China's justification for censoring the internet: "Well everybody else is doing it!"

China, do you need some time alone in the corner to think about what you said?

Talk about an unfitting title. The article basically says "Yeah, we're going to try to take care of all of this, but we can't stop everybody who is going to try to counterfeit Olympic memorabilia." It also says "We don't allow access to some sites, and that probably won't change." I don't see how that means the media can't do their jobs.

If the media are there covering the Olympics, I don't see it being a problem. If the next hack reporter who is supposed to be there covering the Olympics decides they're going to do a garbage humanitarian piece, I think they'll axe it.

I'm with everyone else as far as China and Human Rights goes, they have some catching up to do, but this is a non-story.

The title and description of this digg are inaccurate and distorted based on what is actually in the article.

The IOC did it again, awarding the 2014 Winter Games to Sochi Russia. That is 100 mi from Abkhazia where the Russians are brutally occupying part of sovereign Georgia. There could well be a Balkan style war going on when the games arrive.

The Olympic Committee is nothing more than a group of influential filthy and greedy old men who are not above taking bribes of sexual favors and money in exchange for the rights to host the Olympic Games. Allowing China with perhaps the worst human rights record in recent time to host the games is no surprise; corruption attracts corruption.

I don't see anywhere in the article that says they promised such and such in exchange for the olympics...

I wish protesters would stop protesting the Olympics in China. If they want justice in China, then let the Olympics go forward. Nothing screams "Human Rights Violations" like 100's of journalist getting drunk and testing to Police.

China thinks they are going to have the ability to control the world coming into the country because they are used to controlling their citizens. The Chinese government better remember that these reporters have cameras with live satellites links to their NEWS desks. When they are trying to silence anyone, the world will be watching live on CNN and FOX will have the frame by frame.

Oh boy, during the Olympics, the least exciting thing is going to be the events.

To all those people who think China is evil, they have bad human rights etc, first I want to ask you a simple question, why are you so excited and actually enjoy pointing out that another country has a problem?
Maybe the problem is with you - you get excited to say someone else is evil, someone else is doing a wrong thing when your own country is doing many wrong things also. I've lived in England, USA, China, Australia, now in Hong Kong and everywhere its basically normal people going about their normal lives, trying to make money, love their wife/husband/family and be a good social citizen. No one cares about the government, would prefer they get out of the way so business can be done and everyone can do well off. Its the same everywhere. China is just like any western country, there's no difference if you want to look at the history books.
China is going through a industrial period, do you know what England was like in its industrial period? Do you know what the human right were for children in England working in mines? How about in the USA?
Do you know that England has fought with almost every country in the world at one time or another? That USA is the most agressive country in the world and cases/funds most of the worlds conflicts now.
Look in your own backyard for your own problems that you might be able to do something about, China is growing and they are doing their best to manage it and balance it with a very large population.
To those people who think that its "evil" that China is not a democracy, I want you to imagine if China was a democracy, then it would be easy to bribe the poor people with free food to vote for you. They don't care about who it is thats ruling them, they care about their basic needs. You can't have a intelligent democracy with unintelligent population, just take a look at USA voting for Bush the second time around.

How many of you people have dealt with mainland chinese on a regular basis? The vast majority young kids are angry frothing-at-the-mouth nationalists, whose answer to any argument is to cover their ears and scream 'one china' until they pass out. As individuals they're annoying. En mass they're powerful angry spam machines. I think I like my corrupt western internet the way it is.

Unless you count private intranets, this is definitely not the case in the USA. Accessing some sites might land you in jail (kiddie porn, etc) - but there is no gigantic government-controlled firewall blocking your access to this.

What can they do about it? Shame embarrass and ridicule them unceasingly in front of the entire world until they comply. Respect and saving face is a big thing in Chinese culture and if they were mocked over this on the world stage they wouldn't be too happy about it.

China really does have very strict anti-piracy laws. They've just been impossible to enforce. It's not the all-powerful dictatorship that people see it as. There's logistical problems when one billion people in your country pirate and you have to stop all of them.

It is so easy to point fingers and say that is what is wrong with the world today! And China is to blame because they dont have human rights and Democracy. And it "sells" and some people dug it so it makes the circus of media works.
I think "Democracy" is over rated these days. And I am sick and tired of the attacks against China. I wont defend it with poetic words I'm just suggesting to go to China, It isn't expensive, considering 1 US dollar can exchange almost 7 RMBs and the tourist Visa is very easy to get, compare to the US visa is like a park ticket and CIA entry pass. So, I think western people should consider going there and see for themselves, talk to the locals before judging other countries.
