- tinkerthinker, on 03/18/2009, -28/+375This sounds like a test to see if the people will object or not.
- kemp34, on 03/18/2009, -10/+260One shooter and the ARMY is called onto American streets?
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -6/+231Even the Army knows this was a violation of Posse Comitatus.
- vfr800serenity, on 03/19/2009, -11/+131I'd like to see the brass at the Pentagon come down hard on those responsible for this, as well as all the commissioned officers involved. They all know better, they know it is illegal and a violation of posse commitatus, and they all need to be made examples so that the next time someone thinks they can put their toes over the line they think more than twice. It should be their careers for this mistake.
All the commissioned officers should see courts marshal for this, and they should throw the book at them as hard as they can. The non-coms should be reprimanded as strongly as possible and discharged. They know better too.
There are REASONS why there are laws against this. We don’t want to end up like all the banana republics in the world with military coups every once in a while and ending up putting military generals as dictators.
This is a serious offense and should be treated as such RIGHT NOW before this crap becomes commonplace and accepted. - clvngodess, on 03/18/2009, -11/+98You know, I can barely get cops to show up when I need them. And there's shooting and crap going on where I am, all the ***** time. One guy goes postal and these people get the ***** ARMY? First I'm scared ***** by this prospect. Secondly, I'm pissed off because I can't get a cop when I need one. What time is it? Must be 4 O'Clock somewhere. Nurse!
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+66Of course it was a test. They tried to pull off a house to house search not too long ago but it was called off. It was supposed to be a training exercise a.k.a."whatever terrorism excuse they used to get people used to a military presence, and equipment.
- robehren, on 03/18/2009, -7/+65Scary thought. Thanks for making me lose even more sleep.
- harryr, on 03/19/2009, -4/+59This was obviously a contained zombie outbreak. Wake up people.
- clvngodess, on 03/18/2009, -3/+55Yeah... what the hell is that about?
- kp998, on 03/18/2009, -11/+53How can they not know? FTA:On March 10, after a report of an apparent mass murder in Samson, Ala., 22 military police soldiers from Fort Rucker, Ala., along with the provost marshal, were sent to the city of Samson,” Harvey Perritt, spokesman for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at Fort Monroe, Va., told CNSNews.com on Monday.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+43Apparently the Patriot Act is a violation of the constitution.
- Jynx97, on 03/19/2009, -9/+50I was told when I was a child that the US was "better" than other countries because we didn't so this sort of thing.
(Along with torture, imprisonment without charge or counsel, checks and balances, domestic surveilance, etc...) - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -8/+45The US Army has launched an investigation in "why" they did NOT know? Did I read that right? They KNEW, they are covering their asses that is all. Now that there is public outrage and awareness growing they are backtracking liking wounded DOGS! They are like children give them an inch and they take a MILE! Enough already.
- 7thWatcher, on 03/19/2009, -17/+52Violation of the Posse Commitatus? Apparently you haven't read the Patriot Acts. Ignorance is not bliss.
- Waiting2awake, on 03/19/2009, -7/+36Where as those that think a jewish zombie, who is his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
That is rational? - jamdogg, on 03/19/2009, -2/+30Nothing to see here, move along please.
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 03/19/2009, -8/+35Unfortunately, thanks to the Patriot Act, this use of the Army is legal if there is a terrorist threat.
I'm not saying this is right, it's wrong on many levels, it's just that all this outrage is wasted because it's likely that no one will be punished for it.
Like another commenter said, this is likely a test to see if anyone bitches. Sounds like no one did at the time. Very scary. - goodinohio, on 03/19/2009, -3/+29A 5 man police department can deploy troops? What if they want air strikes?
- RealistPie, on 03/19/2009, -0/+25The Patriot Act didn't give them the authority to do that either.. Please read the damn article. Here's the some help.
"The troops were apparently not deployed by the request of Alabama Gov. Bob Riley -- or by the request of President Obama, as required by law.
When contacted by CNSNews.com, the governor’s office could not confirm that the governor had requested help from the Army, and Gov. Riley's spokesman, Todd Stacy, expressed surprise when he was told that troops had been sent to the town.
No request from President Obama, meanwhile, was issued by the White House--or the Defense Department."
The law includes the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act helped add power to the president, in that he can control the states national guard in an emergency, without the approval of the govener, among other things. - yarcod, on 03/19/2009, -3/+28The army investigating itself. Sounds unbiased to me!
- vmass20, on 03/19/2009, -2/+25It only takes one word to describe it: Conditioning
Get ready... - ismhmr, on 03/19/2009, -9/+32If you knew anything about current events unreg, maybe your head wouldn't be so far up your ass.
It is called martial law, and we are one staged terrorist attack away from America becoming Fascist. - caution, on 03/19/2009, -4/+23It is indeed a shame. I retired from the military after 20 years.
Since I was a private, I have watched as more and more "demands" were issued for domestic use of federal troops. I don't care if it is something big, like Katrina, or something small, like this event, we should never allow "domestic support to civilian authority" to be taken lightly.
When storms (or forrest fires or whatever) threaten, the feds are now leaning so far forward due to political and populist pressures, it's as if the troops are now a domestic 911.
They shouldn't be. Sadly, people seem to think the military is the only entity that can ever get the job done-- and no one wants to pay the bill to fix the National Guard, a force that has been rusty or broken as long as I can remember. - dancantone, on 03/19/2009, -3/+22Army Investigating How and Why Troops Were Sent Into Alabama...and meanwhile the public gets used to and conditioned to the idea of military occupation.
Google: Posse Comitatus Act
WIKI:
The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385) passed on June 16, 1878 after the end of Reconstruction, with the intention (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) of substantially limiting the powers of the federal government to use the military for law enforcement.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act - peaceninja, on 03/19/2009, -6/+25The flying spaghetti monster will rain down hot tomato sauce in the end times, and your face will be filled with boils and you will be screaming in agony wishing that you never believed in zombie jesus.
I'm very satisfied that I know the Truth. Ramen. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -9/+28The point is they are trying to determine the chain of events that lead to the soldiers winding up in Samson. Who gave the orders, who was in place to have possible questioned the orders. You know, responsibility.
Kind of like that armed cruise missile incident from last year. You know, the one where the Diggers were so quick to assume it was some kind of harbinger of a Red Flag incident and blamed Bush.
Duh. - vfr800serenity, on 03/19/2009, -2/+21I can't speak for Conservatives or Republicans because I'm a Libertarian. I was bitching about that just as hard as I'm bitching about this.
It's not about scoring political points. It's about securing Liberty from those who would use our rights as bargaining chips to get a leg up on some political game, just to get a first down or re-election. - theonlywizdum, on 03/19/2009, -8/+26Correction: One shooter and a few MPs from the ARMY were called onto the American streets?
- theos13, on 03/19/2009, -2/+19The sad truth is that the last administration got rid of Posse Comitatus while nobody was watching. Read through some of the fine print of the Patriot Act and the other fine pieces of legislation the Bush Regime ran through Congress. And I'm not even blaming them completely cause nobody on the other side of the aisle stood up to stop them from doing it. It won't end well for us if we as a nation stay silent and let this go unpunished.
- JenX1985, on 03/19/2009, -16/+33We are entering the age of a police state. I know a lot of you think it's *****... nope... it's happening. Remember when Katrina happened and the cops started taking peoples guns away? Notice how so many cops are now murdering/tazering people willy nilly?
We'll live in a police state, cameras watching our every move, the government knowing every little thing about us, but hey! Pot might finally be legal!!! Right?
Bleh. - GrandmaSheila, on 03/19/2009, -11/+28What the *****?
- Hoddor, on 03/19/2009, -1/+18"With Bush it was a Right-wing take-over, now I'm guessing it's a commie take-over..."
Nope, it's still the same 'shadowy group', or banking cartel, depending on your perspective. It's just a new puppet pres... - wtrwlkr, on 03/19/2009, -0/+16The fact that it happened in Alabama doesn't have anything to do with what happened. The troops were active duty U.S. Army, not Alabama National Guard. Consequently, the leaders of the state don't fall into the unit in question's chain of command.
To be honest, it looks like some high-ranking ***** wanted to get a medal so he ordered the troops to the scene of a crime that gained international attention. Hopefully, once an investigation is performed, said ***** will find himself alittle less high-ranking. - vfr800serenity, on 03/19/2009, -1/+17It is a crime to follow an unlawful order.
Period.
The UCMJ makes this abundantly clear. I'm not some "random angry person." I'm prior a service combat arms NCO. MOS-19D (look it up).
"Just following orders" hasn't stood the courtroom test since Nuremberg cleared that up for all time. And yes, they teach all about lawful and unlawful orders to Officers, NCO's, and even junior enlisted in basic training.
They ALL know better.
They all should be punished to the full extent of their crimes. - whoreable, on 03/19/2009, -0/+15They need a majority vote of 3/5 officers for that. But 2/4 will suffice if one is out on a doughnut run.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+16How the hell don't they know who authorized what? You don't just send in the Army without someone knowing about it. Especially if it isn't a big time thing. The police were able to handle that situation. I don't need to see armed military on the street corners of my town (ala Washington). *shiver.
- nicc, on 03/19/2009, -0/+14the article says that the Police Dept did NOT call the Army.
they dont know who called them and that is what they are trying to find out. - jsffive, on 03/19/2009, -4/+18They're conditioning people to think that it's perfectly acceptable to allow the army in our towns and cities.
It wasn't enough that our sons and daughters were being used to police people in Iraq. Soon, they will be used to police Americans. - Slizzo, on 03/19/2009, -1/+15What should have happened is the police chief/lieutenant should have contacted his mayor, the mayor in turn the Governor, and the governor activate some National Guard soldiers to help with the issue. And the Nat'l Guard troops SHOULD be in uniform to perform their work.
Active Duty troops should not have been sent out into the city, no matter their proximity to the area where they were having issues. - Hurricane, on 03/19/2009, -4/+18... and the end of freedom draws even closer ...
- bb5999, on 03/19/2009, -0/+13There are two possible ways that this happened.
1) Federal government, new world order, end of freedom and so forth
2) Local good ole boys.
"summuvabitch, General, we gots some bastahd shootin' the helloutta the place. Can't ya'll just send sum of ya'lls boys down here to hep out!!!!"
"ah, awright, Sherrif, but if'n anybody says sumthing, I ain't had nuttin to do with it." - shnizep, on 03/19/2009, -1/+14Eliminate the Patriot Act.
- Qeveren, on 03/19/2009, -1/+13I don't think "I was only following orders" actually gets you out of breaking the law, though, does it?
- algaeturd, on 03/19/2009, -0/+12And of course, they didn't. Americans are dumb enough that they were easily conditioned to think that ANYthing the military does is always the right and just thing. They will not question it no matter what it is and they will not try to stop it.
It IS a violation of federal law clearly.
America could be taken over like stealing candy from a baby. You wouldn't even get a whimper out of Americans. They are lazy enough, spoiled enough and dumb enough to do exactly what they're told when they're told. Period.
There is no need to do further testing if this was indeed a test. - ChristopherShwn, on 03/19/2009, -1/+13Then the governor should have called the National Guard, then it would have been legal, and that's one of their purposes. Yea, it’s nice to help out, but it’s setting a bad precedence.
- nebben, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11Keep our beloved troops off of our streets. Period. Unless "Mars Attacks" becomes real, "Red Dawn" is realized, or when Canadian+Mexican tanks are advancing towards DC, I don't believe ANY reason should warrant active duty troops to act in ANY capacity on our streets. When a soldier arrests or shoots someone, to whom is he accountable? Not in my town...never.
- xixphz, on 03/19/2009, -1/+11RAmen.
- Semblance, on 03/19/2009, -19/+29Hey, where were conservatives when Republicans were trying to make this kind of activity legal?
- KevinMalone, on 03/19/2009, -8/+18I guess the Army wanted to send troops to Georgia, but couldn't get it right
- bayoureader, on 03/19/2009, -0/+10Plus an army dude doesn't have to treat you humanly, read you your rights etc. He is at once the judge, juror, and executioner. Army deployed in city = no civil rights.
