We refuse to allow drilling for oil in Alaska. - There is less than 9 months of oil in AK, so its not a factor. Plus we will drill for it soon.
We refuse to allow new refineries to be built. - Not true, oil companies have not requested to build one since the 70s & they are shutting ones down!
We refuse to allow new nuclear plants to be built. - Not true, in fact we are about to build quite a few of them.
We refuse to allow drilling for oil in the gulf. - Total BS, we drill in the Gulf right now dumbass!
We refuse to allow drilling for natural gas in Alaska. - Again, not enough gas to be a factor, plus we will drill for it soon.
All of these are lies made up by PR firms that work for oil companies. Stop watching Faux News. - ChristPissed, on 10/25/2007, -10/+41Suffer the little children, to feed the glory of their Führer.
Dein Führer scheißt auf dich. - inactive, on 10/29/2007, -5/+35Oh & lets not forget the two oilmen in the White House who have literally colluded with the oil companies & won't tell us about their meetings with them to talk about our US energy strategy.
Also, nothing has changed on the supply side or refinement side since 2000, so oil market experts say that it should still be at $30 a gallon.
But then there is the weak dollar that has been devalued during the Bush economy which jacks up the oil prices about 30%.
This is your Republican administration at work! - bruinexmo, on 10/25/2007, -4/+24George Bush does not care about black people, white people, poor people, Iraqi people...
- TecHeavy, on 10/29/2007, -13/+31Please People WAKE UP!!!!!!!!
- sensoukami, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12Hmmm..l....can't help but notice that the current Administration hasn't done all that much for 'stability' in the Middle East. Perhaps you failed to notice?
As to 'what would happen'..well, study Economics (remember Economics? It's the basis for most of the ideas that underly free-market capitalism). People would find ways to:
a) Consume less oil
b) find substitutes for oil and/or
c) find alternative sources of oil.
And did it ever occur to you that if the US government invested 1/10th of what they are spending on wars into finding alternative energy there would be no need to worry about the Middle East one way or the other. Just a thought.... - brianbb98, on 10/25/2007, -2/+11I tell you... if gas ever goes back down to $.99 a gallon im gonna buy tons of it just to burn in celebration.
yeah yeah.. digg me down for being part of the problem. - kushed, on 10/25/2007, -1/+9I wonder how much of that money will go "missing"?
- throop77, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Spending $650,000,000,000.00 to stabilize oil prices can't possibly be spending money wisely. We could put solar panels on every house in America for that... or build enough nuclear plants to power every house in America. Wait... maybe this administration isn't doing any FOR America.
- cranium, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6There is no winning, there are only degrees of losing.
- art42, on 10/25/2007, -6/+12http://www.wtrg.com/oil_graphs/oilprice1947.gif
- crossgrain, on 10/25/2007, -2/+8Of course, then Cheney would be president.
I think it's best we stick with the idiot sock puppet, lest the evil puppet master takes complete control... - sibhod, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6What fantasy world do you live in that $41k/year for a family of four is high-income or even middle-income? I spend that much on bills and food a year as a single person. For a family of four at this level, health insurance would cost a quarter of their yearly income!
This $35 billion dollar bill was vetoed, while a $534 billion dollar bill for prescription drugs, that makes absolutely no checks for income level, was very quickly signed by Bush last year. The difference is the $534 billion bill was co-written by the pharmaceutical and insurance lobbyists and made special care that big pharma can line it's pockets. The children's health care bill made no such provisions, and was vetoed.
This is not spin. Bush has made very clear that he wants government money to go to private businesses. - krawkula, on 10/27/2007, -3/+9Bush was quoted saying:
"I dont understand why people wont just buy a heater, heh heh" - dinh, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7At first when the war started, I thought it was going to last a year or 2. But now, why the hell are we over there?
Please, don't say constructing a new government. I haven't seen ***** accomplished over there but hundreds of people dying for nothing. - sensoukami, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Your point #1 has validity, but point #2 falls apart. I'd say it's in the long term interest of the US to find ways to not need oil anymore, which has got to be cheaper than spending countless billions of dollars, killing thousands and thousands of people (your own and others), and propping up dictatorships. If the military and diplomatic policies of the US in the Middle East are being driven by economic considerations, then I'd have to say you'r not getting good value for money....
- jorgepblank, on 10/25/2007, -8/+13The problem with these 'WAKE UP PEOPLE/WHY ISN'T ANYONE DOING ANYTHING' is because you only say these things on Digg; people who go on the internet for their news, they are able to make decisions on what they believe most of the time. The general population get their information from TV and word-of-mouth which often times gets changed as it passes.
I'm not against you or anything, just trying to state a fact. All of these awareness drives many people have here are simply ineffective, because most of the people that see them are already aware. You guys have to start thinking up of different ways to reach the general population. - whatthefu, on 10/25/2007, -10/+15YEAH GUYS WAKE UP as those telling you to "wake up" are doing nothing but posting on the internet hoping someone else will do something while they sit around, complain and mock people who disagree with them, compare those of other ideologies to Nazis, and hope "someone else" will fix the country's problems. You are not helping ANYTHING. This is Digg. Get the ***** off your ass if you want change. You don't really want change; you're not doing ***** to achieve it.
- aliengoods, on 10/27/2007, -1/+5How are they out of wack from a conservative perspective?! I spent a minute looking for a sarcasm tag.
The conservative perspective is, or at least was, smaller government. This would lead to less taxes as less services are provided. Under Bush, the government has gotten incredibly large, and not just because of the war. His corporate tax breaks have done nothing to stimulate the economy, and the no-bid contracts that are being provided to companies in Iraq can only be classified as corporate welfare. And that's not including the other forms of corporate welfare being doled out domestically.
And no, I don't want a more socialist state, but I definitely want a more liberal one. Here's the definition:
Liberalism: a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal.
This used to be what conservatives wanted as well. - thejokker, on 10/25/2007, -5/+9Two points
1) Why is it the governments job to help people pay for their heating bills. Is it a shame that people dont always make enough to cover their expenses? yes. But that doesnt mean the government should be there with a handful of cash.
2) Doesnt stabilizing the middle east help reduce the volatility of oil prices. Put aside your personal views on whether not the policy is working, if the president's staff believes that the military action there will create a more stable region then isint that money doing a better job reducing the energy cost for everyone? - Bdog2g2, on 10/27/2007, -5/+9Well go ahead burn the oil, burn the coal, don't subsidize green energy like you do oil and after you're done frying in the global warming, those few thousand people will become a few million people in the global cooling caused by the dilution of the oceans salinity and shutting down the Conveyor.
And its not a black and white issue, like you're making out to be. Its not a polar bear vs people. The environment (you know that thing you live in) is more connected than the neurons in your head so...what happens over there affects us here. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/25/2007, -2/+6Buried for the ***** submitter. It's removing energy assistance, NOT cutting people off and ensuring that 30 million people can't heat their homes. Hell, I lived in low income housing for a bit in college, and the energy assistance didn't pay for a great deal of the bill. I got maybe $30 a month in assistance. Can we have some accuracy in titles/descriptions instead of this sensationalistic *****? Is that asking too much?
And really, how many Rawstory links hit the main page every day? Let's get some variety. - stephenodotcom, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5You guys sure do take care of your own. Like that 10% (more then the entire size of Canada!) of you population that is living in poverty and can't even afford to provide heat so to avoid a painful death. Wow. How about we just take the soon to be 60% of the population baby boomers and shoot them all. They are going to be receiving assistance. It's just all your moms and dads and what not. If you can pull the trigger on complete random strangers I'm sure you can pull the trigger on the people who gave life to you.
I'm just outright upset and shocked at the typical digg perspective. You advocate legalized marijuana and healthcare but because obviously most of you arn't poor due to the fact your logged onto the internet and using a expensive computer ***** them all. - inactive, on 10/25/2007, -5/+9Actually it is the case that oil companies are using enviro groups to ensure that no new refineries can be built. It's how they artificially limit supply.
- Wargalas, on 10/27/2007, -3/+7Well that's all nice and dandy, but the guy does make a valid point. We can use the resources we have here, but environmental groups complain all the time. Without those resources, our energy dollars will be going towards terrorist states and other nations.
- sibhod, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4This isn't about bailing people out. Anyone who thinks that needs to actually take a look at low income families in America. These are people who work multiple jobs and still can't make ends meet. Minimum wage has failed to increase anywhere near the pace of inflation. Being poor in this country is a vicious cycle because those with the money make the rules, and they don't give two ***** about the poor.
You don't think it's the government's job to help people? Should the poor people who can't afford health care and heat in their home just died sick and cold? There is more than enough to go around, but people are greedy, selfish, and demonize the poor as lazy. There is very little upward mobility in our society, and it's getting even worse. The people who say the government shouldn't help the unfortunate just sicken me. - Wargalas, on 10/25/2007, -6/+10Dugg up. If you're going to make a statement, be prepared to back it up with sources and facts.
- barandon0D9, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3We're winning the war now? How and when did this start happening?
- siszam, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Chavez takes care of h is country first. That's why Bush and his worshipers hate him so much. Chavez even offered help for America's poor but Bush said no.
- art42, on 10/25/2007, -4/+7google. Old news.
- barandon0D9, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3"Hes taking care of the young men and women who are FIGHTING THIS WAR FOR US"
Right, he cares for them by.... sending them to war. How about YOU do the math, Bush said the entire Iraq war would cost 50 billion dollars, and that would be mostly paid for by Iraqi oil revenues. oops. Guess he was wrong. Bush even opposed raising benefits for troops and their families. He cares indeed. - quickslvr1287, on 10/25/2007, -5/+8I don't think it's the governments job to bail people out all the time, but then again I don't think we need to be spending $190 billion more on this war.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -4/+7And just what the ***** are YOU doing?
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/25/2007, -2/+5Mmm, curmudgeon-y.
- ZenMojo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3I wonder if Hugo Chavez is still offering that free heating oil....
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+330 mil peeps w/out heat? *****. My gas co. collects donations for po folk, and won't shut off the gas til spring. I suspect a lot of others do that.
- Ajajadude, on 10/25/2007, -3/+6ANWR oil is a drop in the bucket compared to what we use. It would take years for that oil to even hit the market, and the companies would rather sell it on the global market rather than just use it domestically.
Oil companies will only use the cost of building new refineries as an excuse to raise prices in the U.S. (don't tell me they wouldn't, they'll do anything for a few extra pennies on the gallon).
There's a new nuclear plant that's been ok'd. But, people don't want anything "nuclear" anywhere near them, so where are they going to build them? Your backyard?
The problem with pumping for oil in the Gulf is that little thing called hurricane season. The prices skyrocket the moment a hurricane is forecasted to go anywhere near the Gulf. That and no one wants to see that out on the horizon when they're walking on the beaches. It does wonders for the tourist industry.
- sensoukami, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4You're comment would have more credibility except for the little fact that your probably the type of guy who thinks that Rush Limbaugh speaks the 'truth' or that Fox news is 'fair and unbiased'....Maybe he just doesn't agree with the Presiden't priorities. Not everyone is a puppet to one side or the other you know...
- pseudononymist, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3at least he treats everyone equally...
- pseudononymist, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3We're not killing people, they're all animals over there, so if anyone should be incensed, it should only be PETA.
/sarcasm - obelisky, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4you do not live in reality.
- pseudononymist, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Come on diggers, if you really care about your poor fellow citizens, and if you really believe in what Ron Paul is campaigning on, get your butt in gear to make up for our pathetic government's failures. Don't complain that Bush is an
idiot who doesn't care, everyone already knows that. Show those idiots that we can do it better. Just like Ron Paul's 5+ million dollars raised, thousands of people giving small amounts of timer or money can make a huge difference. We can't rely on the federal government anymore, we've already seen what a big mistake that is. Get active in your state and local governments, who will better understand the needs of your community. Give to charities, or start one of your own with Paypal or something. Sell crap you don't need on ebay and donate the money. Or just donate those old clothes you've grown out of or just don't wear anymore. Hell, buy something new and donate it. Christmas is coming, the season to be giving right?
Relying on the federal government to solve our nation's problems is comfortable because it cures us of our guilt by making it seem as if we're doing something but in fact little if anything is done. Besides makes the lives of others better, you'll make yourself feel better in the process. - pseudononymist, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Sometimes kids they the darndest things, but usually they say a lot really stupid *****.
- barandon0D9, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2...sigh.
- pseudononymist, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2the pipe would stabilize everything
- shoop008, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3Where does it say he used money for Iraq instead of using money for heat. All it says is he vetoed a bill adding $500 million to what we already spend to help heat poor people's homes. Is Cafferty asserting that it would only take $500 million to heat 30 million homes for the entire winter. This is absurd. He's saying it only takes $17 to heat a home for an entire winter. Lets not forget that it is illegal in most states for the gas company to turn off your gas during the winter, or the fact that most natural gas companies are run by the local municipality. I love it when CNN and FOX let opinion shows spout off complete falsities like they are news.
- Warhammer, on 10/25/2007, -3/+5It is all Bush's plan. It is genius. You freeze the poor so they WANT to go to a warm climate. HEY! How about an 8-month vacation in Sunny Iraq? Plus we'll throw in room and board (the armor you'll have to find on your own).
- xkilleddestinyx, on 10/25/2007, -2/+4wow if Bush were a true leader he'd take care of America first
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -2/+4How many of those people have cars, dvd players, tvs, stereos. And drink booze smoke ect.
/30mil? ***** - sensoukami, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2"we are winning the war" is no problem for me, as I supported it in the beginning (before I realized how utterly incompetent and dishonest the Republican party had become), but I would question where you get the idea you are "winning"...
