
- Hangly, on 05/13/2008, -0/+410,000 as opposed to 250,000. 7.8 is a huge ***** earthquake. I doubt your town, wherever it is, could have taken it.
It's worth noting though that the newer buildings in downtown Chongqing are still standing.
Thanks for your informed opinion about what China's real problems are though. - LoJack, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5You're watching too much TV. Watch a better channel - PBS.
- OropheR, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4And that was one school. I've heard on the BBC world service this morning that there was an other collapsed school with even more students in it.
- aukxsona, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Oh please, some of the very best designers came up with "fool proof" earthquake protection and it bombed in the past. They did pretty ***** amazing actually.
- KageMushaSD, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Keep the damn politics out of this!
If you didn't know, in Sichuan live a huge amount of Tibets, more than in Tibet itself! So keep this out of the picture.
It's about the people, the normal people are affected. And it's indiscriminate. Han-, Hui-Chinese or Tibets, it does not matter. They all need help.
The Chinese government has sent out 50.000 soldiers to help with the rescue. But it's a difficult area to reach, the infrastructure is destroyed and the weather there is known to be harsh (mist and rain) so helicopters have a hard way to get there as well. But with the many typhoons every year in China they have emergency services on standby.
My heart goes out to all the affected people in China - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Even you don't speak out, we won't think you are dumb.
- PDAIsAOk, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4I dont know if this was on the frontpage yet but I havent seen it all day. CNN is saying over 10,000 dead, this is extremely sad for China. If I was religious I would pray for the families but since Im not you will be in my thoughts

- Hangly, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4This picture is making the rounds in China.

To all the caring people on digg: thank you!
To those thow in political comment: no time to argue with you, my thought and heart are with those fighting for their own or other people's lives, including our government and the millitary. Hope one day, maybe one day, you will see that China can actually be your friend, not your enemy. - zohaibusman, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4no no. i think god has a different ways of love and hate.
any ways. sad - mikeon, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2To the curious, the picture contains images of presumably, dead children and adults in water with a few fallen trees around/on top.
