- AndrewDB, on 11/07/2009, -2/+25Everyone needs to get the final parts of this letter: PTSD doesn't turn people into killers, most Muslims aren't evil, and whether we should stay or go in Afghanistan has nothing to do with this.
As someone who served in Basic but didn't make it out because of medical reasons myself, this was positively gut-wrenching to read.
I think it should be read by absolutely everyone. - vault, on 11/07/2009, -1/+22Not the time or place
- Insightful, on 11/07/2009, -3/+20Dugg for rational reaction to an irrational act of violence and terror.
- Bukowsky, on 11/06/2009, -1/+17that really is a moving letter to read.
- Isenborg, on 11/07/2009, -2/+14Funny how so many swarm to lay blame on everyone except the gutless wretch who decided to wade into a room full of unarmed people and begin ending their lives. Did this bastard check the belief system of each person before he dispatched them?
Some people seem to be having difficulty laying the blame at the proper feet, but I'm damn sure God, or Allah, knows exactly which which pathetic, delusional, murdering bastard will pay eternally for this cowardly act. - kidgentry, on 11/07/2009, -2/+13There are more than one billion Muslims in the world, to characterize one man's actions with such a number is ridiculous.
- kidgentry, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11whatever his motive, his actions are wrong. Hatred won't resolve anything.
- TBITS, on 11/07/2009, -3/+12Please, go to the nearest military base and tell that to a group of soldiers. Oh and record it, because the ass kicking you'd recieve would be epic.
Our soldiers don't shoot civilians, and if you happen to be carrying a machiene gun in a war zone you're probably far from innocent.
I don't care for this war, but I do respect our troops. - Isenborg, on 11/07/2009, -3/+9That is an utterly repulsive comment.
- kidgentry, on 11/07/2009, -4/+9Its true, for each dead Iraqi or Afghani a new generation of hatred towards the United States is born.
That being said, while the wars may have been unjust and unnecessary to a certain degree, the US has a moral obligation to continue. It's an incredibly convoluted issue, with no easy answers, but the stakes are too high for a fold.
To win this war - if it is winnable at all - the United States must do its utmost to end the Islamic-Western polarity. This starts and ends with Palestine, it is a symbolic issue that all Muslims are deeply sympathetic too, if the United States ceases in its unconditional support for Israel, fundamentalists will lose their most potent fodder. - NoLibertarians, on 11/07/2009, -2/+7@Panda,,Please tell us when you were in Iraq and Afghanistan?
- sanman, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Pre-Traumatic Stress Syndrome?
- bossm4n, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I think you misunderstood what he was saying. They couldn't get the EMT's to the wounded until the area was secure for fear they would be put at risk. It was assumed there were multiple shooters.
- rmxz, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4"PTSD doesn't turn people into killers"
Totally separate issue from this instance - but isn't one of the big concerns around PTSD that it can lead to increased violence? - StopBanninMePlz, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Indeed - PTSD can turn people into killers. It increases their fear response and paranoia. Flashbacks can make people do crazy things. Such as the guy who shot and killed a trick or treater through his door last year.
This guy didn't have PTSD though. - jgzman, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I am distressed by the fact that you seem to dismiss Allah as a fairy tale, but accept God as a fact. Proof belongs nowhere in that statement.
AT BEST, I can believe you are claiming that God isn't really like the Muslims portray him to be. But I'm not that generous.
Really, you seem to be whining because someone got unicorns in your vampire story. - BotchaMcCoola, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3Often it is also the brave one's' way out. You can't win either way. Sorry about that.
- JoeNaguib, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4This is tragic regardless of how you look at.
Politics aside, regardless of what you think of what's going on in the world, the fact of the matter is a man attacked and killed several innocent people. It doesn't matter what the context is. If this happens in a school, it's a tragedy, so why is this happening at Fort Hood any different? Innocent people lost their lives for no reason, it's a sad waste of human life, and even if that's what's going on in Iraq, that's a different story. - jgzman, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4From a strictly military POV, suicide bombers are 100% justified. It is the only weapon they have; it's either that or be conquered. A cowardly weapon, to be sure, but I'd might prefer to be a free coward than conquered with my honor intact.
And make no bones about it, they think we are there to conquer them, stamp out their culture, and seise their wealth. (such as it is) I don't think that is what we are there for, but considering some of the ***** we've pulled over there, I can hardly blame them. - theonlywizdum, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Die in a fire you useless waste of space. Are you over there? Oh, thats right, you're just some half-wit dumbass sitting in his computer chair, thousands of miles away, judging people that he has never met.
- sonder, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Religion of peace.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2True. But as 911 showed we must worry more about the better educated Egyptians and Saudis.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2"over a million" nice job pulling that number out of your ass. Even the people that are against the war only cite 104,424. http://www.iraqbodycount.org/
And if you want to include Afghanistan, you can see here that even the highest estimates are less than 9,000.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_casualties_o ...
And that 102,424 includes those killed by suicide bombers and attacks from the insurgents, not just people shot by soldiers. So, again, die in a fire you useless waste of space. - evil-doer, on 11/07/2009, -2/+4how exactly was he "gutless" and "cowardly"? doing something like this you KNOW you are gonna get shot and most likely killed. a coward would not step into that situation.
to be clear.. it was obviously wrong and i think he should get the death penalty, but come on. - Krakerjax, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3It's SOP not to bring in the EMT until it's clear that the area is safe and secure.
- RossDuprey, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2That's like saying we should question Christianity because of Kirk Cameron. [Rolls eyes].
- TexMexRex, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2From a strictly military POV, it is justified for various religious leaders and zealots to recruit 12-17 year old children to strap dynamite to themselves? They have no other weapons? Most of our soldiers killed are killed my heavy machine guns, mortars, artillery shells and other devices turned into IEDs. Most civilians killed are killed by machine guns. These are simple facts.
They are not retarded. They know we are not there to conquer them, and that is why they target the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan, it's leaders and most of all it's police, military and suporters far more often than our soldiers. 100s of Iraqi's die for every U.S. Soldier. They want to seize power from the democratically elected governments of these countries as we leave. I can and do blame them. - newms32, on 11/07/2009, -3/+4"Cause the EMTs didn't get there for almost an hour (they thought there was a second shooter)."
I wonder how many died because the EMTs didn't come in time? - Isenborg, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1100% correct sir.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2I like how you posted one article, about 5 soldiers that killed 5 civilians, and used it to show how all soldiers kill lots of civilians. Those people are ***** up in the head. There are lots of people like that in this world, and unfortunately some of them end up in the military. But it must be true, because you saw it on liveleak, right? I will agree that some civilians are mistaken for insurgents, and they are shot by US soldiers, but this number is very low, and as you can see from that nice article you posted, they are going to jail for it.
- TexMexRex, on 11/07/2009, -2/+3The need to be politically correct is what allowed this guy to remain in the Army. To be a Major and ultimately to commit this crime. Out Military people are constantly being told they have to sensitive, that they can't generalize or stereotype. And while that is good for the most part, at some point you have to say: Gee the Army Major publicly claiming the suicide bombers are justified needs to be removed from the Army.
Quax, The vast majority of civilians killed in Iraq and Afghanistan have been killed by Insurgents, Moslems. You can call them freedom fighters, you can call them what you want, but to imply that American Soldiers are the ones killing civilians is nonsense. If you want to claim its a reaction to the presence of American Soldiers that's fine too, but the reality these people are fighting to gain or maintain power. - hymneforthedead, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2sad.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I liked your reply but must confess I threw that out as a stimulus for out-of-the-box thinking. I tend to be agnostic mostly but I find it amusing that the abrahamic religions agree among themselves that they merely have different names for one single god. All seem to accept that without examination. That is, without good proof or argument. A favorite thing for me is leading people to examine their assumptions. Btw, I do agree that whatever else may be true of such acts they do not appear to be cowardly.
- demiz23, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2But it is hard not to be patronizing to people so LOUD, self confident, and self diluted.
You guys are showing a great example of how EVERYONE(at least multiple sides) can be WRONG.
We can blame people's past atrocities and 'eye for eye' it nearly all the way back to the prehistoric. So to arbitrarily pick a single blip out of the entire course of humanity and claim someone or some nation started it is why this ***** keeps happening. War is not a new thing and it has never been humane or anything but atrocities.
In keeping myself from starting a novel here, my point;
we have to just stop pointing fingers, righteousness and and revenge are what got us here. - sanman, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1I see the usual round of condemnations from Arab and Muslim activists intended to pre-empt backlash
Frankly, I find such condemnations to be self-serving, selfish, and low in credibility, because most of the time such activists mainly devote their efforts to demonizing and dehumanizing US servicemen for propaganda purposes. This is what gives the nutcases the psychological ammunition to go on killing sprees. This guy was a trained psychiatrist, and still he went on a killing spree. It shows the depth of the hate ideology being promoted by Muslim activists.
And then these activists quickly want to turn the incident around to focus on how it will lead to more discrimination against them. How completely indecent. They don't even care to see any personal accountability or responsibility on their side.
The values of self-criticism, personal responsibility and personal restraint are not equally distributed around the world. They are not equally distributed among all cultures - and the number of suicide attacks emanating from particular communities is ample proof of this. I don't see a lot of Tibetan suicide bombers blowing up Chinese army posts. - sbullo, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1ROFLMAO!
- flashyspoons, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1(Once they convinced them the blood drenching my clothes wasn't mine I spent the day being interviewed by the alphabet.)
ABC CNN CSNBC FOX TNT TBS etc etc,
That was funny. - jgzman, on 11/08/2009, -1/+2I was addressing my POV issue to the proverbial 'man-in-the-street.' The leadership does know better, and notice that they rarely blow themselves up. It is the underlings who do not know better who are the weapons.
- TBITS, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2Quaxon it was people like you that forced the US out of Vietnam. I had the pleasure of talking with a south vietnamiese navy seal who had fought for his country long before we were there and many years after. This man is kind quiet and gentile, he didn't sign up to shoot civilians, and after out conversation all I could do was apologise for leaving his people stranded. When the north invaded they executed thousands and to this day those linked to the south are oppressed and anyone caught speaking I'll of the government or the long dead hochimin is delt with.
I'm not a fan of this war, infact I believe Lawerence of Arabia was right when he said that Arabia should never be divided. The middle east has been continously fighting for centuries. That's what happens when you let rligious factions rule. And unfortunately if we left another one would come to power and opress those that don't believe what they do. Whether we like it or not we are now obligated to try and stop that from happening. - BookaShade, on 11/07/2009, -4/+4Don't mind Panda he is a complete dumbass.
let his hate consume him it will just rot his core and there will be nothing left =D. - PandaBearShenyu, on 11/07/2009, -3/+3I never said these people deserved it, this is tragic, but I was warning American people that because of the continuation of this conflict, people around the world won't be able to sympathize with these soldiers who lost their lives.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1God and Allah are the same? Many of us want some proof of that. Don't fall for childish fairy tales.
- demiz23, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1I apologize in advance, as I will come off condescending to plenty of people I am sure, it seems an inevitability when I try to say anything on digg that's not just a straight up joke.
- RossDuprey, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1You have a valid point however the way you said it keeps me from diggin.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/08/2009, -1/+1Great, keep on showing us how ***** ignorant you are. Our military doesn't send tanks after unarmed civilians or poorly armed militants. The only tanks we have over there were for taking down Saddam's tanks. I guess you call ak-47s, C4, RDX, artillery shells, mortars, .50 cal truck mounted machine guns, and RPGs "***** they made at home". We also don't drop multimillion dollar bombs on targets that don't need to be blown up. There is no way any officer is going to let that happen, because one wasted bomb could mean 50 dead US Soldiers who get mowed down by a legitimate target that needed to be taken down. But you want that to happen don't you? You ***** coward.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1He's a coward because he opened fire on a room full of unarmed people.
- Ryanman7, on 11/07/2009, -6/+6First of all, you're right that this country has no right to be anywhere else in this world. No god died and made us police. Our soldiers have done terrible things, some ordered, some not. There's no question that this entire conflict is a disgusting, politically motivated *****.
But you lost me when you said these people deserve it. If he had killed Bush or Rumsfield - someone who planned these invasions or whatever, that would be one thing. Mowing down unarmed people who have done nothing but be your comrade's in arms? I balk at the suggestion that any of these people deserved it. And you using this guys actions as proof positive of our mistakes is no better then Fred Phelps picketing funerals. - quaxon, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2^ I agree, this is also why i believe the US troops are cowards too, they are fighting a third world nation armed with ***** they made at home with multi-dollar weaponry, blast proof tanks and bombs from 30,000 ft in the air.
