- Tangaroa, on 05/31/2008, -18/+81Props to Time Magazine for just now learning that Iran has elections.
Next week's Time headline: Are Bush's days numbered? - Splitter402, on 05/31/2008, -4/+58Too bad Ahmadinejad has no real power as it lies with the Council of Guardians and Supreme Leader. He is really just a mouthpiece.
- zephyr42, on 05/31/2008, -0/+24What people don't realize is that the regular people of Iran != iranian government or its officials. The people are fed up with the puppet regime.
- anukis, on 05/31/2008, -6/+29Best news out of Iran in a long time. Hopefully his replacement has more sense.
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/31/2008, -3/+24Even if Ahmadinejad loses his position it won't mean a whole heck of a lot to the rest of the world. The conservative clerics are still in full control of Iran. The president of Iran basically has control over internal issues only but not things like foreign policy, the military, or their nuclear program. That's all dictated by the clerics who hold the true power.
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/31/2008, -1/+21Actually the Iranian president is a bit more than just a mouthpiece. He's in charge of internal things like economic policy, appointment of ambassadors, governors, etc. but not foreign affairs, the military, or nuclear policy. It's the clerics that control all that.
- biggerx, on 05/31/2008, -4/+21Really though the amount of hate that is spewed out of this guys mouth has to shame every follower of Islam out there.
- pintomp3, on 05/31/2008, -3/+20Ahmadinejad was elected on a hawkish platform. Khatami, Iran's first reformist president, offered the US a truce, including recognition of Israel and suspension of nuclear activity. the response from the Bush administration was to ignore it and call Iran part of the "axis of evil". the Iranians responded by abondoning reform and electing Ahmadinejad. much like Bush, his sole platform was confrontation and his economic policies hurt the country. both countries will be better off without people like Ahmadinejad and Bush.
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -3/+18Too bad they can't get rid of the religious Islamic Mullahs that actually run the country and make religious laws.
- biggerx, on 05/31/2008, -3/+17FREE IRAN!!!!
- 55mph, on 05/31/2008, -12/+23bye bye Ahmadinejad. You won't be missed. (except by the neo-cons who want to use your inflamatory comments to attack your country.)
- ahoyhoy1, on 05/31/2008, -3/+13You know that the elections mean nothing right? He will still have to be approved by the Ayatola otherwise the election does not count.
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8The media didn't even tell us Hitler was the next Hitler!!
- burningmanstan, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8Ahmadinejad may have sent a letter. However the actual attempt to talk sensibly happened before Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005 and before Iran was part of the "axis of evil". Mohammad Khatami was president back then and he was more moderate and more reasonable about negotiations. Unfortunately Bush ignored any opportunity to even attempt to negotiate.
Iran is not a closed society like North Korea, many Iranians are just as pissed at Ahmadinejad as we are at Bush. Unfortunately we have them backed so far in a corner that I doubt many of them would elect someone as moderate as Khatami again. I really don't know much about this Larijani guy. - Tangaroa, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8Unfortunately, Iran is the kind of democracy where the Supreme Court and the Supreme Ruler for Life can and do ban liberal candidates from the elections for not being Islamic enough. Here's an article from this year about it:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-eas ... - FTWmovin2canada, on 05/31/2008, -2/+9Amadinejad is not Iran's most senior leader, nor does he control foreign policy. He is a leader who thrives on confrontation with the West, and would likely be weakened if U.S.-Iranian tensions were reduced.
- whatthefu, on 05/31/2008, -7/+14But...but...the media told me he was the next Hitler!
- MechaFalcon, on 05/31/2008, -2/+9Already? Dammit, I just got the hang of pronouncing his name.
- bdbr, on 05/31/2008, -4/+11I really don't think anyone is going to miss Ahmadinejad, even your so-called "Digg Hippies".
- u8eR, on 05/31/2008, -3/+9"Ahmadinejad's hold on power is slipping badly." What power?
- aseriesoftubes, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Even if Ahmadinejad gets removed the hardliners still seem very much in charge. They hold the whip hand constitutionally through the Council of Guardians and have a significant amount of real support from certain parts of the population. Still, it might help turn the temperature down a little on the rhetoric which can't be a bad thing...
- mrchekhov, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6dude. The guy is from *Iran* not *Iraq*. Iran=Persian/Farsi, Iraq=Arabic. Geez.
- Pillage, on 05/31/2008, -5/+11who will Obama have tea with now?
- ahoyhoy1, on 05/31/2008, -1/+6I just hope the next guy to be approved by the Supreme Leader Ayatolla Khamenei, turn out better then the last one.
I hope the Supreme Leader will pick a better talking puppet for himself. Ahamdinejad was just terrible. Someone like Tony Snow will be a good replacement for Ahmad, I just hope Ahamadidanajad doesn't go all Scott McClellan and reveal the secrets of Iran's government soon as the Supreme Leader fires him. - damnyooneek, on 06/01/2008, -1/+6Ahmadinejad is just a puppet he doesn't have much say is the actual policies in Iran. the clerics are the guys that really run the country.
- zephyear, on 05/31/2008, -2/+7of course they want to elect him out
they don't want to get bombed back into the stone age - kinerry, on 05/31/2008, -1/+5The president is just a PR role in Iran, the real power is with the supreme leader, the ayatollah.
- biggerx, on 05/31/2008, -4/+8"President Ahmadinejad is the only politician open to dialogue, and has made many attempts to do so with this administration."
As he yells death to America & lets wipe Israel off the planet. - RAEP, on 05/31/2008, -2/+6You make no sense. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they support evil people. In my case, however, it does since you probably support GW and are going to vote for McCain.
- mmmmmbiscuits, on 06/01/2008, -0/+4zing!
- gtluke, on 06/01/2008, -1/+5***** guy sucks!
- warnergt, on 06/01/2008, -1/+5Ahmadinejad was hand picked by the Iranian theocracy. Only the blessed individuals were allowed to run. There was no genuine vote.
- inactive, on 06/01/2008, -2/+6yes because the crazy iranians are just a ruse.... them having martyr suicide bombers and basij children kill themselves walking voer landmines, and supplying weapons to hezbollah, syria, and hamas... its all just fake news !!
It's all to make liberals seem like ***** who really help no one... but you saw through the plan... good on you!
.. *****! - sanman, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3Ahmedinejad's only in power because the ultra-religious Council of Guardians blocks serious rivals from running against him. He's only there as a puppet to divert heat off the Mullah-ocracy that really holds the reins of power in the country.
- phrenzy, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3for... doing what exactly? Or, does being an insane ***** now qualify as a justification for war?
- guive, on 06/01/2008, -2/+5You must be kidding !
- jasoninoakland, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4Perspective from my Iranian relatives: Ahmadinejad *does* have power, although not the sort he would like (in terms of setting values, waging war, etc.) That type of power is in the hands of Ayatollah Khamenei.
Ahmadinejad is supposed to administer the country from a more practical standpoint: managing the economy, tending to domestic issues. He's failed. Why? He's a poorly-educated idiot. He gravitates towards saber-rattling because that's the only thing he knows. As the article makes clear, he hasn't done much to improve the lot of Iranians.
Iranians do care far more about their own welfare than antagonizing the West, despite what the rent-a-crowds filmed for the news would have you believe. That's why there's popular dislike of Ahmadinejad, and why he's on his way out. - TheRealToma, on 05/31/2008, -2/+4Your keyboard just called, it wants you to hit the caps lock button again and call the exterminator. Theres a mouse next to it.
- tech42er, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Exactly, and hes becoming an embarassment to Khameini. The rulers of Iran need someone attacking the "Great Satan" to distract the Iranian people from their incompetence and the economy, but Ahmadinejad has just become an embarrassment.
- twomeyw23334, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2I'm not trying to be rude, I just seriously would like to have a better understanding of how some of you leftist Ahmadinejad sympathizer's minds work. I mean, did you even read the article or look to see what it was about or did you just see Ahmadinejad's name and feel the impulse to leave a positive comment on the man (regardless how irrelevant to the article).
As many of you also pride yourselves on equal rights for minorities, women, homosexuals and the like, how do you openly defend, at every possible chance, someone who has such different views?
What I figure is that the Bush derangement syndrome is so severe that you immediately take a liking to anyone who bashes the man, even if that person's ideological views are light years further from you own than even Bush's. I get the point, Bush sucks, but come on, I think you need to use your head and have rational limits.
And if you are going to leave such a comment, why write something like "he is the only politician." That immediately points out that you are a liar or extreme exaggerater. I would have to believe that there is at least one nice comment you could leave about the man without just pulling something out of your ass and making yourself look bad? - Osiriscky3, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2:facepalm:
- edebolt, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2It really sucks because Persians are great people but they got their country hijacked by these whack job Mullahs. Hopefully in my lifetime religious controlled countries become more secular and rational.
- saigumi, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure demanding Isreal be wiped off the map and its people slaughtered like pigs isn't exactly "open to dialogue".
http://www.adl.org/main_International_Affairs/ahma ... - twomeyw23334, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Have you heard of Hugo Chavez? He called Bush the devil, which makes him the real #1.
- 4321234, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3A-Rimma-Job
- CrushThemTorg, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Rent-a-crowd?! I want a rent-a-crowd.
I'd have them outside my house burning American flags and shooting AKs in the air. Then my friends would came by and asked what was going on, and I'd act like I had no idea. - inactive, on 05/31/2008, -4/+6I thought Muhammad did that job already?
- NelsonR, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2Remember Larinjani is also one of those despicable Nationalistic Conservatives so how do you make the distinction between him and Ahmadinejad? One will talk with the I.A.E.A. and the other avoids it. What is the difference? They both will build the bomb, they both will increased nationalistic rhetoric with confrontation with the world a given.
America by numerical superiority realize Republican conservatives have taken America to new lows, do the Iranian's wish to emulate, for the future, a continued conservative ignorant government? Don't think so, Iranians are human just like Americans and can only take so much crap. - burningmanstan, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3Ahmadinejad has only been president since 2005. He was preceded by the more moderate and less confrontational Mohammad Khatami. Using your logic one could argue that Bushs strategy caused hardline Ahmadinejad to be elected over more moderate opponents.
- easy4lif, on 05/31/2008, -2/+4I'll say no. the Ayatollah if the final word on all politics in that country. as long as he doesn't piss the Ayatollah off, he'll stay where he is.
