- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Well there's the problem right there. Bin Laden doesn't have a license plate to read. And he lives in a cave where satelites can't read license plates. If he'd come outside for a bit and hold a license plate up to the sky for a few hours, then we could find him.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19yeah, but don't worry...it will all come back in early October, Osama, hatered toward homosexuals & flag burning.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Not surprising, considering these comments from Bush at his March 2002 press conference.(1)
Q: But don't you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won't truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him...

another possible reason: OBL still works for the CIA.
go ahead, mod me down - election, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21he's only got a few weeks in office so Bush needs all the time he can get to plan his golfing trips and karaoke engagements
- Buckets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13And I thought Bush wasn't going to rest until Bin Laden was brought to justice...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Osama is needed to further the adminstration's cause for the war on terror and its politics of fear. Plain and simple, they need a bad guy in order to further their neo-conservative agendas. Personally, I believe Osama is dead. The Pakastani press published articles in December 2001 that he died. The Egyptian newspaper al-Wafd published an article in December 2001 as well that described Osama's funeral. All of this of course going unreported in the US and toatlly ignored by the corporate controlled US media.

- Crave, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15He's served his purpose. He gave the US a reason to attack Iraq. Killing him now might make people wonder why there are still troops there.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you've got him confused with OJ and the "real killer".
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8have you ever seen the post 9-11 osama video? a half witted moron could tell that it is not actually osama. there have been many comparisons of footage and pictures, and it is exremely obvious that it is not him. of course, bush and co hailed it as proof.

- lebel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Osama is so 2001. 2006 is all about gay marriage, flag burning and some other election year fad.
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Good, because he's been DEAD SINCE DECEMBER 2001.
http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osama_dead.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think (yes, think. No one can say with absolute certainty) that a lot of you are blind to the reality of the situation. There's a reason he hasn't been captured. This isn't completely on Bush either, no, take a look at this article: [http://www.infowars.com/saved%20pages/Prior_Knowledge/Clinton_let_bin_laden.htm] We let him slip away.
A country like the US DOES have the capability to find a man like Bin Laden. But as long as he's out there, as long as there is a justification for an ongoing crusade through the rest of the world in the name of "Spreading Freedom," then why should they capture him? A short 1 or 2% approval rating?
Recall when the Bush administration tried to link Al Qaeda to Iraq. No coincidence there either. And it's not a coincidence that the CIA is closing a search for the most wanted man in the world. - andykram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I dugg your comment - mostly due to the part about the "corporate controlled US media"... Boy, do I hate our press...
- Deyan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Bin Laden is an old man in need of regular hemodialysis. He does NOT live in a cave.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11By calling off the "search", Osama can return to the States to resume golfing with the Bushes. After 4 or 5 years, Bin Ladin's probably a bit rusty now.
(Assuming, of course, that he is still alive and hasn't died from diabetes. - mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The page you link to says that this is what is up with at least the 2004 video: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osamatape2.html
The problem is, they keep reporting that US intelligence has confirmed that it is bin Laden in the videos and tapes...so why would the US want to lie to us, saying that he is still alive, but then close the file? - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I dono if what Zarqawi's relatives said was correct (about Al Qaida selling him out in exchange for letting up on bin laden) or if this is just further proof that our government has been using Al Qaida as an ally since before 9/11. It wouldn't suprise me...
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So, to sum things up: There is no real evidence that Bin Laden was behind the 11/9/01 attacks, and those tapes implicating him were fake. This makes Bush's statements make a lot more sense, "I'm not concerned about him." has an entirely different meaning when you KNOW without doubt that the person in question was not guilty of the attacks he was accused of. Furthermore, it puts everything that was said to justify the Iraq invasion in a different context. If Bin Laden didn't mastermind the attacks, his people certainly weren't in cahoots with Saddam, so there goes that reason. Of course, no biological or chemical weapons were ever found in Iraq, and it's quite likely Hussain hadn't had anything for years before hand. So, there goes that reason.
The only logical explanation that is left: Bush illegally invaded a sovereign (a word he doesn't even understand) nation to oil profits. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is the new tactic announcing "We give up, we're not looking for you anymore", then throwing the cuffs on him when he starts walking around freely? This for a man who may not even be alive anymore?
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Osama is a terrorist and will remain a high priority. However, the government does not have any evidence that he was connected to 911. That is what they want the public to believe because they need to put a face on evil."
Erm, didn't Osama release a video tape claiming responsibility? - dandyhighwayman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More info on this story here--a must read:
http://www.marilyncarolyn.com/2006/07/cia-gives-up-hunt-for-osama.html - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5 2002 audiotape: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/binladen_audio.html

2004 videotape: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osamatape2.html
"Close (closer than the last phony) but no cigar. Note the shape of the cheeks and the width of the nose.
His arms and hands are in view and appear uninjured, whereas it was reported that the real Osama's left arm was severely injured at Tora Bora."
And this most recent tape--"a SEA CHANGE for Al-Qaeda...exhorts Sunnis to reject national unity and warns them against participating in politics" ...wow.
and 'confirmed' by none other than the CIA. - ubaron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How is this story related to Bush? Are you saying the CIA agents coordinate field operations with the President?
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Assuming that's true, why would his wife know about this? She doesn't cite any source of information other than her belief that that's what happened.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Related to this story:
http://digg.com/world_news/Zarqawi_s_Wife_Al-Qaida_Sold_Him_Out_To_The_U.S. - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mmortal, the thing is, face recognition software doesn't really need to account for proportion between two samples. The way it works is, it takes a sampling of points (eyes, cheeks, lips, etc) starting from the nose, and compares the spacing of said points. If the spacing is proportionately the same, you can conclude you have a match. People that look similar will not cause a match, because the accuracy is such that you could differentiate identical twins.
- andreas1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They can't find him but they know all about his health? Maybe they could ask the doctor who told them about his arm where he is since he obviously knows..
- kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My my the most powerful country in the world can't even find Osama bin Ladin. Who I believe is old & is surviving through a dialysis!
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought that the story was probobly BS, but then the next day, this surfaces. Considering our government, I wouldnt put it past them.
- toobueller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Meanwhile, al-Zarqawi's wife told an Italian newspaper that al Qaeda leaders sold him out to the United States in exchange for a promise to let up in the search for Osama bin Laden."
Taken fron the story here: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/03/zarqawi.ap/index.html - mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks n00854180t, I didn't realize that THAT site was using face recognition software. Is it, and/or are there other sites using face recognition software that have tested the 2004 video and said it is not really him?
Also, I see what you mean about face recognition software, but what if the video is not scaled proportionately, but instead compressed more vertically or horizontally? It would seem that that WOULD throw off what you called the "spacing of said points", and the software would then have no reference to correct these compressions to get accurate measures from it. - honkyman5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Just ignore the Osama tape please. Don't let facts interfere with our preconceived opinions.
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm not sure I follow you. The US ignored OBL for decades and eventually he probably was involved in the planning or support of events of 9/11.
How is that related to the current US administration trying to sell a fictitious link between Al Qaeda and the Iraqi administration?
I also don't think that you can really say without OBL there could have been no 9/11 or an 'ongoing crusade ' - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, so tell me again, how much money was spent on 'searching'?!!!!!!!!!!!!
- M2UK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But hasn't he allegedly been captured or dead for a long time now.. and the US are just keeping quiet to keep a publicity ghost around for the sheep to follow as support.
- mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I mean, I see where you are coming from. Your explanation is that the CIA themselves were going to decide when they stop distributing their lies, so they were going to continue to spread their lie about bin Laden until they personally closed their file on him, at which point they would conveniently still not have to tell anyone the truth, and they would also have the benefit of not having to work so much at the lying anymore.
That is, unless he really is still alive. It just depends on which information source you trust the most.
One flaw in the picture comparisons on that page that you linked to is that it doesn't look to be properly making the video captures equal in proportion, which could account for the differences in the width of his face. Also, that one video where he "looks so much different" the site is using a capture to directly compare to the others in which he is smiling, compared to all the rest of the older pics where he isn't. If you look at the captures from that same "questionable" video where he isn't smiling, the difference in facial structure, if there is any, isn't as apparent. - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, Digg does have a spell-check, you should use it.
- Blazeix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, I heard this too. Zarqawi's wife said that in an interview with an italian reporter. Here's a link to one of the articles.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060703.walzarwife0703/BNStory/International/home - Darthcactaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesn't mean they still can't look for him 'unofficially' (if they where seriously looking for him at all).
Either way like Zarqawi, even if they announce that he's dead/captured, the terror threat will not go away. It would just be for morale.
Wouldn't be funny if he pops up sometime around November? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well his dad ran the CIA for a number of years. He even participated a few times. I wouldn't be doubtful if you told me that Dubya was making some calls with CIA work.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the reason they can't catch him is because they don't want to. America used Bin Laden to flush out the Russians from Afghanistan, and they won the Taliban's favor by supplying them weapons and money. Bin Laden is a rich and shrewd businessman, he has large resources at the ready to do whatever he wants. If he just shaves his beard and wears a suit you wouldn't have the slightest clue who he was.
They close the case, because Bin Laden is a valuable tool to America - they can periodically open the file and say they are going after him, plus they can covertly fund him to do more terrorist attacks or use him as a scapegoat for every social problem in America. - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know whether or not they're using facial recognition software. They might have used software to determine if the person speaking had the same speech patterns as Bin Laden (just throwing out multiple methods of authentication that I can think of). They may also have checked into the data of the original audio/video file (assuming they were digital). Things like dates and certain types of patterns can give away the authenticity of audio/video.
As to whether or not the aspect ratio of the video would matter in facial recognition, I'm going to say no. The reason is that any decent facial recognition software would only "care" about the relative space between points, rather than absolute space. If I were writing my own system for face recognition, that's how I'd set it up (I'm a software dev, I've looked into making such a system for robots). I think the most prevalent system is one that's employed in casinos in Las Vegas, and it's quite sophisticated. I'm guessing that if one were to run photos of Bin Laden against screen captures of some of the questionable videos, the result would be quite interesting (although, probably not surprising if you doubt the authenticity of the videos). -
