China: Famous Photo Was Faked: Photographer, Editor Fired
online.wsj.com — It turns out that train tracks in Tibet aren't where the antelope play. Earlier this week, Xinhua, China's state-run news agency, issued an unusual public apology for publishing a doctored photograph of Tibetan wildlife frolicking near a high-speed train. The deception was uncovered by Chinese Internet users who sniffed out a Photoshop scam.

- Caddis, on 02/27/2008, -7/+3The Tienanmen Square pictures are real. There is actual video of the person standing in front of the tank. In the video, it shows one of his / her buddies coming by and pulling him out of the way. He stood there for a minute or two, but then one of his friends pulled him out of the way.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/27/2008, -0/+10It seems that in addition to hundreds, if not thousands of people, humor died on that day in Tienanmen square...

- 3tcp, on 02/27/2008, -9/+2How many people in China actually get to hear these kinds of stories about how their government lies to them? It seems that it would be damn near impossible for China to filter out all the subversive information from emails and what-not unless they have filtering technology that is vastly superior to that available in the US
- EXreaction, on 02/27/2008, -3/+4And how many people hear about the stories of what happens in our government? I don't really think you realize just how well they control the media. You should hear some of the things I heard about what the US government is doing when I took a visit to Ireland...

- kingmanic, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3People I know in China are aware the news is often slanted towards the government. Although most of the people I know are upper middle class. The other classes may have different perceptions.
- Bodhinature, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1People living in an oppressive society assume their oppressors are lying to them. We, on the other hand, in a "free" society, assume a level of transparency that rarely exists.

- texpundit, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2"When all health care comes from the government, the government can kill you just by refusing to treat you."
And people wonder why a good chunk of US citizens are against universal healthcare...?!? - xNIBx, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1If the government refuses to treat you, then that government wont be reelected. So a universal healthcare system can work but only in democracies. China doesnt have a democracy.
- Kanidia, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1"When you can only get a job from or by the permission of the government, the government can starve you to death just by making you unemployable". -- That is not the case. China functions on a capitalist economy. It is the company's decision whether to hire you or not. Sure, the government has influence over the company... but that has to do with corruption, and not the system of economy that they are using.
Again, the government does not have legal control over the health care system to refuse individuals. However, if you want to discuss corruption and how they do have the de facto power... well then China's government has the de facto power to do anything they want.

- otbeverly, on 02/27/2008, -5/+3Well, I've got to give it to China for at least publishing a correction. I just hope they don't go overboard with it like my newspaper did. We once published a correction for a misidentifying the name of a piece of equipment used for playing Quiditich (or whatever that game is supposed to be called) in a feature written for an upcoming Harry Potter movie. It was a pretty minute detail that would only be noticed by the utmost fanboy, but I guess they all called in to complain and thus a correction was printed.
I can understand publishing a correction for something newsworthy such as this or misidentifying someone or something in a REAL photo (or in this case representing a photographic as a real photo), but for Harry Potter? Come on.- platypibri, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2Accuracy is accuracy. How can we trust you with the big stuff when (based on your post) we obviously can't trust you with the small stuff? - kipmartin, on 02/27/2008, -7/+1China and Japan own about 50% all those bonds issued to balance the deficit. the deficit is managed by floating loans and paying interest on the bonds to those two countries
when i was a kid we were told to worry about Russia taking over the world. Arguably, China has pwned us since the September 11, 2001 attacks. the George W. Bush administration projected in the 2002 U.S. Budget that there would be a $1.288 trillion surplus from 2001 through 2004. wonder what happened to the surplus Bill Clinton ammassed? enter the Bush administration and their spendaholism. 49 %of this swing was due to "administration economic and technical re-estimates," 29 percent was due to "tax relief," (mainly the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, and the remaining 22 percent was due to "war, homeland, and other enacted legislation" (mainly expenditures for the War on Terror, Iraq War, and homeland security).
in other words, our $9 TRILLION deficit was mostly amassed during the last 7 years. each American basically has a $75K loan from China and we pay the interest by having reduced services, a faltering dollar that buys less and less each year, and through tapping money in Medicare and Medicaid. our children will be paying twice that if the current trend continues fie another 8 years.

- Hermmunster, on 02/27/2008, -3/+1I know that China is repressive to freedoms found to be inherent in all mankind. I also know that they are manipulating our currency and they censor everything their leaders tell them to.
So, I also know they are abusing their environment. I know their environment has to be suffering drammatically. But as I read this about 1 man, 1 car, 1 camera, 1 year I asked myself whether this mattered to me.
My conclusion is that as far as their conservations efforts go, they don't do anything. Why would they protect their wildlife while destroying the lives of their citizens. So, my conclusion was that I don't really care about a doctored photo or whether the editor was fired.- enrydice, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0you know what???
