L Ron Hubbard and Aleister Crowley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard#Controversial_episodes
"One controversial aspect of Hubbard's early life revolves around his association with Jack Parsons, an aeronautics professor at Caltech and an associate of the British occultist Aleister Crowley.
Hubbard and Parsons were allegedly engaged in the practice of ritual magick in 1946, including an extended set of sex magick rituals called the Babalon Working [BFing each other into a frenzy], intended to summon a goddess or "moonchild." The Church insists Hubbard was a US government intelligence agent on a mission to end Parsons' magickal activities and to "rescue" a girl Parsons was "using" for magickal purposes. In a 1952 lecture series, Hubbard recommended a book of Crowley's and referred to him as "Mad Old Boy"[106][107] and as "my very good friend".[108]. Hubbard later married the girl he said that he rescued from Parsons, Sara Northrup. [109] Crowley recorded in his notes that he considered Hubbard a "lout" who made off with Parsons' money and girlfriend in an "ordinary confidence trick".[7][1]"

- Keach, on 10/11/2007, -14/+23Also, anyone can leave the Christian Church anytime they want without being harassed, followed, and disconnected by family members.
I'm not talking about Mormons or JWs here, which are Cults.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4816055229487356909&q=God+Makers
Both practice forms of "Disconnection" from family, just like Scientology. Classic Cult Behavior. - littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10The current head of $cientology started off as L Ron Hubbard's Butt Boy, I mean Cabin Boy, I mean "assistant" in Sea Org.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Miscavige
"Miscavige left high school in 1976 and joined the Church of Scientology's Sea Org and Commodore's Messenger Organization, where, while still a teenager, he became one of L. Ron Hubbard's assistants."
He's a Control Freak, a Gun Freak, Delusional, and Paranoid.
-- http://www.lermanet.com/exit/miscavige.htm - spidoman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Mormonism does not practice harrasment for people who leave. Obviously a family may be upset if a member decides to leave, and friends may not wish to be friends anymore but those are all personal decisions, the official church stance is that you should still be their friend, and a personal decision of belief should not effect the relationships of the family. My mother left the church in her twenties, her family was upset, as any family would be, but got over their frustrations and get along with her just fine, she has many friends in the church still as well. If a person is against the church while in the church the church will obviously excommunicate them (as any group non-religious or religious would.) Once they are gone however, the church doesn't go further, why should they?
A large difference between mormonism and Scientology in terms of supressing negative opinion is that scientology wishes to control people outside of their religion as well as inside. Once someone is out of the religion scientology continues to attack, mormonism stops because it is not their place. - djAnakin, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9@keach:
Wrong.
Mormons are not members of a cult. Trust me.. I was raised one, but have been non-practicing for 10 years. There is absolutely nothing wierd, or cultish about the LDS church. THey believe in Jesus, and God, and all the things they've done, just like any other Christian religion. Joseph Smith was simply a prophet, just like the Pope, Mohammad, Buddah, et al.
Do some research before you go spreading ***** that you saw on some uninformed video. - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11The pope isn't a prophet and nor was Joseph Smith. He was a conman, just like L Ron Hubbard. While the dogma of a religion can often exist in stark contrast to the beliefs of its members, the founding premises of mormonism are completely irrational. True, this can be said for many other religions. The difference is that the mormon's beliefs are demonstrably false, founded on bigoted principles and completely ***** insane.
- doran96, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@spidoman Mormonism is not a cult, who are you kidding? They believe that their "President" is infallible, that he speaks for God. They revere Joseph Smith as a Prophet and hold his writings as Canon, stuff he deciphered from Gold Plates that mysteriously disappear. They sit around in their free time and "baptize" people by proxy! For those who don't know what I'm talking about they actually assemble lists of dead people and baptize one of their members in the deceased persons name. How about the fact that their missionaries purposely mislead you to convert you. Then they make you feel guilty for not pressuring your family to Join. They also make a big deal about how they are Christians, but they deny the Holy Trinity, something they leave out while trying to convert people. Please don't try and defend Mormons, they are almost as bad as Scientologists....

Bahahaaha try to hide? Mormons have what are called the articles of faith, their basic beliefs. They have cards that they can hand out that list these beliefs. The FIRST one states that mormons do not believe in the trinity, but in God, The Son, and the Holy Ghost being three separate beings.
Mormons are unusual ain't no doubt about it. Mormons do unusual religious practices, no denying that. But I'll judge them by the quality of their character and their actions.
You want to see all the evil the mormons are doing with their bizarre history, proxy baptisms, and prophet? Here ya go.

In case you don't want to actually look: Currently over 2,000 humanitarian projects (NOT missionary work) going on worldwide. A billion dollars in aid. And that's just the church, not it's individual members.
That sure is one evil organization. - doran96, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@spidoman
I never said all Mormons where evil, just pointing out that the church is a CULT.... I don't mind looking at facts, nice source I've got a few myself.
http://www.mormoncurtain.com/topic_serviceandcharity.html
Notice on the link it states "Less than 1 half of one penny per dollar is spent by the Mormon Church on humanitarian projects by monies donated to the Church by members (see LDS Church Canadian reporting and United Kingdom reporting)."
One whole percent, how charitable. By your logic the KKK should be considered a good organization. www.kukluxklan.bz/faq.html
You sure you're not a practicing Mormon ?
By the way if you want to look up how "evil" the church is, do some research on BYU professors defending church doctrine on the origins of Native Americans. The church builds it's doctrine on the fact that Native Americans, at least some of them, are descending from Jewish ancestry. Mitochondrial DNA evidence proves otherwise. Not that it's much different from nutty evangelists preaching intelligent design. I had the benefit of asking a Mormon Bishop that question, he told me that according to BYU other scientists were wrong. I'll make sure to let the NIH and NSF know that their members don't know what they are doing.

***** Scientology.- laterallateral, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6"Scientology as an American phenomena" is a fallacy. Remember that most of the attention the organization has gotten lately has been generated by their high-profile celebrity membership. People like Tom Cruise can't fart without gathering massive media attention. Now THAT level of fame is a condition that is inherently American. Scientology probably wants to cultivate the notion that it's predominantly American so that it can operate more stealthily, everywhere else.

- edebolt, on 10/11/2007, -64/+3lets not stigmatize things with the label of Cult. Its just word that means "Cultivation". If a follower of anything gives up some personal choice and takes direction from a leader, idea, philosophy, group for the purposes of self change or improvement then its a Cultivation or Cult relationship. Some will say Cults are only when the leader is alive etc but its a messy distinction. Since L Ron has already kicked it then maybe CoS is a religion and a strange one at that.
Conceptually whether we follow Jesus, Mohammed, Tony Blair, Dr. Phil, The Pope etc etc then its a Cult or Cultivation choice the individual is making. Some would even say motherhood/fatherhood is a cult. I think for most people its like Pornography.. You know it when you see it. I would offer that the distinction is cloudy and completely perspective driven. One persons cult is another persons salvation.- Matri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Hello scientology shill.

I do hope Google starts to make those two terms inextricable. Failing that, take cult and swap the "L" for an "N". - samdu, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3The only thing that separates a religion and a cult is about 2,000 years.

The world has gone mad. - ezweave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6What are you even talking about?
The word "cult" does not come from the word "cultivation". It comes from the latin word, "cultus" which means "adoration" or "blind adoration". Scientologists are always making up words and etymology.
- Nocturnal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26You guys who think Christianity or being Catholic is worse off than Scientology are all smoking crack and I would like to ask you to pass that pipe over this way. You guys are all flying like a kite.
Christianity does not teach you or prohibit you from taking any type of medication so that you can better yourself. Scientology is against pretty much all psychiatric medication. If you're schitzophrenic, ***** that, no medicine for you, you just need a little alien help to get you over the hump. If you have diabetes, no insulin shots for you, ***** that *****. You just need the alien help so you can fix this "issue" of yours.
You guys are off your rocking chairs if you think Scientology is better than any other form of religion. They are an extreme cult with lunatics like Tom Cruise running the show due to their $$$$$$$.- venom8599, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10 Not defending Scientology's aversion to psychiatry, but some sects in Christianity do reject modern medical treatment. They'll die of whatever disease they get (or let their family members die) instead of helping to treat their condition. If I remember correctly, some of them will only treat physical injury like broken bones or other trauma.
I think it's for different reasons for Scientology.
Cooky Christians: God wanted you to have this disease, so we're not stopping God's will.
Scientologists: Oh *****, they might figure out we're scamming them. Better tell them psychiatry is evil.
And actually, I'd bet the celebrities are either given some "Scientology Lite" version of the religion, or exposed to something completely different than the normal folks. - gadgetuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I guess you could perhaps compare the Jehova's Witness aversion to blood transfusions... but... that isn't a self-serving belief like the anti-psychiatrist doctrine of the Scientologists. It's pretty obvious really, psychiatry can easily break the grip of a brainwashing cult, it's simply self preservation on the part of Scientology hence the ridiculous association of the holocaust with psychiatrists!
- pebcake, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15"Not defending Scientology's aversion to psychiatry, but some sects in Christianity do reject modern medical treatment."
Indeed. The difference is that ALL Scientologists reject it, where as VERY FEW Christians do. The Christian sects who reject it are dangerous cults as well, but ALL of Scientology is a dangerous cult. - WraythX, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3The "Christian" religion that also denies medical treatment is the Jehovah's Witness religion - they refuse blood tranfusions because their bible (not THE bible - they use one translated from the Greek by the inventor of the religion - who, incidentally, spoke no Greek which was proven in court) says that humans should not eat blood. They have somehow figured that transfusing blood is the same as eating it. They also ignore the fact that Christ said that no foods are forbidden (removing the dietary laws of the jews) - so if they really are Christians, they should be allowed to eat blood anyway!
A bit OT but they also believe that only 4400 virgins will make it to heaven. I once upset a JW knocking on my door by asking if she was a virgin - she was very taken aback and walked away - worked better than just closing the door on them because they won't come back :) - SpenceMasta, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1havent major religions wide openly protested other medical treatments like i dunno abortion, stem cell stuff, contraception?

wake up. They are still here, and it won't go away. These people devote their whole life to this. Would you do the same to stop them?
We can only try to reach as many people as possible and warn them. But that doesn't happen on Digg, it happens in the real world. Warn your parents, your family, your friends, everyone about these dangerous people.
The only way to really stop them is by destroying them completely, but there are laws in the way. That, and it's messy and would cost a lot of money.
Just spread the warning, spread information, try to find out who they are, where the money comes from, discredit their companies on the net, etc.

- Suplyndmnd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5After watching the video I have a new found respect for Mr. Hubbard. I mean, he made a religion out of giving away money to him. All you haters, you're just mad you cant create a religion like this lol.
Seriously though, I try not to hate on any religion as I have no idea which is the "true" religion. But i can safely say, this isn't it. I wont mock anyone for their religious beliefs, unless it's scientology. I believe people in this "religion" should be mocked openly and publicly. I just do not understand a "religion" that stalks people who openly say it's *****. Imagine the pope having you followed. Simply put, if you buy into this scientology "religion" you deserve what you get. Hate the lady died, but it was of her damn doing.- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Actually, pretty much anyone CAN do exactly what Hubbard did. It happens all the time, just rarely on the scale that Hubbard achieved. In fact, Harlan Ellison is on record as having discussed the idea of making up a religion with Hubbard prior to the creation of Scientology. And while it would be possible to create a religion and feed on people's weaknesses, I'd like to think that the reason it's not more common is that, well, it's evil.
- IbnDigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Serious question here.
Scientology seem like a money making business to me, pay for course, confess sins, pay for next course, confess more sins. Should you want out, you're screwed as confessed sins will be used against you.
Question is should I be worried about ever falling into this trap as I am totally broke so scientologists wouldn't even want to know me. Or would they? Do they have any devious mechanisms to extract money from people with no money?- coolmos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yes, they make you work your butt off for extremely low pay. No joke.
- AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"Do they have any devious mechanisms to extract money from people with no money?"
You bet they do! You have to take auditing sessions to be in the church, and they're quite expensive. Can't afford them? No problem! The church will give you huge discounts! But if you ever try to leave the church, they'll sue you for full price. And as long as you're in the church, you'll have to work for them for very little pay to stay a member.

They have the same basic beliefs as other religions (some giant space fairy is responsible for life on earth...blah blah blah), they suck a huge portion of their members' pay down, and they like to crush dissent.

There are lots of differences between religions. The ones that are more introspective and soul-searching, like Buddhism, that don't harass people by evangelizing (like Christians) are not bad at all. They actually help people to be more focused and spiritual with real values and morals. Jesus was even most likely a Buddhist spiritual leader. The Romans bastardized the religion and fused it with supernatural to create Christianity.
Actually Scientology is also focused on living a healthy life. They are simple under attack by Christian forces that feel threatened as Atheism and Eastern religions are on the rise, because they have more to offer people. - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14morelia Scientology has nothing to offer people. Dude, you left part of the "other religions" message out... Sure, maybe Scientology will sue your ass off and make your life (the real one that you're living right now) miserable. But... Christians are happy to warn you that you'll burn in hell for all eternity if you fail to believe what they're "glad to tell you about".
But I guess Scientology is still the worst, since getting your ass sued off is something unpleasant AND entirely plausible.

In Christianity we have pedophile madness, supernatural woo woo gods and acts, rampant demonization of Gays, enough rednecks to make one vomit, the murdering of witches, the murdering of heretics, the lynching of Blacks as family sport, the enslavement of Blacks, the the ..., the ..., the .... People are murdered and commit suicide every day in the name of the Christian God.
Scientology is pure Heaven in contrast.- orientis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Tell that to Lisa Macpherson. The cult you belong to is evil. They are taking your money and what do you get in return? Seriously, what do you get?

- adnams, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5now, im no fan of any religion. Buddhism makes the most sense to me, but i class it in a different manner to most religions, it being more of a case of tools to help you lead your life. But please, what kind of ***** wacko religion harrases, discredits and attempts to destroy anyone who criticises it? I watched the panarama program last night, and have come to the conclusion, that whilst many of scientologies members may be confused and lost, the organisers behind it are not wacko's they are EVIL, plain and simple! But what can you do? At least the British government hasn't given them the status of "Religion"! Like i said, i am not religious at all, but i can see that it helps some people and therefore they have some value. Providing it allows them to leave if they wish. Do everything you can to stop this madness before they suck anymore people in, tell everyone you know!
- crichton101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6you're a nut. Scientology is nothing more then an evil vicious organization bent on control. Control of it's followers, and control of it's critics. A real religion wouldn't hire lawyers to try and legally prove itself to be a religion, only overly zealous scam artists who fear that they may be shown for what they really are would care. Someone who speaks the truth only has to worry about being seen as a liar when the real liars distort the truth and the legal system to make the truth teller appear so. And Truth doesn't need to silence it's critics because it can withstand them, but a lie never stands up to real criticism and needs extra help to survive the assault.

Most cults do get this kind of media scrutiny. Real religions usually don't because for the most part they are usually not destructive to human life, they don't spy on critics or harass them. They don't harass or name call someone for simply disagreeing with them. And most real religions can have polite, mature, and not to mention civil debates with non believers or critics without resorting to calling the non believer a bigot simply because they say something the true believer doesn't like or want to hear. Scientologist cult members can't take any level of criticism without becoming rude, sounds like they're a bit paranoid and need to see a psychiatrickerest and get some good meds.
- Alex001, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0Most religions are cults anyways with a few exceptions, but the way i see it is if your going go around to my house and try to preach to me about things i don't believe in or care to then try to make me feel guilty for not joining thats pretty much a cult it may not be some satanic rituals or some ***** but hey going to church once a week and listening to stuff you don't believe or want to might as well be the same... That being said I like cults in the sense it gives some people who otherwise wouldn't have them some ethics and morals.

Have you achieved OT3 yet?
If so, can't help you, but you know everyone's statements are at least accurate.
If not, go look it up online, you won't die of the flu.
You can find it on German and Finnish government servers. It's public domain because it was used in court cases (they blocked this in the United States for a long period of time by touting it as a "trade secret").
Read it. That is the core of the Scientology belief. That is the SOLE explanation to all the awesome secrets L Ron Hubbard magically knew and was able to spread.
Further, that LR electrical training done in Scientology has been criticized by psychologists as word-for-word brainwashing. Of course, that's part of why Scientology hates psychologists. - kungfujedis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Down with Scientology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "Christian" religion that also denies medical treatment is the Jehovah's Witness religion - they refuse blood tranfusions because their bible (not THE bible - they use one translated from the Greek by the inventor of the religion - who, incidentally, spoke no Greek which was proven in court) says that humans should not eat blood. They have somehow figured that transfusing blood is the same as eating it. They also ignore the fact that Christ said that no foods are forbidden (removing the dietary laws of the jews) - so if they really are Christians, they should be allowed to eat blood anyway!
(1) Jehovah's Witnesses refuse whole blood transfussions out of respect for the sanctity of blood - it is what gives you life, it is sacred to God. They do not refuse all medical treatments. They work closely with hospitals and doctors to get the BEST treatment available; which has also, by the way, benefited other individuals, not just JW's, who refuse to have blood transfusions.
go visit: www.noblood.org
(2) Transfusions are just like eating it. Why do you think they intraveniously feed people who cannot orally take in food? Aren't blood transfusions to keep you alive? How many times have doctors told patients that they'll die if they don't get a blood transfusion? Both the Hebrew and Greek scriptures speak about not taking/eating blood, see Lev. 17:14, Lev. 7:26, 27 and Acts 15:28, 29 and 21:25
(3) As far as the Bible JW's didn't get their "own" Bible until the 50's or 60's, or rather way after their "founder" passed on, until then they used whatever Bible was available at the time - most likely the King James Version - they still use other Bibles, not just their "own" to back up what they preach.
A bit OT but they also believe that only 4400 virgins will make it to heaven. I once upset a JW knocking on my door by asking if she was a virgin - she was very taken aback and walked away - worked better than just closing the door on them because they won't come back :)
(4) JW's do not believe that 4400 virgins go to heaven -how stupid is that?! They do believe that only 144,000 go to heaven, which is brought out in Revelation 7:4, 9 and 14:1, 3, these are to rule with Christ, Rev. 5:9, 10
If you don't want JW's to go to your door anymore then just tell them so and they will do their best to make sure they don't. No need to be rude.
If you want to find out more a Non-JW has produced a documentary called "Knocking" about JW's practices and beliefs. Go to www.knocking.org or just Google "Knocking"- gopher043, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6thanks jammin for clarifying that from the ignorance that spewed it.

The point is Scientology is in its early stages and whilst i agree completely that it is terrifying, is it any more terrifying than fundamentalist Christians in America destabilizing the middle east and coming up with pseudoscience such as "Intelligent Design"?
