Fiji is a island near Australia, a pacific island, like Tonga or Samoa. There is also quite a large fijian population in Australia, and so many go back for the easter holidays.
Also, please go back to school. - doctorfungi, on 04/11/2009, -0/+17Fiji is a popular tourist destination for people in Australia due to its relative proximity. With the holiday season in swing, it's definitely a place of interest for Australians.
Read a ***** book instead of spending your days spamming away. - Albumen, on 04/11/2009, -1/+16Please do not post while drunk... It's bad for everyone.

- mindsnare, on 04/11/2009, -0/+12Gotta say I don't think I've seen more ignorant comments in one spot.
- mindsnare, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10You idiot. Fiji has had an unstable government for years. They've had more coups in the last 25 years than you've had hot dinners.
- Albumen, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10U R a Tard!
- Caalro, on 04/11/2009, -0/+9I went to Fiji last year. The small offshoot island resorts were great. They have a stable workforce that likes each other.
The main islands had a lot of bitterness between the native Fijian and the Indian populations. The former being the dirt poor majority and the latter being the 'exploiting the natives' 'own everything' minority. Think of how Southerner bigots think of New York Jews and you get an idea of the racial tensions. - diceau, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8Do you say stupid things just so you can be insulted later? Because trolling is only funny when it 'almost' makes sense.
- numeka, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5I'm in Fiji at the moment for Easter. Tourism here has just been very low pretty much ever since Frank Bainimarama started the coup in 2006 (plus with the floods and the recession which certainly don't help either...)
Hoping things will turn around soon, a lot of people are losing their jobs which just leads to more problems for the economy. Get your act together politicians! - laminarflow, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4I agree with Spitssphire. The red herring of antagonism between the races has been propogated by the old media; who are unfamiliar with the socio-political landscape of Fiji.
Prior to 2006 coup, Australia had invaded Fiji's sovereign territory and used SAS troopers to import weapons. After that, Black hawk helicopter crashed and SAS trooper died and helicopter pilot blamed for the crash. Where is the outrage in the media for that?
Fiji has abrogated a racist constitution, which disenfranchises the other races. It has become a degree in hypocrisy to hear the US, UK, Aust and NZ calling for instant democracy for Fiji; but only the Jim Crow type. The media again has missed that important point, for their own agenda
All this prodding from US, Aust, NZ et al is nothing to do with democracy or liberty. It is because of geo-political and geo-strategic reasons, and major shipping lanes run through Fiji's EEZ. Also, there is a fear that Fiji could move closer to China/India.
Aust and NZ also have used Fiji as a dumping grounds for sub-par food. Added to that Fiji is their biggest market in the Pacific. That means a drastic loss in trade, meaning that a loss of tax revenue for the coffers of NZ and Aust, already feeling the global depression. - jhoogy, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4The tap
- aussieNickuss, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2Indonesia and other southeastern Asian countries are our Mexico, not Fiji.
Oh, and New Zealand. /s - avatarpalin, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2Oh is it that time of year again??
- Spitsphire, on 04/11/2009, -0/+2The bitterness lies between the Native's themselves, its a joke. To show the outside world that the minority indians are the root cause of this problem, however majority of the land is owned by the natives and leased to the minority indians for a handsome royalty. I guess you have to live in the country to see for yourself. The media focuses on whats will get more ratings than showing the truth.. guess thats reality ...
- BloodWenis, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1Really? Isn't Fiji and the surrounding islands supposed to be paradise on Earth? Where as Mexico is pretty much one giant ***** taco...

Having read your comments I'm no more inclined to side with Fiji over the Australia media. - kspanks04, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1What will Truman Burbank do?!

- McNash, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1There are plenty of springs out there you should be fine.
- wobblejuice, on 04/11/2009, -0/+0Fiji needs a constitution which is fair towards all races. Good thing they abolished it. Many of the native chiefs get rich off the leasing of the lands and most of them don't even live in Fiji. It's these Fijian chiefs that want the constitution back so they can go back to plundering what the actual citizens should be allowed to own.
- simonn, on 04/11/2009, -0/+0Not really true.
Fijians are the land owners. Indians are the business owners, but are not allowed to own land. Fijians have the power. Indians have the money (relatively speaking, not compared to rich westerners).
The current coup can more or less be traced back to the ousting of the first Indian prime minister.
However, for the average Fijian (Indian or otherwise), the current coup makes no real difference to their lives. We were there staying with a (very affluent) Fijian family when Bainimarama took control a couple of years ago or so. - crowbarred, on 04/11/2009, -1/+1Poor Australians.
