- ScreenRant, on 09/04/2008, -45/+198From Wikipedia: "Chicago does not allow the registration of handguns, which has the effect of outlawing their possession, unless they were grandfathered in by being registered before April 16, 1982."
Obviously gang-bangers didn't get the memo... - Idgit, on 09/05/2008, -17/+130Ummm what about all the civilian deaths in Iraq? Are we not counting them just because they're not Americans?
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -36/+141Buried as inaccurate, compare civilian death to civilian death you cowards!
- induren, on 09/05/2008, -48/+136This title is beyond idiotic. Ultimate fail. Civilians were killed in Chicago not soldiers. Civilian deaths in Iraq have been a hell of a lot more than this number. Uberfail!
- DavidtheMavin, on 11/11/2008, -18/+104Wow, there's some pretty basic stupidity going on here:
You would have to compare TROOP CASUALTIES in Chicago for that claim to be logical.
If you compared IRAQI CIVILIAN casualties with CHICAGO'S then you'd be getting somewhere logically. There were 756 Iraqi murders in the month of May to Chicago's 125 OVER THE ENTIRE SUMMER.... idiots.
http://www.iraqbodycount.org/database/ - Christianptriot, on 09/04/2008, -118/+199What is truly sad is that our troops are safer in a war zone - because they retain the means to fight back and to stop assailants - but the people of Chicago, thanks to obama and other Illinois politicians - are defenseless victims without any type of firearm to defend the, selves, waiting to be robbed, raped, terrorized and murdered at the hands of criminals who know that their victims ARE defenseless.
- Chahrlie5, on 09/04/2008, -114/+195Quick send in Obama to organize some peace in the community!
- Spuy767, on 09/05/2008, -12/+93Gun laws only keep guns out of the hands of those who obey the laws.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -36/+108I thought guns were illegal in Chicago - How can people get shot then?
- dekuscrub, on 09/04/2008, -55/+123I'm not going to blame this on Obama.. people were killing eachother before he was around.
But it is a good example of liberal policies at their finest. Take away gun rights for law-abiding citizens and go easy on criminals ... waste all your money on "feel good" liberal policies that don't accomplish anything, and here is what you get.
Reminds me of Wash DC. Handgun ban and on of the ***** crime-infested cities in the country. - Waiting2awake, on 09/05/2008, -31/+94.."why isn't anyone calling for a withdrawal from Illinois?"....
Because Illinois is part of America, and Iraq is a sovereign nation? - sandersdamnit, on 09/05/2008, -26/+87Wow, looks like I walked into a Right-Wing circle-jerk! I guess I had better put on my non-agenda skewed facts parachute, because it looks like I am going down.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -21/+72Proving once again that Iraqi civilians don't count to the American warmonger. 123 people died all summer? That's still a very good week in Iraq. A good weekend even. Pathetically lame.
- vvvvvvv, on 09/05/2008, -12/+62Add in the Iraqi Security Forces and Civilian Deaths
- Spuy767, on 09/05/2008, -17/+67Those anti-gun laws are working marvellously.
- Whipsnard, on 09/05/2008, -9/+54Having lived in Chicago for over 18 years, that sounds like a normal summer.
- GreatWhiteSnark, on 09/04/2008, -86/+130Pretty disruptive numbers, but good luck getting your sentiment past Digg users.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -14/+56This is the same stupid talking point that Republicans made about California a few years ago. Detroit has 916,952 residents. We have 130,000 soldiers in Iraq. Do the math. The percentage of American deaths compared to population is much higher in Iraq than it is in Detroit.
And if less soldiers are being killed, shouldn't that be a good reason to withdraw the troops? - ProfessorSYM, on 09/05/2008, -12/+51That's not surprising given the fact that billions of American tax dollars are spent in Iraq each year.
Put a portion of that into our own country and we just might see a change. - wild, on 09/05/2008, -25/+64Jesus, talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel to try and prove anything. Its one statistic and its completely irrelevant to the election.
- elshizzo, on 09/05/2008, -13/+52This is such misleading BS. There are over 20 times as many American's in Chicago than there are in Iraq. You have to look at death toll per capita, not death toll overrall. That said, we are only counting only American's dead and not the millions of Iraqi's who have died - what kind of racist BS is that?
- bxblox, on 09/05/2008, -18/+55So, what right wing blog is this submission being linked from? There cant be this many people dumb enough to try to blame shootings in chicago on obama...
- ClosedCaption, on 09/05/2008, -12/+48"According to the Defense Department, 65 U.S. soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period."
Death only affects soldiers? What about the Iraqi's? Dont they count when making a death comparision?
I'm just sayin - vvvvvvv, on 09/05/2008, -14/+49uhh.. By my calculations total deaths in Iraq from May to September 2008 is 1797
- michl2077, on 09/04/2008, -60/+94Inexcusable
- Hetman, on 09/05/2008, -5/+37How about we withdrawel all the gang violence by ending the war on drugs. And also I would like the right to carry a weapon. Because most of these are gang related shootings, by individuals with unregistered guns. Finally I really do not consider anyone who lives south of 47th st and west of western to actually live in chicago. Those are just areas where crazy people shoot each other over stupidity and drug deals.
- hugoguzman, on 09/05/2008, -26/+55Dumb logic. What about all of the contractors and civilians that are dying because of the occupation-related violence? I guess they don't count, huh.
- TheDHC, on 09/05/2008, -4/+32Chicago has a population of 3 million, we have 130,000 troops in Iraq. do the math, the percentage is much higher in iraq.
- boombye, on 09/05/2008, -11/+38Obama isn't exactly the Mayor of Chicago or the Chief of Police.
I support Obama because Republicans are so scared of threats from the Middle-East when it's more hardcore here in America with the criminals we already have to deal with. - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -17/+44Well said sir!
- dshPls, on 09/05/2008, -5/+32Clearly we need to liberate Chicago, overthrow its leaders, and establish a democracy. (I thought this article was funny and dugg it, but there is an inverse argument too..)
- samcrut, on 09/05/2008, -5/+31Kinda left out the Iraqis in that death toll. They're not "people?"
- vvvvvvv, on 09/05/2008, -3/+29Add in the Iraqi Security Forces and Civilian Deaths
- dext3r, on 09/05/2008, -3/+29homicides by year:
2000: 628
2001: 666
2002: 647
2003: 598
2004: 448
2005: 449
2006: 467
2007: 442
Summer 08: An estimated 125 people were shot and killed over the summer.
So, 1/4 of the people die in summer, where more people are out and about doing things. I'm willing to bet that less homicides occur during the cold months.
What ANY of this has to do with Iraq is baffling to me. - SeventhSon, on 09/05/2008, -6/+31If we outlaw the goats, only the outlaws will have goats.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -15/+39move to Iraq it's safer
- stilesja, on 09/05/2008, -1/+24I can excuse it. I am not funding Chicagoans to murder each other. They do it for free. However, it costs me quite a bit more for only half as many murders in Iraq. Iraq is just not a good investment from a "dollars per murder" basis and that is why we should leave.
- zeitgueist, on 09/05/2008, -6/+28Inaccurate title. Please update me when the civilians dead in Iraq actually matter to you.
- EtherGnat, on 09/05/2008, -12/+34Damn him for having the balls to work in a rough area that needs help the most.
- N3tw0rk, on 09/05/2008, -2/+24Obama led a voter-registration effort in Chicago that added tens of thousands of people to the rolls. He worked with poor families on the South Side to get improvements in public housing, particularly the removal of asbestos. Obama also fought for student summer jobs and a program to keep at-risk children from dropping out of school. He ran Project VOTE. The organization recruited hundreds of registrars to sign up new voters, particularly within the city's black population. Registration jumped nearly 15 points between the 1992 primary and the general election.
- Minarchian, on 09/05/2008, -10/+31I think the anti-self defense crowd loves this.
They "think" it gives them even more reason to ban self-defense items.
To them, the more blood spilled, the more power they can take. - beasty_dave_Mk2, on 09/05/2008, -5/+26"...what kind of racist BS is that?"
Reich-wing neo-tard BS at its finest. - Chahrlie5, on 09/04/2008, -16/+36Grabbing at straws?
You have me confused with liberals and their fellow media.
It's okay. Now go back to finding more blog posts about Palin being a man and faking births - dontbejack, on 09/05/2008, -0/+20@lajaw
As have Chicago residents. - inigomntoya, on 09/05/2008, -2/+21Bring The Police Home!!
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+20More *Americans* shot in Iraq. that is a very misleading title. as if Iraqis are not people or something.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -8/+26Spare the rhetoric. High murder rates in cities come from criminals killing one another (primarily gang-related disputes), not random acts of violence against innocent people.
- sryan8913, on 09/05/2008, -2/+20Guess we aren't counting dead Iraqi's as people anymore?
- ScienceDoc, on 09/05/2008, -3/+20This most have been in the talking point from their fuhrer Rove this am.
- EtherGnat, on 09/05/2008, -2/+19@inigomntoya
I know what to do to prevent US deaths in Iraq. If you have a solution for how to prevent murder in Chicago I'd certainly be interested in that as well.
The fact is the two situations are completely unrelated, regardless of what kind of absurd comparisons people might try and draw. -
