- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -9/+76I'm Muslim and if my community needed a church/temple/synagogue i would donate. Not every Muslim is *****.
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+72That's unfortunate because charity, philanthropy, and fraternity are among the most important teachings of Christ.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+69No, but that doesn't make the gesture any less noble.
- MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -21/+74That's really nice of them, nice to see not all Christians (cough RadicalRon cough) want us back in the Dark Ages fighting the Crusades...
- Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -11/+50@ twoodge:
And how much money have you donated to African kids starving? How much do you spend on monthly internet? You know you could be feeding up to 10 kids a day on that monthly bill. So how about you shut up now, M'Kay? - carwasher24, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32This is definitely nice of them to do this.
As a Muslim I can remember when living in Palestine nearly 60 years ago, before we had this Arab/Israeli conflict, that we'd help build Mosques and Churches right next to eachother.
It's unfortunate how things have changed.
We have young people like nickelbagoffunk who say "my way of the highway" and unfortunately don't even realize the horrible effect it has on everybody, not just themselves. - Enasni1212, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30And a "worthy cause," would be building a new church to whatever version of Christianity you happen to believe in, right?
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Because he's never posted a SINGLE comment on digg without plugging it. We probably are in a slight agreement, but atleast I don't spam my ***** website every time I make a halfassed retort.
- mwolfzorn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Good job stereotyping all Muslims as bad people who take whatever they want without giving back to the world...
This Meurer guy sounds like he is doing what a real Christian should do... Christianity isn't about converting people it's about: "All that matters to me about them is keeping peace in the area," Meurer remarked
The Muslims in this area are primarily Turkish. And keeping peace is important since Turkey isn't really happy with Europe right now. There is extreme anti-Turkish feelings across Europe. Turkey has had an application into the EU almost since it's founding. They joined the European Economic Community in 1959, and have been trying since 1987 to become a full member of the European Union. They have been trying for 20 years, their application process began before many states even existed: Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, etc, which are now full members of the EU.
It isn't primarily a threat of war, but attacks on immigrants and retaliation for treatment from the immigrants. - flernk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25@humperdeath
I must have missed when Jesus said, "And after you have turned the other cheek, kick thine enemy's ass without remorse or mercy." It must have been in the same book where Jesus advocates war, hate, discrimination, anger, racism, political patriotism, and environmental neglect. - nickelbagoffunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21According to the teachings of Christ, christians should respond to Islam as they respond to Atheism...with love. I don't think your statement would make sense in this case.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22your intellectual prowess is amazing.
- Hetman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24This is a great thing. Im personally an agnostic. But when people help each other like this it only helps spread tolerance. And that is very very importand in this day and age.
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21saikhan has got it right. Jesus preached love for your neighbor, caring for those less fortunate. There's nowhere where he said that if you don't join religion X, you're wrong.
Most modern theologians agree that all the different forms of belief (including non-belief) have something important to bring to the table. All have different insights on life -- and nobody's beliefs are inherently wrong.
This church's contributions to the local mosque is a perfect example of how Christians should live. People who say otherwise doesn't really understand Christianity. - towner, on 10/12/2007, -27/+44Do you think that any European Muslims / mosques would ever donate money to build a synagogue / church / temple ?
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -22/+39Well I think you're an idiot. They aren't all extremists!!!
The KKK was a God Fearing "Christian" group.. maybe someone like you prefers their kind. - Phrag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Its kind of scary that as a non-theist, I sometime suspect I know more about the Bible than some self proclaimed Christians.
Luke 6:27-36
[27] "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. [29] If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. [30] Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. [31] Do to others as you would have them do to you.
[32] "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. [35] But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. [36] Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
I am not trying to say that Muslims are the enemy of Christians but, if you preceive it that way, it is all the more reason to do good things to them. - archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22"As long as 'some' are, then thats too many."
Some Christians are a-holes. Is that too many? - Hetman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I can see how some Christians especially Evangelists would never do that. But the catholic church has a long history with islam and they should be trying to inspire cooperation between both of them.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20The KKK didn't bomb the baptist churches because they were anti-christian, they bombed them because they were anti-black. The KKK is a protestant group and point to the bible to justify their bigotry and hate.
- Phrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@vertinox
Oddly enough, I have been unfortunate enough to know both a Buddhist and an Amish *****. They were both the exceptions to their communities which were generally very nice. - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Good, cause we don't like you either
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@ flusher: Will you please stop spamming your ***** link all over the place? Seriously, you're just making an ass of yourself!
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Catholics aren't out to just help other catholics - the idea of being Catholic is all about doing what is right and helping others. Love for everyone being the underlying theme.
I applaud the decision - it's very selfless and it's nice to see genuine good acts these days. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14A couple of quotes from the Bible and you got Christianity all figured out, hurrah!
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think the Church does believe Jehova(Or any alternative spelling) and God, are the same

The crusades just used Christianity to get the people united to reconquer the land that Muslims had taken in the centuries prior. It wasn't a pre-emptive "holy war", it was a reaction to past Muslim land-conquering, sold to the masses as a holy cause. - dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ Ghstfce
Sure have -- but Christians aren't bound by the ten commandments. The issue comes up in one of Paul's letters where he addresses the issue of Gentiles who want to be Christians – Paul basically says that those people (and all Christians) aren't bound to Jewish laws and customs. The Jews found spiritual revelation and insight through the Torah, the Law. Christians find revelation through Christ, through the way he lived his life; if you call yourself a Christian, then he is who you should follow, not the commandments. Of course, the commandments are important to Christians because they model how Christ lived -- but they aren't technically Christian law. - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How is it misguided? Did you read the article? Do you know how that particular church got the money for theirs? The protestants donated money and the catholics felt they should do the same for the newest members of the community.
To do something good to expect no return or glory is truly noble. To do something to get a pat on the back is misguided. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Ford, GM and Chrysler.
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dude, you didn't even spell Jekyll correctly in your alias!
- mwolfzorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's so ignorant. If the church was trying to raise money for itself do you thing they would choose to say fundraising for building a Mosque? They would do something that more people are interested in donating to, like saving puppies or some feel good about yourself cause, and something less controversial...
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9kaiser44: your islamophobia is getting the better of you; now you're starting to foam at the mouth. calm down. there are 1.4 billion people who are muslim in this world. what's the good in blinding hating that many people? you seem to have convicted 1.4 billion people by the actions of a few and are hell-bent on making the rest of them pay.
- Xanin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Ah so your principles only apply to suit your own needs?
- Ninja337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"There are extereme's in every dogmatic religion"

- Learn2Think, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8towner: Do you think that any European Muslims / mosques would ever donate money to build a synagogue / church / temple ?
Don't know about the European Muslims but here in CA I know a lot of Muslims who regularly donate to the food camps runs by local churches.
But then, all the poor blokes get in return is "Muslims need to do more to condemn the fanatics within". - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Cooperation over what? They both teach EXTREMELY different world views. I can understand the wish for peace, but the teachings of both completely contradict each other."
Do you not have friends you disagree with? Co-workers? Peers? Ahh, so there should be no cooperation between such ppl.
Jeeze ppl I swear there are such closed minded ppl on both sides. - guinness3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You might be interested what the church says about the muslims according to the catechism.
The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day." - grimjestor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7heh. you earned my digg down, and i don't even care about the issue!
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I found three sections in the Catholic Catechism (one of the most authoritative document representing Catholic dogma, third after the Bible and the Pope's instructions) that could be used to support this fund-raiser, when considering:
The common good:

Respect for the Human person:

Why do I get the feeling that your church would gladly oblige your wishes and hope that you never darken their doorstep again? - VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well Sharia law will not get a foothold in the U.S. so I wouldn't be getting your undies in a bind. They might attempt it, but no one here wants it, and would slam it down quicker than anything if it did.
People said the same thing about the ones you pointed out, communism and the kkk.. - Valarauka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10People whose two weapons are ignorance and a digg down button .. no wait, whose three weapons are ignorance, lack of humor and a digg down button .. no wait ..
- chucklehead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9AffanJam - a hearty thumbs up for you. Thanks for making me a little less jaded this fine Monday.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That is not wholy correct. The catholic church has made a point of helping ppl of various faiths without receiving anything back. This is no different.
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6ahhh.. That's ok Dustin00 we still love you! Jesus does too!
Maybe a Novena to Saint Osmund is in order?

Now I remember. Thats in the book of Charlston Heston in the really really new testament. - kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6what the ***** are you talking about? Most of those news casts have nuggets of truth you have to watch them all to get some idea of what the ***** is going on, watch with a jaundice eye and look yes even at fox. Read the newspapers and the Internet, don,t be a dumb ass, but if you think CNN is the answer to truth you got a problem, they serve the same purpose as fox ,just another outlet to sift through.
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't think steelchicken was referring to your grammar. Unfortunately, your problem runs much deeper than that.
