- bosssmiley, on 07/09/2008, -2/+71I'm torn between likening it to Catch 22, or Full Metal Jacket:
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Private Joker, do you believe in the Virgin Mary?
Private Joker: Sir, no, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Well, well, Private Joker, I don't believe I heard you correctly!
Private Joker: Sir, the private said "no, sir," sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Why you little maggot, you make me want to vomit!
[slaps Joker]
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: You Goddamn communist heathen, you had best sound off that you love the Virgin Mary, or I'm gonna stomp your guts out! Now you DO love the Virgin Mary, don't ya?
Private Joker: Sir, NEGATIVE, sir! - TheAuditor, on 07/10/2008, -1/+57Basic Human Right: Freedom of religious belief. Atheism falls under this.
- avengingturnip, on 07/09/2008, -2/+48“People like you are not holding up the Constitution and are going against what the founding fathers...wanted for America!” Major Welborn said in an occupied foreign country. - Maybe he should read Washington's farewell address if he wants to know what the founding fathers wanted for America. He indicts himself with his own words.
- 3242130193, on 07/09/2008, -1/+45The officer didn't just "disagree" with him, he went a considerable bit further:
"Major Welborn told the soldiers he might bar them from re-enlistment and bring charges against them, according to the statement."
In my opinion, it's a bit more than disagreement, it looks more like a discrimination-based abuse of power. - lickmyback, on 07/10/2008, -6/+50America is both the most fundamentalist and militant state in the western world, it's a given that there will be overlap between the two. Hence you get things like religious fervor fueling the armies and militant christians in Waco.
- rhythmicdevil, on 07/10/2008, -6/+44People need to remember the atheism is the default state for a human. We are not born with a belief in any god or gods.
- godzillaWax, on 07/10/2008, -3/+38"Anti-Christian views"? So, not believing a Christian God means to espouse anti-Christian views? Muslims and Jews therefore, by definition, preach anti-Christian views when they practice their religion?
- Divals, on 07/09/2008, -1/+34The fact that it was a superior officer is what makes the difference between someone just being an ass and discrimination.
- StarofTroy, on 07/10/2008, -2/+33Thomas Paine routinely mocked Christianity saying that it's a parody of ancient Sun Worship. he wrote a whole 200 page essay about it.
- 3242130193, on 07/09/2008, -3/+32Washington was a deist, Jefferson and Adams were outspoken Atheists, among others.

- lazerflesh, on 07/10/2008, -3/+31This is not a church- this is the United States of Americas Military. You are to respect it and not drag its name into the ground with your religious ideals.
This is not a Christian country, we are a free state. To claim otherwise is to attempt to overthrow the definition of freedom. - staticneuron, on 07/10/2008, -1/+29What an ego! Just because this guy doesn't believe in the christian god doesn't mean he believes in "nothing".
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -4/+32Regardless of whether our forefathers were christian, catholic, deist, or atheist, one thing is clear - That they intended for The Untied States of America to be a completely SECULAR country. To say anything contrary is revisionism.
- d686, on 07/10/2008, -2/+28Let's forget atheists for a minute then. Guess what, the 1.8 billion muslims around the world are laughing at you right now for not realizing the great punishment awaiting you. How do you know you picked the right god?
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -1/+25what makes you think that the military cares about basic human rights?
- quez, on 07/10/2008, -2/+26Jefferson was a Deist as well. There are many examples of this. A letter he wrote to John Adams, for example, states:
'I can never join Calvin in addressing his god. He was indeed an Atheist, which I can never be...The being described in his 5 points is not the God whom you and I acknowledge and adore, the Creator and benevolent governor of the world; but a daemon of malignant spirit.'
The letter seems to imply that Adams believed in a supreme being as well. - lazerflesh, on 07/10/2008, -4/+28Our First Amendment cares. There's entirely way to many evil people with power that want to influence things in the name of one specific belief. Kind of odd that we are fighting Theocracy in Iraq, while we are building it here.
- DetpackJump, on 07/10/2008, -1/+24Atheism is the "default" view that there are no gods or other supernatural beings, because there is no evidence that they exist. The easiest way to think about it is that babies are born as atheists. They don't believe in any gods until they are taught whatever religion they happen to be born into.
Atheists don't get upset at people expressing beliefs, they get upset at people who try to force those beliefs onto others. - StarofTroy, on 07/10/2008, -2/+23Active??? as in "im going to beat the ***** out of you if you don't believe in my god?"
Read the article you ass. - inactive, on 07/10/2008, -6/+26here we go again.
- tennisjunkiie, on 07/10/2008, -6/+2511th Commandment- Keep thy religion to thyself. The problems will fix themselves.
- bratterscain, on 07/10/2008, -1/+19When I was in, I don't know what Constitution anyone else was fighting for but I fought for the one that gives us separation of Church and State, freedom from religious persecution, and freedom to express ourselves. Atheism is not believing in nothing. It is, to me, not exactly having beliefs but realizing scientific possibilities for those things we don't know yet or possibly, if at all, comprehend. And if we don't know, just stating we don't know and not making wild illogical assumptions.
- fadeout, on 07/10/2008, -3/+20Let me guess.. home schooled?
- Rotzooi, on 07/10/2008, -3/+19Atheism is not a religious belief. Just like not collecting post stamps is not a hobby. (credit: Richard Dawkins)
- KaiUno, on 07/10/2008, -15/+31Ah religion. I think Matt and Trey said it best: dumb di dumb dumb dumb.
- StarofTroy, on 07/10/2008, -1/+17The Flying Spaghetti Monster!
- mnpilot, on 07/10/2008, -13/+29Historically, No one kills people better than Christians and Religious nuts. So, I can see their point on keeping Atheists out.
- ahhell, on 07/10/2008, -1/+16Please replace "atheists" with "Christians" then your post makes sense.
kthx bai (*****) - sk11, on 07/10/2008, -1/+16Only a christian would interpret a report on christian bigotry as being christian persecution (anti-christian).
christian: you must join with us or suffer the consequences.
non-christian: no.
christian: WHY ARE YOU PERSECUTING US? - writeman, on 07/10/2008, -0/+15Being an atheist does not mean you believe in nothing.
Major Welborn needs a history lesson. Many of the founding fathers were NOT Christians, but Deists. And if you don't know what a Deist is, look it up.
Even those of our founding fathers who WERE Christian fully believed that this country should be founded on freedom of religion.
Welborn, as a commander, overstepped his authority, abused his power, and should be disciplined for it. - bratterscain, on 07/10/2008, -0/+15If you want to play that game, I'd say a real man, in this case, would stand up for his views and not be pushed around.
- XtheXlanternX, on 07/10/2008, -3/+18I was in the military and it was a problem. Every command and base I was at discriminated against Non-Christians/Jews and people who had alternative lifestyles like veganism, some in more obvious ways than others.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/10/2008, -0/+14At least Joker got promoted. Hall got passed over.
- crazyjake, on 07/10/2008, -2/+15the Atheist God needs to spread his message!
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -1/+14dude, wake up! There isn't any Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus or Jesus. Grow up!
- uberkling, on 07/10/2008, -1/+14But it is a religious CHOICE. Still covered under aforementioned basic human right.
- ReidFleming, on 07/10/2008, -1/+13Atheism is generically just "Without a belief in god(s)". It is not necessarily the denial of the existence of any (particular) god. There is often a division between 'strong' and 'weak' atheism. Strong is active denial and weak just a lack of belief.
Further, the 'strong' type is usually conditional on the specific 'god' or 'deity' being discussed. I might actively deny the god of the Mormon faith exists and yet not have enough knowledge to say the Lutheran god does or doesn't exist. In both cases, I don't believe in that 'god'. Even devout Christians hold atheistic views toward other gods. Maybe not all of them. I certainly know a lot of Baptists that actively deny the god of Catholicism exists. - mithrasinvictus, on 07/10/2008, -0/+12And yet, after their martyrs endured such cruel prosecution, christians apparently still fail to grasp the importance of religious tolerance.
- sk11, on 07/10/2008, -1/+13Ironically it's the same imaginary friend.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/10/2008, -1/+13Dont ask, dont tell?
- bjornski, on 07/10/2008, -1/+13Actually, the ability to read that book of fables you're banging on is what caused many atheists to reject those fairy tales in the first place.
Maybe you should try this "reading" thing sometime. When you finally get up to "critical thinking", you can ponder all your fairy tales and either choose logic or *****, finally making an educated choice.
"Faith" is the ability to ignore all facts and believe in something illogical.
I'll pick the logic and facts. You can keep the badly-written fairy tales. - JonGalt, on 07/10/2008, -1/+12probably? How about definitely?
- JQP123, on 07/10/2008, -6/+17In the religious wars to come (Iraq and Afghanistan are just the start), atheists should refuse to participate as conscientious objectors.
Let the Christians, Jews and Muslims send their children to fight it out and see whose imaginary friend is best. - sockpuppets, on 07/10/2008, -6/+17Is there a free video professor DVD for grammar?
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -1/+12All hail Athe! God of the Atheists!
- Otto, on 07/10/2008, -1/+11@uncertainty: Google for "An Essay on the Origin of Free-Masonry". Also read "The Age of Reason".
Good quote from Paine: "I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church. All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit." - lazerflesh, on 07/10/2008, -2/+12Great book. I have a bumper sticker from something the author wrote.
" When Fascism comes to America it will come in the form of a cross wrapped in the flag. " - bratterscain, on 07/10/2008, -0/+10I'd have to agree somewhat but when you're a low rank and piss off higher ups, then go to higher ups for whom may side with them, then you're up ***** creek for a long time. It's not a job where you can be fired or quit at any time, so you got to cover your ass. If you're not in good with the higher ups or have something which is disagreeable to them, there's a certain amount of censoring they can do to you, whether it's justified or not by military code.
cliff notes - If you're ***** for rank and do something which can defy higher ranking soldiers in the unit, the harder it will be for that complaint to go through. And don't forget, you could be with those guys for years and they can make it hell. -
