- IrishJoe, on 07/09/2009, -2/+67I'm waiting for McDonald's to follow up with an ad showing Mohammad and Moses eating McPork Sandwiches.
- thebigredcat, on 07/09/2009, -5/+43A mo' ham ad? Ha!
(Note to muslims out there. This is a joke. Please don't kill me for defaming the religion of peace. thank you.) - tjdegroat, on 07/09/2009, -3/+30With the amount of money being pumped into most big companies' diversity departments/initiatives, this kind of basic research shouldn't have been a problem for BK to complete before pushing out an ad campaign. You'd almost think the company was aiming for exactly this response and the ensuing free advertising. But ... nah, that's not how these things work, right?
- anexanhume, on 07/09/2009, -5/+32Come on Burger King, EVERYONE KNOWS Lakshmi goes for the Big Mac. Slander at its finest.
- scrivener212, on 07/09/2009, -6/+26Wasn't there anyone in-house who was smart enough to say, "Ya know, people tend to get pissed off when you use their gods for commercial stuff. Maybe we should just let this one go, guys"?
They're lucky it's Hindus. Other folks might be inclined to make their feelings known with a Molotov cocktail. - Choplifter, on 07/09/2009, -4/+18Doesn't look like a whopper to me.
- str3ama, on 07/09/2009, -2/+15They should be allowed to run the ad (as they were), but yeah I do think it is offensive. BK lies to raise attention with provocative and edgy ads (it's part of their marketing plan aimed to entice a core demographic of males between 16-24). They used to compete with McDonald's for families and for kids, but they realized it's a safer and more sensible bet to get the male demographic. They switched their ads globally to reflect this about 3-4 years ago.
But this really is designed to be offensive, they would never parody Jesus crucified to a burger with the line "He died for deliciousness" or "Salvation lies within a burger" because the likelihood of offending someone in their demographic is considerable, it also helps that a good chunk of their earnings aren't coming from Hindus since they don't eat beef (albeit I'm sure fries and shakes don't quite compare to the earnings made through burgers). - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -2/+15Buddy Christ would have totally sold out to BK.
- SirBruce, on 07/09/2009, -0/+13Actually the Filet-O-Fish was offered specifically for observing Catholics.
- boberto, on 07/09/2009, -1/+13That doesn't look like a burger in the poster... looks more like a ham sandwich.
- Quenlin, on 07/09/2009, -1/+13This is like that ham that's "Kosher for Chanukah".
- Talphin, on 07/09/2009, -2/+14Welcome to the human species. We eat other animals.
- scrivener212, on 07/09/2009, -2/+11It's this kind of thinking that has maybe kept your Diggs at zero, dude.
- Khanvalescent, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9I'm a 13th century serf, and I find it deeply offensive that Burger King is making money off The King.
- nateyo, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9We also mate with other species and ethnics.
- enantiodromia, on 07/09/2009, -4/+13in an unexpected consequence of viewing this ad, i'd rather munch on a hot Indian girl, than a whopper.
om nom nom omm omm ohmmm oohhhmmmm aum - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -3/+11Let's just remember that there's no such thing as bad publicity.
- hoju7887, on 07/09/2009, -2/+10I thought it was pretty common knowledge that cows are sacred in hinduism? Well, common knowledge for the type of people employed in the marketing/advertising department of multi-national food chains who, for the most part, are college educated.
This was definately not a "mistake". - mule007, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7"He died for deliciousness"
Best line of the day. - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Hey Ganesh, want a whopper?
"Please do not offer my god a whopper"
No offence Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out taking a whiz.
"Mr. Simpson, please pay for your services and get out and come again!" - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+8Mmmmm. That IS a tasty burger!
- asgardshill, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Dugg up because I've seen it. It was actually turkey but you were supposed to serve it with pineapple chunks and it was shaped like a picnic ham.
Kosher ham. What next - mosques with a bar and pole dancing? - carlos259, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7FTA: "Some devotees would even be offended by the inclusion of onions which they believe inflame passions."
Maybe it's just me, but I can't recall the last time I looked at an onion as a food for passion - WaCkYmAk, on 07/09/2009, -3/+9If BK did their research, they would've known to have Lakshmi advertising the dollar menu items and Lord Shiva with a burger shot in each of His 4-6 hands.
- FXNGLAS, on 07/09/2009, -3/+9Looks like BK can't have it their way.
- sooperdooper, on 07/09/2009, -1/+7Charlei Brown
- theradical, on 07/09/2009, -1/+6Big deal, not their target market anyway.
- enantiodromia, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4you still believe that?
dump your personal info on 4chan, and see how much good publicity you get - Anand999, on 07/09/2009, -2/+6Assuming it really is a whopper (with a beef patty), I'd say that puts it in a different class than the examples you gave. Eating meat isn't really forbidden in Hinduism, just not encouraged. However, eating beef is taboo, and using a Hindu religious figure to promote something that is taboo to Hinduism is just plain stupid on the part of the ad agency that did this.
- graemee, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Yes, they are made from Holy Cows.
- Craig304958, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4@cristinamk - maybe Jesus wouldn't mind but his fan club sure would
- UV0001, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3@lemur
That pretty much excludes all food. Plants were alive too before you ate them. - hitkaiser, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4"Eating meat isn't really forbidden in Hinduism"
It is around religious figures, or at least "taboo" (as you put it) to eat meat in front of images of deities. In fact, putting meat in front of an image of a deity is considered a "sin".
"using a Hindu religious figure to promote something that is taboo to Hinduism is just plain stupid on the part of the ad agency that did this"
The point I was trying to get across with the examples was that the attitude the country has towards everything Indian is about commercializing its name and image. Rarely do they think about the "feelings" of Hindus or in fact any other minority. - NoseSplash, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Check out Burger King's official apology here. http://bit.ly/ERto9
- kuzotz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3not the same thing. In Hindu religion cows are sacred, and to show one of their god's eating something sacred is crazy. Also in hindu being a human sucks because you can't kill anything or you offend some kind of God XD.
- sooperdooper, on 07/09/2009, -3/+6This was in Spain. Stop whining.
- NoseSplash, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Check out Burger King's official apology

- Peleus, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3McDonalds has had issues with frying their fries in non-vegetarian oil... they did apologize for that I think.
- mohawkmoose12, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3way to be a douche
- artfiend77, on 07/09/2009, -3/+6@scarecrow2k6
You might want to stop jacking off with sandpaper dude, it's wrecking your charisma. - Craig304958, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3That's it! I'm reporting you to the FSM. We'll see how you like THEM meatballs.
- thepeacemaker, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4>Burger King has been forced to apologise to Hindus
They were not "forced" to apologize. Burger King made a business decision to not lose business in India and decided this bizarre ad was not worth the loss of business elsewhere. - themastersb, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Another "What were they thinking?" moment from Burger King. It's pretty much the same thing as if they were to show Jesus with a Whopper.
- SarcasticPirate, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3It's like I'm really watching Fox and Friends.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Even grade school kids in the US are taught that cows are sacred in India. We have social studies classes.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3Now where is freedom of expression?
- EndouOuto, on 07/09/2009, -5/+7***** em, it's not like many hindus eat beef anyway
- mohawkmoose12, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2well as long as you know you're a douche then i guess its ok
