- Haptick, on 06/21/2009, -0/+127I fear that once the foreign press leaves, the death toll will sharply rise, Tienanmen Square style.
- BigGooseX, on 06/21/2009, -0/+94This is just another example of how the Iranian leaders are doing everything in their power to keep information out of the country. I'm just wondering when they will flip the switch to completely cutoff all internet access. Then the entire world will truly be in the dark.
- gaymathman, on 06/21/2009, -0/+66Wow, Iran is probably going to go crazy in the next couple of days. It seems fairly obvious that there was election fraud, and now the Iranian Government is attempting to shut down journalism operations in the country... Khamenei seems to be getting partial to violence; perhaps now the Iranian people will see what a sham their government is. Mousavi isn't so radically different from Ahmadinejad that Khamenei couldn't make concessions and investigate the election.
- dstrizzle69, on 06/21/2009, -6/+64I blind man saw this coming
- j1ggy, on 06/21/2009, -1/+49Censoring reality does not make it go away.
- govsucks, on 06/21/2009, -4/+43Dear Iranian military personel. Please just refrain, just don't do anything. You don't want to be ruled by totalitarian collectivists anymore than the people in the streets. So just do nothing. Let the religious collectivists defend themselves, go home and secure your families and stop helping the government force its will on your own people. God will not reward you for killing unarmed muslims. Collectivists both social and religious always take free will for granted. Now use your individual free will to make the right choice.
- MrInfallible, on 06/21/2009, -1/+40The BBC is independent from the government and advertiser making it the one of the most independent TV stations in the world and produces some of the worlds best Television.
- gaymathman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+34One should also remember that Ahmadinejad lacks the support of Ali Akbar Rafsanjani, who heads the body that chooses the supreme leader of Iran (currently Khamenei), but Khamenei continues to back Ahmadinejad. He still has to appease Rafsanjani, who was publicly insulted by Ahmadinejad, if he wants his policies to hold over for the arrival of the next leader. This could lead to all out civil war, and all over a position about as important as the President of Germany or the (current) President of Russia; one that holds most no power. Iran can't even give their people the shadow of Democracy that a fair election for such a powerless position would bring.
- relaxeder, on 06/21/2009, -0/+28Its not even America's issue.
- thecheatah, on 06/21/2009, -0/+27There is about to be a massacre. Point some satellites on them....
- MacBookForMe, on 06/21/2009, -11/+38"In the days following the 12 June election, BBC Persian TV was disrupted by "deliberate interference" from inside Iran, the corporation said. In response, the BBC increased the number of satellites that carry its BBC Persian television service for Farsi-speakers in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan."
- MetalHead73, on 06/21/2009, -1/+27The President should not speak on matters if he is not fully ready to back it up.
He cannot put his full support into the protesters if he is not willing to help them, and America is simply not in a position to go into another country and support this uprising on a larger scale then he has already.
Remember Bush Sr.?
Yeah, he sat back in his chair and told the Iraqi's to rise up against Saddam Hussein after the first Gulf War.
They did, and they got slaughtered while America did nothing.
You sir, are an idiot. - Stiverton, on 06/21/2009, -0/+24Good for the BBC, this is the kind of thing the media should be using it's power to do.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -2/+26What of Jason Jones? Is he still there or did he leave already?
- edd17, on 06/21/2009, -2/+25Um, yes it is.
What the hell are YOU talking about?
The BBC is controlled by the BBC Trust, a completely independent body. The licence fee is collected on behalf of the BBC by an independent contracting company, the right to collect the licence fee is granted by a Royal Charter. The current government has nothing to do with it.
Thee BBC has some of the highest journalistic standards in the world, has long history of pissing off the government (see the Hutton Inquiry) and is routinely accused of both pro and anti Israeli bias (a sure sign of honesty to me)
Please have a clue about what you are talking about next time. - mickstephenson, on 06/21/2009, -0/+18You probably don't understand why this is more significant than a transient journalist being expelled, but THE permanent BBC reporter in Iran being expelled is something quite different.
It's an appointed post that has been screened by the Iranian government, his ability to report from Iran will have been a negotiated agreement with the most respected broadcaster in the world. - Feener, on 06/21/2009, -0/+18Carrier pigeons FTW.
- daxxer, on 06/21/2009, -5/+23If I was Jon Leyne I would probably would have already left!
- jack2454, on 06/21/2009, -3/+20exactly, nothing "BREAKING" about this.
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+17clearly you like using the word clearly, in order to clearly show that you believe that you are right by clearly saying clearly to make it seem like we clearly agree with you.
Clearly we don't. - stagnate, on 06/21/2009, -1/+16What is going to happen within 24 hours that he isn't allowed to be around for?
- BattleScars, on 06/21/2009, -0/+15"Please go away, we want to do some amoral dictator stuff and kill some guys who talked ***** about us, thanks"
- fury420, on 06/21/2009, -0/+15I bet one could find dozens of HOURS of coverage of things going on in Gaza from the BBC
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -0/+14He should be careful. People have a tendency to get shot by "terrorists" when not listening to the government.
- holzp, on 06/21/2009, -4/+17Thank God Iranian military personnel read Digg. Next time post it in Farsi.
- ByteMeAHole, on 06/21/2009, -1/+13Expect the death toll to rise sharply when the media is gone, and the Iranian government starts to just shut down all network connectivity till they have killed as many as it takes to shut-up the voice of opposition...
- Platina, on 06/21/2009, -2/+14Just to say, BBC is alot better then any news agency from America.
- tk0680, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11Come on, you're not applying equal levels of intelligence to all sides here.
Reporting in Gaza still happens when there's a development. If you're after a daily "turns out there's fighting in Gaza!" report, then you're out of luck. News has the word "new" in it for a reason.
WRT Iran, wanting to "bomb" Iran was regarding the regime. Saying they "stand with" Iran is very obviously referring to the anti-Ahmadinejad protesters, rather than the regime. There's no contradiction here, unless you deliberately misinterpret statements as you have. - JROXZ, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11Everyone who thinks that this administration should back a side ignores history completely... Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Manuel Noriega, etc...
The current position is the right position -Condemn the violent aggressions against peaceful demonstration and laud the virtues of civil rights. - Threlly1, on 06/21/2009, -3/+14Witness the power of the greatest News Agency the world has ever known.
Dictators and Fascists fear them the most.
They will probably invite Fox news in for a nice lunch. - BassMastr, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11At least they didn't go North Korea on him and arrest him and charge him with espionage...
- Pigeon, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11Someone call?!
- Supernova36, on 06/21/2009, -3/+12I wish you nothing but the worst.
- FcukAllYall, on 06/21/2009, -1/+9I wish there was such thing as REAL TIME Google Earth
- dogstylee, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8BREAKING: Google StreetView Car kicked out of Iran. Films whole incident.
- ginogrz, on 06/22/2009, -0/+8Wow, their video player goes to 11.
- SwiftKick34, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7This is hardly surprising.
- norman619, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7What are you babbling about? I don't aprove of the job Obama is doing but making this his fault is a strong sign of mental problems. Seek help.
- holzp, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7From a guy named Falser.
- borez, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7@falser: The BBC is required by its charter to be free from both political and commercial influence, it follows no agenda other then to report the facts. The BBC will only publish a story if it comes from at least two RELIABLE sources. If the BBC feels a story is not completely accurate, it will not publish it, not because of any agenda Political, governmental or otherwise, but because it basically can't back it up. It really is as simple as that.
Other news sources I've had no experience of, so I can't speak on their behalf, but the BBC I have. - dagamer34, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7Umm... yes? Assuming that the North Korean reporters can get into the country with some quasi-believable story, a reporter has certain protections given to him/her by the US Constitution (it has protections for non-citizens, not just citizens).
That's what makes us different from North Korea, no? Laws not based on tyrannical thinking? - CanadaMan87, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Google Street View is created using a 360-degree camera mounted on top of a van that literally has to drive up and down every street taking pictures.
- borez, on 06/21/2009, -2/+8***** hilarious comment. If you've ever met any staff journalists from the BBC, I can assure you they are in NO way capable of dragging dead bodies around to create mock-death scenes... muppet.
- ronaldinho, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5Dude this is not Twitter
- norman619, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5mickstephenson:
Thank you sir for putting this into perspective.
I digg you. - borez, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5I'm sure it's already being done.
- RatatRatR, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Me too! But if there were, no way us ordinary people would be allowed to use it.
- dlan4327, on 06/21/2009, -2/+7Hey, it's me. Knock Knock.So, uh, you leaving soon?
Huh? Oh yeah I'll leave soon.
Yeah, well, um here's a suggestion. Um, leave by tomorrow and there won't be any problems.
Huh?
Yeah,24 hours.
Why,what-what happens in 24 hours?
Huh? I dunno, I'm not psychic, man. I'm just saying it would probably be better for everybody if you're gone tomorrow.
Uh, yeah, alright,I'll see what I can do.
Sweet, sweet, great. Uh,how's everything else going?
Good.
Alright, Alright. See you later. Don't forget!(Clicks tongue) Nah,you're not gonna forget. - andreo, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4They won't be flipping any switches on satellite communication. So while the information may not be as plentiful there will still be some communication.
