- fadeout, on 03/16/2008, -3/+158It's pretty insane that we're not boycotting the Chinese Olympics yet. We boycotted the Soviets for far less.
- Napoleone, on 03/16/2008, -3/+100Yeah, but all our ***** wasn't "Made in the U.S.S.R".
- erkokite, on 03/16/2008, -7/+89I love how communists attach "People's" in front of everything. Oh, and ***** China.
- trex279, on 03/16/2008, -2/+76The Tibetans aren't "people"?
- silentphoenix, on 03/16/2008, -3/+61"people's war" = crackdown on freedom
- inactive, on 03/16/2008, -4/+62Keep fighting Tibet! don't give up your right of freedom!
- victrola, on 03/16/2008, -1/+59The Olympics are going to be a travesty, anyway. Olympic coverage of the games will be eclipsed by coverage of journalists being followed and intimidated by the PRC, and probably whatever China will do to make sure the bloggers can't upload anything negative to the internet. I hope nobody boycotts it, the people of China need the world to see what their country is really like.
- bromac, on 03/16/2008, -4/+54Where's the US World Police on this one?
Oh, I guess picking a fight with China would mean picking on someone their own size. Then there's that pesky problem of China being able to sink the already floundering dollar, and you can see who's really running the playground these days. - sanman, on 03/16/2008, -6/+46I think if you see any interview with the Dalai Lama, he's a very nice peaceful guy, who is still supporting non-violence even when his people are being shot in the streets. If he has a flaw, it's that he's too nice for today's rough world. Can you imagine what China would be facing if the Tibetans were like the Afghan Taliban nextdoor? Chinese troops would be getting blasted by IEDs on a daily basis, and suffering from sniper shots round the clock. It's pretty obvious that the Tibetans are a very nice people, who are only lashing out in the most severe desperation.
- jacekpoplawski, on 03/16/2008, -12/+52Iraq == evil
North Korea == neutral
China == good
now that's a morality! - sk11, on 03/16/2008, -3/+28It would be far easier to convince the Dalai Lama to adopt democracy. The PRC wouldn't at all be interested though.
- sanman, on 03/16/2008, -3/+27There was no tyranny in Tibet. That's just Beijing's propaganda. They're also claiming there's tyranny in Taiwan, too. More justification for wars of "liberation" by the PLA.
- Dr00pieS, on 03/16/2008, -1/+22I agree. Although with the Soviets it was a bit different (not much, but a little), I do believe the US should boycott the Olympics if the Chinese do not take their heads out of their asses and realize the world is paying more attention to them now since the Olympics are getting closer and closer. This sort of "conflict resolution" is bad at any time, but especially now it really shows how out of control their government is.
If not the US, then the athletes themselves should become vocal and start to rally people to the cause.
This is unacceptable. Just plain and simply unacceptable. - inactive, on 03/17/2008, -0/+18In communist China, government declares people's war.
- HaloZero, on 03/16/2008, -2/+19Your seriously trusting the Chinese official news agency? Going to start quoting Pravda next?
- AXNJAXN, on 03/16/2008, -0/+17What you're talking about is the three-fifths compromise, which covered slaves, not women, and not gays.
- Flummoxer, on 03/17/2008, -1/+16Sorry, but our wooden puppets are no match for China's leadened toys.
- oboy, on 03/16/2008, -4/+19I hate to say it, but China has a lot more power over the US than the Soviet Union ever did.
- erkokite, on 03/16/2008, -4/+19I wouldn't trust what the Chinese state media says about the situation. I have no trouble siding with Tibet.
- Lionhart, on 03/16/2008, -3/+16Unfortunately we are dependent on China. We were not dependent on the Soviets at all.
- scrag10, on 03/16/2008, -1/+14A society doesn't have to be American in style to be great.
- Willravel, on 03/16/2008, -2/+14The Tibetans deserve protection from the free thinking and empathetic people of the world.
"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke - Hangly, on 03/17/2008, -1/+13The CCP uses the word "people" the same way the US uses words like "freedom." It's a meaningless word meant to make brutality look patriotic.
- bromac, on 03/17/2008, -5/+16More history?
China, which was still ruled by that nice benevolent guy Mao Zedong, invaded Tibet in 1959, killed close to 3000 pacifist monks, and has held the country in an iron grip for over 40 years.
You honestly buy that line of ***** that the monks are attacking people? Then you'd also believe that those folks in Tiananmen were violent and angry, steppin' up against those tanks. - whatthefu, on 03/16/2008, -1/+12Even so, I don't think his non-violence policy is a flaw. Gandhi was successful, and I think it takes a special kind of guts to be able to stand up to a violent force while sticking to your non-violent principles.
- bromac, on 03/17/2008, -4/+15Sorry to be impolite, but you're a ***** idiot.
I said that the US wouldn't attack China because it's more than a match. I implied that they pick on countries that aren't their size, and everyone knows how well that goes.
As for education, here's a bit. You think that China would go nuclear over a proxy war in Tibet? That's just silly. If it wasn't for the economic pressure and the fact that the US is overextended, Tibet would be the perfect place to face down China. You'd have Indian allies on your back, probably including the use of their airfields and safe supply lines, and you could limit the numbers advantage in the mountains. Just look at Afghanistan and how effective the various factions are in their mountains against overwhelming force. If you limit the numerical advantage of China, then it comes down to air and sea power, which the US wins hands down. Too bad your hands are tied.
What the ***** is with you Americans and knee jerking at my post with nothing to back it? - vwerf, on 03/17/2008, -2/+12Down with the commies getting away with murder!!!!!!!!!!
Down with the commies getting away with murder!!!!!!!!!!
Down with the commies getting away with murder!!!!!!!!!!
Down with the commies getting away with murder!!!!!!!!!!
"All people have certain unalienable rights, among these are LIFE, LIBERTY, and the pursuit of happiness." - haterofps3, on 03/17/2008, -5/+15The Proclaimed Government is most likely the old ruling minority who enjoyed complete luxury and authoritarian rule while everyone else lived in poverty and squander.I fear for the people of Tibet because no one is looking out for their interests. Hollywood thinks the Dahlia Lama should be restored to power however he is not interested in democracy either.
Something that needs to be said about China is that we seem to forget that it is a dictatorship and that close to one billion people are fine with that or complacent enough not to overthrow it. The peoples of Tibet really are screwed as there is little chance that they will gain freedom from China.
While Americans Speak of freedoms and rights for the Chinese and the people of Tibet, American citizens are loosing those same rights and privileges. How dare America condemn China for protecting itself against TERRORISTS!
Something needs to be done but I don't think anyone in the west is neutral enough to decide whether China is in the wrong.
Also Canadians should not say boo as they still haven't granted Human Rights to Native American Women(on reserves)! - catwoman2970, on 03/17/2008, -4/+14***** the chinese. my ancestors are from there and i'm ashamed of what that country has become.
- clubdirthill002, on 03/16/2008, -6/+16And they are hosting the Olympics? China should be punished by the Olympic committee for this.
- Napoleone, on 03/16/2008, -3/+13Dyar, I suggest you move to learn to recognize propaganda. For the sake of humanity, do it.
- SSUK, on 03/17/2008, -0/+10Yeah, you better *****' be scared of the Olympic committee. They'll ***** you up.
- Elranzer, on 03/17/2008, -1/+11Any way rightards can turn this into domestic US politics?
- Napoleone, on 03/16/2008, -1/+10I know where you're coming from, but voyeurism isn't gonna help the situation. We monitored Rwanda and, recently, Burma and now Sudan and it's been of no use to the people being slaughtered.
- fuzzmeister, on 03/17/2008, -0/+9In a "physical war", both sides (and the world) would be *****, considering how many nukes are distributed between both sides.
- geezor, on 03/17/2008, -0/+9Iraq = no nukes
North Korea = probably has nukes
China = has nukes
Weak and Evil are synonyms.
Strong and Good are synonyms. - fuzzmeister, on 03/17/2008, -1/+10According to China it is.
- sanman, on 03/17/2008, -0/+9No, that's Taiwan - their official title is Republic of China
They're also another group that People's Liberation Army would like to "liberate" - DeadlyCouncil, on 03/16/2008, -1/+10This is probably going to get worse before it gets better...
- luftrofl, on 03/17/2008, -0/+8Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Guess which one that is.
- erkokite, on 03/16/2008, -0/+8Even if we do monitor it, the information will never be public. China has us by the balls economically.
- Psylo, on 03/17/2008, -6/+14FREE TIBET
FREE TIBET
FREE TIBET - HaloZero, on 03/16/2008, -0/+8China isn't that stupid, they will crackdown, they will impose martial law, they will arrest anybody and everybody who speaks against them. But they aren't going to start randomly killing the Tibetan people.
- bromac, on 03/17/2008, -1/+9Hey dude.
I said that. Did you read all of my THREE ***** SENTENCES before you knee jerked? - Elranzer, on 03/17/2008, -2/+10Between 1945 - 1990, the USA was pretty damn dependent on the USSR as an excuse to further their fear control over the American people. Much like now.
- notouch, on 03/17/2008, -1/+9I want to see more insights form independent journalist or even tourists about this incident. News from main stream media (both Chinese and Western) are biased.
And again, keep in mind that the Chinese central government had done good things for Tibet too, education, transportation system, drinkable water, medical supplies etc. So dear fellow diggers who supports independence of Tibet, please please please state your reasons why Tibet will get more benefit to be independent. So that we know you are supporting free Tibet for a good reason, not just jumping the bandwagon. - soccerbud, on 03/17/2008, -2/+9oh i guess you forgot to mention the part where Tibet was a Chinese province Turing's parts and pieces of 2000 Chinese history.
Most recently, Tibet became an official Chinese province during Manchurian rule in the 1700's until late 1940's. However, during the late 1940's, Tibet took the opportunity of Chinese civil war and "declared independence" from greater China (1949?). However, after the commies drove the nationalists to Taiwan, they marched into Tibet and said you are not going anywhere.
The interesting thing to me is how the western media seems to portray Tibet its own independent country for hundreds and thousands of years until china "invaded" Tibet in 1951. And that is actually far from the truth of history - Hananda, on 03/17/2008, -1/+8I fail to see where he made any reference as to which powerful countries have been doing the invading.
- warnergt, on 03/17/2008, -0/+70.1% of the population of China control over 40% of the wealth. It is no "People's Republic." It is a slave republic ruled by a totalitarian dictatorship.
