- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Bail outs for white collar only, blue collar need not apply. Well, blue if you do this, and that, then maybe we'll throw you a bone, nah never mind. White collar come on down, take what you need, have a party, collect your bonuses, have a nice holiday! Union workers make so much money, way more than the pencil pushing bankers. WTF is wrong with this picture- unbelievable!
- NinaOdell, on 12/12/2008, -1/+6The real story here the story here is that our Congress still can't get anything done, even in the midst of crisis.
There are excellent articles out there that detail how we're pretty much screwed whether the auto bailout out happens or not. Unfortunately, the cost is much greater in the long run if the big 3 fail. Among other things, it's one less product that the US will no longer manufacture and will have to by from foreign Countries. I'm no protectionist, but that a really bad thing (look at our dependence on oil). - ddoug1, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5goodbye auto bailout, hello economic depression
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5I don't think they are listening to the American people. While most people we're opposed to the Wall St. bailout, the country is much more divided about the auto loans, with a small majority in favor of them.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -2/+7The rumor that union workers are overpaid is a myth put forth by the Republicans who HATE unions. They only make around $3 more per hour, and when you adjust for higher cost of living in the North, they making about the same, maybe less than non-union workers in the South.
- tizzleG, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4INCONCEIVABLE!
- algaeturd, on 12/12/2008, -4/+8Isn't it ironic that it's fallen on the shoulders of the autoworkers? Amid all the waste and excess of the CEO pay and bonuses, the workers get pinned with the demise of the bill. Not saying it's right or wrong...just suspect.
- floejoe, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4I prefer to read history in books rather than live through it, it's less queasy.
- GinaJuice, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4Holy *****! I didn't want the bailouts to happen, but I really thought the big 3 were going to get their way. Since when did they start listening to the American people again?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Funny, this reminds of how the housing crisis is being blamed on low-income borrowers, instead of the banks that got rich off those risky mortgages. I'm sensing a pattern here.
- geekee, on 12/12/2008, -4/+5Union auto workers are overpaid relative to everyone else. This is one of the big reasons why the big 3 can't compete.
FTA
"He spoke shortly after Republicans left a closed-door meeting where they balked at giving the automakers federal aid unless their powerful union agreed to slash wages next year to bring them into line with those of Japanese carmakers.
...
The developments unfolded after Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky joined other GOP lawmakers in announcing his opposition to the White House-backed rescue bill passed by the House on Wednesday.
He and other Republicans said wages and benefits for employees of Detroit's Big Three should be renegotiated to bring them in line with those paid by Japanese carmakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan in the United States. " - joand315, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Hi Lee:
I bet you meant $30 per hour. What's important about UAW wages is that they set the standard against which other auto workers wages are set. With the UAW gone Southern workers will be paid much less. - joand315, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Princess Bride!
- geekee, on 12/12/2008, -3/+3Did you read your own article? Union workers are overpaid.
- MaynardJK, on 12/12/2008, -1/+1As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time they have gotten anything done in this fiasco.
Running your business into the ground does not entitle you to my money. - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -3/+2Finally!!! The Big Three must not be given even more government money. Bankruptcy is a far better option because it will allow them to restructure and become more efficient, or maybe sell or close a few branches of cars. It will allow them to get the UAW under control along with executive compensation for running these corporations into the ground. Tax payer money has no business going to a company so it can pay ridiculous salaries and compensations during a recession. If the Big Three got the money, it would only be a matter of time before they come back asking for more.
- Rocksaw, on 12/12/2008, -3/+1Dang it, I was really hoping the Pontiac Aztek would make a comeback. Such an elegant vehicle.
- charm803, on 12/12/2008, -4/+1So, they get paid more to make crappier cars?
- brandita, on 12/12/2008, -7/+1Automakers: I can not haz bailout?
