- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+79It's high time the populace started exercising some public oversight of police.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+55"Why is it that no one ever gives the cops the benefit of the doubt in these situations?"
Because we can see what actually happened; Because abuse of power needs no explanation; Because we've all experience police crossing the line, if only just a little bit. - kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+51"Yeah, but see that's just it... Nobody ever releases footage of a cop doing their job by the books, unless something blows up, or bullets were dodge. Then it makes the primetime TV shows years later only when Baseball games are delayed."
Why would I ever video cam someone for doing his/her job.
No one earns the right to beat up people or abuse powers. - scuzzman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38@zombo
Absolutely right! The police are in the right here! Toe the line and shut the ***** up, stupid civilian! Rights my ass, you just do what I tell you, and we'll get along just fine.
/sarcasm
***** you. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35>>>"Nobody ever releases footage of a cop doing their job by the books"
This makes no sense. Just because they don't show normal situations doesn't make the abnormal ones "okay" in some fashion.
The problem is that there is no punishment for these cases. The officers who beat up the suspect or taser the kid in the library or shoot the peaceful protester, they get no reprimands. They get no punishments. Hell, sometimes they are rewarded. No, it's not all officers doing this sort of thing, but the system often rewards what should be considered criminal behavior.
When a cop ***** it up, there should be consquences. Police should be held to a higher standard. At the very least they should no longer be a cop. In many cases, they should go to jail. They shouldn't get a ***** medal for tasering citizens. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28"Nobody ever releases footage of a cop doing their job by the books"
I suppose jaymoon has never seen a television show called COPS.
I really hate it when people use their lack of knowledge as evidence that something doesn't exist. e.g. jaymoon can't think of any videos where police are doing their job normally, so its proof, stone cold evidence, that 'Nobody ever releases footage of a cop doing their job by the books.' - korehyun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Well for number one in this instance where there were 3-4 cops from the video they had no reason to taze the kid. The kid was not a threat to the security. And not only did they taze hime once they did it repeatedly.
- DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24@Muyoso:
I watched the campus library one yesterday. Actually, I only got 1/3 of the way through it because I had to leave, but what I saw was brutal. There is no way in Hell they had to taser him multiple times just to get cuffs on him, and all while a crowd was watching!
In this situation, it was simply illegal to use that much force, I think. That's why we can't just give them the benefit of the doubt -- they break laws sometimes and need to be punished. - kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21"Yeah, but see that's just it... Nobody ever releases footage of a cop doing their job by the books, unless something blows up, or bullets were dodge."
The footage is available (COPS, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, etc). It's just that nobody cares.
It's exactly the same as politicians. CSPAN broadcasts all day and all night, and nobody cares. But have one story with "senator" and "sex" in the same headline, and media attention a-splodes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18it's hightime the training methods for police are examined and that officers and their superiors be held accountable for following or not following said training, with public oversight.
- Razster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Our Local Redding California PD - Taking kids off a Skate Park.
We had a band playing and the City of Redding gave us all the permits and allowed us use of the electric at the skate park - but RPD came in and said no and started walking people away, well some skaters we're still wanting to skate and watch the show - but the RPD told them to move it or go to jail
http://www.youtube.com/v/viHU3igaUfI < See for yourself. It is not just Big cities that have police issues.
Redding California Cops are known for shooting first and asking questions later (8 so far in a pop. of 70,000) - GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Whatever, another army of davids.
Camera phones aren't just being used to capture misconduct by police. They're being used to capture criminal conduct perpetrated by all sorts of people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Hi,
my handle is mroffroad and Im trailer trash.
Nascar is cool.
I have an inferiority complex that makes me feel 1 inch tall.
Cops are cool.
I shave my head so I can look like a cop...and a neonazi. - scispaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Video tapes of police "brutality" sometimes can prove the opposite. A few years back some teenager was trying to get an LAPD police officer fired because the police officer slammed him against the hood of a car in a gas station while arresting him.
The videotape of this "brutality" showed that when the kid had his hands behind him to get cuffed, he reach back, grab the cops package, squeezed and twisted. Needless to say the cop was acquitted and the kid got hit with assaulting an officer. - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14dude, everfalling your clock math sucks. 8:45+5:35 = 2:20
- cprincipe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"The government should be afraid of the people, not the other way around."
- NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Lets try a class exercise shall we children?
Ok zombo. In this exercise i'm the police. I'm going to decide on the spot I dont want you to ever post on the internet again. I want you off digg and if you come back i'll tazer you till you cant have children. Dont like it? Too bad. Unfair? Too bad. I'm a police officer and you have no say in the matter. If you complain to my superiors they'll just give me a slap on the wrist and send me on my way because you're just a lowly civilian. - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14While LAPD has no excuse for the actions taken, the incident with Campus Security is another story. Many of these Security Firms barely run any semblance of a training program, maybe a few safety courses, slap a stun gun a can of pepper spray and a fake badge on any Joe Schmo, pay him 12 bucks an hour, good to go. Someone needs to take a look at some of these "Private Security" firms methods of recruitment and training, and do some severe reevaluation.
- andrewpate, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15So Glad i'm a white male, from midwestern america. I'm never harassed by anybody, except those damn jesus freak kids.
- Ascus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What country does not allow the video tapping of cops? Its completely legal in US unless the tell you to stop, even then its questionable.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8in all of these instances, reguardless of whether or not the people were actually breaking the law, violence was not necessery. These police should be punished for their lack of contraint. Good police know better to let anger drive the way they treat those they're dealing with. I dont see how there was any need to bash the guy on the sidewalk in the head when they had him pinned down, and i dont see the need to taser the man in the library when he said he was going, and after being repeatedly tased he was still expected to walk out on his own strength.

- ocsurfreport, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Did anyone here notice how they changed the story at UCLA?
"A third grainy video has campus police using a Taser stun gun on a student who refused to leave a Los Angeles university library."
!!!!!!!! “who refused to leave” !!!!!!!!!!
He was in his way out.
WTF???? - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Just get a "Redding Cops do a Killer Job" bumber sticker to show your support.

- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10yeah, brain fart. off by two hours. heh. i think it's cause i saw the number '14:00' in my head and thought 4 o'clock and not 2, and then i just subtracted an hour to make up for the minutes...
- aragon127, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here's my favorite comment:
"I cannot make judgments based solely on videos or portions of videos," Bratton said this week.
Here's the translation for those who don't speak PUBLICSPEAK:
"Just because I've watched exactly what happened and heard numerous bystands explain it to me doesn't mean I've had time to come up with an explanation to justify what is clearly the egregarious action of my officers" - GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9haha. Check the connections on these "private security firms". They're well known within political circles as another outlet of political corruption. A lot of these firms have deep political connections with either the police units themselves or elected officials.
The people they hire are people that are footsoldiers for politicians and their door to door action teams. They're not security officers of any kind. They're political appointees. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just wait, cellphones, and the cameras in them, will be declared as deadly weapons.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So where are the videos?
- korehyun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The abuse of power by crooked cops will never end until there is a real change. These people need to be held accountable for what they do. None of this paid leave of absence bull *****. They not only need to be fired, but they need to be charged with a crime. Hopefully after a few of these bastards spend some time behind bars the rest of them might think second about abusing there powers.
- SundayTrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Where is the reference to "Private Security" in these incidents? There is a difference between "Private Security" and campus police. Campus police go through the same training that city or county commissioned officers do.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They have already made claims that camera phones inhibit police from doing their job... I hate the police.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you like watching people suffer then it can be arranged to force you to helplessly watch your family suffer in front of you while you are bound and gagged.
This is not a movie, this is real life. No one is to say that you will not be the next victim of police brutality.
...plus as namelessuno mentioned you are trash so you probably drink heavily and beat your wife. Who knows they may just pull you over for speeding, rip you out of your car and beat you senseless for no reason and claim "mistaken identity". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The cops could have gotten away with tasering the kid once, if they in fact were putting him under arrest. After that they should have cuffed him and then picked him up and carried/dragged him to the cruiser. Standing over him and repeatedly tasering him is an abuse of power; I don't care how obnoxious this kid was.

It's high time you cross the street without looking and get hit by a bus. - everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4redding... i donno how anyone lives there. it's a hell hole in the summer i swear.
- gimpbully, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@NinjaBoy
If your profile is correct and you live in MO, the cops have absolutely no right to confiscate a camera that's shooting an event in public. Check with your local lawyer - truspark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5abusive LA Cops and OJ back in the news, house prices falling - feels like the early nineties all over again.
- Sabot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Who would have thought there would be a good use for camera phones other than taking pictures of hot chicks at clubs.
- gimpbully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe the difference is you went to a private institution, whereas UCLA is public. I went to both, private had the rent-a-cops and the public actually had state cops.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The government is your friend.
OBEY the government.
Do not resist government agents.
Get a job and work.
Breed.
Report bad neighbors to the government.
Watch more TV.
Consume more products.
Do not create a stir.
Follow the rules....all of them.
Obey an do not resist.
A public service announcement to help you be a happy peasant. - meznak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Leirsgrios
While he wasn't complying with the officers, the Tazer is not the proper tool for the job. There were four officers present who could easily have subdued the student. The Tazer is designed and intended to be used as a "less lethal" self-defense device. If the student was threatening the officers with bodily harm or a non-projectile weapon, he would have deserved a shot with the Tazer. He was not; he was simply disobeying the officers' commands. He should have been cuffed and walked/carried out of the building. There was no reason to use the Tazer once, nevermind five times. Blatant abuse of power. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5He's right. If we don't do whatever it takes to make the pigs respect the people they work for, we have earned the jackboot on our necks.
- Razster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@everfalling
What? Dislike the 120+ degree summers there? Beats Death Valley ;)

Yes'um, and they didn't even give a !@#$. So now the City is reviewing this. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5someone started a little early....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you did your part and they still made arrests then keep on it. In the very least make them give a public apology.
