Having actually seen the original broadcast of this show, I can fully express my opinion.
Scientology is a terrifying cult. They need to be stopped. The end. - Keach, on 10/11/2007, -3/+99Dude, you're "Fair Game" now.

"The BBC Panorama inviestigation into Scientology[30] indicates that similar practices continue into 2007:
"On May 12, 2007 Journalist John Sweeney of BBC News made comments highly critical of Scientology and its teachings, and further reported that since beginning an extensive investigation he had been harrassed, surveilled, and investigated by strangers. Sweeney wrote, "I have been shouted at, spied on, had my hotel invaded at midnight, denounced as a "bigot" by star Scientologists, brain-washed...and chased round the streets of Los Angeles by sinister strangers. Back in Britain strangers have called on my neighbours, my mother-in-law's house and someone spied on my wedding and fled the moment he was challenged." In another passage, "He [Scientology representative Tommy Davis] harangued me for talking to...heretics. I told him that Scientology had been spying on the BBC and that was creepy." And in another passage, "In LA, the moment our hire car left the airport we realised we were being followed by two cars. In our hotel a weird stranger spent every breakfast listening to us." [31]"
Prepare to be Destroyed by Lord Xenu! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+86I never thought I'd say this, but I think Scientology is actually way more insane than Christianity.
- M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+65Dude, the show is called "48 Hours".... it's not 48 hours long.
- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+58There are many reasons to spread news about Scientology:
1) They are a high control cult that practices a campaign of intimidation and who knows what against its critics.
2) Not only do they claim psychiatry was responsible for the holocaust, they actively practice psychological quackery and ban psychiatric medications to the most psychotic of their followers (as evidenced by this CBS special).
3) Basically, they brainwash people into giving them a bunch of money. (I don't know if brainwash is the right term, more like used car salesman manipulation times 10).
4) What's more, their own founder speculated about starting a religion to make a ***** of money.
5) Scientology has been actively infiltrating our governments and is considered a criminal organization in parts of Germany.
I could go on, but you can find this and other stuff like this online. - MikeMacMan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+51***** Scientology
- Berkana, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47No, they're DC-8's. *sarcasm*
Seriously, what difference does it make? The whole thing is pure *****. - littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46That doesn't sound like Digg. Are you sure that was the reason? Lots of people express their views about Scientology on Digg.
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -3/+47@themastermb,
if expressing views against scientology were a punishable offense, we'd all be suspended from digg. - littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -9/+50UNIVERSAL DEFINITION
CULT - Any group which has a pyramid type authoritarian leadership structure with all teaching and guidance coming from the person/persons at the top. The group will claim to be the only way to God; Nirvana; Paradise; Ultimate Reality; Full Potential, Way to Happiness etc, and will use thought reform or mind control techniques to gain control and keep their members. This definition covers cults within all major world religions, along with those cults which have no OBVIOUS religious base such as commercial, educational and psychological cults. Others may define these a little differently, but this is the simplest to work from. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34He got banned for joining a Digg down party.

- Matri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31Hello scientology shill.
- Berkana, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33@fugazied:
I think in the context of how the BBC and 48 hours reported it, "cult" refers to an organization, not a set of beliefs. For example, *Catholicism* (note the "-ism") and Buddhism are sets of beliefs, whereas the *Church of Scientology*, and the *Roman Catholic Church* are organizations. (There is no central organization of Buddhism as a whole.) As for Scientology, I don't think the beliefs and practices can be separated from the organization. Nobody practices Scientology outside of the Church of Scientology, and those who have tried have faced the wrath of the Church of Scientology.
If you're strictly talking about beliefs, it makes no sense to call one set a cult and another set a religion; such a distinction is purely subjective. However, if you're strictly talking about organizations, such as the Church of Scientology, in light of the policies and practices of the organization, one can objectively evaluate whether or not they practice cult behavior. I think the practices of the Church of Scientology land it squarely in the cult category.
(Within the Catholic Church, some Catholics have complained that the order of Opus Dei is a cult, though they share the same essential beliefs. In light of this, I make the distinction between beliefs and the organizations in which they are practiced. That's where I draw my conclusions from.) - coolmos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Hmm. Somehow, i think someone could even make a decent game out of this. Alien Overlords, Volcano's, DC8's, B-52's, Thetans. Probably something like Galaxian, but a little deeper. Maybe combined with Pacman and some shooter.
And where are the Xenu figurines? The marketing of this cult is just abysmal.
No wait! Like Pokemon, but then you collect Thetans!
They could get Sony to do this. That company is just so ***** up, they wouldn't hesitate if there's enough $$$$. - gadgetuk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31Oh, it's a cult alright. It's the cultiest cult that ever existed. As far as cults go, it's the biggest cult that ever culted. It's the cults cult. Other cults aspire to be as cult as this cult. In case there's any doubt about my opinion on this cult....

I do hope Google starts to make those two terms inextricable. Failing that, take cult and swap the "L" for an "N". - M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28E-Meter.
"By itself, this meter does nothing. It is solely for the guide of Ministers of the Church in confessionals and pasotoral counselling. The Electrometer is not medically or scientifically useful for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of any disease. It is not medically or scientifically capable of improving the health or body function of anyone and is for religious use by students and Ministers of the Church of Scientology only."
So... it's as useful as a brick? Gotcha. - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29morelia is a Scientologist! SHILL SHILL SHILL
Get help buddy. You're in a cult. The 'tech' of scientology is *****. I can make an e-meter with parts from Radio Shack - it measures nothing but the mild electrical current of your body.
Have you ever seen a Clear do anything extraordinary? I mean their mind powers. Ever seen them in action?
If you think Scientology methods work, why do you think doctors disagree? Do you think there is a worldwide international conspiracy of doctors?
Get help. Please. - Matri, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30They flew in DC-10s, not B-52s.
- RAEP, on 10/11/2007, -7/+32Tom Cruise: John, we'll need to take action on this. Set all weapons to lawsuit.
John Travolta: Aye sir. For L. Ron! - Nocturnal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26You guys who think Christianity or being Catholic is worse off than Scientology are all smoking crack and I would like to ask you to pass that pipe over this way. You guys are all flying like a kite.
Christianity does not teach you or prohibit you from taking any type of medication so that you can better yourself. Scientology is against pretty much all psychiatric medication. If you're schitzophrenic, ***** that, no medicine for you, you just need a little alien help to get you over the hump. If you have diabetes, no insulin shots for you, ***** that *****. You just need the alien help so you can fix this "issue" of yours.
You guys are off your rocking chairs if you think Scientology is better than any other form of religion. They are an extreme cult with lunatics like Tom Cruise running the show due to their $$$$$$$. - Beatmiser, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28http://www.lisamcpherson.org/
***** Scientology. - Cornloaf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22They will just infiltrate the offices of CBS and eliminate all the evidence. Just like Operation Snow White...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_snow_white - Keach, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22After you watch the 48 Hours show take a few minutes and check out a Scientology Audit. Pretty funny. Then again maybe not since they actually do this ***** and use people's answers against them if they ever want to leave.

- orientis, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Anyone can learn the Christian dogma - free. Unasked for, sometimes. To learn Scientology you have to pay. One is a cult, the other is not. Simple.

- WraythX, on 10/11/2007, -8/+24@fugazied - Catholics don't consider the Pope to be above other Christians or to be closer to God. He is regarded as the authority over the Church in defining matters relating to faith and morals. The Catholic dogma of Papal Infallibility means that Catholics believe he cannot make a mistake when defining dogma as long as three conditions apply: 1) He speaks as the Pope (not as Bishop of Rome or in any other capacity), 2) He speaks on matters of faith and morals (this excludes sciences etc.) and 3) His declaration is binding on the entire Church - ie, not just the Roman Catholics, but Roman and Eastern Catholics.
The Pope is a regular man who can teach falsely on matters relating to science, and even religion - but when he speaks "Ex Cathedra" the doctrine of infallibility says that he can not be wrong. His role is to lead the Church and to clarify points of dogma if confusion arises. - knupso, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17At least you can stack bricks together and build something.
- littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17They still believe it. They think if you know about it before you're an OT III, you'll go crazy.
I say you start going crazy when you join the cult. Once your an OT III, you're full on crazy. - AnteChronos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17@davidgx
"all religions are equally stupid. "
But not all religions are equally evil. Compare:
"We believe X, and we'll be glad to tell you all about it!"
to
"We believe Y, but you'll have to pay obscene amounts of money to join, and once you're in deep enough, we'll tell you that we *really* believe Z, but it's a secret. And you better not say anything bad about us, or we'll sue you into oblivion!" - Csma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17i feel like half these posts are from scientologists.....err thats just the voices in my head!

Hitler persecutes Jews.
Scientology persecutes Psychiatry.
Hitler kills everyone that doesn't agree with him.
Scientology destroys lives that don't agree with them.
Hitler pulls people into concentration camps and won't let them leave.
Scientology pulls people into their religion and won't them leave.
Hitler distorts history and the truth.
Scientology distorts history and the truth.
How many more examples can you add?

- pebcake, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15"Not defending Scientology's aversion to psychiatry, but some sects in Christianity do reject modern medical treatment."
Indeed. The difference is that ALL Scientologists reject it, where as VERY FEW Christians do. The Christian sects who reject it are dangerous cults as well, but ALL of Scientology is a dangerous cult. - Neorio, on 10/11/2007, -6/+18What I really like these days, is that globalisation and the internet are slowly chipping away and destroying asshat religion. Now we have to watch them all go crazy as they all pass away. I hope all those wackos are scared stupid because their time is up and humanity is moving forward.
Here is a cat, here is a bag. Notice how the cat is no longer in the bag. - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Tell that to Lisa Macpherson. The cult you belong to is evil. They are taking your money and what do you get in return? Seriously, what do you get?
- fugazied, on 10/11/2007, -29/+40Isn't catholicism a cult by that definition. I mean the idea of the pope as Vicarius Christi above other christians, closest to god and whom other catholics follow.. that is an authoritarian leadership structure?
- Andicow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Nono! Haven't you heard? That story is no longer acknowledged by them.
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13See "Battlefield Earth."
Or, to be honest, don't. I wish you no ill will and from what I've heard, sending someone to see this movie would be cruel and unusual punishment. - rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Isnt it funny how creationists desperately try to pretend they are part of a science, and scientologists desperately try to pretend they are part of a of a religion.
The world has gone mad. - Andicow, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Pretty sure this "church" is a world-wide affair. Granted it was penned by a sci-fi writer on U.S. soil...
But really... It's everywhere. - carmaa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I bet you $50 that there are hundreds of Scientology members on digg which only purpose is to digg down stories like this one. Anyone?
(To all you scientologists out there, get out before it is too late and some nutcase on top decides that the only way to properly destroy the aliens within you is to commit collective suicide. Seriously. Get. Out.) - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13What is a 'digg down party' ?
- babar77, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Concerning Mormons: My cousins are Mormon and I am not. They in no way ever tried disconnecting themselves or any of the crap I see Scientology doing. There are sects within Mormonism just like there are sects in Catholicism - polygamists for example. My cousins do not practice nor advocate polygamy. They don't attack people, discredit people, any of the other creepy things you see the Church of Scientology doing. Outside of a couple of practices I personally could not maintain such as no alcohol, caffine, etc. they are completely normal.

L Ron Hubbard and Aleister Crowley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard#Controversial_episodes
"One controversial aspect of Hubbard's early life revolves around his association with Jack Parsons, an aeronautics professor at Caltech and an associate of the British occultist Aleister Crowley.
Hubbard and Parsons were allegedly engaged in the practice of ritual magick in 1946, including an extended set of sex magick rituals called the Babalon Working [BFing each other into a frenzy], intended to summon a goddess or "moonchild." The Church insists Hubbard was a US government intelligence agent on a mission to end Parsons' magickal activities and to "rescue" a girl Parsons was "using" for magickal purposes. In a 1952 lecture series, Hubbard recommended a book of Crowley's and referred to him as "Mad Old Boy"[106][107] and as "my very good friend".[108]. Hubbard later married the girl he said that he rescued from Parsons, Sara Northrup. [109] Crowley recorded in his notes that he considered Hubbard a "lout" who made off with Parsons' money and girlfriend in an "ordinary confidence trick".[7][1]" -
