- dotlizard, on 03/20/2008, -2/+101i think it is ridiculously inhumane that her request was not legally granted. i am glad she is finally at peace, in spite of those gov't officials who so callously decided she should continue to suffer such horrors and pain. euthanasia in this case seems such an obvious choice, who could deny her that? i can't imagine.
- fitqueenb, on 03/20/2008, -0/+58Wow, she really suffered, so sad. Bless her family.
- KorRyal, on 03/20/2008, -1/+50It's good that she got what she wanted. You shouldn't need legal permission to die. What a ***** world.
- lsfloyd, on 03/20/2008, -0/+44Very sad story.
- dinobot, on 03/20/2008, -3/+41I'm just glad that it is over, I just really hope the french police won't go around trying to tie her relatives as facilitators in aiding suicide, or outright killing her out of mercy. If so, all they should do is look at the appeal court who denied this lady a dignified and peaceful death.
Heck, even animals get to suffer less and die peacefully and with dignity because of severe ailments but a human can't get the same? - zcreem, on 03/20/2008, -0/+37RIP, having lost both my parents to cancer I know what an utter battle it is, in the end death is often a blessing.
- ennTOXX, on 03/20/2008, -1/+33If you had never dugg this, I probably would never had known. Nice digg dtele, I had to shout it out to my friends... :||
- bigpeeler, on 03/20/2008, -1/+27Must have been an awesome person. She's smiling in BOTH photos. Rest easy, kind soul.
- WriterSD, on 03/20/2008, -0/+26It's so sad... My heart breaks for her and her family. :(
- nina78, on 03/20/2008, -0/+25:-(
- Octaman, on 03/20/2008, -2/+23It's a ***** disgrace that euthanasia is illegal in France. Yesterday Hugo Claus (a famous Belgian artist, poet and novelist) passed away in Antwerp. The guy had Alzheimer's disease, and did not want to extend his suffering. He picked the moment of his death, checked into a hospital and asked for euthanasia. Simple as that!
- bamafun, on 03/20/2008, -0/+19very sad... thanks for sharing
- mphree, on 03/20/2008, -1/+20I'm absolutely staggered. My condolences to her family, friends, and most of all to her for enduring such a horrible disease.
Her face is just... terrible. I imagine that would have to be the worst part about it. I understand the sheer amount of pain she must have experience, but the amount of damage done to her face is just awful. Your face is your identity, it's who you are and watching that slowly being torn apart must have been horrible. - inactive, on 03/20/2008, -0/+19Rest In Peace.
- absurdist, on 03/20/2008, -1/+19I agree. Only I have rather stronger terms to put it in. May any of those, be they state, church, or whoever, who feel they have the right to decide whether an individual has the right to put an end to their own life, for whatever reason, be damned to a fate worse than this. This is the basic right to control one's life. Every other right stems from this.
- sirbeta, on 03/20/2008, -0/+18I knew it was going to happen, but it's still sad to ultimately hear. The poor woman suffered through so much; she can finally be at peace.
- yuutokun, on 03/20/2008, -1/+17Together with his sidekick, Sgt. Smart Ass!
- notoneofus, on 03/20/2008, -0/+14Don't worry. We'll take care of it.
- zboyet, on 03/20/2008, -2/+16If I ever get cancer that bad I am going to put a 12 gauge in my mouth. That is no life worth living.
- ursername180, on 03/20/2008, -0/+13Poor woman. :(
- zcreem, on 03/20/2008, -4/+17Sick *****!
I hope you don't end up suffering like this poor woman, - AxelDunor, on 03/20/2008, -2/+14Chantal Sebire tumor was extremely painful adn debilitating (affecting sinuses, limiting breathing, altering vision, ...)
Chantal wanted to die in her house, with her family, leagally and peacefully.
The French authorities didn't even give him this relief. After months of extenuating procedures, the French authorities said "no" to Chantal's request. No, despite years of horrrible suffering, you can't die as you wish, you will have to carry on this life of misery and suffering as a good christian sheeple.
If you want to die, you will have to die like a criminal, hidden, and guilty.
The French authorities confirmed their dryness, their coldness, their blind inhumanity. - shotgunefx, on 03/20/2008, -0/+12Same boat here. (Mom, Dad, and a Brother). When you hit a point where there is no treatment that can help, no quality, and no hope , then it's time to go.
- DarkoKun, on 03/20/2008, -0/+11R.I.P I can understand why she had to do it That is no way to go thru life.
- inactive, on 03/20/2008, -3/+14This is so sad... I guess this is what cancer looks like.
- dapob, on 03/20/2008, -1/+12First of all, my deepest respects for this brave woman who fought to the very end, not against her illness but for others, so that others like her could be given a choice. The debate is now reopen on this issue in France, and it is all thanks to her courage. I'd like to point out that the article can be misleading. She did not wanted to end her life because she was disfigured. Not only was she disfigured but she lost both the senses of smell and taste and became blind shortly after. She went to every treatment possible during *8 years* without any result. The worst is that she was suffering a tremendous amount a physical pain and, because of her particular illness, *could not* be medicated with morphine due to potentially dangerous side-effects. She was the mother of three children, aged 29, 27 and 13. My thoughts are with them. She begged for the right to die, with her children and friends all around her, in dignity. It seems she died alone last night. For those of you who can read french, here is her appeal to the Jurisdiction of Dijon: http://leblogdeladmd.hautetfort.com/media/02/02/87 ...
Farewell, Madame Sebire. I hope your gesture of love, as you called it, will give our politician the courage to take an unpopular decision on that matter. You deserve that much. - ThatEvilGuy, on 03/20/2008, -0/+11Rest In Peace.
- inactive, on 03/20/2008, -3/+14Some people just never had a chance for a complete life.
- jeffsback2223, on 03/20/2008, -2/+12The courts should have allowed her doctor to aid her death. She probably went in a lot of pain. My heart goes out to her and her family, I can only say I am glad she has passed on.
- mphree, on 03/20/2008, -9/+17Also, to the people who make fun about this kind of thing: I understand that the only way you can live your pathetic life is making humor out of others terrible misfortune, but shut the ***** up for now. Thank you.
- ThetaDot, on 03/20/2008, -1/+9This issue is not about getting legal permission to die. It's about getting legal permission to hire somebody to kill yourself.
It's not as if the politicians or lawyers in France didn't feel or sympathize with this woman -- it just opens up a large can of worms.
First, how do you document that a person wants to die? How would it be supervised? How could you tell that they were thinking clearly or rationally?
Second, if it was legal, many many people (who would normally be too afraid to take their own lives) would (perhaps on a whim) be tempted to do it. This could result in the deaths of many people who perhaps would still have had a chance at a better life.
Third, what do you do if the person has dependents? Children? Debt? Those parameters alone narrow the viable population to a very small number, so what's the point?
Just as this woman has done, anybody intelligent enough to end their own life will accomplish it.
At any rate, if it were legalized there'd have to be a mandatory delay (to give you time to think it over) and tons and tons of paperwork to get all your ***** in order. I bet most people wouldn't even want to bother with that and would end up doing it illegally anyway. - RevToTheRedline, on 03/20/2008, -0/+8You have a hard time with crude reality?
- FiP0, on 03/20/2008, -4/+12I've read almost every comment here, and there are like 2 comments telling jokes.
chill dude. - FlexiChick, on 03/20/2008, -0/+8Makes you appreciate your own health even more.
- kevincannon, on 03/20/2008, -0/+8She's been blind since last year.
- inactive, on 03/20/2008, -1/+8I slaute Chantal Sebire for having great patience, courage and fighting both a horrible disease and idiotic human policies.
She made us realize that the life we take for grated shouldn't be taken for granted and wishes of dying person should
always be fulfilled.
R.I.P - aussieNickuss, on 03/20/2008, -2/+9***** the politicians for not allowing the doctors to kill her.
- Hayaemsay, on 03/20/2008, -0/+7We should have the right ro prematurely end our own life if we please.
"You are now dead. Thank you for using Stop and Drop, America's favorite Suicide Booth since 2008.' - skamper, on 03/20/2008, -4/+11HOLY *****
- EricCiccone, on 03/20/2008, -2/+9And you know what's messed up about our media? After describing her plea to die with dignity, the article offers "View some photos of Chantel's distressing condition here"
Is that really necessary? - 2bees, on 03/20/2008, -0/+7A mom and two best friends here. Some how I think everyone either is related to or knows someone who has cancer or died from it. Toxic world we live in.
- zcreem, on 03/20/2008, -0/+6Do you even check the story before you spam it you *****.
- yingjai, on 03/20/2008, -3/+9Take your head out of your ass and go back to school. He said people should have a right to die, not kill. A right to die implies suicide and has nothing to do with "killing everyone they damn please."
ps. replied to wrong person again. - dinobot, on 03/20/2008, -0/+6@Jwoey
Actually, if you read the bible, there's this instance of this prophet called Elisha who asked God to punish these 40 youths cuz they made fun of his baldness, and God, being bored that day, he decided to help and sent the frickin bear cavalary to slaughter 'em... True story! Well, at least if you believe in the bible. - dinobot, on 03/20/2008, -0/+5C'mon, its childish to believe its only the French, just look at the US and many other countries where religion permeates most of the society and is used as a moral compass. The best you can expect in such countries is Orthothanasia, which is basically a 'DNR'. The problem is that, in spite of many doctors that would gladly help you end your suffering, they cant because their hands are tied by the law.
To make matters worse is that if your doctor can't help you, and you really wanna end it and commit suicide, your life insurance gets thrown out of the window... - cplusplus, on 03/20/2008, -1/+6I assume in the French system (like the USA), the courts don't make the laws but only interpret them. So its probably cowardly lawmakers to blame for not making this legal.
- Elohir, on 03/20/2008, -2/+7Not only do you unashamedly exploit a womans painful cancer struggle and eventual death as an excuse to advertise your partisan hate you do it in such a way as to exhibit your blatant ignorance of not only French but also American law. Congratulations on such a precise piece of honesty.
- spikeyone, on 03/20/2008, -5/+10Should she also thank god for ***** up her face like that?
- redrighthand, on 03/20/2008, -0/+4Unfortunate ad placement on the Daily Telegraph Page that is linked from this story http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q319/dklimke/?a ...
