- khail250, on 05/13/2008, -17/+16what you should really be mad at is Tibet itself. Tibet has no right to claim independance, and THEY are the ones that killed more, they are the ones that started riots, burned down buildings, and killed native Chinese. who are they to say they should be free? they have been part of china for 700 years, why not give back the land to the Navajos? but if you still wish to hate then hate the gov't the Chinese in China are some of the friendliest people i met out of 27 countries i have visited. think of our own govt do you hate americans or bush??
- jmpeagle, on 05/13/2008, -3/+8you could have made a similar point without being so confrontational. Just point out that the Dalai Lama doesn't want independence and has never called for it and the fact that the Tibet riots seemed to be more like Race riots where all Han Chinese were brutally attacked by the local Tibetans...of course the Chinese government then sent in riot police and the army to ruthlessly cruch the protests including attacking mon ks who weren't part of the racial attacks against innocent Han Chinese.
- Berkana, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1The violence allegedly carried out by the Tibetan monks was staged by the Chinese army.

- yellowsnowcone, on 05/13/2008, -7/+10The sad thing is, China should have learned from its past mistakes. This tragedy should never have happened.
In 1976, the Tangshan quake killed nearly 250,000 people. China refused foreign aid and tried to prevent news from reaching other parts of China, and censored reports on the 30-year anniversary of the quake in 2006.
Now, more than three decades later, people are still dying in quakes due to shoddy construction, engineering, etc.
Censorship breeds ignorance breeds incompetence.- aukxsona, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Oh please, some of the very best designers came up with "fool proof" earthquake protection and it bombed in the past. They did pretty ***** amazing actually.
- Hangly, on 05/13/2008, -0/+410,000 as opposed to 250,000. 7.8 is a huge ***** earthquake. I doubt your town, wherever it is, could have taken it.
It's worth noting though that the newer buildings in downtown Chongqing are still standing.
Thanks for your informed opinion about what China's real problems are though. - notoneofus, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5The two responses are incomparable. True China refused aid in '76, but the also covered up the extent of the quake. And they could hardly afford to take care of it themselves. This time, they let out the information immediately, and have not stopped reporting on the subject. They mobilized very quickly (can anyone say the same for the US in New Orleans?) and they will likely accept aid if needed.
Most of the shoddy construction in China is not due to poor engineering or ability, but due to greedy people building inferior housing to catch up with demand. It's money. It usually is.
@aukxsona: You're absolutely right. Japan has some of the best structural engineers in the world, but that didn't stop buildings in Kobe from crumbling.- Hangly, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1With regard to aid, Carrefour donated 2 million RMB to the relief effort, and Tencent (QQ) donated one million.

- wjwh326, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1This has nothing to do with censorship. There are human loss and property damage whenever and wherever a huge earthquake happen like this one. And do you know how many people living in Sichuan, the province where the quake occured? It's a province as big as, say, Missouri, and has a population of over 100 million. Whatever disaster happens, there will be a lot of people die or being injured.
Gosh I just feel like crying... - yellowsnowcone, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1My point was that China appears to have learned little from the Tangshan quake when 10,000 of its people die in a 7.8 temblor. And most people in China today don't even know about the Tangshan quake.

If you didn't know, in Sichuan live a huge amount of Tibets, more than in Tibet itself! So keep this out of the picture.
It's about the people, the normal people are affected. And it's indiscriminate. Han-, Hui-Chinese or Tibets, it does not matter. They all need help.
The Chinese government has sent out 50.000 soldiers to help with the rescue. But it's a difficult area to reach, the infrastructure is destroyed and the weather there is known to be harsh (mist and rain) so helicopters have a hard way to get there as well. But with the many typhoons every year in China they have emergency services on standby.
