- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -79/+517These sick-minded ***** would have probably ended up doing similar here.
- mrharvey518, on 10/12/2007, -120/+473Disclaimer: This rape and murder of a young Iraqi girl is sickening and hopefully the people that did this will spend the rest of their lives in jail. I have no sympathy for these soldiers.
Clearly yes, if America had never invaded Iraq, American soldiers would not have been able to do this. Well played. But has everyone forgotten about Uday Hussein's rape rooms? How about the Iron Maiden that he kept in his torture chambers? And I'm sure all of you have forgotten about how he tortured the Iraqi Olympic soccer team when they failed to win the world cup. It sure is easy to hate America when your long term memory is so short. - polymorphist, on 10/12/2007, -77/+376Anyone surprised by this? They've done this in Japan, Korea, everywhere...
- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -16/+225All para-military forces, armies, police, etc attract a certain number of these types of nutjobs. This is not an American problem, this is a ***** in the head psyco problem and it is universal to all races...
- dordo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+158Let me start by saying that this is disgusting and if it were in my control he would be hanging at the gallows the very next day. Rape is obviously disgusting and as a fellow soldier I can't tell you enough how much it upsets me to see this from someone who wears the same uniform(Close enough I am Australian, same side). Makes me sick. We spend so much time trying to build up a positive reputation and get rid of scum like this. It saddens me to think that people will lump me and my buddies in the same category as this animal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+129I'm going to get dugg down for this. I was in the military for years (infantry, 11Bravo ground pounder). I joined when I was 17 yo with my parents permission. The US military is NOT populated with our nation's brightest, smartest, and moral youngin's. NCO ranks are typically populated with people who had little options coming out of high school, some with shady pasts and suspect behavior. It's only the strict military training that keeps most of them in check. Some grow out of it and step up to be great men and soliders...some don't.
Because I joined at such a young age I was able to leave the military life behind me after 6 years...because I didn't like what I saw.
Again, digg me down but the military is no different than the general population. Lots of dirtbags hiding away...it's not the perfect organization their propaganda claim it to be. Just live near a large military base for a few years and you'll see what I mean. - ropers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+102Quoth inbred:
"These sick-minded ***** would have probably ended up doing similar here."
Probably not.
War has a way of bringing out the very worst in in otherwise perfectly ordinary people.[1] Especially in eager and idealistic patriots who're put into impossible situations with conflicting roles and demands and their lives _constantly_ under threat (=extreme stress levels).
Trust me, I know: I'm German, and I've asked my grandparent's generation those painful and awkward "how could you/how could we" questions.
Do excuse what these US soldiers did? No. Do I seek to diminish their individual guilt? But I think they weren't born to become murderers either. The fact that not only they, but quite a few US troops became murderers has something to do with events that in would behoove the US public to feel collective guilt about. And ask those "how could we" questions. Admission is intensely painful, but remorse is the only road to redemption.
----
[1] The "ordinary people" aspect was very well exposed in the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Read what Hannah Arendt wrote about the "banality of evil". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Eichmann - sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -14/+108Of course this person has a definite problem with his mental stability the issue is that how can you do accurate metal screening for solders? After all at times your asking these men and women to kill with out remorse some one who has that type of capability my not be the most mentally stable person in the world.
- godofpumpkins, on 10/12/2007, -53/+143mrharvey518: saying that the old days weren't so good either isn't a justification. we've spent hundreds of billions of dollars, lost thousands of american lives and hundreds of thousands of iraqi lives, and alienated the international community. We'd better have a better justification for the war than "uhh it wasn't better before we got there."
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -51/+133"And this never would have happened if America never took military action there in the first place."
oh man, lets go one step further!
If his damn father never shot his man seed in his mom, this would have never happened! WHEN WILL THEY LEARN?! - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+78Agreed with Raid.
On a related note, all Muslims aren't terrorists, all Microsoft products don't suck, and all the initiatives proposed by any political party aren't always good.
Generalization is quick and easy. and entirely retarded. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+73You guys hadn't heard about this before? What rock have you been living under?
It's worse than you think, too. They'd planned it days in advance, and even visited the house. The sister who was shot was 5 years old. After they'd shot the 14-year-old-girl they poured gasoline on her head and burned her.
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article2293485.ece - jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -41/+102There are ***** up people everywhere, don't make everything a ***** anti-war statement. Some girls family were killed and she was raped and all you can do is turn it into political spin.
It's called humanity, look it up. - dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -14/+58No, those guys are definitely NOT America's finest. These people are the scum of our military, and so far one has been sentenced to a fitting punishment. Only a small percentage of America's finest are scum.
- dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Whatever man, your delusional.
Just remember, whatever hatred you have towards the war and whatnot should be directed towards the people in higher up positions. Most of the military, that remember has brought us to this day freedoms that most of the world has never known, are very upstanding, moral, life-loving people, who joined b/c they wanted to. Only a very small percentage are bad people like these. They went in to make a difference. So no its not propoganda, its truth. Most are America's finest. These people aren't, thats what I'm saying.
Don't lump people in like that. - b1gspender, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45Oh jesus. I get to the part where they raped a 14 year old and think how evil that is, then I realise that they shot her parents and a ***** FIVE YEAR OLD girl in the next room.
Jesus Christ who the ***** gave these morons a gun and a uniform in the first place!?. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36the lowered admission requirements aren't helping either, but when you need more meat for the grinder I guess quality isn't that big of an issue
- rAid135, on 10/12/2007, -42/+67People need to stop generalizing. The actions of one American soldier does not represent the whole American army
Support Our Troops - AlphAssassin, on 10/12/2007, -20/+42Why are so many of you criticizing the American government and their soldiers. These were to bad seeds that, had they not been in Iraq, would of (in all probability) committed these same crimes elsewhere. I do think they should be given the maximum punishment, and that one who was discharged should be charged as a soldier.
- thecompkid, on 10/12/2007, -31/+52Pfft, that's not nearly far enough.
Damn the Big Bang and the creation of the universe! Damn you both to hell! Think how peaceful the universe would be if it didn't exist! - Neoisamu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23That's an extremely offensive statement. I served for 8 years in the Army as an Infantryman and was depoyed to Kosovo before I got out. There are ***** like this in the service, in fact I even drove one to the Armory who told me he poisoned his Aunt's Coffee with grounded up rat poisen pellets in which I reported to my Chain of Command, I was questioned and the next day he was taken to the brig. There is Justice within the military (U.M.C.J.) and I'd say 95% adhere to it and seek to help people, not destoy them. So think about what you're about to post, prick.
- Tiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18you think this would be on the news instead of where anna nicole smith's body should be buried.
- ZoTheGorilla, on 10/12/2007, -31/+48That was Disgusting and Cowardly!!
I don't care if they are/were American or Iraqi, That is disgusting! And it takes some pretty sick minds to even carry something like that out.
Gang Rape of a 14 year old? Are you serious? Not Cool at All!!
I say ... An eye for an eye & tooth for a tooth.
They should get raped and killed, Spend the rest of their lives behind bars. - revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I did my time in the Navy during peace. I can't begin to imagine what it's like to be on the ground fighting in Iraq today. We are occupying a country where we are well hated. These kids are told to protect civilians, but, look out for terrorist, and they all look the same. I can only imagine the difficulty in carrying out such orders, staying vigilant, and somehow staying sane and rational. When you ask a normal person to do a crazy thing it can make them crazy. I'm not saying these guys shouldn't be punished to the full extent of first the UCMJ, and then Iraqi law. What I'm saying is that this should not be shocking because we are at war. These things do happen during times of war because soldiers get wound up so damned tight that it's mostly just a matter of time before they snap. Some are throwing flash-bangs at farmers to blow off a little stress here and there, and others are committing much greater atrocities.
It is my personal belief that if you support the war that you support every facet of it. That is why you don't see people come in calling the commenters unpatriotic. It's because they know that things like this are part of the package deal. When going to war, it's a good idea to remember all of the negative effects. There will be death, loss of money, and there WILL be atrocities. These things are the nature of war, so next time, before we start one, let's make sure that it's worth death, money, and all kinds of atrocities making us look bad before we get sand on our boots. - tmahmood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19But there is no problem generalizing all the Muslims as terrorists for some individual peoples action? Talk about double standard...
- dasluvaluva, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24I noted this quote:
"At first the US authorities blamed the attack on Iraqi insurgents. The truth emerged after members of Cortez's unit were kidnapped and beheaded by a Shiagroup last June in an explicit act of revenge. A unit member talked about it during counselling, sparking the investigation."
Honestly, the guys who did this deserved the beheading. I don't blame the "insurgents" for wanting to retaliate. But any side that targets children & women deserve a ball-chopping or worse. - Nickatnite101, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22call me crazy and digg me down but i do not think thats what he had in mind.
- ArchonSG, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23@b1gspender, @ godofpumpkins
And anyone else playing the "patriot blind support" crap ...
There is something more then just blind "patriotism" as you would call it, that marks a true patriot. This applies to any person of any nationality.
And that is, the knowledge and understanding of one's action, of what is right and wrong, the will to act for one's love of one's nation, and more importantly, the will NOT to act when it'll lead to the disgrace of one's nation.
Go fish somewhere else. - theturnmaster, on 10/12/2007, -12/+27I love how on Digg, a few soldiers actions characterize the whole war and every soldier fighting it.....
*rolls_eyes* - cocoamix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"These sick-minded ***** would have probably ended up doing similar here."
I somewhat doubt that. Being in a war-zone fighting an against a group is is routinely ridiculed and dehumanized by a large portion your peers and fellow citizens probably gives them a feeling that they can get away with doing things over there that they would never consider here.
Bottom line, some of these guys would never rape and murder old Jane Smith in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, but he thinks he could get away with it when it's just a "terrorist towel-head" and he's thousands of miles away from home.
We saw this at My-Lai 40 years ago. - AJH16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@jspegele
What is with people making jokes in the comments on articles like this. I mean, what is screwed up with your head that you are making jokes in a discussion about a 14 year old girl being raped and murdered after her entire family is murdered right next to her. Making jokes around a topic like that is sickening. Learn how to show some compassion and some taste. - GamingTrend, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Death penalty. Now.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Actually, the death penalty as a means to halt a psychopath is quite justifiable.
However, applying it to when someone has killed someone they're familiar with is usually not necessary. For example, if a woman kills an abusive or cheating husband, chances are, she's done killing. Not that there should be no punishment; it's just that the recidivism potential in that case is quite low, and anyone in a similar situation is not likely to be deterred by this person's fate, anyway.
As for "my tax money" going to waste, it costs a considerable amount to execute someone, too. - mikelieman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The DISGUSTING thing, is this wasn't just one lone crazy.
This was two guys, who didn't shoot the nutjob dead the moment he suggested the murder/rape R&R.
What's the world coming to when a Sargent doesn't shoot dead a ***** animal? - rprouse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15We heard about this on the news in Canada ages ago, before the US military was willing to investigate (coverup?).
It is a shame that Americans have to go to foreign news media to find out what their troops are up to. No wonder there are still a few people in the US who support the war. I guess the rest found the Internet and read the BBC or the CBC. When are you going to start holding your media and your government accountable? - GamingTrend, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16You think these guys can be brought back from this action to the normal folds of society? Let go of the tree....
- hamorim85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I don't know if any picked this up, but look at who's reporting this story.
The BBC....
Is there any American news on this... Or is this being censored from our Media...
and if there isn't any news on this, would it be right to assume they don't want this information out because it would hurt their arguments to stay in Iraq. - MaxTheSheep, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23While a lot of people in the service joined because they wanted too, there are those that joined because they had no other chance to actually make a living or get a college education. Because the military pays for your college, it's a very attractive offer for young people in this day and age.
And I agree. This guy is delusional. This rapist is not of America's finest, he's simply an enlisted soldier who is obviously ***** up in the head and will suffer for this. - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I completely agree. I hate Bush, I hate the war, and I hate everyone who calls me unpatriotic for hating the war. But c'mon! These are a couple of soldiers out of over a hundred thousand. There are much higher crime rates than this in the general population of EVERY COUNTRY! Now these guys were particularly sick and twisted, but blaming the entire military is just insane.
- wheaty, on 10/12/2007, -26/+38To everyone condoning an eye for an eye punishment on this guy.
Rape is not a crime of passion, it is a crime of power. When you wish rape on someone like this guy, you really become no better then him. He felt that girl deserved to be raped and you feel he deserves to be raped. He's obviously sick but if you are actually wishing rape on him then you are pretty god damn sick yourself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Or.. you know.. BBC...
- dawnfire999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Makes you wonder at how evil some minds are!! In all that period of madness did not one of the soldiers think of how terrible an ordeal the girl was going through?
I mean to know that your parents are being killed in the room next to where you are getting gang-raped!! Truly shocking! Words wont be able to explain it! - Netwatcher, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17It doesn't matter whether Iraq was right or wrong, this is what happens when you force same soldiers into the same combat theater over and over again, year after year, tour after tour.
Divorces, rapes, suicides, war crimes, etc have all increased over the last year and half, and it will only get worse.
It doesn't matter how mentally stable you are before you go into a situation like this, after a while even the strongest minds snap, and that's whats happening to our guys.
This war is over. Its just a matter of time before the people on top realize that bring our guys home. - Thuggish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You Sir or Madam, are a *****-bag.
For anyone defending their actions ... so are you. There is no excuse for rape. Ever. - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@mrharvey
So, that's how you're able to sleep at night? By reassuring yourself that are worst out there?
We (Americans) should be comparing ourselves to those greater than us, not vicious dictators. - Pfhreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12People who just "snap" don't engage in PRE-MEDITATED murder and rape.
- b1gspender, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17mrharvey518 said: "But has everyone forgotten about Uday Hussein's rape rooms? How about the Iron Maiden that he kept in his torture chambers? You judging everying from the lowest example you can drag up, or just when it suits you? You ever thought of actually having your own morals instead of looking for the most evil thing and just making sure you stay above that?
I aint forgotten there's some evil people in the world, and that makes these crimes better how? - zappo1776, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26Why does this surprise anybody? Wars aren't like a John Wayne movies. This happens in every war. This is why war should always be a last resort.
- erikbra81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I wonder what the probability is for US soldiers to get caught when they do stuff like this. If you look at incidents like Haditha, Ishaqi, Abu Ghraib, they have all been caught on tape. Commanders have been found on several occasions to destroy evidence. In Haditha, the Iraqi journalist that video-taped the US attack was jailed twice. All in all, it seems quite unlikely that a slaying of Iraqi civilians is 1) caught on tape, 2) the US army fails to capture and destroy or classify the tapes.
Still so many atrocities by US soldiers come up to the surface. One needs to think about the hidden numbers here. - combustion8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I support our non-raping troops
