- Salviati, on 11/04/2007, -14/+294I can't believe how outrageous this is. Police seem to think that tasers are harmless, and should be used as a first resort for anything. This guy wasn't being hostle, and they had only been trying to talk to him for 24 SECONDS! As an English-only traveler, I know how much information can be conveyed even without speaking, but these guys didn't even try. Sadly, what I thought was a US-phenomenon seems to have spread to Canada as well.
- AriaStar, on 11/04/2007, -52/+277Canada, Canada, please do NOT try to become like America. There's a reason I'm researching emigrating to you. Please don't imitate this god-forsaken country!
- Nudar, on 11/01/2007, -6/+213Let's not mention the fact they knew he had to be defenseless. No way he could have brought a weapon into a secure area. Tasers should only be used in instances where cops would otherwise be forced to shoot someone with a gun. Obviously this was not such a situation.
- guestaccount, on 11/04/2007, -12/+157Taze the police.
- Feep, on 10/30/2007, -4/+117Nie taze mnie, człowiek!
- pathrw, on 10/31/2007, -12/+119"Don't taze me, eh?" would have been the acceptable statement.
- johnhummel, on 10/29/2007, -0/+72Sadly, my own experience at airport authority and people who don't speak English doesn't go much better.
I was getting off of a flight in Chicago, when an elderly lady was getting off the plane and trying to explain to the flight attendants that she was looking for - something. The flight attendants didn't seem to care, and as I was the last one getting off the plane, it was "Hey, you, can you take her to baggage?"
I finally figured out she had a problem finding her family, so I let her borrow my cell phone and called the number she was carrying around on a Post-It. We found her family, she went on her way, and I was surprised that the flight attendants didn't try to call for some terminal help or something other than fostering her on Joe Random (who, for all they knew, I could have been an old lady killer or something).
Granted, this example is nothing near "tasing some guy after 24 seconds of talking to him and finding he didn't speak English", but it just shows that there are enough people in the airline business who just don't give a crap. - zanthius, on 10/31/2007, -4/+75So your going to a foreign country... there are a few phrases to remember. First:
"Dont speak English" and the second
"Dont taze me bro" - cranium, on 10/31/2007, -16/+80Cops are mindless thugs these days. They're not fit for the company of decent people.
- TheMidnight, on 10/31/2007, -7/+69Only in Americanada?
- popothebright, on 10/29/2007, -6/+66Repeat after me:
A taser is a deadly weapon.
A taser is a deadly weapon.
A taser is a deadly weapon.
Got it?
Again and again we hear surprise expressed with taser deaths.
Electrocution kills.
Since there's plenty of evidence to support this, the cops need to answer why they murdered a man with a deadly weapon. - Ajajadude, on 11/08/2007, -3/+63Well, people (believe it or not, more than just cops think this) seem to believe that tasers are pretty harmless because the manufacturers seem to be saying they are.
- UGM2099, on 10/31/2007, -2/+612007, Year of the Taser?
- thevelvetsun, on 10/29/2007, -4/+62The bystander who took the video needs to release it to the public. Put it on Google videos so this scandal won't just get covered up. Bad PR will cure almost any problem. This man should not die in vain, the police should be held responsible. Hiding the video is exactly what the police want.
- holygram, on 11/01/2007, -28/+83Tasers need to be banned, IMO.
- Monstradamus, on 10/29/2007, -3/+54they should seriously teach cops that tasers can be lethal in a lot of cases and should not be used as the "Shut up, its my turn to talk" tool
- TrevorBradley, on 10/28/2007, -3/+50Latest news here out of Vancouver is that the autopsy showed no alcohol or drugs in his system. Looking bad for airport security...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/29/2007, -8/+47Video of tasering: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/Page/docume ...
The article doesn't give the whole story.. he was throwing chairs and screaming at people and was apparently drunk.. - inactive, on 10/29/2007, -7/+44English, *****! DO YOU SPEAK IT?! *Zzzzap!*
- Velnich, on 10/29/2007, -4/+38This is really embarrassing.
- MalachiConstant, on 10/28/2007, -2/+36I'm so ashamed. I grew up in an extended family with many RCMP Officers. We'd debate certain topics like the legalization of marijuana and whatnot, but we never covered the issue of police brutality. I'm saddened by this because I just moved to Vancouver this summer away from Calgary. I didn't like being in Calgary because it was too much like the US in attitudes and police culture... but to have this happen HERE.
I thought this was Canada's ShangriLa... but alas it is not. They ***** tased someone to death at the airport I arrived here in. Woe. - terracottapai, on 10/29/2007, -1/+35Donde esta la biblioteca?
- vanscott, on 10/29/2007, -2/+35Factors that lead to his death.
1.24 hours non-stop travel from Poland
2.First flight ever plus a fear of flying (I heard his mom's lawyer on the radio on Friday)
3.He hadn't eaten in over 10 hours (he made it through customs and was told by his mother that she would meet him at the baggage carousel. However in Vancouver International the baggage carousel is only accessible to international passengers. He wandered around aimlessly for 10 hours oblivious to security and immigration assistance staff.
4. Didn't speak English
Understandably this guy was going to flip out and sure enough he did by entering a secure room and throwing chairs and a computer. Cops were called, and tasered him. Unfortunately he died.
Did he deserve this? Of course no.
Did the cops try to kill him? Of course no.
Was he to blame for the tasering. A debatable yes.
This was just a terribly unfortunate incident. The cops do need to chill out with the tasers though.
BTW, not sure if this was said, but this is a very trolly headline. - MadEnvoy, on 10/29/2007, -3/+35They won't.
- redxii, on 10/29/2007, -1/+31There's an interpreter in Redmond who speaks Throwchairanese.
- romistrub, on 10/28/2007, -3/+31Czynić nie elektryczność mi brat!

- holygram, on 11/01/2007, -2/+29I want a shirt with that on it...spelled properly, though.
- KPPRICE, on 10/31/2007, -10/+37One incident does not speak for a nation... calm yourself.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -0/+25The last time I was returning home via Vancouver Airport I pointed out to the customs officer that there was an unattended bag sitting not far from us. He told me not to worry about it... I should have said it was an unattended Polish guy.
- anand78, on 10/28/2007, -1/+25How would you feel if someone killed your loved ones say in China. Because you don't know how to speak chinese. You need a serious psychiatric evaluation.
- Mononuclear, on 10/28/2007, -1/+23Hmm so if I want to take a vacation and visit france, germany, italy. I have to learn french german and italian before I can go?
- romistrub, on 10/28/2007, -2/+23We really only say "eh" to turn a statement into a question. Example: "s'cold out, eh?" Or "that dude *****' sucks, eh?"
- Aythun, on 11/01/2007, -0/+21No, it doesn't. Your entire point was based around the time frame.
- Bodhinature, on 10/28/2007, -6/+27You got dugg down, but, dude, you are right. Tasers really lower the bar for policemen, not only in learning how to negotiate and deescalate a situation, but also in hand combat. Tasers are meant to be a last resort, not a first resort.
- Nerys, on 11/01/2007, -1/+21LESS tazer training and more Constitutional Training (for US police) and a mandatory read of 1984 and an understanding that its a BAD result.
- vitcvitc, on 10/29/2007, -4/+24Ah...actually he was not drunk and not on drugs...customs ignored him for 5+ hours and all he wanted was some help...
THe cops need to be charged with man slaughter...
http://www.cknw.com/news/news_local.cfm?cat=742821 ... - zanthius, on 10/28/2007, -1/+21ENGLISH... SPEAK ENGLISH... must be a Terrorist.... ZZZZzzzzzzzzat
- funkytommyman, on 10/28/2007, -1/+21and by "communicate like the rest of us" you mean by spelling "you're" wrong?
- directive0, on 10/28/2007, -3/+22*points and laughs*
- Ramble, on 10/28/2007, -0/+18It's not a misspelling, it's a grammar error, one so basic you should not be saying it at all.
- Elderon, on 10/28/2007, -2/+20Cops seems to think that tazers are to be used during any sort of disobedience when correct me if I'm wrong, it is at least my opinion that they are only to be used where a gun would otherwise be necessary and can be used safely. This new trend that cops tazer anyone that gets uppitty is complete *****. Cops need to learn self defense. Someone takes a swing at you, sure go ahead and punch back or pull out your clubs, but tazer? NO NO. if he has a weapon like a knife sure but a unarmed person? never unless the cops life is in obvious jeapordy
- edenseager, on 10/30/2007, -8/+26An old relative once told me... 'speak english or die'
- diggduggjoe, on 10/29/2007, -0/+18Tasers are used too frequently without understanding that they may be lethal. It seems cops take a quick tase in training and figure repeated jolts are just as harmless. They are not. I have never had the pleasure of taking multiple hits from a taser from an eager law enforcement officer. However, I have taken a nasty hit working in a factory when some bonehead wired an outlet with the ground as HOT!
I found myself touching two adjacent pieces of equipment and had 120VAC across my chest.. My heart pounded for quite awhile and I am sure some people would have had more severe reactions to that event. I was lucky, I fell back away from the equipment. Electrical shocks are not 100% predictable. Tasers must be considered lethal force, even if only a few will die. - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+18Well it was a taser, not an intentional kill. When there is a public threat, and yet thowing chairs and suitcases is a threat, the officer must restrain the suspect, however, their training tells them to use tasers thinking they are safe but they are not.
This should be used to support changing basic police training to avoid deaths by tasers. - wilf_brim, on 10/28/2007, -2/+18I was wondering how you say "Don't tase me, bro!" in Polish. Now I know.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/28/2007, -0/+16Hey, if they have real weapons, they are at least forced to think twice about using them in a situation like this.
- clothmonkey, on 10/29/2007, -0/+15How I wish you were wrong.
- DeviantDragon, on 10/28/2007, -1/+16Are you serious? Is this guy serious? Cause it's sounds like he would permit the killing of legal visitors to a country due to miscommunication. He's gotta be kidding...right?
