No!
WTF is this yahoo answers? - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10hahaha...no....if hundreds of thousands protesting in american streets, and millions more protesting around the world can't stop it, then a few thousand nerds are not going to do much either.
- stevets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In order for this or anything else relating to politics to happen, people need to do a whole lot more than just clicking the digg button. Emails need to be written and phone calls need to be made. If they occurred in a high enough volume then there is a good chance that elected officials would respond. But simply digging an article or an idea into the 10-20k range isn't going to grab the attention of those who are in positions of power. Mostly because the digg community isn't comprised of your "everyday average joe's." I mean that in the best way possible, I like to think that we are more objective, and not as sheepish as the rest of the country when it comes to just about everything. Having said that, we do have an excellent opportunity here. One which could help steer the country in a different direction. It just requires a little more than a few clicks of a mouse button - something I'm not sure a lot of diggers would be willing to do. Prove me wrong fellas!!!!
- thatssmart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Simply put Islamic militantism does not need to be policed by American soldiers. Our dependence on foreign oil is the only reason to remain in the region. It may be time to rethink that as well. Enough needless killing in the name of a freedom they do not understand do not want.
- punkisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you underestimate the power of the "nerds" on Digg. The fact is that Digg users represent the core of the information economy, whose output is largely responsible for America's economic success (as well as its ability to finance imperialist adventures like the Iraq war). Congress might not understand "This whole computer thing", but their paychecks are largely coming to depend on it. We are much more politcally powerful than you think.
- p0tent1al, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amen to the guy who made the reference to Yahoo Answers.
I'm going to try to make this short as possible.
We already do Digg impeachement stories, etc. The real reality is that the world is full of a bunch of idiots, who give birth to kids who they make idiots. This is what people fail to understand. Even with 1,000,000 + users, it doesn't really mean ***** if the other billion in the country is
a. Too busy to even care
b. Still watching Fox News thinking that it is news(propaganda)
c. Going to vote depending on whose name they hear of the most
This is just one of those pointless questions. There are stupid ***** people in this country, and as a result we have a stupid ***** president at the head. You really need to take the time and look around you. Read political news stories on digg, get educated. you will then understand. - rnwen2750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unless that is your head in their sand, I don't really think you can tell the army what is and is not fighting for.
- hazygin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the problem is not about stopping the war, there is no war to fight. The problem is getting the people up there to see it beyond their own pride.
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"With the Digg mob standing up to the DCMA it made me think...If hundreds of thousands of people can see when something is wrong and stand up for our rights in regards to freedoms of speech when it comes to HD-DVD backup & archive why couldn ’t that same power of the people be harnessed to send a clear message to congress on the War in Iraq?"
OK...the Digg "mob" can do a lot to change stuff on Digg, but little for the US government. If we can rub our influence into google and yahoo and news organizations like BBC and NY Times, we might stand a chance of getting some attention, but flooding digg with what is essentially spam isn't the answer to the war in Iraq.
PS...i don't like the fact the we are called a mob, although obviously we behaved as such last night. It's got a negative connotation. - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All protests do is embolden the democratic congress. I credit the UFPJ protest i attended a few months ago for Pelosi's latest "will of the people" rhetoric. But nothing, but nothing, will ever change W. Bush's mind about Iraq. If the war ends before the 08 election, then Bush and the GOP own the failure. The only chance he has is to pass the buck to the next (democratic) president, and then when they fail, the GOP can win in '12 and put Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the rest of the neo-cons back in power.
- Authustian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1patients people, instead of bitching about whether or not we can, lets just try it.
it won't happen in a day, but maybe we CAN make a difference.
Seriously, send an email, make a call, just stop bitching back and forth about what could or could not be and GIVE IT A TRY!
If the people (not just the rich) can influence the politics, then we should. - WestonP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem is that Bush is the Commander in Chief, so he calls the shots, and he is bent on his war of terror. He has proven that he's not going to compromise, no matter what Congress, the American people, or the rest of the world says. Protest all you want... you'll be moved out of Bush's sight if you happen to do it anywhere near him, and it wouldn't matter anyway. He doesn't care what you or I think.
Congress isn't going to impeach him... talk of impeachment only comes up when someone is running for office. There was a lot of talk about it before the 2006 election, and then we stopped hearing anything about it. Now people are working on their 2008 presidential campaigns, so we're hearing about it again, but I don't see anything actually happening. - Sil369, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1" the GOP can win in '12 and put Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the rest of the neo-cons back in power."
They'll be wearing adult diapers by then. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"With the Digg mob standing up to the DCMA it made me think...If hundreds of thousands of people can see when something is wrong and stand up for our rights in regards to freedoms of speech when it comes to HD-DVD backup & archive why couldn ’t that same power of the people be harnessed to send a clear message to congress on the War in Iraq?"
Yes, lets keep posting story after story about stopping the war and bury every other story on digg. THAT will REALLY show the US government who's boss!
....or I could just bury this one...
The users here showed when they want something their way on digg, they will get it. In fact, Digg copied the US government when it came up with this whole "voting for our representatives thing." If you want things changed, vote next November. - 22magnum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
No, we cant. - Vandelay797, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ westonp
it hasn't happened yet. - thatssmart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3We have to try something. Accepting it as inevitable is unacceptable.
- Vandelay797, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We would need to get every media outlet on board with this one, this would need to pan across multiple systems. Digg would start the chain reaction.
(not unlike this chain reaction game: http://www.k2xl.com/games/boomshine/ ) for those of you who need a video game reference to understand this idea. - thatssmart, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Another thing that Digg is shear masses of people. I also suspect that intelligent people such as reddit and digg users are intelligent enough to "BURY" this pointless war.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Can the digg mob stop the War in Iraq?"
No.
Time to get over ourselves. - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Nice idea but Kevin Rose can't stop the war in Iraq. If only he could...
- thatssmart, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1These people will have it out no matter what you do, my goal is to take our soldiers out of the equation. It is not our responsibility to police the world otherwise we would be in Darfur. We all know why we are not there, there is no oil or resources to plunder.
- thatssmart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Thats why at the bottom of my webpage their is a link to find each person's representitive. Make your voices loud!!!
- WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2So, who WILL police militant Islam and protect the people of the world from beheading and bombings? Or do you figure that sticking your head in the sand is a better form of protection?
- WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Why do you want to stop the war in Iraq? Would you prefer to let the instability of the region continue to feed and reinforce Islamic militantism, spreading unrest throughout the world until no one is safe? That is the alternative to the war you know. Islam is in need of reformation much as Christianity was centuries ago. As long as it is rooted in a chaotic and violent region, it can not achieve that reform. In this modern age, that violence and fanaticism is a threat to every person in the world. It must be fixed and we need to accept that the cure will be costly and painful.
