To secure the pathway for the TAPI oil pipeline. The TAPI oil pipeline begins in Turkmenistan, is currently being built through Afghanistan and is scheduled to pass through Pakistan and into India where it's oil can be shipped out and sold to larger economies.
If it wasn't for the need to transport all of the oil discovered in the Caspian Basin the US couldn't care less about Afghanistan and Pakistan.
