- Napoleone, on 12/31/2007, -7/+36Because it does. Whether you're aware of it or not, Hollywood has been shaping social/political views for generations. It's not for nothing that the Pentagon asked studio set designers to set up their Iraq media center. They wanted to create the same propaganda effect a show such as 24 achieves.
- EricVKX, on 12/31/2007, -11/+28Buried as Inaccurate. Oliver Stone is definitely not a badass.
- Dawnofanewday, on 12/31/2007, -19/+35Why does Hollywood think it actually has political power?
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -2/+14Yeah, they are "terrorists" because we all know that a group that kidnaps, rapes, tortures, and murders to further their cause and intimidate citizens and the government could not possibly be terrorists.
- Daolohua, on 12/31/2007, -2/+11Well if the negotiations go as well as Alexander, I'd say we're in for WWIII
- Half-Fast, on 12/31/2007, -7/+15Dugg for 2 reasons: 1. His misguided assumption that living in Hollywood makes his opinion more important than the average American.
2. Now I have a reason to actually look for Stone's head being separated from his shoulders, instead of just wishing some random act would solve the dilemma for all of us. - EatingPie, on 12/31/2007, -2/+10Just for clarification....
STONE IS NOT NEGOTIATING ANYTHING. The guerilla's are already releasing the hostages. Stone is only part of the delegation to oversee the release, invited by Hugo Chavez himself.
-Pie - DesertDude, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8After he frees the hostages, people will shrug it off as a conspiracy theory and never believe it.
- DeviantDragon, on 12/31/2007, -4/+11Er...I meant "hot-button." Man that makes me look stupid.
- ganymede2010, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7Oliver Stone is a highly decorated Vietman Vet. Who has laid his life on the line for this country. And he was *badass* enough to make it home alive from that hell hole, and directed one the most accurate war movies ever made. so please be careful when you use your conservative ***** to smear a true patriot.
- DeviantDragon, on 12/31/2007, -11/+17Does it make you feel "edgy" and "special" to put quotation marks around certain "bot-button" terms in the title?
- MikeonTV, on 12/31/2007, -7/+13We're going to miss you Stone.
- yournamehere, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5and take Sharon with you
- DesertDude, on 12/31/2007, -1/+6If you didn't add "the movie", I would've thought you meant the real JFK.
- kolinkoolface2, on 12/31/2007, -4/+8are you kidding me? Chavez a great man? if you considered asking congress for a lifetime presidency "a great man" then your pretty much the coolest American ever. Maybe some of the hollywood celebs should go live in these countries and have all their liberties and freedom of speech stolen. We'll see who the great men are at that point.
- iHeartMoz, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5Thank god they didn't request Uwe Boll.
- SteelChicken, on 12/31/2007, -5/+9hes a badass why exactly...?
- spaceman84, on 12/31/2007, -8/+12No we're not. His films are universally *****.
- niuus, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Yep, good old fact distorting at it's best.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -2/+5Vietnam: Bronze Star with "V" device for valor for "extraordinary acts of courage under fire" and multiple Purple Hearts.
- PATSCRU, on 12/31/2007, -4/+7Well not negotiating with the rebels in colombia seems to have done wonders since the colombian conflict started over 40 years ago! /sarc. When something isn't working, try something else. Sadly, that type of thinking is now considered out of the box, and I'm glad that Stone is willing to try something.
These are American hostages for chrissake, diplomacy is the least that could be done for them. - PATSCRU, on 12/31/2007, -3/+6They are "universally *****" because you don't agree with the message. There are some of us however who are capable of holding two opposing viewpoints in our heads at the same time. Some might say it's what makes us human. I for example hate the message of Patton, but find the movie to be a work of art.
- esbern1, on 12/31/2007, -15/+18such a godawful director. anybody else have an entire theatre laugh during alexander when his gay lover died?
- norman619, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Make a change? I willing to bet this clown hasn't a clue what is going on there and knows dick about the terrorist group in question. It will be funny if they see him as a valuable high profile barganing chip.
- niuus, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3As a Venezuelan i feel extremely sorry that you think liberating hostages, and relieving families grief, is a circus. I really hope God protects your family and you don't get to live such a tragedy. The FARC are no angels, but they're fighting for the poor, in a struggle against the wealthiest class. This all started with the murder of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán many decades ago. I don't support their cruel actions, but to say that real people's life is a circus? Please, get a little bit of humanity. Even if only 3 hostages are released now, this could pave the way for true peace in our beloved sister republic of Colombia.
You told ISIfunded911 to read the newspapers? Do you even know how much lies are spread in the media, in an effort to maintain power and influence? What really surprises me is that you're so dissociated that you are repeating the great lies. Get your facts straight: elections in Venezuela haven't been stolen, NEVER, because the people, "el pueblo", has spoken clearly. They reelected Chavez countless times, and also said NO to the constitutional reform. Inform yourself, then write, dude. - ganymede2010, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3He's a decorated Vietman vet. Google before you look even more stupid.
- m00kie, on 12/31/2007, -1/+4maybe he is negotiating better coke deals for hollywood actors on movie sets and parties? by going directly to the source instead of needing to go through a middle man / cia , it might be cheaper
- EatingPie, on 12/31/2007, -3/+5A media-savvy US Government is nothing new, it started when JFK won the election. A major blow to his opponent -- Nixon -- was that JFK spent time getting made up for the Presidential debate. Nixon had just gotten off a cross-country flight and refused to sit down in a make-up chair. JFK looked good, Nixon looked like a beaten dog, and he had no hope of winning the debate no matter what he said. (No I wasn't there, I heard this from a Nixon advisor on some show.) This really isn't an example of Hollywood wielding power, it's an example of politicians knowing that it's important to look good on TV.
A better example of Hollywood wielding power...
Michael Douglas in "An American President." The movie basically said that the President's morals were a private matter, and we shouldn't judge him. Clinton made Douglas Ambassador to the United Nations about a year later.
-Pie - jasz, on 12/31/2007, -3/+5You know nothing about Colombia. Go die in front of your TV while watching Fox news.
- A Colombian - BabyWookie, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2The draft?
- deadmoo, on 12/31/2007, -8/+10His JFK movie is full of lies, it is fiction. I hate that some people like this movie thinking it is historically accurate. That movie almost single-handedly created an entire generation of conspiracy theorist loons. I still like Oliver Stone though. He wrote the Scarface remake. Scarface!
- BabyWookie, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Yes, I agree. The fascist government and their right-wing paramilitary death squads that the brave FARC rebels are fighting are terrorists.
- terrordome, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Have you observed Venezuelan media? Chavéz and his government probably face the most hostile media climate in the world. No media have been or are being shutdown due to dissidence.
One privately owned TV station didn't get it's license renewed due to violations against broadcasting laws. They are still broadcasting via satellite, however.
The opposition media are allowed to continue broadcasting, even after they sponsored the failed coup d’état against Chavéz. A coup that ended with the PEOPLE reinstalling him as their president. The government that held power briefly before the reinstallation of Chavéz disbanded all democratic institutions. - designer, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4No one cares about this.
- truspect0r, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3Right On!
- niuus, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2The opposition and radicalists here in Venezuela already said the only reason the hostages could be released is because they see Chavez as their leader. In another popular newspaper they said it's because of a 20 million dollars deal. It doesn't matter if you try to do something right, there will always be haters. This are the same people who supported the de facto government of Pedro Carmona Estanga, the closing of the official government TV station, and created the most incredible media lie: that the shooters in Puente Llaguno were shooting the manifestants, when in reality there was no manifestant near the premises, and they were shooting the corrupt police that was killing them, sent by a known opposition leader.
- jmpeagle, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4the problems in Colombia do need to be sexed up a little
- jasz, on 12/31/2007, -2/+4I don't care about Oliver Stone, but as a Colombian I feel extremely sorry about this whole circus that Chavez is leading to become a new Hollywood star. Taking Stone to Colombia to “participate” in the liberation of only three of the kidnapped by FARC is a mere scene of his new movie. There are still thousands of kidnapped in Colombia, some of them have been kidnapped for more then 6 years. Chavez's solution is to “exchange” kidnapped with the guerrilla leaders that have been captured by the government; he wants to free hundreds of criminals in exchange for innocent lives, what an idiot.
Since (of course) the government will not do such ridicule, then Chavez's response is to bring attention to him while making fun of the Colombian government. Chavez himself has stolen 3 times the elections in Venezuela, condemning the opposition and manipulating the media to his favor.
The FARC guerrillas are indeed a terrorist group now, they have been a terrorist group for the past 30 years. They recruit children, they kidnap, they are drug dealers, they trade weapons, they bomb small towns, they place landmines, they blow dams, electric towers, churches, police stations, schools and anything else that stands in front of them.
When FARC began back in the 40's they were a communist group protesting for equality, now they are part of the drug dealing business and that's the reason why they're not really looking forward to peace; it's business, not political opposition.
See the real face of the guerrillas in Colombia here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/smoreno2007/ (this is not my flickr account) - masterm1nd, on 12/31/2007, -3/+5That's funny because you and revsneerwell both adore the movies because you agree with the message.
- KingGorilla, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Stop with the signatures we know who you are
- ISIfunded911, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2You lied in your other comment about Venezuela in a ridiculous way; now you tell someone who recommends Chomsky to watch FoxLies. But the most interesting thing is that you pretend to be Columbian but offer no precise criticism of the facts I and Chomsky talk about.
- solid12345, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2Hmm yet another naive liberal who lives in a pearly gate mansion on malibu drive pretending he understands the plight of the peasant class.
- ZenMojo, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2How dare someone from Hollywood risk his life negotiating for the release of captives no one else in the world gives a damn about? The sheer gall...
/sarcasm - Tippis, on 12/31/2007, -1/+2...and "Hollywood" represents some of the primary agents of tha mass media.
- headhunterMDK, on 01/01/2008, -1/+2You don't have to be such a douchebag.. my wife just happens to be from colombia.. FARC are terrorists! Uribe might be an ass sometimes but I think he is doing the right thing for colombia. Besides WTF are they rebelling against? That cause has been long forgotten. I really don't care what Chomsky has to say about latin america.. My wife's family has seen what the FARC can do. Dead relatives for example. Besides if you really want to know what colombia is like, then fly into Bogota and stay for a couple of days.. you might be surprised. The people are really wonderful and I have a great time every time I go down there. You post just reeks of ignorance.. you apparently know nothing about latin american politics.
- terrordome, on 12/31/2007, -2/+3FARC are both communists and "terrorists", what better tool for fearmongering in the US?
- GeorgeClayton, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Next in the news: Terrorists have a new hostage & they want $20 million (or however much that douche is supposedly worth).
****ing hippies! - floorman56, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I have heard that people who listened to the debate on the radio said Nixon had won...
- greenriver572, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1dumbass, he's just going for the coke
- solid12345, on 01/01/2008, -0/+1The truth about Vietnam, you mean like that all Vietnam vets massacred children, took drugs, or went on commando missions into enemy territory?
It is a shame Mel Gibson's "We Were Soldiers" is not considered a classic because it gave a true honest depiction of most vietnam vets, guys who just did their duty, fought, some died, some lived, and that was it. -
