- cheviot, on 10/11/2008, -9/+227If she can't be trusted to act ethically with the comparatively little power a governor has, how can anyone trust her to act ethically in the second highest office in the land?
- weaselfingers, on 10/11/2008, -3/+209She'd better have one hell of a wink ready.
- otep, on 10/11/2008, -4/+127Keating 5 + Troopergate = MAVERICKY.
- mrsbrown333, on 10/11/2008, -13/+105checkmate.
- Paulorific, on 10/11/2008, -2/+887 bucks says republicans won't care.
- revarien, on 10/11/2008, -2/+85Wow... she'll be a good replacement for Dick Cheney!
- sharpfork, on 10/11/2008, -1/+61McCain/Palin: both candidates on the ticket have been found to have violated ethics standards- a first in American history.
How Mavericky of them. - P0peRatz0, on 10/11/2008, -4/+60The panel was 6 republicans and 2 democrats.
It was not "run by liberal democrats". Nowhere in the report does it say that the "firing of Monegan was a "proper and lawful exercise" of the governor's authority. You got that from the McCain campaign's statement.
now go get your shine box. - kelsosmythe, on 10/11/2008, -5/+57You Betcha!
- Paulorific, on 10/11/2008, -0/+50In this economy it's all I have. :(
- bbqsalad, on 10/11/2008, -3/+48the fact America can consider a person like Palin to run this country is extremely scary. What is wrong with people?
- 37RUSSK4N, on 10/11/2008, -2/+42She's perfect for office !
After all, Cheney's leaving some pretty big, filthy shoes to fill hey ! - WinMacLin, on 10/11/2008, -3/+35Damn those 'Gotcha legislative committees' ay palin?
- UltraMegaFilms, on 10/11/2008, -4/+34I bet 5 bucks Palin doesn't know how to play chess. In fact, make that checkers.
- Dipsomaniac, on 10/11/2008, -2/+32Yes. She's been proving for weeks now that she can't act particularly intelligently, and now it appears that ethics are as disposable as intelligence for the Republican campaign.
- bizkit00, on 10/11/2008, -2/+32That's "act intelligently," you dolt.
His case and point are proven by you: you are unintelligent enough to misquote someone into bad grammar, and unethical enough to actually be willing to bring back the Red Scare to keep the Black guy from office. Cold War's over buddy. - awasson, on 10/11/2008, -3/+27Oh Cheney must be proud that the new candidate for Vice President and her record on ethics.
- bryxal, on 10/11/2008, -4/+24If anyone wants a more balanced and more thoughtful analysis, I enjoyed the Times:
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1 ... - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+21Palin is a loser... you betcha!
- awasson, on 10/11/2008, -2/+19Wow.... That's brutal. Todd Palin needs a job to keep himself occupied. I wonder if he would set up a little desk for himself in the White House so he could pursue other obsessions.
Here's the clincher:
"But even though she won't likely face any legal repercussions, the amateurism and cronyism of her brief administration hardly leaves Palin sitting pretty. Troopergate's final verdict may be even more damaging than a rebuke: her administration was, at least this regard, just as self-motivated as the Washington fat cats and lobbyists she hopes to unseat."
So much for your small town values :-p - faded242, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18*****, I'd go a *lot* higher than $7
- charm803, on 10/11/2008, -1/+17The council was made up of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080916/ap_on_el_pr/pa ...
"And it marked a further fraying of a bipartisan consensus, formed by a unanimous panel before Palin became McCain's running mate, that her firing of the state's public safety commissioner justified the ethical investigation."
Try again. - birdly, on 10/11/2008, -2/+17Just unethical.
Oh no! Rezko is COOPERATING?? That SCUMBAG! - TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2008, -5/+19Do you assert that we should allow corruption to go unchecked in the interest of saving money?
- DotGet, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14@akchrs
That doesn't make it ethical.
Also, you were incorrect about everything you said in the first place, so I don't know why you would be criticizing his reading skills. - IphtashuFitz, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14Here's a part that really got me:
"But the Branchflower report still makes for good reading, if only because it convincingly answers a question nobody had even thought to ask: Is the Palin administration shockingly amateurish? Yes, it is. Disturbingly so."
I think I'll go read the entire report now. And I most certainly do NOT want a bunch of amateurs running Washington!
and even more...
"The state's head of personnel, Annette Kreitzer, called Monegan and had to be warned that personnel issues were confidential. The state's attorney general, Talis Colberg, called Monegan and had to be reminded that the call was putting both men in legal jeopardy, should Wooten decide to sue. The governor's chief of staff met with Monegan and had to be reminded by Monegan that, "This conversation is discoverable ... You don't want Wooten to own your house, do you?" " - birdly, on 10/11/2008, -2/+16More proof that power corrupts self-involved people.
- secrity, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14Christian fundamentalism masquerading as patriotism.
- goober1473, on 10/11/2008, -1/+14You know, I have always been puzzled by the view of communism, socialism and any other view than the capitalist view being evil in the US. Apparently in the Land of the Free there are certain things that you just can't vote for or have views on. The witch hunts of the 50s seemed to be totally against the thoughts of the constitution, free speech anyone?
I am stunned that the notion of free health care and other "socialist" views are seen as a bad thing by the Republican supporters... Over in the UK we have the NHS, yay free health care and it's results are that there is good care at a much lower cost. In France (oh no, they didn't support the Iraq war) they too hold socialist views. What exactly is wrong with a view that is intended to help the little man? - greepoman, on 10/11/2008, -3/+16If you actually look at the released report, although the firing was perfectly within her right, the ethics violations occured leading up to that. 1) Using a personal vendetta to put pressure to fire the officer in the first place. 2) Knowingly allowing her husband to use her office to help carry out this vendetta
Read the more informative Time article:
"Not only did people at almost every level of the Palin administration engage in repeated inappropriate contact with Walt Monegan and other high-ranking officials at the Department of Public Safety, but Monegan and his peers constantly warned these Palin disciples that the contact was inappropriate and probably unlawful. Still, the emails and calls continued — in at least one instance on recorded state trooper phone lines. " - birdly, on 10/11/2008, -1/+14That line isn't in the article.
- gimpbully, on 10/11/2008, -0/+13read the article. The guilt wasn't in relation to the firing of the head of the dept, it was that she used her influence to get Wooten fired. That was against the law.
- cyberprunes, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12Dick Cheney respectfully disagrees.
Yes, you've described the constitutional definition of VP but not the practical reality of the position as it exists today.
Gov. Palin has also acknowledged during her debate that she sees much flexibility when it comes to the powers vested in the VP office.
The power of the VP office needs to be scaled back not examined for ways to expand it's power. I think I know which way an unethical politician will lean. - unitedkronos, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12Hopefully she won't be able to wink once the US public is done with her.
- shig, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12She thought she was the Queen of Alaska. That's what it said on the sash she wore at that contest. She got a crown and everything.
Honest mistake. - FreddieD, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11Yeah as crazy as it sounds, I don't see this being much of a player in the election. The right wing adores her and she can do no wrong no matter what. The left wing despises her and she can do no right no matter what. Most independents (folks who dislike negative ads and the lack of substance more than anybody) think she is worthless.
In other words, this finding will do little to change the minds of most people come election day. Maybe a few, but not many. - RogueGenius, on 10/11/2008, -5/+16Changes nothing. Wasn't voting for the dimwit anyway.
Obama/Biden 08! - TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2008, -1/+12OR DON'T EVEN VOTE AT ALL!
Same difference. - awasson, on 10/11/2008, -1/+11Oh dude... Where do I begin.....
How about with the part where he wasn't found to be insubordinate and that it was actually Todd Palin who influenced her decision to get rid of the trooper and in turn had Monegan fired. See quote below from Time CNN:
Chuck Kopp, asked Bailey, the Palin staffer, why Monegan was being fired, he was told simply: "Todd is really upset with Monegan."
The fact that you would attempt a comparison between Obama's non-connection with ACORN and Palin's direct connection in Trooper-Gate is a bit concerning. - vanishedlight, on 10/11/2008, -0/+10Blind faith.
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/11/2008, -1/+11I wonder what the polls will look in a few days, after people have had time to read about the Troopergate report that states Palin did in fact abuse her power...
- elister, on 10/11/2008, -0/+10The vote was 12 to 0. There were 8 Republicans and 4 Democrats. All voted in favor for this ruling. What Palin did wasn't illegal, but clearly un-ethical.
If Palin will abuse her powers in Alaska, she will certainly abuse them in Washington. - maz2331, on 10/11/2008, -3/+13Actually, it may be possible for the Republicans to spin this positively. Here's how:
Palin ran as a "reformer" who took on the entrenched interests, and can easily point at the investigation as just the "status quo" trying to protect itself from someone who threatens their "gravy train". The trooper himself is pretty difficult to defend - he's not a sympathetic character.
"I tried to get the system to deal with a bad cop, and they came after me because the system protects its own. You betcha they do!" - Suricou, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9Party loyalty.
- gimpbully, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10it wasn't Monegan's firing they found wrong doing with. She used improper influence to get Wooten fired.
- RogueGenius, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10I don't think this is a game changer. Any votes she brought to the ticket were the lowest possible brow voters to begin with. These knuckle draggers don't have any concept of American values or even Human values to begin with. It won't change their vote.
I don't think any of us are really surprised by this, but her voters won't even know what it means. - TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9Have you considered not reacting like a total spazz and just not using your account? Seems like a less spazzy solution to me.
Also, you're a spazz. - awasson, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9So with that in mind.... Would you vote for her?
- JohnLawson, on 10/11/2008, -4/+13So, does Obama want to break out the bubbly now or be polite and wait?
- DVmaker, on 10/11/2008, -2/+10The thinking public have already made up their mind.
