- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+92and crumpets.
- lebe0024, on 10/12/2007, -2/+78Most modern nuclear subs don't refuel. In fact, the brother of a friend of mine was the nuclear officer on a US sub, and he said you'd have to cut the hull open to refuel it!
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52That whale looks an awful lot like a submarine....
- never102, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36The crew would also, ya know... go insane
- Mofo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Any modern nuclear sub can do this. US subs all have desalinization plants on board and air purifier/filtration systems. A Russian typhoon even has a small swimming pool on it (might have been the class the Kursk was in, not sure).
- Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31>They can't stay under for nearly that long since they'll run out of tea.
As a Brit, I can't tell you how much that made me laugh. Best first post I've seen in ages. - swinglehurst, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34"food is a submarines biggest challenge..." Hahaha. Thats so dumb.
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Seriously - why don't they set up a compartment full of UV lights, algae and soy?
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23If whales looked like that, I would be a lot more afraid of them... And Free Willy probably wouldn't have been as enjoyable.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21No, its just the subs don't travel through land. They have to go around these things called continents sometimes.
- Lister169, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20"What's this rushing towards me...it's big and round...it needs a round sounding name...round...groun...GROUND...that's it, ground...I hope it will be friends with me..."
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20If they had a way of scooping up fish as they went, and maybe had a garden inside, it might be interesting to see how long they could go independent of land.
- weeeezzll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@mofo
Wow...of all of the things I might miss, and want to do while being stationed on a submarine; swimming in a pool would probably be on the very bottom of the list... - OneLess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Almost dugg for using the word "astute" until I clicked and saw that it was the name of the sub.
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Care to explain how to fit an acre of crops(probably more to feed the whole crew) inside a submarine?
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Anyone else think that the "action" shots look a little.... CG?
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So they already know the maximum distance it can travel? I guess the odometer on this thing counts DOWN, not up.
- vroom101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Picture: U.S. Navy "Iron Whale" Rushing to the Surface A.F.A.P.
http://chamorrobible.org/gpw/gpw-20060917.htm - badtiki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Thats cool and all, but our subs kick ass - My wife and I just recently got an apartment on a river next to the largest sub base in the world. They pass by daily and to see these monsters live is just incredible. I have one video up, a sub running on diesel going back to the sub base for repair - http://youtube.com/watch?v=iAkP87sSlDc I have a few others I will post tonight
- codegator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Actually, it doesn't look anything like a whale... The submarine is cool but the title of he post is misleading - dig down! :o(
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11That's no whale, it's a submarine!
- AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The space shuttle does NOT have a nuclear reactor, nor do any satellites.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioisotope_thermoelectric_generator - jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Actually, boomers do not need to surface to fire ICBMs or other missles. They can fire from as deep as 150 ft.
- uncopyrightable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Surely 7 billion dollars worth of real whales shot out of cannons into North Africa would cause a lot more damage?
I mean, accuracy isn't an issue when you're projectile is 180 metric tonnes. - MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Don't kid - tea is antiscorbutic.
- BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've seen them being built, you would not believe how unbelievably ***** huge that shed is.
I honestly can't convey to you how big it is.
You stand on the balcony on one side and look across the width of the building at what looks to be a sign the size of those adds at footy matches, but then you notice there is one on your side of the shed too, and it's 3 stories high. - hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yes, somewhat inaccurate. Not to mention that most nuclear submarines only need to be refueled every 10-15 years.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"No, its just the subs don't travel through land."
No, they just go under them. :)
*Yes, I'm just joking* - BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We don't consume the nitrogen. Just breathe it out again, you just need to scrub the CO2 away, and add a little O2.
Much much much cleverer people than you are at work on this problem. - BigglesPiP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ahem, H2O -> 2 H2 + O2. Get the drift?
They will starve tho. - Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The newest British Royal Navy's submarine looks like a giant whale"
If they could get the crew to eat like a whale, they'd never have to surface. Yum krill..... - UKsHaDoW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The sub uses propulsors, instead of screws.
Think jet ski. - TheUngod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think insanity may be a bit of an issue as well. Um...cabin fever? If they were down there a few years at a time, the crew might go a bit mad.
- lexington86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Could someone please explain to me how this thing looks like a "giant whale"?
- Travisty2012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"never need to be refuelled throughout its 25-year lifespan, meaning it can sail round the world 40 times without surfacing."
25/40 = 0.625
Does that mean it takes 7.5 months for this thing to do one trip around the world? I thought subs were faster than this? - fugeelama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Doesn't look that much like a whale to me...
Anyone else read the title hoping for a sub that looked like the one from seaQuest? - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Oh not again"
- lodleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Refueling is with one L... someone had to say it
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@salgat
The food would have to be primarily fish. They would only really need enough fruit or vegetables to get the vitamin C needed to prevent scurvy. They might be able to get enough by placing potted plants on shelves in an artificially lit closet.
Failing that, they may be able to learn to eat some of their fish raw as a way of getting vitamin C.
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/010119.html - nhaas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Rose? hell that will sink, and blow up!
- rudy23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Is the name a tribute to Rosie O Donnel?
- badtiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok, just uploaded this one - Took this one on a bright sunny day so the video is nice and clean
http://youtube.com/watch?v=IlGhG9VVTqw - richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In response to AnotherBrian about nuclear satellites your not accurate, the Russians have put up a few Nuclear Battery powered Satellites, the Russians love nuclear power everywhere, there are even nuclear battery powered lighthouses in Russia.
As far as the Sub it isn't anything special, aside from food a sub can produce everything it needs air, water and power while underwater. Only thing that can really change is the designs. - LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was taken off Oahu, doing the same thing the USS Greenville did when it hit a japanese fishing boat and killed some people.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only limiting factor of a submarine's submersion in the US navy is the food stores of it's crew.
- nakile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But what about the Nitrogen?
Sure, a human can take pure oxygen, but they better be careful about causing some sparks. - boojew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ahem. Where the heck is the engine? Is that why it never needs refueling?

IT'S RED OCTOBER!!! - RawkBob, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/EquipmentAndLogistics/CountdownBeginsToAstuteLaunch.htm - some more info on them...
- RawkBob, on 02/13/2009, -0/+1They do get refueled.
