- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -4/+160This is almost as ingenius as that time Mr. Burns tried to block out the sun over Springfield.
- Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+130This is an article where this overused sentence can really apply...
"Pics or it didn't happen!" - bashar129, on 10/12/2007, -5/+70/continuation(joke)
"Unfortunately it was a parabolic mirror and upon removing the tarp, the town square along with all its inhabitants were instantly vaporized. Mayor Midali was sentenced to a life sentence for 197 counts of homicide"
/continuation(joke) - jammink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+60Patrickfisher, I think that was a James Bond movie
- scottylist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35@Llanowar: http://italyfacts.blogspot.com/search/label/viganella
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31real human ingenuity would be building a town where there is sunshine....
- Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I definitely had to reread the name of the town a few times...
- crexor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29I believe this article is stretching the facts...just slightly. here is basically the same article minus the sensationalism http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2449727,00.html also http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4413580.stm , which includes two pictures along with the same story basically. this particular makes it sound like this is some special place in the world because it gets no sun, there are many places in the world that get no sunlight for even longer periods of times.
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30those crazy italians building towns in the dark and far below sea level. some say romantic, I say ill planned.
- alcimedes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26What good is a mirror going to do you in a land with no sun?
Thanks for playing. I hear Verizon is hiring managers, you might want to look into that. - iching, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Since the Alps have been settled by humans for thousands and thousands of years and having lived in the mountains I find this amazing that humans would choose this place as a settlement in the first place, knowing what winters would be like.
It was founded by a bishop and there was only a just a church there originally then people settle near the church.
Photo of the mirror and town here:http://italyfacts.blogspot.com/search/label/viganella - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I dugg you down, and I'm not gay...I just don't think those kinds of comments are needed more than once....And for the record, I'm digging down both of your comments

This link was posted below, but Patrickfisher was right:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/272103.stm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I think the title should be "How to scam money off EU structural funds for areas in risk of depopulation."
But maybe I'm just cynical. - pexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"A gaggle of women paraded in the tiny main piazza in their traditional dress, carrying baskets of hand-crafted shoes made from cannabis plants..."
The origins of this dude's crazy idea are clear now. Giant mirrors. Bitches. Weed. Bitches in weed dresses. Italy, here I come. - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"Yeah, I was about to say, what about the places that don't get any sun because the EARTH is in the way? Like northern Alaska for a couple months each year? How come they don't get a mirror?"
You make it sound like theres some government body stopping northern Alaska from getting a mirror. If they want a mirror, get a mirror. - mastertop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I don't know but the way the "news" is written, it seems to be a story for kids..
"""""""""
Most of his fellow residents simply shrugged, others thought he was mad.
"Oh yeah? And how do you intend to bring the sun to Viganella?" they would ask him.
"I'll build huge mirrors on the mountain to the north and reflect the sun's rays on to our village," he told them.
""""""""""""
Don't you think eh ?
(Even though it's true) - oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17here's a picture of the city from a mountain
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c6/Viganella.jpg - scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Since the dawn of time man has yearned to destroy the sun.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15PatrickFisher: That sounds a bit far fetched... Satellites are tiny in the sky, those mirrors would need to be massive to have even a slight effect.
(Maybe one too many Bond movies) - molsen311, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13human ingenuity at its best. congratulations little tiny crappy town!
- rmjb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So now we know where to put things when people tell us to stick it where the sun don't shine :)
- rmjb - PatrickFisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@ rompom7
There was going to be an array of them, but the test one I was talking about didn't work... Oh well, doesn't look like anyone believes me anyways. It's one of those things you'd only know about it you lived in a northern town. It was a big deal for us, in a place where SAD truly does run rampant.
PS: Ok, jammink, that was pretty funny. I guess you deserve a thumbs up... there ya go! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11i guess on the internet, we are one third our age when it gets to needing pictures in order to understand simple meanings.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9having lived in switzerland at the foot of such mountains, its not really that amazing, but its certainly nice... and very windy (some storms sound as if you are in the middle of a tornado!)
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here we're trying to lower the effects of the sun's rays in an effort to combat global warming. Now they're trying to bring more of it.
Next headline: "Small Italian city in the Alps destroyed after entire snowcaps of nearby mountains melt" - stacky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I believe it was called "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Didn't the bad guy in that one Bond movie have a sun mirror? I think it was "Die Another Day"
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8lol, Anti-Aircraft battery, not AA (double A) battery... I was confused for a minute
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I wonder how the original settlers of that area felt when November came around after building their first houses etc...
"lol, *****." - randall814, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6now although it is being referred to as a mirror, i can almost guarantee you that it isn't your traditional bathroom mirror made of glass. its more than likely an entirely metal structure that is machined and polished to give its reflective surface...like that bean/arch type thing in chicago.
if it was a traditional glass mirror, it would break long before a hailstorm. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Sorry PAtrick...but I think you are makiing that up. You hypothesis that you can't find it on the internet becuase it failed is ridiculous, since every other failure is well documented.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Here's an idea:
Move. - L0t3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"What good is a mirror going to do you in a land with no sun?"
DUH, they need a whole network of huge mirrors! - sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I personally would call it common sense, but to each his own.
- RobotKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But did that light help them discover the location of the Well of Souls?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/13/Maproom.JPG/800px-Maproom.JPG - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5this is not a new idea. the soviets toyed with the idea ever 8 years ago, using a space mirror to luminate cities from space
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/272103.stm - spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, there are places with more sun, but the thing here is that the town is sunless because of a hill, not high lattitude.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Technology. Bringing the gift of skin cancer since 2006!
- xister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Quote: "BTW, shouldn't we all send emails to the guy to congratulate him?"
Nice thought, but you think the guy has 'net access way up there? ;) - spanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having been to Switzerland and Northern Italy and seeing the whacking great holes they dig through mountains, whenever they feel like, the solution seems to be why not just take the top off the mountain to let the sun in?
you could push the rubble into the valley to make a better platform to build the town on instad of it precariously clinging to the hillside. I have heard the people in Viganella have one leg longer tha the other because of living on the steep hilsides.
Do I have to solve every problem in the world for people? - freecris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.comune.viganella.vb.it/ProgettoSpecchio.asp?IdMenu=689&App=0
In italian.
Last two pictures says "before" and "after". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone else think Viganella is a great name for a city!
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4from wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viganella
46°3′N 8°11′E
plug that into Earth, and you can see why they don't get any sun :)
yikes. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3then we'd have a swimming pool/ice skating rink....That's be cool...
- PabloIV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I giggled at that, made me feel a bit girly so I stopped
- packerbacker89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viganella
- PatrickFisher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Oops, mistake... digg me up
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A picture?
One guy tried to photograph the giant mirror...but ll he got was a photo of himself with a camera. -
