- greenvortex, on 11/12/2008, -15/+92Obama's flip-flop on FISA doesn't leave me very hopeful that he will do what is right here.
- northwatuppa, on 11/12/2008, -5/+61It's something to hope for, but I wouldn't count my chickens before they hatch.
- y0y0howsdajell0, on 11/13/2008, -18/+69Why would Obama expose something that he voted for? That makes little/no sense at all...Get it straight, people, Obama isn't the 2nd coming of Christ, he's another politician who's going to keep on with the same old, same old...
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -11/+53I doubt he'd expose a tactic he voted in favor of.
- jakereilly, on 11/13/2008, -5/+44The new congress will shred FISA?
Like they did with the patriot act when they gained control in 2006?
You honestly think the dems will actually get anything done?
lolz - wakeup82, on 11/13/2008, -4/+41Obama voted in favour of warrantless domestic wiretapping. Why would he want to expose this?
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -11/+31I like Turtles
- neo991lb, on 11/13/2008, -2/+19Most people "forget" that the Dems have been in control of the Senate for a couple years now, methinks.
- nullcodes, on 11/13/2008, -2/+19Thanks for giving 'em the heads up. There's a lot of time between now and Jan 20th to accidentally delete some emails, mistakenly roll a huge neodymium magnet over some missing hard drives, inadvertently drop some documents in the paper shredder.
It happens. It's happened before. - zydeco, on 11/13/2008, -1/+17Still doesn't make it legal.
- Chjoma10, on 11/13/2008, -10/+25I have a dick for your mouth
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -12/+27GOP controlled Congress? You might want to change your calendar to the year 2008. The FISA compromise was passed just a few months ago and Obama was a majority party senator.
Wow, are you a ***** dope. - enantiodromia, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13whistle blowers don't need presidential approval to tell their stories to the press. right thing or not, the public just knowing the truth will be a huge step in the right direction.
- eth3l, on 11/13/2008, -4/+17Dont forget, Obama voted to continue this program and did nothing to stop it.
- TitoBob, on 11/13/2008, -0/+12Seems like this is propagating the conspiracy theorists' agenda in a way that can't end well. It's like, "Area 51 revelations anticipated after Obama becomes president".. Then later, ftw -- he's not telling us anything?! He's part of the conspiracy too! Boo!!
How is this reporting news rather than making news?
How about "Actual news anticipated after reporters remember journalism is not reporting their own editorials"? - Ne007, on 11/13/2008, -3/+14My psychic powers tell me George W. will get away with everything.
Anyone want to bet against my psychic powers? - monkeyrun, on 11/13/2008, -4/+15err wtf are you talking about... Obama voted FOR wiretapping, he is in on this thing...
- enantiodromia, on 11/13/2008, -2/+13so the Secret Service are now involved with the wire tapping?
i think your confused dude, as usual. - haydukeqc, on 11/13/2008, -0/+11Someone has high expectations.
- LeepII, on 11/13/2008, -12/+22If you believe Obama will do the right thing, I have a bridge for sale.
- jakereilly, on 11/13/2008, -3/+13Nice, unfortunately people are digging you down for the truth.
- BENDER4SENATE, on 11/13/2008, -1/+11But I'll take him over Dubya, thanks.
- Skymodem, on 11/13/2008, -0/+10Your only mistake was the bit about"GOP controlled congress". The DEMS have not yet had a filibuster-proof or a veto-proof proof majority. The only way they could have effectively fought this is if they had a super-majority, which they may now actually attain to.
Otherwise, bingo! In spite of what the more cynical among us say, we are about to see the most sweeping rollback of toxic legislation and policy in American history.
This election was nothing less than an utter repudiation of Bush and GOP policy. All the histrionics squeaking from between the cheeks of all our favorite right-wingnuts is just that - histrionics.
It's a beautiful day, America! The truth will set us free, so let the truth come out. I'm guessing this is just a taste of the the horrors we'll begin to learn about after January 20, 09. - gobbleplex, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10It didn't seem to shut the Bush fans up after they took it for 8, you know.
- Ne007, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9You can't seriously believe that right? What drugs do you do cuz I want some of that happy stuff.
Looks like we took 2 different pills....I took the red and you took the blue.....
I like blue...I should have taken the blue.... - JustSmurfy, on 11/13/2008, -2/+10Maybe the whistleblowers will blow their whistles, but let's be honest with ourselves... the Bushies are undoubtedly keeping the paper shredders and degaussers running nonstop right now getting rid of every trace of the evidence.
- pchow, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8I'll believe it when it happens.
- Ne007, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8If it restores the integrity of the United States then so be it because we are nothing without it.
You can't just say ***** it and wiretap everything and everyone like the Russians did....that got them nowhere. - 55Test55, on 11/13/2008, -2/+9of course this won't happen. are people seriously this naive?
regardless of what people think, he is not the president yet...when he is and learns about this stuff, who's to say he wont say anything either? - Naieve, on 11/13/2008, -3/+10You guys have to understand, even when the Democrats control Congress, they are still allowed to vote for it before being against it, then blame it all on the republicans.
- fungalboom, on 11/13/2008, -1/+8The democrats haven't had enough of a majority to overthrow a veto. They couldn't have undone this.
- akhomestead, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6Bush will probably leave on his own. But Obama is not a dictator, he can't banish people, even ones that suck.
- toxicityj, on 11/13/2008, -4/+10QUICK! BURY THE TRUTH!!!! To all burying it- why? Is it a lie? Did he NOT vote in favor of it? Because I think we all know he did. And just because you'd like to pretend he's the second coming of a jesus and can do no wrong, doesn't mean he didn't vote in favor of something a majority of people are opposed to.
- malex, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6You are VASTY overestimating your own influence.
- aforsberg, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6Have you ever noticed that after you pee, no matter how many times you shake, the last drop ALWAYS gets in your underwear?
- enantiodromia, on 11/13/2008, -2/+8oh jebus, what crazy conspiracy theory is this one? the one where if you get a college loan you can pay it back in community service?
omg, what an evil thought, not being in debt when you are jobless and out of college, and helping your community. - zeblith, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5Bigot.
- marv0, on 11/13/2008, -12/+17They better try him for war crimes.
- sodade, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5Yeah Bush is gonna retreat to his supervillan hideout in Paraguay and send us taunting videos.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+7He's talking about Obama's plan to let college students do 100 hours of community service a year for a 4000 dollar tax break. I think that is such a great plan since those kids will learn so much doing community service that they'll never learn in college. I wish I was 10 years younger so I could go to school under this system. He also wants to grow the peace corps to something like 10 times its current size. He's got some great ideas to improve life here, but there are always going to be people out there saying the government shouldn't do anything but sit in their fancy offices and collect taxes all day.
- Mujokan, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5A fair few people don't seem to get that giving up on an amendment to cut a new legal defense for the telecoms is NOT the same thing as being IN FAVOR of warrantless wiretapping.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Speaking of shredding documents... I read The Great Shark Hunt again (it stays on the back of my toilet) throughout the election, and it is just astonishing how much the Bush administration mirrors that of Nixon both in terms of actions taken and general attitude. From the way he was supported and protected by the GOP and and supported and re-elected by neo-con voters, even after we all knew what a prick he was (I'm talking more about a Cheney/Nixon comparison here, actually), to the fact that both administrations pretty much re-interpreted the constitution in areas such as civil liberties, domestic spying, taking power from the legislative branch, general dickheadery and refusal to be open or candid or really explain to the American people what they are up to (straight up lies), down to the very definition of the post they held. Power/control freaks, all of them. Cheney started his career during Nixon's administration, and hopefully he will be forever out of politics at the end of Bush's.
You can really feel Dr. Thompson's frustration as he reports on the Nixon campaign leading up to the election day, when he woke up, cast his vote for George McGovern and went back to bed not wanting to hear the news coverage of an election that he knew Nixon would win. I did the same thing in 2004. Nixon ended up carrying 49 states in that election, only to be impeached and resign 2 years later with a 22% approval rating.
Reading Thompson inspired me to hit the library and read more on the subject (thank you LeVar Burton). Nixon is credited with creating the modern day Imperial Presidency, in which the presidency retains a high level of control over government policy and decisions. In the early 1970s, Nixon impounded billions of dollars in federal spending and expanded the power of the Office of Management and Budget. While Nixon ran a budget deficit every year he was President except 1969, Bush actually did much worse with the budget.
It is important to learn from the past. We have to be more political as a country, and not choose our leaders based on if we'd have a beer or watch a sports game with the candidate. Anyway, if any of you fine folks are still in college or high school and you're looking for an easy paper to write, this one wouldn't be hard at all to work into anything from 3 pages to 15 pages with plenty of resources to cite. You could pump out an A paper in an afternoon between rounds of Team Fortress and bong hits.
(to put it in internet terms): Nixon > Bush/Cheney - vandernderyid, on 11/13/2008, -6/+10"Obama voted uh-uh… thing terror stop."
- john2kx, on 11/13/2008, -2/+6This is true, but honestly, it's hard to tell if that vote reflects his real opinion on the matter. I think the timing of the bill affected his vote more than anything else.
If you recall, the vote for the FISA bill was right after he won the Democratic primary against Clinton, and therefore during the period of time when he was trying to appeal to more voters on the right.
Of course, it was a bad vote, but I think I'll wait to see what he does as President, rather than expect him to support immunity for wiretapping unconditionally. - Skymodem, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Don't be afraid, poor wingnut. We will protect you. Ssshh. Kiss, kiss. Don't cry. Here's a little lullaby for you, poor scared little wingnut:
Hush little wingnut don't you cry
Liberals will give back all your rights
And if your rights still make you afraid
Safety for freedom just ain't a good trade
Shall I go on? - Chjoma10, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4He's not your buddy, guy
- Skymodem, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4LOL!! Delusions of grandeur much? Have at it, you unhinged idiot. But keep the following in mind:
1) Obama was not *selected* by the SCOTUS - he was *elected* by an overwhelming plurality of American citizens. He has a 70% approval rating, and he hasn't even been sworn in yet.
2) His coat tails were really long - the DEMs now have larger majorities in the House and the Senate than the GOP have ever held at any time in American history - look it up.
3) In case you didn't notice, which wouldn't surprise me - the above two facts indicate that your media organs, your party, and your leaders have been rendered sterile. Powerless. Unable to control the narrative, or influence the outcome of anything for a long, long, long - time.
4) Oh, and I really just loooove this one: Bash yourself against it. Scream into the night. Rip out our hair, and scratch out your eyes. Rage against the machine. Pick your pejorative and fling it. The outcome is the same: you're *****, because nobody is listening. You live in an echo chamber, and nobody gives a ***** what you think anymore.
5) Never forget that we're all laughing at you. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -2/+61.) You openly admit that your GOP hero for the past 8 years was a mistake? Part of "the problem"? You oppose the wire tapping? Are you trying to hand the country over to the TERRORISTS!!!?!?!!! *scary music*
2.) I'm burying you for using Obamatrons. Get over it and stop being a troll. I'm just glad you didn't say HUSSEIN because then my head would have exploded.
3.) You're right about one thing. Obama isn't THAT different than anybody else who could have taken the office. You sound like you've got stars in your eyes for Obama as bad as anybody, but your partisan views makes you reject it so love turns to hate. Kinda like how the old guy on American Beauty constantly griped about "fagots" because he was secretly gay.
Look, man. *reality check* The election is over. Time to look forward and stay vigilant. You'll have plenty of time to win back some senate seats before 2016 when Obama's presidency ends. I guess I have every right to call you McSame for refusing to let go of the same annoying name calling mud slinging that made us stupid as a country all these months. - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4I understand the desire to look for a silver lining, so to speak. However, my problem with that way of thinking is that it basically says that he was "trying to appeal to the right" by voting in favor of taking away a right to privacy. Basically in order to win a few votes he decided that he should support extending warrantless wiretapping of Americans and give the telecoms immunity from eavesdropping.
Sorry, but that is absolutely pathetic on his part. Actually pathetic doesn't even begin to describe that type of selling out, in my opinion.
In politics, you can tell more about a person by their voting record than you can by the words coming out of their mouths. In Obama's case, on this issue, that equals a yes vote on the FISA compromise and a yes vote on the Patriot Act extension. That's telling to me. - iancgi, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Dont count on it!
Obama voted yes on the FISA bill which allowed even more wiretapping of Americans. It also gave immunity to the telecom companies who do it. -
