- badenglishihave, on 06/04/2009, -2/+67The article is semi-interesting but these comments are retarded.
- DirtPile, on 06/04/2009, -3/+51Obama can now truly pity the fool.
- mrbbad, on 06/04/2009, -1/+28"Most foreign official gifts which the President and First Lady do not retain for themselves are transferred to the National Archives by the Gift Unit, and become part of a presidential library museum collection."
They accept these things because *it would be in poor taste/rude not to* -- but these sorts of items are not typically kept by them -- if they do want to keep something they have received it has to be under a certain value amount or they must purchase it.
Read about it: http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/archives/reference/gi ...
But don't start harpooning things until you've actually taken a moment to fully understand it yourself. - BoneStamp, on 06/04/2009, -0/+19Here is bush getting the same necklace last year:
http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1§ion=0& ... - deema1, on 06/04/2009, -5/+24Isn't that the same one that L'il John wears?
- EvansHall, on 06/04/2009, -4/+19I don't know what type of paper the Telegraph is, but articles like this just make me sad. No talk about our foreign policy in the middle east. No discussion on current affairs in the region. And the need for this paragraph, "The king draped it around Obama's neck, and the taller Obama bent his head low to accept it. It was a risky move as, when the two leaders saw each other back at the G-20 summit in London, critics accused Obama of bowing to the Saudi monarch during a photo-op." This stupid article reads like it's out of TMZ.
I guess the news media knows what we want ... tabloid journalism. If you need proof of that, just read these comments. Anyone want to guess an over/under on the number of "bling bling" comments? Does anyone doubt that this "news article" is going to be top ten? - Gudeldar, on 06/04/2009, -0/+14I thought I was reading YouTube comments for a minute.
- foucaultsvac, on 06/04/2009, -2/+15I have no idea what you're saying.
- alais, on 06/04/2009, -2/+15What republicans? the ones at telegraph.co.uk?
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -1/+13Good thing no one's playing the race card.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -2/+14Lame article, even lamer comments.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -5/+17You're a ***** idiot.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -1/+13History has shown so far that many Bush detractors were dead on. The invasion of Iraq was a foregone conclusion, and we pressured analysts and EPW's (using torture in the case of the latter) in an effort to produce intelligence that supported that foregone conclusion.
It is patriotic to question the nation's leadership, however doing so without factual basis makes you delusional, not patriotic. Bush gave us no shortage of reasons to question the rationale behind his invasion of Iraq, including the writings of PNAC (an organization whose membership included multiple Bush officials) that advocated a long term American presence in the Middle East.
What will history show about the claims of Obama detractors? That they never got to see a birth certificate? That he inherited a ***** sandwich with the economy and did his best to fix it? I don't agree with all of his decisions, but to mindlessly attack his every move is petty and shoots your integrity all to hell. Likewise comparing him to Bush is at best an exercise in intellectual laziness.
I don't agree with wake's use of terms like "recraplicker", but when the right busts the guy's balls every chance they get it devalues their position when they do have a legitimate complaint. - joltjake, on 06/04/2009, -3/+14King Abdullah. "I have heard that black men love bling. We must get Mr. Obama some of this bling so that he will not shoot us during communications."
- jiggawatt, on 06/04/2009, -6/+16Bowing is a part of their culture and a sign of respect and deflection. So ***** what if he bowed. Handshakes are cultural in the same way. It means different things in their culture. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with showing allegiance or subservience. Quit being an ignorant idiot.
- shepstl, on 06/04/2009, -1/+11the limit is $305. if it goes above that, the President would have to pay for it if he wanted to keep it for himself. If he doesn't, then it goes to the National Archives.
- WasabiBomb, on 06/04/2009, -4/+14I'm surprised the article's title doesn't include "... Conservatives Feign Outrage."
- gerrylazlo, on 06/04/2009, -1/+9Shhhhh. You're ruining the drama!
- kukurio, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8He actually can't even keep it for himself. All gifts given from overseas dignitaries belong to the White House, not the President. Which of course begs the question: where do they keep all the random ***** they've gotten over the span of 200 years? I know that certain items go on display for tourists, and others are actually used (e.g., the Resolute Desk), but what happens to the rest? Is it locked in a vault somewhere, a veritable national treasure? I think we should task Nicolas Cage to find out.
- mattmollysdad, on 06/04/2009, -12/+20As for that necklace, Obama said he was going to take it off for safekeeping. Guess he thinks he's still in Chicago or Detroit.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7STFU PS3 IS WAY BETTER
- BoneStamp, on 06/04/2009, -1/+8Is your dog's name George W Bush, because that dawg has the same necklace too...
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,322467,00.html - Redzin, on 06/04/2009, -4/+11I don't understand why so many americans become angry or whatever because he's greeting a king in a foreign country in that country's traditional way of greeting a king.
You're seriousuly too ***** fed up with yourself and your country. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7I don't agree with the notion of comparing Al Quaeda to the Republican party. Yes, many members of the GOP have had their heads up their asses lately. However your comparison is no more justified than the right's comparison of Obama to Hitler just because he's a popular and charismatic speaker.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7Also replying to your own comment is kinda weird... unless of course you have multiple personalities.
- JCEEZ, on 06/04/2009, -1/+7@tallestskil
That's more bow, as in yield... not bow as in respectful salutation. - BoneStamp, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6Cheney got the same medallion when he visited a couple months after Bush, but his wasn't on a gold chain:
http://www.saudi-us-relations.org/fact-book/specia ... - SuicideMouse, on 06/04/2009, -5/+11He looked like he felt really awkward with that necklace on.
Like he was thinking people would say it was bling. - BoneStamp, on 06/04/2009, -0/+5What should we call Bush and Cheney? They got the same medals, although Cheney's didn't have the gold chain...
Bush:

Cheney:

- Noncentz, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5Welcome to the degradation of Digg my friends. Its Eternal September all over again but instead of college students its conservatives trolls. Do yourselves a favor and move to reddit... its not nearly as stupid.
I miss you Digg, what happened to you :( - deema1, on 06/04/2009, -2/+6Yeah, those British Republicans are mad their votes weren't enough to win the US election.
Did you suffer from head trauma? - felman87, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5great balls of fire
- kingnova, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5Uh, you forgot to change accounts before you agreed with yourself.
- dafragsta, on 06/04/2009, -0/+4YEEAAAAH!
- ApokalypseNow, on 06/04/2009, -3/+7...and what has that got to do with anything? As jiggawatt said, it's a culture thing. He'd probably bow to the Prime Minister of Japan, too - would you then suggest that he has Japanese roots that you're uncomfortable with?
- ApokalypseNow, on 06/04/2009, -2/+6It isn't US protocol to puke on foreign dignitaries either, but that didn't stop Bush. Is courtesy such a foreign concept to you?
- ApokalypseNow, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5@AHM
If the foreign dignitary was not a monarch, but an elected official, like the PM of Japan for example, would that still be a problem? There's no DRoK involved there, and the bow is to South East Asians as the handshake is to us, and just as with a handshake, the bow is returned simultaneously, as a sign of mutual respect.
Protocol or not, however, after the arrogance of the previous administration's foreign policy (the Bush Doctrine in particular), I don't think that a respectful and courteous greeting such as this is necessarily a bad thing on the world stage.
@mdhensley5
Your irrational disrespect of our President, your unevidenced assertions about his place of birth (despite all evidence to the contrary), and your blatant xenophobia demonstrate that courtesy would be a labor lost on you. - JCEEZ, on 06/04/2009, -3/+7try visiting other cultures every once in a while, maybe you wont be such an idiot.
- Mnementh2230, on 06/04/2009, -2/+6Or it could just be that he's treating the other world leader as a respected equal. What's a little bow in the name of national cooperation? Frankly, if a tiny gesture like that helps improve our country's national image (read: shows that we're not all a bunch of arrogant bastards) I'm all for it.
- Mnementh2230, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4"COLB is not valid evidence. "
This just shows how little you actually understand the applicable law. - ApokalypseNow, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4@mdhensley5
You have provided all the justification one could ever need right in your searchable comment history.
Despite your protestations to the contrary, the CoLB is legally admissible in any court of law - do you understand what Prima Facie means? Here's the link to the form to request a CoLB from the state of Hawaii: http://hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/pdf/birth.p ... Now, look at page 2. The contents of the CoLB are drawn from the original vital record! If you need additional evidence, go look at Hawaii Statute 338-13.
@AHM
We'll have to agree to disagree on that point then - personally, I find that level of foreign interventionism completely contrary to the beliefs of the Founding Fathers, especially as written by George Washington in his farewell address. - bluto36, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3while i don't normally agree with 0bama i don't think calling him racist for not bowing to the Queen is quite right
- JCEEZ, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4@wakethefockup
I voted for Obama. You need to chill the ***** out. Your stupid comments do nothing to make our country any better, and as a matter of fact, people like you, on both sides of the political spectrum make this country move backwards. STFU - KyotoWolf, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3It's the best selling 'serious' UK newspaper with a mainly conservative readership. I don't read it myself but they're the ones who broke the MP expenses scandal and I hear are usually quite credible. Don't know what's up with this article though.
- cuervoman914, on 06/04/2009, -1/+3common sense comes a long way to make things more understandable in unfamiliar situations. in america tho, it goes more like "holy *****, look at that there muxeecahn with their tacos and vagitas..." completely unaware that said person may not be mexican, mexican isnt a language, and chickens do not have a vagita. you can replace most nouns in that example with different backgrounds, situations, or material things. try it.
- nickert0n, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2Love the video, wrong context.
- deema1, on 06/04/2009, -2/+4I bet that'd get a bundle on www.cash4gold.com
