- Takuza, on 01/03/2008, -19/+99Oh yes, Boycot a sporting event. That will make them reconsider their entire government.
- SilentSpyder, on 01/03/2008, -10/+88I still don't understand why China is our friend and Cuba isn't.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -22/+74Both the US and China have leaders willing to trample human rights for the almighty dollar/yuan. Consider it already boycotted here.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -15/+53i was already planning on it
- JustJoe4Life, on 01/03/2008, -0/+36You fools, the submitter is obviously trying to clear the path to winning Olympic Gold, I for one won't be taken in and shall see you at the starting line sir!
- biiscit, on 01/03/2008, -6/+33you guys are morons. it's okay, the 99% of the world who don't use digg will continue as planned.
- whataboutdave, on 01/03/2008, -7/+32Go watch a documentary on the Tienanmen Square massacre. No, America and China do not equally violate civil liberties and basic human rights.
- 10001110101, on 01/03/2008, -3/+28Having spoken with a number of homeless people in Atlanta, let me assure you: it isn't just China.
- Daniel591992, on 01/03/2008, -0/+18Only four billion people... ( http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/athens/new ... )
- nigelmansell, on 01/03/2008, -5/+22should we boycott the Superbowl because the US government is also trampling OUR constitutional rights?
- CrimsonBlur, on 01/03/2008, -2/+19All cities make efforts to relocate the homeless further away from popular tourist areas like stadiums, downtown, etc. If you think it's only the communist Chinese government that does things like that you have no idea how cities are run, especially when international events are being held. The Chinese may be doing it more forcibly, but there really isn't much difference in the end.
- NameNotInUse, on 01/03/2008, -2/+18There are about 1.3 Trillion reasons
- PorkFluff, on 01/03/2008, -2/+18Come to Canada for the 2010 Winter Olympics instead. We have lots and lots of pot for you all!
- nymphetamine, on 01/03/2008, -1/+16I think you're lost.
- addicted68098, on 01/03/2008, -9/+23China is a young America, at one post colonial time we were a mirror image of what China is today.
A nation like China needs time to mature. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -4/+18That video is insane. There is the footage of the Chinese Army invading some village to steal land at 4:00.
- sixsidepentagon, on 01/03/2008, -1/+15What about Tibet?
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+13Boycotting will solve nothing (Just like when Jimmy Carter had the US boycott the USSR Olympics) Obviously you dont understand the Chinese or the purpose of the Olympics. The best way to stop the abuses and the best way has always been to bring them to light. The Chinese like to control tourists but will be incapable with so many speaking so many different languages. They can not afford an incident so the free speech of the tourists and of those Chinese brave enough will be everywhere. China's human rights abuses, environmental disaster zones, their horrible air and water pollution will finally be front and center on the world stage. China is trying to prepare but are so out of touch with the world and how the world views them. The different branches of they're government are paranoid of each other that military, municipal and political branches are all making preparations in secret from each other. They are spending so much time on correcting chinglish signs and as of yet made no preparations to on how to allow journalists to cover the Olympics on the internet without lifting their internet restrictions. They can no longer simply confiscate film. There will be no way to stop photos and videos from being taken and downloaded.
As of last year, a friend teaching in China told me not a single student in his College class had heard of the Tienanmen Square Massacre. Surely they will once hundreds of reporters from around the world are looking to interview the man infront of the tank, to find out what happened to him, if he is still alive.
Unless of course they dont go... Boycotting solves nothing. China has let it's people starve, they will not free them just because childish Americans "activists" threaten to not go and spend their money. - ponyfreak, on 01/03/2008, -1/+13why don't you just stop buying Chinese products...that has a much larger effect than not watching a sporting event.
- lennon2600, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12@addicted68098
Uh....China's a really really ***** old country, fool. China was "great" long before America had its grand industrial revolution. Perhaps you skipped that little bitty lesson in history class? - noahhoward, on 01/03/2008, -6/+16You mean the Iraqis that are being murdered by other Iraqis, and Islamists, in the name of fighting for their freedom? Funny how they kill more Iraqis than Americans.
- TurboTex, on 01/03/2008, -4/+13China owns us, Cuba doesn't.
- noahhoward, on 01/03/2008, -1/+10Or Taiwan?
- greenlight2001, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8Well, I'm still gonna compete, but I'm not gonna like it!
- dangdude, on 04/15/2009, -1/+8bad idea, the more taste of the west and the freedoms we enjoy the more their own people will want it. revolution must come from within.
- noahhoward, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10The olympics aren't serious competitive sport? What not enough hot sweaty man on man contact for your liking?
- PorkFluff, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7If Cuba could crank out Nikes and Mattel toys for next to nothing, they'd be your buddies. America never let Communism stand in the way of capitalism.
- Dundasbro, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9Amused Australian digger is amused.
- rz8472, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Actually mass pro-democracy demonstrations before the 1988 Seoul Games was pivotal in breaking the power of the autocratic regime in South Korea. Rather than see the image of the Games be tarnished, those in power decided to step aside to allow democratic reforms to occur.
I'm not saying this will happen in China, but I see the logic in tying the games in with human rights. - anderzole, on 01/03/2008, -13/+19I heard the Chineese Govt. is herding the homeless to various out of the way locales to make sporting locations seem "nicer". Also, the olympics, I think, are way past their sell date anyways, regardless of location. It will definitely be interesting, though, to see how the various political storylines will playout in Beijing.
- MattnJax, on 01/03/2008, -16/+22China is very screwed up. Human rights, animal rights, restricted freedoms. Glad I don't live there. Will I boycott it. I say I'll try, but everytime the Olympics come around I end up watching some of the events, but this is definitely the first time, in my lifetime, that the Olympics have been hosted by such a bad country. So maybe I'll try.
- meatmcguffin, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6She's your queen too, mate :P
Amused British digger is amused. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7Usually when someone says that a country is bad, they are referring to the government. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that most Chinese people probably think that their government is very bad.
- Ryoze, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9I think you severely underestimate the Chinese people's desire for a good games. Unlike the US where the games are more of a local thing, this ended up being a huge endeavor for the entire country (blame that on the whole communist things).
Besides, the country has changed since 1989. The country is more prosperous and the people are happier. Sure, its not ideal, but the average Chinese citizen doesn't give a rats ass. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7and probably less than 1% of the people who read this article will actually boycott the Olympics.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7Blacks in America are doing fine and in some ways have advantages over whites in modern America.
If you are talking about America's sordid past, fine. But remember America has always been one of the freest societies in the world and most of the social progress that the world has seen in the past 230 years wouldn't have occurred had it not been for America. And why does everyone always seem to forget the plight of the Irish and Chinese immigrants to the US and A? - nymphetamine, on 01/03/2008, -4/+9Just like all the other Olympics.
- swordedge, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5no, he means trillion and he is probably low. The Chinese finance our debt.
- orca94, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5No, it's not.
- shazzb0t, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5Dumbest statement I've ever read on digg.
- minoss, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7Spoken as only a person who has never lived in China could. I know this because you wouldn't be posting this if you lived there.
- aznkidx, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7Heres the thing. Those homeless people will have to leave the city due to a new ordinance issued by the chinese police due to high crime rates and pollutants caused by them. The US govt also do these things, but they were never reported (the southern taste for roadkill and other types of animals they hunt) . Those people who are boycotting.. i doubt it will be possible. Commercials for the Olympics and basically every sports channels supports it.
Laws are laws and people have to follow them no matter what the censorship that or taste for food a country has. The United States did away with privacy and habius corpus and they have NSA spying on everyone. I don't see the difference - Codename46, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5The Chinese government takes the 2008 Olympics VERY SERIOUSLY and I have no doubt that they won't let such a "joyous festivity" be tarnished by a bunch of foreign and domestic protesters. Hell, CCTV news started heavily broadcasting the progress of the setup since 2005. I was watching CCTV 4 an hour ago and the news was showing a bunch of parade rehearsals and such (remember that the state owns the media).
What will happen is that a bunch of American, European and native Mainland Chinese protesters will do their thing in Beijing, police will attempt suppress it with haste at all costs, and the state media will not report it. It makes sense. They certainly don't want foreign news media to focus more on human rights than the games themselves.
Now I don't call myself an expert on Chinese relations and politics but I've visited Beijing every 3-4 years and in my humble opinion the change is only an illusion. Beijing is only cleaner because of the Olympics. In 2009, the air will be flourishing with your friendly neighborhood carcinogens and pollutants. - innocentsinner, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5try $
- Talonkarrde, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4That would be a weak limb to go on out.
I'm Chinese, born there but raised in the US, though I go back quite often. They don't think it's 'bad', anymore than Americans think the U.S. is 'bad'. That is to say, they dislike it, but they don't see any real change happening anytime soon. Moreover, most of the government's broad sweeping actions have little effect on ordinary citizens, so there's no great outcry. - ShrimpCrackers, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5Bugsy187: That is utter bull it turns out, because Saddam was abusing the Oil for Food program to build his own palaces while his people starved to death. I remember people giving Bill Clinton a ton of flak for that, and now it turns out he was right.
- kittenman, on 01/03/2008, -5/+9what the ***** is the boycott crap!? why do we have to link such a historical sporting event to things like human rights, animal rights? Dose the Chinese sporting spirit somehow rigged by those factors? And Marion Jones taking steroids not? Or the whole MLB playing on steroids not? Just do yourself a favor, make things separated, and haven't you enlightened by Ron Paul that, "we have to be friends of all nations, and don't interfere with internal affairs" ? Don't be influenced by these international interest groups!
- tymekpavel, on 01/03/2008, -3/+7From the Olympic Committee's Website:
"The Games have always brought people together in peace to respect universal moral principles.
The upcoming Games will feature athletes from all over the world and help promote the Olympic spirit." - http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/index_uk.asp
The Olympics aren't just a sporting event, they are a symbol of peace, good moral principles, and of course, human rights. They are supposed to unite people despite what might be happening in the world. If China can't reflect that kind of message, they aren't fit to host the Olympics. -
