- BullHunter, on 01/06/2009, -10/+84Australia previous Prime Minister joined GW Bush and turned down the Kyoto Agreement, saying: "Australia wants to increase its carbon emissions". Not a very clever or diplomatic statement, indeed!
Australia is a huge exporter of fossil fuels and minerals. Unfortunately governments of the past have totally sold out to almost 100% foreign ownership of these mining companies. Needless to say, many of these companies (probably) now control sponsorship of the 2 major political parties - hence their policies and actions. - borez, on 01/07/2009, -5/+75Production of Coal by Country (million tonnes )
US: 1053.6
AUS: 373.8
Sorry but... pot, kettle, black ( literally ) - osmaker, on 01/07/2009, -18/+75Aussies are idiots on this.
They have one of largest and easiest sources of uranium to mine yet refuse to use nuclear for power due to outdated scares.
Go look at France folks, they've been doing nuclear power for years and guess what? The waste problem is solved, health issues are solved, etc. Use it. - nubnub, on 01/07/2009, -1/+56wtf, mate?
- doughnu7, on 01/06/2009, -16/+67I find it very hard to believe that Australia alone is having the biggest impact.
How about looking after your own backyard before peering over the fence. - Magnion, on 01/07/2009, -4/+53Population of 20 million and they're destroying the earth? What a joke.
- bews, on 01/07/2009, -5/+52AUSTRALIA .. F**K YEAH!
- poidh, on 01/07/2009, -7/+53Buried as alarmist *****.
- doublefelix, on 01/06/2009, -9/+53Wrong. If you've seen On the Beach you know Australia will be the last habitable place on the planet.
- WilliamWallace1, on 01/07/2009, -3/+46Australias is still like WTF?
- dtele, on 01/06/2009, -9/+47If Australia profited from these sales, I would agree that we have an obligation to limit the sales, BUT WE DONT OWN THESE MINES !!!
GUESS WHO DOES? - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+40I can't hear you... LALALALALALA
- SKKnuckles, on 01/06/2009, -4/+40Dont worry. When coal becomes soooo last century , we will be one of the largest uranium exporters in the world since we are sitting on the largest stockpile in the world. Then we can say we are helping the environment to become clean and green , quite literally i'm afraid
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -11/+44WTF? Australia has got to be a drop in the bucket compared to China and the US.
- goes211, on 01/07/2009, -2/+35Was this statement by NASA or the Onion?
- IphtashuFitz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+32Besides, that's also where Mad Max & Road Warrior take place.
- theone3, on 01/07/2009, -0/+31You mean prawns.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -4/+34Crikey!
- SkinnerBox, on 01/07/2009, -0/+29No one in Australia says that retarded *****.
- skywake, on 01/07/2009, -3/+30Take note you are talking about our previous PM there. The first things our new PM did were sign the Kyoto protocol and apologise for the stolen generation. By the way, it was the kyoto protocol that said Australia could increase its carbon emissions and that was one of the reasons our previous PM was against it. Rudd said he would sign it because he wanted to make an example for the US to follow.
This ***** stirring ATM is more because Rudd has said he will reduce carbon emissions by "between 5 and 10%" by 2020 instead of the 20% election promise he made. Something that I personally think is understandable given the ***** Bush has done to the global economy (he planned to use our surplus as a buffer for reducing emissions but now we have used our surplus to protect the economy!).
NASA should be blaming the US.... - borez, on 01/07/2009, -2/+28For those harping on about about per capita adjustment: OK, I'm one man, I own an Island with lots of coal, I export 100 tonnes of the stuff a year. Lets call my Island Coal Land (for the sake of a name)
Therefore if we adjust per capita/tonne of coal production:
(me) Coal land = 100
Aus = 17.5
China = 4.289
America = 3.477
Now by your logic, that makes me the most dangerous Co2 generating ***** on the face of this planet... I DON'T ***** THINK SO!
Hide behind doctored statistics all you want but... at the end of the day, America is way off the scale compared to Australia. Way off the scale. - rhepark, on 01/07/2009, -2/+28Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure that Australia's greenhouse emissions are fairly insignificant when compared to the USA's or China's. If these two countries don't reduce their emissions, what everyone else does is kinda irrelivent.
- doctordbx, on 01/07/2009, -1/+26Because the ad was made by Fosters for the US market.
You might also notice nobody drinks Fosters in Australia. - MokeyAUS, on 01/07/2009, -2/+27That's mainly cause we have even larger and easier sources of brown coal. The plants to use it are already in place too.
We're much happier to export the uranium and make a fortune with that.
Look at our economy at the moment, we're probably taking this financial crisis easier than anywhere else on the planet. It still hurts a bit, but compared to other countries we're fine.
The time will come when we'll have to stop using brown coal, but i'm not sure about it being replaced by nuclear. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+23"Australia wants to increase its carbon emissions".
Have you got a source for that? - DavidTurnbull, on 01/07/2009, -1/+23Haha, people are so gullible.
It's the drop bears you have to watch out for. - casualgod, on 01/07/2009, -1/+22Here is the actual letter. Australia is mentioned only once, listed amongst a number of other nations. News.com.au is the Australian FoxNews.com. Don't believe any of their ***** lies.
http://www.columbia.edu/%7Ejeh1/mailings/20081229_ ... - eTronicGaming, on 01/07/2009, -1/+22Oh come on, the Australian accent is so much more sexier than a "proper English accent".
- Petrarch1603, on 01/07/2009, -7/+27the Kyoto agreement was a joke
- dvsbastard, on 01/07/2009, -0/+20I never understood how that line became so popular when referring to us Aussies... People rarely ever refer to prawns as "shrimp" over here...
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+22Nuclear reactors require a great deal of water as I understand it, and Australia, I believe, has a bit of a tight squeeze as far as aquifers are concerned. Go look at the desert folks. Don't use it.
- notadiggtard, on 01/07/2009, -4/+23Maybe the dingos ate your climate
- lecturethis, on 01/07/2009, -3/+20....this is a knife!
- FirstStrike, on 01/07/2009, -0/+17What a joke! Yea Australia exports coal to mainly Asia (China) who burn it to produce energy and have no interest in developing ''clean'' energy sources hence the reason why they a new coal fired power plant comes online every two weeks.
Australia is a tiny country even if all of its domestic power was tomorrow produced 100% carbon free it would have no effect none on carbon levels world wide! - dvsbastard, on 01/07/2009, -1/+17On a technicality, mining of coal is not the significant cause of greenhouse emissions... it is the burning of it... which Australia does very little of seeing as the vast majority of coal is for export... so if you want to blame anyone, blame the off shore companies who are using it...
- grow, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15WTF Mate?
- Murdats, on 01/07/2009, -0/+14this is a garbage article where they take the one reference to australia where we are referenced with several other countries from an 8 page report and spin a story out of it
news.com.au = daily mail = telegraph - partrow, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15Hansen is an American kook and an embarrassment to the U.S. now that he is verbally attacking other countries with spurious and mythical charges.
The most unfortunate aspect is that he and the media are using "NASA" under his name to imply validity. His actions are besmirching all who promote him as a credible individual. - DavidTurnbull, on 01/07/2009, -0/+13Sweet.
Proudly Australian. :-) - FishHammer, on 01/07/2009, -8/+21So we're going to war with Australia next? I hear they have kangaroo mounted artillery. D:
- metroidragon, on 01/07/2009, -1/+14Don't worry; Canada is the world's leading uranium producer, accounting for a third of global production and 15% of global reserves. Australia is the next largest producer, with one quarter of global production and 27% of global reserves.
Except I am a supporter of nuclear energy, the only feasible green power source. - DavidTurnbull, on 01/07/2009, -0/+13That's a spoon.
- FirstStrike, on 01/07/2009, -0/+13Great we have now ratified Kyoto and excluded developing nations ie China , India from having to conform to Kyoto so they can burn all the coal they want and we can sell it to them with a clear mind ......... Great work Kevin
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -5/+17this thread is now pictures of baby dingoes
http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200708/r168382_628714 ... - jjalsop, on 01/07/2009, -1/+13Maybe you should go get drunk whilst protesting gay marriage and shooting rifles.
Wait, sorry.
Stereotypes are mean. - antechinus, on 01/07/2009, -0/+12We are very proud to be destroying life on earth as we know it. Australia is the world's largest supplier of carbon. Some of our esteemed customers are China, Japan and Korea.
Did you know that the 'clean coal' meme also originated in Australia. - FrozenGonad, on 01/07/2009, -1/+13Mr Burns?
- SkinnerBox, on 01/07/2009, -5/+17Hah, now you know how it feels to be an American, except that this is just one article. Try having every other country in the world CONSTANTLY calling you the bad guys and blaming all of the world's problems on you. How would you feel if you traveled abroad and everyone started calling you out for being from a country that exports too much coal? When people stop peeing over our fence, we'll see about returning the favor. Until then, let's just all try to solve our own very substantial problems.
- tama00, on 01/07/2009, -4/+15America?
- 4chanspy, on 01/07/2009, -17/+28Maybe they should put a few less shrimps on the barbie.
