- smoothlou, on 01/05/2008, -3/+149I never heard of him before, but this is tragic and amazing at the same time. R.I.P.
- ronk, on 01/05/2008, -0/+136Yet another sad day. Here is his photo: http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/denver/iraqiarm ...
RIP Major. - DeviantDragon, on 01/05/2008, -2/+131The part where he was talking about his wife really got to me. I just can't comprehend what kind of loss that would be to her. He seems like such a sincere and loving guy in this post.
- ChrisAlbon, on 01/05/2008, -3/+114Rest in peace Andy.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -8/+91"Soldiers cannot have the option of opting out of missions because they don't agree with them: that violates the social contract. The duly-elected American government decided to go to war in Iraq. (Even if you maintain President Bush was not properly elected, Congress voted for war as well.) As a soldier, I have a duty to obey the orders of the President of the United States as long as they are Constitutional. I can no more opt out of missions I disagree with than I can ignore laws I think are improper. I do not consider it a violation of my individual rights to have gone to Iraq on orders because I raised my right hand and volunteered to join the army. Whether or not this mission was a good one, my participation in it was an affirmation of something I consider quite necessary to society. So if nothing else, I gave my life for a pretty important principle; I can (if you'll pardon the pun) live with that."
It could not have been said any better. - DeusGear, on 01/05/2008, -4/+78R.I.P soldier, I salute you for all the things you've done.
- Archon810, on 01/05/2008, -5/+73"If you think the U.S. ought to get out tomorrow, don't cite my name as an example of someone's life who was wasted by our mission in Iraq. I have my own opinions about what we should do about Iraq, but since I'm not around to expound on them I'd prefer others not try and use me as some kind of moral capital to support a position I probably didn't support."
Groovemaster buried. - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -2/+58It really sucks to have to write a letter in case you die.....(or in his case, a final posting). That really got to me, reading that post then imagining what's going through his head while being ambushed (or however he died).
it's a shame. - hamobu, on 01/05/2008, -10/+61He was smart, intelligent and he liked Babylon 5. What a waste!
- aflaks, on 01/05/2008, -4/+54tragically beautiful, an amazing letter for the ages. RIP Andy
- lukas88, on 01/05/2008, -1/+51Note to self: Take all babylon 5 references out of autoepitaph, someone beat you to it.
RIP, you make us proud - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -32/+81that was creepy
- SirNoobius, on 01/05/2008, -2/+48if you read the thing. which you didn't, he asked someone else to post it.
- kurian, on 01/05/2008, -5/+48I rarely log into digg because sometimes I see no point
However, this is something that deserves other people's attention.
Promptly dugg. - Archon810, on 01/05/2008, -2/+44What are you, 7? Grow the ***** up. We're talking about a good man's death here.
- orian76, on 01/05/2008, -0/+41This posting is making me consider writing this sort of thing. I would imagine his family finds comfort hearing from him one last time. Very moving
- SamyIsMyHero, on 01/05/2008, -1/+41What a brave man! Not only did he volunteer to chance his life, in exchange for what amounts to not enough, but he wrote his own obituary. Something I could not do without much pain and fear. He looked death in the face and said that if you do happen to take me leave this for those who still live.
May his family truly take take his words and not grieve too hard. It's too bad we've lost such a precious personality. - sup3rmark, on 01/05/2008, -3/+41i'll have you know i just registered for digg, after months of just reading, specifically to bury your asenine, insensitive comment.
- devildux, on 01/05/2008, -2/+35Haven't logged in in ages but had to to digg this
- Frost9999, on 01/05/2008, -1/+34I also find it creepy. But creepier is how nice people are to dead people... wishing them well and RIP and bless your soul etc etc. People should be so kind to the living.
- LoveTheCoast, on 01/05/2008, -8/+37"I do ask (not that I'm in a position to enforce this) that no one try to use my death to further their political purposes. I went to Iraq and did what I did for my reasons, not yours. My life isn't a chit to be used to bludgeon people to silence on either side. If you think the U.S. should stay in Iraq, don't drag me into it by claiming that somehow my death demands us staying in Iraq. If you think the U.S. ought to get out tomorrow, don't cite my name as an example of someone's life who was wasted by our mission in Iraq."
- erikerikerik, on 01/05/2008, -2/+30I was holding strong until I read this "I wasn't the greatest husband. I could have done so much more, a realization that, as it so often does, comes too late to matter."
crap I got something in my eye, some one pass me a tissue. - VegaObscura, on 01/05/2008, -4/+28Way to disrespect the man by not respecting his wishes. "I do ask (not that I'm in a position to enforce this) that no one try to use my death to further their political purposes."
The man is dead--and you didn't even care enough to fully read what he wrote. Instead, you used his death to vent out your frustrations about an administration you don't like--and try to push one you might like. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Let the man rest in peace. Nothing more should have to be said. - Dominea, on 01/05/2008, -2/+26It's called humor.
- Archon810, on 01/05/2008, -2/+26wow, I didn't know this one: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=tl% ... Looked like garbage to me until sup3rmark's comment.
Draxamus buried. - CitizenNorth, on 01/05/2008, -0/+23FTA "I want to thank hilzoy for putting it up for me."
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -6/+29You did NOT read his blog. He did not diss Bush.
- Dominea, on 01/05/2008, -3/+24A moment of silence and a salute to a brave and intelligent man.
- Mercedes383, on 01/05/2008, -0/+20I really doubt you are mentally older than 7
- ZooCoug, on 01/05/2008, -0/+20Same here. I can't imagine the mindset needed to maintain a blog and at the same time create a "I'm dead" blog to be posted in the event of your death. Must have taken a lot of courage and determination to write that post and then ask someone to post it in the event you're KIA.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -5/+24You must be the same guy that goes to a funeral and complains about the food. Sickening...
- Drahkar, on 01/05/2008, -0/+18No kidding. I know people who had nothing good to say about someone suddenly have wonderful and touching things to say about them once they have passed. If people just turned the other cheek and did that while the person was living this would be a much different world to live in.
- slambert90, on 01/05/2008, -2/+20He continued on this site after he was sent to Iraq:
http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/denver/iraqiarm ...
"Editor's Note: This is the last blog Major Olmsted posted on RockyMountainNews.com before he was killed in Iraq."
http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/denver/iraqiarm ...
Do some research before you make a stupid comment like that please. - GruntGrunt, on 01/05/2008, -1/+19He was in the Army. Semper Fidelis is the motto of the United States Marine Core, not the Army.
- michaelschmitt, on 01/05/2008, -2/+20". . . reports say that he and a second member of his unit were killed during an enemy ambush in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad."
Thank you, Major. And thanks to any soldiers who might read this. - candafilm, on 01/05/2008, -0/+17As someone who rarely cries, I teared up when he started talking to his wife. It might be because my wife's name is Amanda and I could imagine her going through this and it was terrible.
R.I.P. sir, you have nothing but respect from me. - notsotricky, on 01/05/2008, -3/+19Tell you what leexy, let him write his own obituary without your editorial, and I'll let you comment on digg without calling you a *****.
- thejokker, on 01/05/2008, -1/+16im glad he included congress in that. Its easy to say it's bush's war, but the reality is that the American people and their representatives were in favor of that war. AT FIRST!!!
I dont think it is the job of a soldier/Marine to decide when the public does not want to fight any longer. They have made their choice to go down a path via elected officials and it is the military's job to obey. - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+16Guys, I don't like the war either, but respect the man's wishes and not use his death as a talking point. A good man died, that's enough.
- valkyries, on 01/05/2008, -3/+18RIP thank you for all that you've done.
- Archon810, on 01/05/2008, -0/+15I think he wrote it in case he died and had hilzoy post it. Quite crazy.
- ComeOutSwingin, on 01/05/2008, -0/+14It's his death. He can quote whatever the ***** he wants!
- adminmatt, on 01/05/2008, -2/+15not an ass = dugg up
it's not that complex.
RIP major - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+13Finding that somehow funny has nothing to do with having a sense of humor. It has more to do with being immature and disrespectful.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/05/2008, -0/+12I can't say I ever read his blog but from what I read, he sounded like a very intelligent person. Rest in Peace.
- zephyr42, on 01/05/2008, -0/+12This week in douchebaggery....
- NCecil, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11Weird, huh? It's not like he was fighting a war or anything. Oh wait...
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11I hadn't read any of his earlier work but that was spectacular. RIP.
- Drahkar, on 01/05/2008, -2/+13Unless you believe that death is the end. And then that's what you believe. Each person is entitled to believe what they want. Perhaps you should consider that before you post things that you know is likely to offend someone.
