- chrisk9, on 02/22/2009, -23/+390"The weapon was a youth model 20-gauge shotgun, designed for use by children, that belonged to the boy, according to investigators." -- What the hell??!!?
- sockpuppets, on 02/22/2009, -1/+189Also good for midget hunters.
- nomadxx7, on 02/22/2009, -6/+151Yeah they make children weapons for hunting. So that way he's not holding a 12 gauge and blowing his shoulder off. Sounds silly and makes it sound childish but they do have those weapons and its usually for the younger hunting crowd to get involved in hunting.
- Biscuitz, on 02/22/2009, -3/+117I'm slightly confused with the way Digg swings these days.
If any of you are still following the whole 14 year old Kenny Glenn cat abuse *****, you'll know what I'm speaking of.
Everyone was and still is outraged that the little cat abusing ***** isn't being tried as an adult ( I know I am mad about it ) for what he did, but you all are outraged at an 11 year old being tried as an adult for for murder? I'm not sure I understand your way of thinking at all. - nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -22/+115I had a youth 20 gauge when I was young. I used it for hunting. Not shooting people. Don't blame the gun, if the kid didn't have a gun he probably would have used a knife.
- nomadxx7, on 02/22/2009, -10/+98Why?
Up here in Vermont you can get a lifetime hunting permit for a newborn baby up to 1 year old. A lot of people up here hunt and teach their children how to respect a weapon and that it is dangerous. Education is better than shielding them. - franklymister, on 02/22/2009, -2/+88Is that the father's girlfriend in the picture? She looks like a teenager.
- inactive, on 02/22/2009, -3/+75@sockpuppets
For the hunting of midgets or for midgets who like to hunt? - franklymister, on 02/22/2009, -16/+83I disagree, Turtle.
You may not have grown up somewhere with an outdoor / hunting culture, but in places like Iowa, where I'm from, it's very appropriate.
We learned gun safety in school, much like you'd learn driver's ed. As a result, kids had much more knowledge about, and respect for, firearms, and we didn't have any of the gun problems that urban areas had.
Children should learn about guns at an appropriate age, just like sex education, and driver's ed. There's always an age that is too young, of course, but just saying "children shouldn't be using guns" sounds like the thing a person who had no experience with guns would say. - RainStreet, on 02/22/2009, -2/+65They'll withhold his name because he is a juvenile, yet they'll charge him as an adult... That makes perfect sense.
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2009, -4/+67As a pro-gun Liberal I think the law should be extremely harsh for irresponsible gun owners. The father should be tried for manslaughter as well. It was his responsibility to lockup these guns. It's fine to let the kid learn to use a gun, hunt, target practice, etc but you can't just let him keep the thing under his bed or something. It has to be supervised.
- threemagic, on 02/22/2009, -13/+67Can't vote, can't drink, can't have sex, can't join the military... but can have a gun to hunt...
ok. - vagrantwade, on 02/22/2009, -4/+56I had a youth 20 gauge at that age. I haven't shot anyone.
YET!!! - Marchello5, on 02/22/2009, -6/+52Sad story.
Strange world we live in - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -11/+52It's a lot harder to kill someone with a knife. (although still fairly easy)
- InorganicMatter, on 02/22/2009, -2/+41I had a Ruger .22 at 11 years of ago. No big deal.
The bigger question was why the dad didn't have it locked up? - Devaney, on 02/22/2009, -18/+57"Under Pennsylvania law, anyone over the age of 10 accused of murder or homicide is charged as an adult. If convicted, the boy faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, Bongivengo said."
an 11 yr old is charged as an adult?! that's pretty messed up--he's obviously got serious mental problems... - franklymister, on 02/22/2009, -3/+37As opposed to an adult who murders someone? They're ok in the head, then?
- nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -0/+33What?
- nomadxx7, on 02/22/2009, -1/+34I love how the article says they are trying him as an adult due to the laws on the books yet they can't release his name due to him being a juvenile. Plus honestly what causes an 11 year old to do this?
- feliks2, on 02/22/2009, -0/+29Its in preparation for the triplets hes probably going to father by age 12.
- nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -5/+34Also it seems nobody is RTFA. She was found in bed, she was probably sleeping. Are you trying to say that if an 11 year-old is holding a knife while your sleeping you'll instantly wake up?
- Biscuitz, on 02/22/2009, -4/+32Remember mister cat abuser, Kenny Glenn? Everyone was, and still is outraged that he's not getting tried as an adult over the abuse of the cats, but people are outraged over an 11 year old being tried as an adult for murder?
That makes complete ***** sense. - webwulf, on 02/22/2009, -7/+33I'm sorry, but the world is not as cut-and-dry as you would like it to be.
- Forgorin, on 02/23/2009, -2/+26Where I come from (South Africa) The gun is either in the control of the owner or locked up in a safe. If the gun is used in a crime, as in your 11 year old son killing your girlfriend, then you were not in control of you firearm. You are responsible.
Moral of the story. Keep it locked away in a safe. Stops people getting at it. - Y0tsuya, on 02/22/2009, -4/+27So...does this mean a priest can touch him and not get arrested for child molestation?
- nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -7/+28So if the kid sneaks up behind you while your watching TV and plunges a knife in your neck you'll be alright? There is more than one way for a person to be killed. It's obvious that this kid had problems. Whatever those problems are and what caused them is what is to blame.
- copypastry, on 02/22/2009, -3/+23In an amazing twist, the kid was actually his.
- superterrorizer, on 02/22/2009, -0/+20Some of the most off the wall, ***** insane murders have been committed by very competent people who had no real history of mental illness and were competent enough to stand trial. I don't think you have to be crazy to murder someone.
- kiffen0d, on 02/22/2009, -0/+20Boy you're telling me. Don't know how many times I played Mature Games as a kid and then topped it off with real-life murder.
*****. - inactive, on 02/22/2009, -9/+29I take my eight year old hunting all the time. If you have a problem with that, let me know, I'll adjust my lifestyle to meet your requirements.
- skaryrose, on 02/22/2009, -2/+22In response to hauntedchippy, in my eyes the fault lies with whomever allowed the gun to be accessible to the child, not the inventor of a child's rifle.
- nomadxx7, on 02/22/2009, -2/+20Thanks for the insightful comment.
Guns kill people but locked up guns do nothing. Definitely should have been a locked gun cabinet or something. - bobburn1, on 02/22/2009, -9/+27He planned it. He told a friend of his he was going to do it. That's enough to charge him as an adult. He's smart enough to know what he's doing.
- nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -15/+33I don't really care how old you are. If you take a person's life on purpose you go in the clinker for good. End of story.
- RainStreet, on 02/22/2009, -1/+19I don't have a problem with an 11 year old having a gun for the purpose of hunting with a responsible adult, but there is no way in hell he should be able to gain access to it without supervision. This is another example of people failing immensely at proper firearm storage.
- xB4R7x, on 02/22/2009, -2/+20Dude...
- wastelander, on 02/22/2009, -1/+18As opposed to "designed for killing your stepmother"?
- nomadxx7, on 02/22/2009, -4/+21You can't convince me that you should be allowed to run around shooting animals in 2009. Sorry Jack, there's a grocery store within a 20 mile radius of any given point in this country.
I agree. We shouldn't grow our own vegetables because they are in the grocery store. We shouldn't raise livestock because the grocery store has that too. We shouldn't have flowers because we can get those from a florist. Yep everything is conveniently there for us. How dare people make the decision to hunt for themselves or grow their own food. They should step in line and buy it from the grocery store like everyone else. Geez how inconsiderate it is to maintain animal populations and at the same time get some 100% natural organic meat versus that red-dyed hamburger that may or may not be riddled with BGH.
/s - nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -3/+18Absolutely correct.
- AlexTommo, on 02/22/2009, -1/+16Neglection?
Jealousy? - sockpuppets, on 02/22/2009, -3/+18Yes because this only happens in America.
- bobburn1, on 02/22/2009, -6/+21@Turtle, children need to be taught how to handle guns especially if they're going to be hunting (as was the case with this unfortunate kid) or else you'll have accidents akin to those you see in the commercials.
- icon1985, on 02/22/2009, -11/+25"youth model 20-gauge shotgun, designed for use by children"
that's ***** up. - Chex1229, on 02/22/2009, -3/+17Yes, this wouldn't have happened if kids weren't exposed to shooting in videogames. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that we apparently make shotguns for children now.
- cristinamk, on 02/22/2009, -2/+16this dont happen just in America.. i just read the news from Europe... dad beat to death his 8 month old baby because he was crying....and other, guy 17, rape 87 year old lady, because he thought old lady is sexy.... its not America, its the world
- galore, on 02/22/2009, -1/+14I'm waiting for a child porn case where a 16 year old e-mails nude pictures of herself and is then charged as an adult.
- stevenjchang, on 02/23/2009, -12/+25you IDIOTS
defend children using guns all you want,
this is REALLY NOT the article to do so,
obviously the dad bought the kid a gun
he taught him how to use it
the kid knew where the gun was kept
HE KILLED his girlfriend and unborn child, and this kid is 11!!!
so STFU about all the reasons why a kid should have a gun and be taught how to use guns
don't pin people making fun of rednecks as uneducated, seriously, the girl is dead, why? think about it. - nerdherder, on 02/22/2009, -7/+20Whats the difference between being killed by a knife or a gun? Either way your dead. One is not better than the other.
- sekone, on 02/22/2009, -7/+20did dick cheney train him?
