Beijing fears spread of child virus
guardian.co.uk — Fears about the rapid spread of an intestinal virus that has killed 26 young children reached the Chinese capital today, as it emerged that doctors have recorded almost 1,500 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in Beijing.

- martalli, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1It is important to note that while this has been described as hand, foot, and mouth disease, typically that is caused by Coxsackie virus, which is generally quite benign. Enterovirus 71 is frequently blamed for viral meningitis. While viral meningitis typically is mild and self-resolves, people have been known to have died from Enterovirus 71 infection. That means this is bad for China, but not necessarily a new superbug.
