- mictlanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29The man has died but the musician died a long time ago. The man was an usung genius.
"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here.
And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song. " - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29"Pink Floyd? The music still exists?"
Oh shut up. Pink Floyd are probably the greatest rock band in all of history. I don't mean like your silly little Iron Maidens, or Kiss or whatever - they were/are a mega superstar rock band. They were stars like real stars should be stars, their music just came from a whole different place completely.
I have seen things and felt things and experienced things, listening to Floyd that have been so beyond my common experience that I just do not have words to describe them.
I feel so robbed sometimes that they don't make more music these days - as despite their personal differences, the world deserves the amazing music that they are collectively capable of producing.
I feel sorry for Sid, but selfishly I do hope that this inspires them to work together one last time. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27"Far away across the fields, the tolling of an iron bell"
R.I.P Syd. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23It is not that people did not care to find him. Everyone respected his privacy and let him be alone, as he wished.
He may have stopped producing music "decades ago" but the music he produced was timeless. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Shine on you crazy diamond...
You will be missed Syd. - n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Actually "Wish You Were Here" was a tribute album for him.
- H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Really? Have you looked at digg's front page recently?
I'm not complaining, but the majority of the stories are old videos, old articles, or duplicate stories.
But that's neither here no there. Rest in Peace, Syd. At least we finally know where you are. - leehodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10There is no other day

Shine on you crazy diamond... - warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I believe that Barrett walked from his home to the studio where the band was recording wish you were here with shaved eyebrows. In the Wall movie ol' Pink shaves his eyebrows so there is at least something of Syd in the wall......
- mikolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Roger was his birthname, Syd was a nickname.
- grendelboogie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Piper at the Gates of Dawn is still one of my favorite albums.
i've got a mouse
and he doesn't have a house
I don't know why
I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse
"Bike"
Take care, Mr. Barrett,
We'll never see your likes again. - Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Syd was only on the first Floyd album (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn) but he played a big part in their sound. The later album "Wish You Were Here" is dedicated to him. Somehow, during the first listening of the final mix, he wandered into the room.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Didn't piper at the gates of dawn sell like 20 million copy's?
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6More than just a founder of 'Floyd, he was a very close childhood friend with some of them. Imagine your best friend that you grew up with and went through school with and worked with and became famous with, suddenly gets so sick they go away, refuse to see you, and you can't help them, and you know you can never help them. Imagine how helpless you would feel, how you constantly look back and see the signs of the illness that you missed while they were happening, how you beat yourself up over not getting them help sooner, how you feel partly responsible for their illness.
This is the sorrow I hear and feel when I listen to Wish You Were Here and parts of Dark Side of the Moon, and even a little in Animals.
He did more than just launch a band, he formed its musical roots, and gave them an inspiration even when he wasn't part of the band.
RIP, Syd. - Nonsuch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The papers so far are refraining from printing any of the stalker photos of him after he became a recluse. A nice touch of restraint at least.
So long, Roger. - hitchhiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Remember when you were young,
You shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes,
Like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon,
You cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night,
And exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome
With random precision,
Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine! - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The Wall has has more to do with Roger Waters' personal demons.
- AzzuzuSkullpipe, on 01/05/2009, -7/+12You guys do know that Syd was long, long gone from Pink Floyd before Dark Side, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, any of those came out. Gone for years. Not that your comments aren't fitting tributes, but looking at the body of work by The Floyd, as they were known in those days, it's pretty easy to tell to the point at which Syd departed due to diferences in the direction the band was heading and the band evolved without him. Crazy genius, no doubt, emphasis on crazy. Thank god for the crazy geniuses, and he will be sorrowfully missed. May his work live on in his honor.
- zanvann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He'll die when he is forgotten, till then his memory lives on.
- lilzaphod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd like to read where you came up with that......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think they realize that. Wish You Were here was written in tribute to Syd, and people were theorizing that Dark Side, and The Wall both were to some degree as well.
David Gilmour even mentioned 'our poor lost brother Syd' when they did the British music awards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He got his nickname from a Cambridge drummer who was named Sid Barrett. He started calling himself 'Syd' in tribute.
- d39brown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4An integral part of the early Floyd, his ultimate contribution was inspiring Roger Waters lyrics and opening a position with The Floyd for David Gilmour upon his departure. A tortured soul who combined schizophrenia with heavy drug use, he didn't find the secret too soon but got rather lost in a delusional hell.
I hope he has found the peace he deserves in the hereafter. - heidavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Syd Barret was an icon of mine when i first got heavily into music. I remember hearing that he once put blue dye crystals in his hair, so they would melt in the heat of stage lights and melt down his face and i remember how I thought that was so cool! Pink Floyd were an inspiration for me.
Shine On, You Crazy Diamond. - warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I would argue that Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and the Wall were all about Syd to some degree.

- jayboyd1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wouldn't You Miss Me?
Oh where are you now
Pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?
When I was alone you promised a stone from your heart
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please lift a hand
I'm only a person
Whose armbands beat on his hands hang tall
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?
The poppy birds way
Swing twigs coffee brands around
Brandish her wand with a fea-*a*-athery tongue
My head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
Please, please, please lift a hand
I'm only a person with Eskimo chain
I tattooed my brain
Don't you miss me?
Couldn't you miss me at all?
- Syd Barrett - jriggall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are references in Dark Side as well.
Brain Damage – “And if the band your in starts playing different tunes, I’ll see you on the Dark Side of the Moon” - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From "Dark Globe" on "Madcap Laughs":

Even though he did have a tattooed brain, we will surely miss him.
RIP, Syd. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BTW, which one is Pink? That would be Syd.
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jrigall
of course the line "there's someone in my head and it's not me" probably has to do with him too.
The Wall is Water's baby and is all about him. - astroid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first time I ever ingested psilocybin I was sitting in the woods on top of a hill watching the sky with piper of the gates of dawn on. I'll never forget that night. Words can't describe.
- trumpeter617, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lets just take a moment to think where we would be musically without Syd founding Pink Floyd.
I would just like to say thanks to him, and RIP. - mikebritton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A sad, sad day. Think of his legacy though -- more grandiose and far-reaching than most people understand. RIP I love you Syd.
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So many bands who were influenced...Beatles, Bowie, Marc Bolan, Who, Cream, a thousand psychedelic bands and even the Flaming Lips...rip.

/fitting tribute - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We will always have his music, most men never have a chance to reach as many people as he had, the Madcap will always be laughing.
- marius404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If any of you Pink Floyd fans have never listened to some of Syd's solo stuff, what better time to go out and find it, or if you do listen to it share it with a friend who has never heard it before.
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I definitely call BS on cwoolf34's theory.
No-one forces LSD down anyone's throat. If they end up in psychosis after taking it, you take moral and legal responsibility for their care. Not funny.
LSD is something very personal and should be treated with care (respect?). I don't think Syd was that kind of person - he used to like taking a variety of recreational drugs under his own volition. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2His name was Roger Keith Barrett...
- cjoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3RIP Old Friend, RIP

That sounds a little morbid. - paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Other band members said Syd laid the golden egg that pink floyd hatched their success off of.
- Reezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess you could say this was his Last acid trip.....
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RIP
Keep on shining.......... - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So OK, what we need now is a tribute concert/world tour and/or album...
Lol, we can all dream I guess....
Soon the other band members will go to and that just won't be possible any more... - digmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3...Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here...
Rest in Peace, Syd! - jayboyd1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Shine on, Syd. R.I.P.

He will be missed by those who appreciated his music. His music is unusual, quirky, and not likely to be very popular with the masses. - foleymon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 A pebble that stood alone
