- DIGGerPhelpsND, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Watch the documentary on bbc.co.uk
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/default.stm - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This makes complete sense. Out here in California the Catholic church heirarchy (particularly Cardinal Mahoney) were involved in an at least four decades long, probably longer, organized campaign of protecting and cleaning up after child molestor priests. And he's still doing it to this day! They figured it was better than letting word get out so they made some silly organizational justification about being able to 'reform' them even as they quietly shipped them around from parish to parish after each incident. Nor is this unique - it was replicated again and again across the country. It's unthinkable that this didn't go all the way up to the top in at least some form.
- CaptainKrontos, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Religion is such a sham.
- hhOwArdrOarKk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11The Republican party and the Catholic church have a lot to cover up these days. Especially the pedophile thing.
- Livewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a documentary that's actually going to be in theaters about this:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/deliverusfromevil/ - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not just today but yesterday and the day before and before that... The catholic church has been covering up the "molestation of children" for a VERY long time. People I went to grade school with were molested by a priest, it took 15 years before they convicted the sick f@ck. That was 25 years ago, and just a few years ago another priest in a local parish was shipped off to California after getting busted fondling little boys.
Let these priest marry and it wouldn't cure the problem but it sure would drive away all the priests who join the catholic church so they can have easy access to children!
okay... rant mode off... and you wouldn't believe how many curse words I deleted before hitting submit. - pinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Haven't seen the documentary yet (and it it's like other so-called documentaries backed by the BBC, I doubt I will), but that's beside the point...
If these allegations had been made about Islam, I wonder how much of the BBC would be left by now...
Having watched documentaries from around the world ,The BBC's are among the best if not the best in the world
Trying watching The Power of Nightmares - Halllmark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, it's about time we found out where the coverup leads and other details.
Many suspected this went all the way to the top. I used to tell people there was no proof, only logical conclusions. Now we know.
The BBC is excellent for content and presentation, as always. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Isidore
These priests JOINED the catholic church to have easy access to children. They are evil hypocritical low life pond scum. There is no other profession where a male has more control over children than a priest/minister. If they were allowed to actually marry then it would not attract so many pedo's.
I suggest you stop being so apologetic and realize this has probably been going on for hundreds of years and not just since the 60's. - Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You can't read *or* write, can you?
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Someone's going to need a thicker-walled pope-mobile...
- Leviathan777, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Isn't it funny - Rush Limbaugh was just comparing Rep. Foley (R - Florida) to the Pope's comments about Muslims. Well, it turns out Foley, the Republican House leadership, the Catholic Church, and the Pope do have something in common; they are paedophiles and the organizations that protect them.
Good point, Rush! - AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Benedict is a former Nazi. And as one man said in that trailer (see LiveWire's post), the church has to make a good image. Though it would seem a better image to immediately strip any clergy who hurt children and turn them into the cops. Does their god not want the children to be protected?
- Isidore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@TheKillDoctor
I make no apologies for these scum. Child sex abuse has probably been around for millenia. Jesus' statement (Mark 9:42) about those who be better "thrown into the sea with a great millstone round their neck" might refer to the child abusers of his day.
Neither do I excuse any cover ups. I simply point out that this is a feature of most institutions, not uniquely the Catholic Church. All institutions can learn from their own and other's mistakes and should not be complacent.
I agree that some of these men became priests in order to have access to children, just as some men become teachers, scout leaders, social workers, paediatricians, school bus drivers etc. to get access to children.
My point is MOST PAEDOPHILES ARE MARRIED and most child sex abuse happens within the extended family; so married priests, married teachers or married scout leaders would not give children the protection they need. - Isidore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Nowadays in the UK each parish and diocese has a Child Protection Officer, who is a layperson, often with a social work, medical or legal background to whom complaints can be made. They are instructed to act independantly and to alert the civil authorities immediately if any crime is alleged.
Child abuse is a terrible sin, and priests who do this sin against the Church as well as the children.
One of the 2 'secret' documents dates from 1962 and refers to procedures for investigating alleged manipulation by priests in the confessional not specifically child abuse. All corporations and institutions have confidentiality procedures for investigating complaints. Most families and institutions do not wash their dirty laundry in public.
Until about 20yrs ago in the West paedophilia was not generally recognised by the general public as a problem. Most state run institutions had the same sort of denial problems with abusers. The ability of some paedophiles to manipulate children and adults and abuse processes is now well known whether it is church procedures or constitutional safeguards.
It is all well and good to say the civil authorities should be informed at the earliest opportunity. This will work in the US, UK and most democracies. But what if you live in a country where the church was/is persecuted eg Soviet Union, China, North Korea, most muslim countries or countries with a tradition of bribing the police? Who would investigate things better? Would you trust those police?
In the interest of protecting children we should realise that most sexual abuse happens within families. Most paedophiles are married. Celibacy does not cause paedophilia. Have any of you (single) men ever felt extreme sexual frustration? What did you do? (a) Go solo, (b) hire a prostitute or (c) spend months grooming a child for sex. - thepeacemaker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6He needs to clean up his own shop before maligning other religions.

- JamesShiell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3So you're saying that, due to the lack of acceptance of free speech in much of the Islamic world, we should tread carefully and do our best not to expose anything that might embarrass or question the major religions?
Seems just a little dodgy... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4now did benddick also molest a child????
