- TCSchaef420, on 01/27/2009, -9/+55How about they just use the video as evidence and prosecute them both! ***** Pigs!
- chupavacas, on 01/27/2009, -5/+42I think an assault charge is in order.
- webgrafix12, on 01/27/2009, -6/+40Put his ass in jail!!!!
- snockhockster, on 01/28/2009, -3/+25Yeah... it's not like the officer removed his gun from his holster and pulled the trigger while aiming at the back of an unarmed civilian for no reason whatsoever.
Oh wait... that's exactly what happened. - wineinc, on 01/28/2009, -7/+25All the officers who were there during the shooting should be fired. In addition, the watch commander should be involuntarily demoted.
- hamobu, on 01/28/2009, -6/+23I think that all cops, not just the one that did the shooting, should be persecuted. They were all in on it, and they tried to cover for each other.
- TheBigL481, on 01/28/2009, -5/+20Sickening. All of the officers there should be fired, just for letting such brutal methods be used.
- malanic, on 01/28/2009, -6/+19"Obama was being sworn in as leader of the free world."
It may have been unintentional on your part, however as an Australian, I find that statement slightly arrogant and offensive. Obama is not the leader of the free world. He may the leader of the most powerful country in the free world, but he's not the leader of my country (even though it seems like it most of the time with our kowtowing arse kissing prime ministers).
Cue the obligatory "Who bailed your asses out of the fire in WWII. USA!!! ***** Yea! Now shut the ***** up and throw another shrimp on the barbie." - cryonix, on 01/28/2009, -5/+16Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the cop up and pissed on the kid afterwards.
- oldhick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+11I could see how Obama's name would arise when discussing race relations and institutional racism in the United States.
- DigiDave, on 01/27/2009, -8/+18I still can't get over what happened. The city of Oakland can't either. Nor should it. Just as Obama was being sworn in as leader of the free world..... the Oscar Grant shooting reminds us that we still have a long way to go.
- suttin, on 01/28/2009, -0/+10They could all be tried for accessories to murder. They did not try to arrest the cop that shot Oscar.
- AlienMushroom, on 01/28/2009, -1/+11No. He should be FIRED and sent to a maximum security JAIL!
- Kitakaze, on 01/28/2009, -0/+10Well, the cop was about to, but then he got all camera shy.
- rayraym0fucka, on 01/28/2009, -1/+10If they hadn't been trained yet they should not have been carrying them.
What was his excuse again? "I thought it was my tazer". The whole department could be held accountable for allowing untrained police officers to carry weapons they can't distinguish from a real gun. - mikelieman, on 01/28/2009, -0/+9Cellphones + Youtube is the ONLY reason these Bad Cops aren't getting away with this stuff anymore.
We need a law making it your civic duty to record the actions of all Law Enforcement Officers. - sabach, on 01/28/2009, -1/+10If you can't control a suspect without using deadly force you're in the wrong line of work. I'd like to see these cops today go to work in a penitentiary where the inmates are better armed than the staff.
- malanic, on 01/28/2009, -7/+15In case you hadn't realised, Obama is an African American who was recently elected as president of the USA. Some would say that this represents how far America has come in regards to race relations and equality for all.
It's understandable that many people may think that Oscar Grant was harassed and shot because of the colour of his skin. I certainly believe that he'd still be alive if he were white. Some would say that this shows that America has a long way to go in regards to race relations and equality for all.
"Just as Obama was being sworn in as leader of the free world..... the Oscar Grant shooting reminds us that we still have a long way to go."
Make sense now? - oldhick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+8World media has traditionally called the President of the United States the leader of the free world for decades. It's not so much arrogance on our part as tradition, at least in motivation. I certainly understand how it IS arrogant. Recognizing that arrogance is a good first step towards changing the language, but I see it as DigiDave repeating what he's heard as opposed to him simply being "arrogant". I guess its semantics but I thought a distinction might be made.
- minimitable, on 01/28/2009, -0/+8@srs2000: You are a racist and an apologist. There is NO scenario you could conjure to make what this cop did even remotely acceptable. Apparently from your little rundown of your interactions with cops and the fact that you felt it necessary to point out your affiliation with "non-white friends", you're white. Yet YOU count yourself qualified to represent every non-white AND refute a black man's post with the brilliant argument of "When you don't break the law.. You don't really have much to worry about."???
What's it like living in "Myopia"? - blackinthmiddle, on 01/28/2009, -2/+9"You have to be insane to think that cop actually intended to shoot that kid.
No one is that stupid. It was a tragic accident."
You're pretty naive, aren't you? Probably a teenage white boy who's never had to deal with a pissed off cop. Under those circumstances, I could understand you thinking the way you are. As a black man who had two officers point their guns at me while the other two searched my car (illegally, I might add) in the middle of an expressway for all to see, I'm *NEVER* surprised at just how stupid cops can be.
Sorry, but cops do these types of things all the time. And you're right, they could have easily parlayed this into a "gang-related" shooting, even with all of the eye witnesses. Thank God for cellphone video cameras (something I thought to be foolish when it first came out) and youtube! It's the only reason these cops are not getting away with this. - heystoopid, on 01/28/2009, -1/+8Because they all failed to do their duty and broke their oath as a law enforcement officers by condoning the very deliberate murder of a victim they were assaulting .
- Aitese, on 01/28/2009, -2/+9As I'm Digging comments I'm noticing a lot of them are being buried in response. Could the person doing that at least try to counter the sentiments above...what about the punch in the face and then subsequent shooting do you find to be justified?
- oldhick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+7First, there is never a justification for "punching" someone in the face. There are methods and tactics that officers train with to avoid such pointless acts of violence. Punching can cause permanent damage. Punching can be highly ineffective if not landed correctly. A poorly aimed and timed punch can actually leave you vulnerable. So punching is NEVER an acceptable option for law enforcement. And the idea that spitting might warrant a punch is ridiculous. Law enforcement officers aren't trained to retaliate against perceived injustices to themselves, they are trained to subdue suspects. Now that being said, very few officers are trained well so this is what you get...
@Aitese,
I'm not really sure what you're looking for. I think srs2000's comment is ridiculous.
"You have to be insane to think that cop actually intended to shoot that kid.", then call me insane because I believe from that video that is exactly what that cop intended to do.
"If a cop wanted to murder a young person like that a few days later they would find his body and it would end up unsolved with a suspicion of being gang related." - that would imply that the murder is premeditated. There is a difference between intentional and premeditated. We don't know what was going on in that's cops head but there are a million possible reasons as to why he might have intentionally shot that kid. Maybe his girlfriend dumped him to hang out with some other bozo on NYE and he was pissed off to be working and a bunch of obnoxious kids pushed him to the edge and he simply freaked out. It happens. Wouldn't be the first time a cop has done such a thing. It happens in war, it happens in life... People get pushed to the edge and without thinking they do something terrible.
So to say that it was absolutely, 100% unintentional is silly. It could be anything. - seanosays, on 01/28/2009, -8/+15THIS makes me ***** sick. I will never understand the mentality of a cop. The motives that compel a person to a life of petty power are sickening. I hope this officer and the murderer burn.
- roho76, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6"Their are no good cops. Because if there were any good cops there wouldn't be any bad cops." some guy.
- celestial, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6***** the police coming straight from the underground
A Young ***** got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
they have the authority to kill a minority - oldhick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6@srs200, When you don't break the law you don't have much to worry about... Please tell me you're joking.
- blacktriangle, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6He should be sent to a "pound me in the ass" prison.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+6You're looking for answers that may not have a logical conclusion to them. You're going on the vein of "he's definitely guilty we just couldn't see it" mentality. How do we know this kid did something wrong at all? Maybe he was verbally assaulting a police officer. Last time I checked this didn't earn you a one way ticket to the morgue. Also, police officers are humans and feel emotion. Logic and emotion don't always produce the same outcome. To sit here and feel that some kid deserved to die or be punched is a little extreme. We're not dealing with a math problem where 2+2 always equals 4. We are dealing with human beings that made grave errors in judgment. To believe or feel compelled to state that this kid did do something wrong and is resisting arrest is foolish and ignorant. If by some series of events 1984 takes hold on the Americas I will not be there to help protect your freedoms 9bpm9 since you feel that an average American citizen is guilty based on a grainy video (for which you state it probably happened right before the video was shot) and no actual physical evidence. Also, remind me not to ever have you on a jury trial.
- JedicodeWarrior, on 01/28/2009, -2/+7If he pulled his gun with the intent of harming the kid, that's reckless endangerment which is murder 2. Fry 'em!
- smotpoker, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5It's obvious in the above video that Oscar was at worst verbally abusive when the cop ran up, pushed him against the wall and hit him. Afterward, all three suspects promptly sat right down. Just as the cops knew they were being watched/recorded, so did the suspects.
It is feasible that they could have appeared threatening to a colleague and lost his temper but that is still no excuse for him or their murdering accomplice to take the actions that they did. Granted police take such actions every day and everyone looks the other way but those actions are neither legal or required.
The excuses people such as yourself make to absolve these officers of their culpability are exactly why so many run rampant and unchecked and why incidents such as the Oakland "riots", LA riots etc happen and innocent people get locked up every day for defending themselves for rogue officers or so the cops will have plausible deniability if a given suspect tries to report their abuses.
It doesn't look like these suspects did anything to be physically intimidating and there was definitely no reason to run up and strike a blow. If he felt they were getting too close he had just cause to get between them, pull a weapon and order them back or maybe push them back. The fact he dove right in and hit one indicates he was acting out of anger, not fear. - Aitese, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5Until our governments start to loosen their grip on the American coin purse this will always be true. Here in the UK the news of American financial crisis was met as if a close relative had died...pretty much all our main industries are wrapped up in American investment.
- Kitakaze, on 01/28/2009, -1/+6You had me at ... er, uh, sorry. You lost me at "Poor cop."
- aonaran, on 01/28/2009, -2/+7I hate when people use locally known acronyms online. A story posted online should make it obvious WITHIN the story what any acronym means even if it is obvious and well known locally.
Those of us not from the California "Bay Area" don't know that BART stands for Bay Area Rapid Transit. ... newspapers shoul not assume we do. Likewise, if I were writing about transit cops in my neck of the woods I wouldn't say TTC cop or HSM cop and never even give an indication that it is transit I'm talking about.
I think I'll send this rant to the paper. - blackinthmiddle, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4From LOPposse:
"The point was that he thought he had his tazer out not his gun. This story is more about politics than justice."
LOPposse, I'm sure that b.s. excuse flies with you, but it only begs for more questions. Such as, why is this officer attempting to shoot an unarmed man who's subdued, on his stomach with a knee to the back of neck with a tazer? And if he were to tazer the suspect, while his fellow officer's knee was on his kneck, wouldn't he also get some of the tazing and therefore wouldn't try it under those circumstances? The dude was on the floor and had no weapon on him and there were *multiple* cops there. Obviously the only excuse one could reasonably come up with to justify this is, "I meant to pull out a different weapon". However, any reasonable person who sees the video (again, thank goodness for technology) can't help but ask why was there a need for *any* weapon! - WiretapStudios, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Congratulations, you spelled both words wrong.
- rayraym0fucka, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I don't mean fire and imprison every cop that carried the tazer. If he isn't lying about mistaking his gun for his tazer then the people in charge should be put up on charges.
- smotpoker, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4s/persecuted/prosecuted
"persecuted" implies injustice (typically some form of oppression). OTOH, "prosecution" is morally/ethically ambiguous (in our legal system if not in Webster's) and just implies that the government is attempting to legally punish. - smotpoker, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4Just video footage and witness testimony of them blocking and stealing camera [phones]. Oh, and the initial denial that there was any camera footage from the BART station. Plus they didn't attempt to stop/arrest either of their violent colleagues
- EricDrawback, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4How about you argue your position instead of going straight to insults. Sounds like you might be in the IQ range to join the local police force.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A0 ... - harpoonhank420, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5I don't know why you Americans (im Canadian) give your transit police guns
- tomarocco, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Once again, ***** the Pigs.
- smotpoker, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Every cop who hit the suspects, was trying to block cameras, or stole cameras afterward should be charged with accessory and fired. AFAIK, that would be at least three who were present that night.
- EricDrawback, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5How about this....every one of Oscar's friends and relatives gets to punch that ***** pig in the face.
- Aitese, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Why are you speculating and why did three people agree with your completely flawed assumptions? There are SEVERAL videos shot from various angles...there was no "heat of the moment" The guy was on the ground, there was a cop with his knee on the kids head. All the other "uncivilized" guys were in cuffs. There were about half a dozen armed and NOT CUFFED" cops standing around...hardly the danger zone. Watch the damned video.
- jgubbe, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3Tell that to all who just celebrated it this morning, or who will this afternoon. Or go to a local park April 20th and observe. Enjoy Hempfest at that time of day. Marijuana legislations are entered under that bill number. Even comic books.
420 has been adopted as a universal code for its time to smoke pot or advocacy of marijuana.
So next time you decide to crawl out of your cave 30 years later remember not everything will have died.
420 forever, man. - smotpoker, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3I didn't say "simply taking", I said "stolen" precisely because there is no record of what happened to them and the owners didn't willingly give them up. Further if they *wanted* video/photographic evidence, why were they trying to block the cameras in the first place?
They could have been simply mistaken about the BART cameras but in light of the circumstances it seems unlikely.
I counted two officers watching Oscar get shot for no apparent reason and one watching him get hit for no justified reason. In my world, they would apply the same deductive reasoning to determine if it was justified the same way they would do with anyone else and either arrest the offending officer or at least bench them until their motives could be properly ascertained. - Esquandolas, on 01/28/2009, -1/+4http://www.officer.com/web/online/Top-News-Stories ...
Go raise some hell. This is why cops do this ****. They obviously do not learn anything from their "mistakes". I will admit this story fell to the back of my mind. After seeing this today and doing a google search for an update, I'm just as furious as ever. - kismetropolis, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3And the truly tragic thing is that the people who take "protect and serve" seriously? Their jobs are that much harder by these power trippers abusing the trust of their positions.
