- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50I don't think steve would like it....
- Aussie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47Howard was very close with Irwin. The larrikin made commercials for the Australian Govt on issues such as airport customs.
The amount of work Irwin did for the things he believed in, and, ultimately, Australia, was remarkable.
Unless the family disagrees, stay tuned for an Australian state funeral. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43The boy who never grew up... makes me proud to be an Australian. But to a greater extent, makes me want to live life like a big kid :)
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36Wartyboskfapped is just another digger. He wasn't 'close' with John Howard, he just used him for Ranting purposes. Wartyboskfapped is a weak & shallow man who isn't even close to understanding John Howard's joie de vivre. Wartyboskfapped should be ignored because he doesn't have an ounce of the lust for life & courage that John Howard had. Wartyboskfapped is a pussy, and his words don't honour John Howard one bit.
Well...some of them don't make sense now, but yeah, criticism is so easy to do, as long as there's no constructive ideas involved.
Everyone makes mistakes. If you couldn't see them, they spent their time hiding them. - Idugdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Sad News
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29This American is greatly saddened by the loss of such a great human. People said he was crazy, but I think it's the people who just trod through the drudgery of every day life that have lost their minds.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37I'm kinda pissed at that sting ray as Steve always said he loved animals and this is what he get in return?! ***** stingray.
- Aussie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25The Prime Minister's official statement in text:
http://pm.gov.au/news/media_Releases/media_Release2114.html
"I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Steve Irwin today.
Steve Irwin captured the imagination of Australia and the world through his television appearances as The Crocodile Hunter.
He entertained millions of people with an unconventional style that helped him become a household name around the world.
Steve was also a passionate environmentalist who used his television programmes and his award-winning Australia Zoo to promote a serious conservation message.
He made an extraordinary contribution to creating a widespread appreciation of the value and uniqueness of Australian wildlife.
Steve was a dynamic personality who will be greatly missed by his legion of fans in Australia and around the world. He will also be missed by the many charities and community groups he supported.
On behalf of myself and my wife and the Government, I extend to Steve’s wife Terri and their two children Bindi and Robert our deepest sympathy."

tribute on youtube from australian television - DyMndSkiR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Very sad to hear.
At least thanks to him for everything he did during his time on earth... - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15i remember when I was 12 watching reruns of the crocodile hunter on the animal planet. That show was awesome. RIP
- greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I'm honestly surprised he lived as long as he did...
At least he died doing what he loved... - krummb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I was pretty shocked to hear of this when I read the news this morning. Of course when anybody that early in life dies, it is always kind of a shock.
Not to be morbid, but this happened during filming, I wonder if this is going to be something they air down the road on a final/tribute show. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+28i woul pay a lot of money to eat the cooked flesh of the bastard stingray
- TDot1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dude, it probably wasn't the venom that killed him, so much as getting hit in the chest with it. People get stung by stingrays all the time, they're not really all that dangerous. I thought it was a joke when I saw a ytmnd of the news article saying he was killed by a stingray.
I guess it's the great irony of Steve's life... Wrestling with beasts that could easily dismember him and then killed by a relatively benign creature in the water.
So sad. - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8h6yXREbV0
Direct link to YouTube. Tribute to Steve Irwin from Austrailian TV. - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Leave politics out of this will you? Can't you do it for just one freaking day and pay tribute to a great, compassionate man??? Howard is a freaking PM of Australia. He speaks for all of Australia in tragic events like this. There is NOTHING political about this.
- KeyLimePie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+84744 diggs on the previous article is a testament to his popularity. You didn't need to be a wildlife fan to recognise his contributions to society.
I remember when he was on Leno recovering from a broken(?) leg. He was still as enthusiastic and energetic as always. He was one of the good ones. - Astrayred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8*Salutes*
- Oobitsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Amen brother! Irwin taught a lot about nature, but he taught even more on how to live.
- kledge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"CRIKEY"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Goodbye Steve. You will be missed.
- Asbradley21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Man, thats a shame. I used to watch him every day, I still tryed to see him as much as I could. Its really sad. Gonna miss ya, mate.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7very very sad - he was one of the good guys. No doubt about it , he'll be missed.
- TonySoRetro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I usually don't cry when reading sad news over the internet...today I have. God Bless You, Steve. My sincerest condolences to your family, friends, co-workers, etc. as well. This is a very sad day. I was an avid watcher over here in the U.S. and you lived your life like tomorrow was not promised to anyone. Gonna miss ya, mate.
- butterpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This Canadian is saddened by his death too. He certainly had a unique way of teaching the world about the uniqueness of Australian wildlife. He will be missed.
- rubygreenblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I agree. A lot of people did say he was crazy. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about him. He was a good guy. He cared for the environment, he brought a lot of enjoyment to so many people thru his work.
It's a sad loss for my home state, my country and the world.
I'll be wearing a croc-man khaki shirt to work tomorrow.
R.I.P croc man. - deputysalty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It wasnt the venom that killed him. The Stingray barb stabbed his heart and caused a cardiac arrest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Digg for great justice.
Along with Fred Dibnah, another olde-world just-do-it human left the planet. :( - dpower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He seemed to be a nutter, but he knew his stuff. Not your typical celebrity and I'm sorry to see him gone.
- rmmcclay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Steve was great fun. So much enthusiasm, so much love for life. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as entertaining and educational at the same time. Too, Steve helped me, as an American (living overseas) better appreciate Australia and Australians (even though I have many friends from Oz here in Asia).
His detractors will replay the photos of him, his one-month old son and a croc or
mention he was disturbing Antartic wildlife one time.
For the rest of us: we were blessed by having had the pleasure of spending time with the man.
Good on ya' Steve, for what you brought to the human party.
We love you. - jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While I'm disappointed that we (the world) have lost Steve Irwin, I feel most sad for his wife and child (children?). They obviously lost a great husband and father.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Goodbye Stevo. I wish I could have asked you which you would have preferred though - to swim off the great barrier reef - or to have had a little more time with your wife and kids?
I'm gutted. In a way I think you were a victim of your fame. You were a crock man and crocks were what you knew and what understood - but the people - and probably the TV execs too - wanted more and as a result they took you out of your element.
There are people who aren't supposed to die, people with such a love of life that they inspire us all - and who teach us what life is really for. You were one of these.
One thing is for sure - and that's that boy did you live! You lived a life and filled it with experiences that most of us could probably only ever dream of.
Goodbye Mate... The world is definately a lesser place without you. May you rest in peace. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5He did so much for the environment and loved it till the end. I thought he was a great Australian icon and don't know who could have represented our country better. RIP Steve.
- Sertorius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Steve Irwin brought much delightful edification of nature's critters to our household. May he rest in peace.
- fodder650, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And what a way to go. Filming a childrens segment. Not during his filming of Oceans Deadliest which he was working on earlier. And killed by something that isn't usually fatal.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This really surprised me. I remember swimming in a tank with stingrays at a tourist attraction in Hawaii, and all the information they provided indicated that they really weren't a danger. So, I looked it up in Wikipedia:
"When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up. This attack is normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks. Humans are usually stung in the foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. Fatal ray stings, such as that which killed Australian environmentalist Steve Irwin [1] are rare but can occur if stings puncture the heart or chest closeby causing complications related not only to its location but also poison in the barbs. Injuries to humans include, but are not limited to, venomization, punctures, severed arteries and possible death though extremely unlikely. Serious injuries from stingrays are uncommon." - j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He was beloved by Americans too and he will be missed. He was a good man and I had alot of respect for him.
- redsox32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4steve irwin was the man
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Steve Irwin was a one of a kind human being. A genuinely good man who loved his work and his family. He will be dearly missed!
- aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My daughter was a fan....since babyhood. I became one in the process...she will be very upset...Mr. Rodgers and now the croc man. I am upset because he wasn't just an actor...he was an educator to millions of children. Now his children will miss out on all he gave to the world's children...oh the painful irony.
- dollyknot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very much agree with you, especialy about Dibnah.
- googlemax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He should have never died. Steve Irwin was the face of Australia.
- t4k3n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Good old Johnny...
How good is it that one man can bring out such a strong response in every one.
R.I.P Steve - uttles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They're a lot more dangerous than people think. There are a lot of different varieties as well, some more easily-provoked than others.

Sad news. - ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When I first saw this guy a few years back I thought he was an idiot for harassing animals like that. But then I learned more about the guy and how much he actually cared about his critters and that he was for real. This guy had just figured out how to harness the power of showbiz to help his conservation efforts.
No matter how many legs you have, this is a loss.
Salute,,, - PhilH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A true legend. So sad for it to happen in such an unexpected way too.
Makes you hope that they have crocodiles in heaven. - Rhyso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Comments from Germaine Greer....
(link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/australia/story/0,,1865124,00.html)
Although she echoes a lot of the positive comments around regarding Steve, she makes some valid points that a lot of people seem to overlook...
"What Irwin never seemed to understand was that animals need space. The one lesson any conservationist must labour to drive home is that habitat loss is the principal cause of species loss. There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies. There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle. Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress. Every snake badgered by Irwin was at a huge disadvantage, with only a single possible reaction to its terrifying situation, which was to strike. Easy enough to avoid, if you know what's coming. Even my cat knew that much. Those of us who live with snakes, as I do with no fewer than 12 front-fanged venomous snake species in my bit of Queensland rainforest, know that they will get out of our way if we leave them a choice. Some snakes are described as aggressive, but, if you're a snake, unprovoked aggression doesn't make sense. Snakes on a plane only want to get off. But Irwin was an entertainer, a 21st-century version of a lion-tamer, with crocodiles instead of lions.
In 2004, Irwin was accused of illegally encroaching on the space of penguins, seals and humpback whales in Antarctica, where he was filming a documentary called Ice Breaker. An investigation by the Australian Environmental Department resulted in no action being taken, which is not surprising seeing that John Howard, the prime minister, made sure that Irwin was one of the guests invited to a "gala barbecue" for George Bush a few months before. Howard is now Irwin's chief mourner, which is only fair, seeing that Irwin announced that Howard is the greatest leader the world has ever seen.
The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."
Quite harsh but some fair points I reckon - I always thought he was cool guy but a bit irresponsible a lot of the time in the way he interacted with nature....but without doubt his intentions were honorable. - chadell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2his legacy will still live on...peace
