It will be fun to watch, companies are already making their exit plans. - MadEnvoy, on 04/23/2008, -6/+172In the past when a country needed more resources, they went to war.
- JohnnyHu, on 04/23/2008, -5/+165Did anyone actually bother to read the article? It says China only has 12 days of coal in RESERVE. It does NOT mean China will run out of coal in 12 days.
I am for one is glad to see that China is investing heavily in alternative energy. - Thrilltone, on 04/23/2008, -8/+146The U.S. has enough coal to last us 400 years.
Since Chinese trade vessels are returning to China almost empty, why aren't we selling them our coal? - Captbob007, on 04/23/2008, -7/+143Better yet why aren't we screwing them over for it and charging a 500% markup like the petroleum companies do to us?
- robEstyles, on 04/23/2008, -4/+129They should start using Tiberium
- n8o8, on 04/23/2008, -5/+117While I feel horrible for the Chinese people, it is these kinds of events that could force the government to reexamine their policies and priorities.
- Jashobeam5, on 04/23/2008, -8/+94Hopefully the food, medicine, suppliment and toy companies will be first to leave China. It's one thing to buy a cheap gardening set from China; it's another to depend on them to make your heart medication and infant teething rings.
- marksism, on 04/23/2008, -1/+86I am in the international shipping business, and let me tell you those ships are FAR from empty when going back to China. The United States still exports a great deal of products worldwide and the steamship lines that serve China bring our goods all around the world.
Coal is also a very difficult commodity to ship in traditional containerized freight. Selling them our coal is not necessarily going to be profitable when shipping it anyways. I'm being pedantic, I know, but just letting you know that actually exporting out of the US is an EXTREMELY tight market and it's not as easy as loading up empty vessels. - jockser, on 04/23/2008, -4/+75This is how wars start...
- thelock65, on 04/23/2008, -8/+78wont them running out of coal kinda ***** over the rest of the world too?
- NinjaBoy, on 04/23/2008, -1/+62I just bought a toaster for $6
- ryllharu, on 04/23/2008, -2/+60This story is just asking for it:
"Hello, China? I have something you may want. But it's gonna cost ya. That's right. All the tea."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal#World_coal_reser ... - Elamen, on 04/23/2008, -5/+60OM NOM NOM NOM?
- rpapi100, on 04/23/2008, -2/+55It's one thing to oppose Chinese policy and government, it's another to wish ill to 1 billion human beings no less. Considering we (western countries in general) have not solved our own energy problems and are not even close to finding a viable large-scale solution for the impeding energy crisis I think you should re-think your previous comment. It's not because China has the upper hand in terms of trade with most of the world right now that somehow by going under the American economy will be all better...
- BadseedJR, on 04/23/2008, -6/+58I hope they don't try to collect on that 5 trillion dollars we owe them so they can buy more energy sources...
- Frnnkdlxx, on 04/23/2008, -9/+60WW3 in 12 days everyone. Final Notice
- Monk22, on 04/23/2008, -1/+52luckily the US is the like the middle east of coal. we have more coal than we know what to do with. sucks for china.
- aki009, on 04/23/2008, -0/+49...because we'll need that coal. Besides, the Chinese have plenty of coal, too, but their inefficient methods of extracting it seem to be not up to their growing demand.
- Shananra, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4412 days reserve, the title is a bit misleading. The fact that the reserve shrunk by an entire days' worth of coal in one month suggests that they are using more than they are producing, which is why they are concerned about it.
- inactive, on 04/23/2008, -0/+44You mean the "method" of having 4000 dudes grab shovels and go to town?
- Evolutuon, on 04/23/2008, -24/+59***** em, I honestly think that country needs to go back to the stone age. The amount of damage done to the environment and its lack of respect for human rights is unforgivable. Get your own coal.
- fizzak, on 04/23/2008, -2/+33Is it naive of me to ask why they don't just build nuclear power plants?
- bizkit00, on 04/23/2008, -2/+32turns out the companies make 9% of the cost while the govt take 20%; should say "like the government does to us"
- elnerdo, on 04/23/2008, -1/+3112 VERY LONG days. You'll note that it took 30 days for there to be 3 less days of coal left. They have at least 1/3 of a year left on their current reserve of coal, and eventually they'll start with some restrictions so it won't be so bad. Also, China's in the process of creating a LARGE NUMBER of nuclear reactors. They won't run out of energy.
- pahoehoe, on 04/23/2008, -0/+29I think the article is referring to the reserve of coal, that is, coal that is ready to go into the plant and be burned. It is not referring to the coal that is in the ground in China. That is, if mining operations were to stop in China, they'd have 12 days of full power production left. It's like saying the U.S. has a 30 day reserve of oil. Doesn't mean we're going to run out in 30 days.
- twigboy, on 04/23/2008, -1/+29i tend to get alot of coal at christmas.
- Logicexe, on 04/23/2008, -1/+29Whoah, that's some misleading title. China is not down to 12 days worth of coal. Their reserves are down to 12 days worth of coal. That means that any significant supply interruption longer than a few days can result in most of the country running out of coal.
They are not running out of coal. Well, they are since coal is finite, but it's not going to happen in 12 days. - arrrapirate, on 04/24/2008, -0/+27you require more vespane gas
- shogun042, on 04/23/2008, -1/+28oh good maybe now the air will be clean in time for the olympics
- regeya, on 04/23/2008, -1/+26No country has ever sustained a growth rate that high, and from all reports corruption, especially in banking, is rampant. Their crash will be as spectacular as their meteoric rise. Hopefully they won't set the world afire as their last act of defiance.
- djSyndrome, on 04/23/2008, -2/+26Please die, preferably in a fire.
- Pfkninenines, on 04/23/2008, -2/+26America's got coal. America's got a debt. China has money...Anyone see where I'm going?
- mCanada, on 04/23/2008, -0/+23what's the point? Once you've got a good supply some jerk who invested heavily in arms production early on takes out your array of harvesters.
- Ihatenicks, on 04/23/2008, -5/+26Bang on!
There has never, in the history of man, been a communist or socialist society, they've all been bastardised verisons of dictatorships, every one of them. - InetRoadkill, on 04/23/2008, -2/+23So does this mean they'll run out in 12 days, or that they only have 12 days reserve on hand?
- Beanbones, on 04/23/2008, -3/+24War. War never changes. The Romans waged war to gather slaves and wealth. Spain built an empire from its lust for gold and territory. Hitler shaped a battered Germany into an economic superpower. But war never changes... In the 21st century, war was still waged over the resources that could be acquired - only this time, the spoils of war were also its weapons. Petroleum, and uranium. For these resources, China would invade Alaska, the US would annex Canada, and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarreling, bickering nation states bent on controlling the last remaining resources on earth...
- Gutterpunk, on 04/23/2008, -1/+21An informed comment on Digg about something that is not IT related! Amazing, I'd digg you twice
- clesch, on 04/23/2008, -6/+26Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
- Kingmichael, on 04/23/2008, -0/+19Because their economy will ALWAYS grow at that rate?
- soupnrc, on 04/23/2008, -4/+23That's the government, not the citizens. The cits' have no clue that their government sucks, they all just trust what they hear and see.
And when I say "They all" I am talking in generalities. A lot of Chinese people are really nice people, they just don't know much better. - Seidoger, on 04/23/2008, -1/+20I'm sure Lockheed Martin could start selling Harvesters
- shakajumbo, on 04/23/2008, -14/+33So how are they going to BBQ their cats now?
- dagnome1984, on 04/23/2008, -2/+20We have 236 years worth of coal with respect to current consumption. China would eat that up like a snack.
- YourSexyMama, on 04/23/2008, -9/+27Remember it's a communist state... We don't deal with communist states. (unless they exploit their people and give us cheap *****).
- jaytea90, on 04/23/2008, -1/+19All the while here, Australia's like "WTF mate"
- alittleroy101, on 04/23/2008, -1/+19Half of this damn thread thinks that China is going to run out of coal in 12 days.
- clesch, on 04/23/2008, -8/+25You should start exporting idiots too. Judging by these comments you've got ***** of those aswell.
- frsrblch, on 04/23/2008, -0/+17Sounds like pretty much every country that went through the industrial revolution. We didn't have a billion people though...
