- daze144, on 07/09/2009, -1/+39California has the highest population... How about the most robberies per capita....
- AriShmari, on 07/08/2009, -3/+26I'm more surprised that California has money to steal. Do the robbers get bags full of IOUs?
- bixby1, on 07/07/2009, -1/+22Just switched to direct deposit, thanks!
- Murrabbit, on 07/09/2009, -1/+16Hmm at the same time California contains 10% of the nation's population.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+13That's it? I was certain more banks have been robbing people for years.
- Dingoboy, on 07/08/2009, -1/+12I would like to see this broken down by per capita or by square mile.
- SenatorPenguin, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8Check the linked FBI study from the article: http://www.fbi.gov/publications/bcs/bcs2008/bank_c ...
Only $9 million of the stolen $62 million was recovered. Only in 19% of robberies was any amount of loot recovered. - ashes0, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8Leading Teen pregnancy in the 50 states

Congratulations California, Most progressive state in the union. - Askee, on 07/08/2009, -2/+9Me to, especially considering CA has the largest population out of all the states.
- dankoleary, on 07/09/2009, -0/+6My wife works at a bank in CA, and she was robbed last month using a note. The dude had never committed a crime before, was mid 50's and down and out. Some of this has to do with the economy and how bad things are in CA. Sad that a jail cell looks like a better option for some people.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6So... out of curiosity, just curiosity and no other reasons, which state has the worst robbery to capture ratio?
- varun1s, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6Still the Wild Wild West?
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6Because LA Helicopter Crews give the best coverage. They just wait for that stuff.
- Dream0Weaver, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Because the solution is always over-taxation!
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4California: The Shining Light of Gun Control
- Pinkertinkle, on 07/09/2009, -1/+5Does China then also have the most bank robberies of any country in the world?
- Codename46, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3I guess you'll have to use ad hominem since your ability to form a coherent argument is lacking.
- Hedison, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4Probably the same f..l tried 65 times
- Fistocrange, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Wow, that's terrific! I Think we got you beat in wildfires and serial murders as well. Take that Texas!
Sincerely,
California
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3@I would love to see some stats on the /success/ of bank robbers.
What do you mean?
Robbing a bank is very easy. Just hand the teller a note and he/she will give you all the money in the drawer.
There are so many robberies in LA that FBI cases are backlogged so the likelihood of getting caught is very slim unless you do it multiple times. - bduddy, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3BREAKING: Largest State Leads Nation in Leading Discrete Statistics
- TheShero, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Here's why:
http://graphjam.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/song-c ... - Kythas, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2It's actually the opposite. The means and ability to defend myself make me MORE of a man than cowering in a corner while I wait for the police to protect me.
I refuse to abrogate the protection of my life and limb to the State. - sapped, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2@twoblink
I don't think the numbers back up what you are saying.
Look at the actual numbers from the FBI website;
http://www.fbi.gov/publications/bcs/bcs2008/bank_c ...
Arizona had 236 robberies and Tennessee had 90.
Population Arizona 6.5m
Population Tennessee 6.2m
( Population numbers http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=uspopulation&a ... ) - pagemaster, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3Articles like this always seem biased. More important is what is the number of robberies per bank in each state it might give a better insight as to which states are the worst. California is pretty big afterall.
- rockon4life45, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2percentages please, california has the highest population and is also huge.
- nepidae, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2buried for not knowing what per capita means
- MidnightRIder77, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Leaving a note, really? You're robbing a bank for christ's sake at least attempt to seem badass. You're already facing a long prison sentence, at least make it fun. If I was going to rob a bank I'd at least buy a gun and play it out Hollywood style.
- N01SE, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9rOCGRlCo4&fea ...
- funk49, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2I've heard that in LA, they don't report on it because the success rate is so ridiculously high.
- mikesoba, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Then where would be the sensationalism?
Largest population in the nation - so everything is "more" from foreclosures to bank robberies. - lesliewong, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Because that's where the money is.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Did anybody think "Point Break" after reading the title?
Little hand says it's time to rock and roll! - LordByr0n, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1People go to jail for smoking pot. Quite the risk but I still smoke it. And i gain nothing material out of it.
- kolobcreek, on 07/09/2009, -2/+3not surprising when they're #1 in population too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_b ...
Does anyone get away with bank robberies anymore? You'd figure people would learn by now there are better places to rob. I would love to see some stats on the success of bank robbers. - zerohelix, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1go california! woot!
- LordByr0n, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1So I suppose gun control and criminal activity are exclusive?
- RiotHeart, on 07/09/2009, -3/+4I can hit any bank I want, any time. They got to be at every bank, all the time. That's why we're on top of the world.
- InfiniteNothing, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1per bank?
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1That's all the people trying to re-live the movies "Heat" and "Point Break"
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Well, if a guy is robbing a bank while I'm in it, I would rather his weapon can only inflict paper cuts and not gunshot wounds.
NRA's solution would have everyone in the room firing at him over my shoulder and between my legs in an effort to down the dangerous criminal with a piece of paper in his hand. - JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Legal or actual population? There is a 10% difference between the two figures.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1They could get the bag of rejected IOUs that the banks did not accept.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1That's BS. Armed security guards who are actually trained in using firearms have not stopped armed robbery from occurring. So what makes you think armed tellers will?
Criminals in shootouts miss their targets all the time. A Latino gang in LA recently shot a baby to death with a stray bullet while they were shaking down a street vendor for protection money.
Even cops shoot themselves or shoot an coworker or neighbor while cleaning their guns. I think cops & security guards are the ultimate civilian pros other than professional competitive marksmen.
So if cops, gangsters, and security guards can't avoid missing their target and hitting bystanders instead then you can be darned sure they are not going to scare away all the armed criminals. All it will do is make it clear to a robber that he better bring something more substantial with him than a piece of paper when he comes to robe the place.
What it will do is keep away the customers who have no desire to be near a bank where tellers are shooting at people inside, let alone caught in a crossfire between a bank teller and a crook with a gun. Or just shot by a teller while cleaning his gun. - JohnnySoftware, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Roughly same number of people in Arizona an Tennessee but you probably have more fugitives and gangsters living in Arizona than Tennessee.
That could change though. There has been a mass migration of gangsters from cities to surrounding suburbs in recent decades. The cities are pretty tapped out in terms of victims, really.
That or they are living behind heavy security. Think wrought iron gates and so forth. - agvance, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Either way around it still works. If TX banned food the people of TX would still eat they would just be breaking the law to do it. Just like robbers still rob with guns even though they are illegal. You can not legalize\penalize something out of existence which is why the gun/drug debate is so dumb. You cannot prevent two parties, who both have something each other wants, from doing business. To think otherwise is just stupid.
- imns, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Give me two Utah, two ...
- Antimatt, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Bank robbing averages $10k a pull? That seems like a lot of risk for not a lot of money.
