- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Shhhh!
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -13/+38Hezbollah -- which is "The Party of Allah" in Arabic -- has been an enemy of the USA since they were blamed for the bombing of the Marine barracks in the early 80s. Here is what Nasrallah, their leader, said about America after 9/11
Let the entire world hear me. Our hostility to the Great Satan [America] is absolute ...
I conclude my speech with the slogan that will continue to reverberate on all occasions so that nobody will think that we have weakened. Regardless of how the world has changed after 11 September, Death to America will remain our reverberating and powerful slogan: Death to America. (BBC Monitoring: Al-Manar, Sep. 27, 2002)
It's long past time we take action against Hezbollah, a proxy arm of the Iranian government and part of the Global Jihad. - AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -14/+37With Syria and Iran supporting Hezbollah, and Hezbollah making war on our ally Israel and attempting a coup against the democratic government in Beirut, this seems to be only common sense. The head of the snake lies in Iran though. It's just a matter of time before we must address the Mullahs more determinedly.
- Namrok, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Quite true. With Iran using religion, media and 3rd party terrorist groups as weapons against us, it seems only fitting that we level the playing field by using more than our military. I mean thats what liberals want right? Less troops, more talking? Well it takes money to get your message out, and if Iran and Saudi Arabia can fund their point of view, so can we.
- kooft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"Mr Bush's move is at the centre of a fresh drive by America, supported by the Sunni states of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt as well as Israel, to stop Iranian hegemony in the Middle East emerging from the collapse of Iraq."
Arab countries buddying up with Israel and the US against Iran? The powder keg is officially set. - argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I have a feeling that Hezbollah already knows that various American agencies are out to get them.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16@Lyph4
Have you ever said something to someone and had them punch you in the face? Diplomacy works that way sometimes... unless you have Kissinger... and I don't know if he speaks Arabic. - Namrok, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Hahah, oh Diplomacy. Thats a good one. You do realize that Diplomacy only has two aspects right? Bribes, and threats.
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, more pies. You do realize that we are already in the Israel/Palestinian/Lebanon conflict right?
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19The way to win any war: Fight on eight different fronts at the same time.
It worked wonders for Hitler. - simmonsdd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Oh wait... 9/11?
- spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10There is a time and place for self-defense. Conventional war and combat should be the last measure. The War on Terror needn't & ought not be a constant conventional one at the end of a barrel or bayonet -- but one of intelligence.
That being said, This shouldn't have been leaked. The last thing Siniora needs is the perception of being a US puppet, which he is not. This is an alignment of interests between Sunni regional self-preservation and American efforts against a groups that wish to harm it's interests as well as that of it's allies & collective participants (Saudis, Jordanians and Israelis - Strange Bedfellows)
The Democracy in Lebanon is real. It needs to work. The US can help it and not "control" it.
The fact that we're all able to read and digg this probably helps the "bad guys". WTH, right. Digg on. - keathmilligan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Diplomacy only works when it is backed by a credible threat of military action.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Yeah, bunnies and flowers and pixie dust stopped Hitler...we didnt need violence to do so.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9maybe they hate America because it's easy to whip the mob into a frenzy while pointing at the great satan.
- argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think we should put whoever leaked it on double secret probation.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Because everything that is bad is OUR fault.....
- kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@TybaltCpp
What a stupid cliche response. We should also listen to Lincoln, MLK, and Jesus too. - kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11No, they're sort of a ally, but in a one-sided relationship kind of way.
We give them money and troops. They take it. (And invade their neighbors from time to time.)
In return, they send us lobbyists. Win-win! Wait..... - Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Uuuhh.
This is Iran all over again, when the democratic Iranian government was overthrown in a CIA-backed coup in 1953, then ***** hit the fan and we have the mess we have now. Don't we ever learn anything. This is why they hate America; because you meddle in other peoples' affairs.
Team America: World Police. - hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9America, ***** Yeah!
- kooft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@JavaBean
"That said, are you one of those who wants us to go into Darfur? One mans 'meddling' is another's 'aid'."
There's a distinct difference between overthrowing a democratically elected government for strategic & oil purposes and stopping a genocide. Or do you not feel the genocide of Africans is worth stopping? - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10"Why not just, you know, not fight people and use a rarely used tactic known as "DIPLOMACY"?"
I love your sarcasm....oh wait you're serious. - cyn0sure, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I call ***** on this article. Anyone could write a piece like this, and no one can confirm it. More media shenanigans.
- nickelbagoffunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Arab countries buddying up with Israel and the US against Iran? The powder keg is officially set." The Middle East is quickly becoming what Europe was during the 1700-1800s. It's a battle ground for a regional power. Right now, there is no obvious regional leader, but Iran is trying to change that by spreading their influence in Lebanon and Iraq as well as through their development of a nuclear arsenal. Israel is the only other country in the region that is truly capable of checking Iran's advance. Most of the other countries in the region, while they do hate israel, don't want to fall behind in the race for superiority, and hence their willing assistance in this program.
- kooft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Namrok, that's the absolute biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Iranians committing genocide amongst themselves? There's no doubt that the government is extreme, but to accuse them of genocide because it bolsters your point of view is asinine and insulting to the millions who have died in actual genocides around the world.
"All non-Shiites are killed for the most part"
What about those 26,000 Jews that live in Iran (mostly in Tehran)? Aside from the point that there are other religions in Iran (and Sunni Islam as well), which aren't being persecuted, your argument is air-tight. ::rolls-eyes::
"And now Iran is trying to spread this to other countries,"
Hey, even if Iran is extreme, they're no where near as bad as the Saudi's. So why isn't anything being done about the Saudis? Explain that one.
Even if genocide is a valid reason for 'saving' Iran, why not save Darfur instead? Darfur happened first and is taking more lives that whatever is happening in Iran. What about Rwanda? Near 1 million Africans were slaughtered there and what was the response by the West?
@wpi97 This comment thread is about the government of Iran that was toppled by the CIA in the 50's, but thanks anyway. - kooft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ BoofMan
"They've hated all things 'western' for centuries, it's at the core of their beliefs, to bring down the west and covert everyone to Islam. There is no peace with these people. They have always hated us and always will. The best defense is a good offense or as General Patton said,"
Yet another utter load of crap. Modern Iran was actually _very_ Western. Even after the CIA installed the Shah, it was still Western. Unfortunately the Shah abused his power and was the catalyst for the Islamic Revolution, which despise Western influence. Don't believe me? Well here's some pictures and advertisements of 60's & 70's Iran. If it weren't for the Farsi script, you wouldn't be able to tell it was outside of Europe.

@wpi97
I won't pretend that Iran isn't extreme or even a wonderful place for Jews, just that Iranians don't go around killing them for fun. In my opinion Saudia Arabia is far more of a threat to US interests that Iran is (look at their general intolerance). The majority of Iranians are West leaning, but aren't represented accurately by the reigning powers. - Azselendor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Clearly Senator Conrad Burns revealed it -- and president bush's secret super uber duper Iraq plan- after having a single beer.

I'm more interested in supporting my country than a party.
@wpi
1. Iraq had no WMDs.
Most likely no nukes, but chemical and biological weapons could have been moved to Syria.
Stop listening to Hannity. There is no evidence to support this.
4. Hussein was bottled up
Yes, but for how long? Keeping someone like that contained also takes resources. For some reason nobody seems to try to estimate the cost of US military presence in the region just to keep him bottled up.
The war is far more expensive than the containment was. Further, the costs of that action were shared with others, unlike those of this war.
6. The Muslim world has genuine grievances against the US' policies in the Middle East.
They should also have genuine grievances against their own totalitarian governments, who destroy political freedom and stifle economic growth.
Like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, whom we support?
Not to mention the British and the French, who have drawn the boundaries between the middle eastern countries, which is the root cause of many of the problems.
Agreed.
7. The US spends as much money on defense as the rest of the world combined.
Maybe that is why there has not been a war on US mainland in over a century?
Maybe the fact that we have oceans on both sides and every other civilized nation on the planet exhausted themselves militarily twice in the 20th century has something to do with this.
9. Politicians of certain flavors have always been fond of making their citizen scared, because scared people are easy to control. Today's "islamofascist" was yesterday's Communist and yesteryear's anarchist. Not to say that each of these groups did not pose a real threat, but that each of these threats was exaggerated and played for political gain.
Believe me, you do not want to live in a Communist country. Or in a Muslim state with Sharia law.
Agreed. But the idea that a few tens of thousands of radical Islamists are going to fundamentally threaten America is silly. - mirzmaster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8You people must have missed the last paragraph of the article:
"The administration is reaping its own whirlwind after Iraq," said the intelligence source. "For 50 years the US preferred stability over legitimacy in the Middle East and now it's got neither. It's a situation replete with ironies."
How, again, does interfering in the affairs of others benefit anyone in the long run? Seems to me this is one of the primary reasons that the Middle East is in disarray in the first place (other factors include lack of unity, infighting, backstabbing amongst the Middle Eastern states, and of course the injustices perpetrated by Israel).
How, pray tell, does pitting Middle Eastern state against Middle Eastern state benefit anyone, except to help the current American policy-makers fulfill their twisted ambitions? - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3awesome! now look at this website...www.blockedyou.com
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ghost Recon style, now were talking.
- ominpotent123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7has the EU declared a single real threat as an enemy since its existence? pretty sure the third reich would have been in the "possible ally" category
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10There was a funny sign held up at one of the San Fran protest rallies against Israel last summer. It said "Thank You San Francisco. We'll Kill You Last. Praise Allah!"
- BOOFMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8@Lyph4
You know, it's kinda hard to use diplomacy when the other side is bent on your destruction, but go ahead, do your best Neville Chamberlain. - kooft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just because some Muslims are extreme and violent doesn't mean that Bush _didn't_ make a huge mistake in Iraq.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Have to start a few more wars before he leaves office, way to go!
- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Yes, let them decide to support terrorism. See where that gets them.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think you meant the afghan-soviet war. and yes, blowback from covert operations does come back to on us sooner or later.
- corvin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So.... let's get this straight....
Bush just publicly approved the secret plan to go after hezbollah....
I wonder if they know....... - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"wait........ it's on digg, yet it is top secret?"
More importantly, i thought there was some sort of ACT that said the CIA CANNOT support anti-government organizations in foreign lands. Or is that more of a the CIA cannot actively take place in a government coup d'estat (sp). - Bizdorph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this is a covert CIA operation, why is it international news?
Bush had better be praying that nobody in Lebanon can read or speak a word of English, otherwise the cat's out of the bag.
But what else could you epect from a Republican president? - jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Diesel:
At risk of picking at such things, are you aware that the "blunt end" of a cruse missile is the exhaust side? The other end isn't exactly pointy, not like an AIM-120, but if I had to select the "blunt end" in would be the back.
The more you know, the more you can pick apart other people's comments for totally irrelevant points! Yay! - alexology, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't this how a tiny little group called al-Qaeda got primary funding...
- sotopheavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why is Bush still our President? Seriously! It's less of a secret than this (alleged) campaign that he is not leading us in a direction that we want to go. There isn't a "No President left behind" program in America!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Where did all the NYT's headlines come from over the past few years? Someone, somewhere is actively trying to undermine Bush. There is no doubt about it.
- PinkTacoDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like all other religions with "end of the world-return of god" predictions it's the stupid followers that buy into that crap. Why? Because they are the desperate and uneducated. The leaders just use it for clout. Once the leaders get their power and money, they start turning into the greedy people the seem to hate so much, they will ultimately not push that hard for the end of the world as they have every reason to live. This religion is no different than any of the other religion when it comes to "the end of the world...blah blah..." Education and jobs will take care of the extremists much like communism.
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or maybe old ***** face can start world war 3 before he leaves office!
- chatty82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A secret plot ordering the bombing of an escalator stairwell at Boston's South
Station bus/train terminus, in revenge for the bombing of a mosque ordered by Kerry, was retarded. Kerry doesn't take the public transporation, and he wasn't hurt by a bombing in the city he lives in.
He goes around in limosenes and private conveyances.
The racist philosphy that the U. S. is fighting sems to include a system of punishments for the relatives of criminals instead of the criminals themselves. A brother is taken to Albania to take care of donkeys because his sister comits crimes in another state, and a father is taken as a hostage to the Ukraine because his daughter shoots the customers in a bar she works at (that he owns). Maybe these people forgot about all their relatives when they went to the big city to get differentiated! I know I did. Get the guilty party, HEPZBOLLAH, the people in the Boston terminal are not responsible for the actions of Kerry!
When your dealing with the United States, we are all different and we don't stay at home with "Mummy" (or "Da-dee") in the racist collective all our lives. Taking another member of the criminals family a hostage or torturing them to see if they were the ones that ordered the crime, is the retarded. system of racism. We don't want that here. -
