Just because people died in a country you don't like doesn't mean they still weren't human and this isn't a tragedy. - casspa, on 07/15/2009, -14/+79Thoughts and prayers are with their families.
- lolwatermelon, on 07/15/2009, -1/+52On 9/11/01 Iranians had a candle light vigil to pray for the dead Americans.
Let the governments hate each other, why can't the civilians be civilized? - xsecretfiles, on 07/15/2009, -8/+42....and CNN breaking news story "Sotomayor, lawmakers arrive for confirmation hearings."
- pathouston22, on 07/15/2009, -11/+40I'm sure Iran will find a way to blame America for this
*reads the AP story*
Yup. - beabbott21, on 07/15/2009, -0/+28"third major airliner disaster in seven weeks has brought to 548 the number of deaths in accidents so far this year. Last year the worldwide total was 577 and in 2007 it was 865"
According to those numbers, were significantly above the trend line so far this year. - mickstephenson, on 07/15/2009, -0/+20To be fair the idea of holding a candle light vigil was promoted by the government of Iran at the time, as Khatami was in power at the time who was attempting to create a more amiable political environment with the west and was doing well until Bush and his cronies ruined the whole process by needlessly labeling Iran the "axis of evil" and ruining the efforts of Europe and the most liberal pro-western leader Iran has ever had and is ever likely to have again for the forseeable future.

- fandyboy, on 07/15/2009, -1/+17I don't think they'd bother quite frankly, plane crashes rarely cause a sense of national unity, more a sense of "oh, that's sad for those people I have no affiliation with, I'd better get on with my life".
- Zeigy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16Fortuitous as well. Don't forget the Hudson River landing.
- vrikis, on 07/15/2009, -2/+18Let's hope this is the last one for a while. This year has been awful for plane plane crashes and malfunctions.
- dahatecatalyst, on 07/15/2009, -5/+20Nobody should go through such anguish. My condolences and heart goes out to the families and loved ones.
Why the recent spike in plain crashes? Is this coincidence? Is the media reporting these more? Or is their a growing trend? - rocknog, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13If you think flying is dangerous, stay the ***** away from cars. Rationally speaking, if one were to look at the number of deaths from car crashes vs. the number of deaths from plane crashes, we should be ***** ourselves at the prospect of getting in a car.
- donkylips, on 07/15/2009, -3/+15Rest in Peace, fellow Armenians
- paigeinphilly, on 07/15/2009, -1/+13is it me or is there like a plane crash a month...scary stuff...prayers go out.
- PowderedToasty, on 07/15/2009, -0/+11A surge in gremlin populations.
- skinny01, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12Technically speaking yes, and of course there will be more car deaths with their being more cars on the road. But you have more personal control over your car and more of an ability to avoid a deadly accident. I'll take having my life in my hands over somebody elses any day. Car crashes also come from idiots that don't belong on the road driving or fluke accidents but you have more control over affecting potential crashes like staying away from people driving crazy, driving defensively and smart, etc...more options to potentially live. When you're a mile in the sky and the plane breaks down and crashes, you die, no other options for you. In a car crash, you may or may not, depends on the severity. Once that planes in the air, you're pretty much guaranteed to die if it comes down.
What we should be looking at is what the probability is of surviving an accident in both cases. If there's a functional mishap mid-flight, you can't exactly just pull the plane over and fix it or wait for repair like you can in a car. - HEAVYisSPY, on 07/15/2009, -0/+11racist *****, ***** you.
/Iranian Atheist - wolfing, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10hopefully just coincidence, or maybe there could be something else... recession and hard competition might make some companies trim their payrolls... I hope it's not that.
- solistus, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10KungFooJesus put it poorly but he's right that the confirmation hearing for one of the nine people controlling arguably the most powerful institution in the US is a 'bigger story' than a plane crash. In terms of impact on other events and most peoples' lives, it's no contest. It's sad, sure, but I don't really mind if I fail to hear about a far away plane crash. The same cannot be said for a Supreme Court nomination.
- RogueGenius, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10What a *****.
- mitikomon, on 07/15/2009, -2/+11I was thinking the same: " whom they will blame now?"
- GRAVEWiSH, on 07/15/2009, -5/+14Yet MJ still dominates the news...
- fandyboy, on 07/15/2009, -5/+13That's *****, they are free to buy russian planes and parts as far as I can tell. I think it's fair that the US doesn't want Boeing parts being sold seeing as they are called the Great Satan by the regime.
RTFA
"Caspian Airlines, however, uses Russian-made Tupolevs whose maintenance should not be impaired by American sanctions. " - odnaryperson, on 07/15/2009, -8/+16all of our celebrities are dying and our planes are crashing
- DeMarki, on 07/15/2009, -5/+13In before "The US did" statements of Iranian authorities.
- PowderedToasty, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8But plane crashes are ***** scary!
- cygnus2112, on 07/15/2009, -4/+12Caspian Airlines is a joint Iranian/Russian venture. The sanctions have NO EFFECT on Caspian Airlines or the Tu-154s. How hard is that for you to understand? Are you that ignorant and stubborn that you have to try to blame the crash on the US somehow?
Here's an idea. What if Iran didn't waste so much money on ramping up a nuclear standoff in the Middle East, that they could pay for Boeing parts and possibly not be under sanctions? - expertsSEO, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8This is really Sad ! In past few months, there have been some frequent plane crashes. Let's Pray for the souls of those killed in the tragedy.
- spoer, on 07/15/2009, -3/+10If it's not Boeing I'm not going.
- ProfessorLX, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6rAmen
- gepetos, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7My Co-Workers mother was killed in that plane crash. Her mom was going to her son's wedding in Armania, she was talking about it all yesterday and this morning we saw it on the news...she had no idea yet. We called her husband and he had just found out as they had called him from Iran. He just came and told her and she's in shock and tears.
It's beyond sad and devastating :( - HEAVYisSPY, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6I'm glad you know that everyone on that plane was a hardline Muslim, a religion separated in ridiculousness to yours only by a few hundred years of (thank the flying spaghetti monster) increasing Western secularism.
And I'm glad you have secret knowledge about our president's religion, IT'S ALL A CONSPIRACY, RIGHT?
I'd wager you're no classical conservative, you're more likely an ignorant neocon. As an American citizen with the right to vote, your anti-intellectualism, superstition, and hate have brought shame on conservative philosophy. You embarrass America, land that I love. Your blind hatred got a fiscally irresponsible man elected - think on that! Based on your comment history, you likely have more in common that that foul Ahmadinejad and Khomeni than I do, despite the color of my skin.
I apologize if I am getting angry, I do not appreciate racist comments, even if you claim not to be racist. - jorisb, on 07/15/2009, -12/+18Prayers... they don't do much.
This plane, Tupoleve 154, is actually above average for safety. Apparently the tail caught on fire, and crashed while looking for a place to land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caspian_Airlines_Flig ... - thatsgoodkarma, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6............................................________

- veriix, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8For those who know the msm conversion of this it equals: 5 Americans or 1 celebrity dui arrest.
- 3The3Dude3, on 07/15/2009, -3/+8And we're just informing you that you are misinforming others.
- Coven, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Generally it is safest to fly after an incident when the airlines are scrambling to conduct every safety check they can think of. What you want to do is fly on the same type of plane that the incident occurred on.
Honestly, it is still the safest way to travel, and I will gladly continue to fly when I can afford it.
I'm flying to Atlanta later this summer on AirTran and I'm looking forward to taking advantage of finally being able to surf the internet from 30,000+ feet up. - abd1231, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6MJ is dead??
- bryanc1, on 07/15/2009, -13/+18No disrespect or offense intended, but...would the Iranian Government be incapable of doing something like bringing down a plane to take attention away from the election fiasco while inducing a sense of national "unity", to try and get the protestors focused on something else?

Thoughts and prayers. - HEAVYisSPY, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5they always do. I think if the people were free misunderstandings would be less frequent. I was hoping for an Iranian revolution...but now it just doesn't seem likely. : /
- zip000, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5I had the same thought. I'm not suggesting it's true by any means, but I the thought, "I wonder if that plane was loaded with opposition leaders" crossed the mind of more than a few people.
- solistus, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4You don't know much about the world outside the US and Western Europe, do you? Iran is hardly a 'developing country.' They rank 28th in the world by GDP, above countries like Denmark and Finland. Not extremely wealthy, and a much lower per capita than the States, but their economy is plenty 'developed' and they have modern infrastructure.
Also, the airline was a joint venture with Russia (as in the superpower, not a third world nation by any stretch), and from TFA, if blame is to be assigned anywhere it's shoddy and/or black market Russian parts that caused the problem. The parts were all Russian as Iran is under US sanctions and can't buy its own equipment (thus the joint venture, probably). - HEAVYisSPY, on 07/15/2009, -9/+13Why do you people bother? Clearly God doesn't exist, is constantly asleep on the job, or laughing his malicious ass off.
bury me, you know it to be true.
It also pisses me off that you credit 'good engineering' to 'miracles' and blame 'bad engineering' when people die. The concept of god is immune from criticism. -
