- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14latest from ap- The Thai military blocked the area around Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's office with tanks Tuesday, witnesses said. Thaksin declared a state of emergency from New York as rumors of a military coup swept the capital.
Several hundred soldiers were deployed at government installations and major intersections in the capital of Bangkok, according to an Associated Press reporter.
Army-owned TV Channel 5 interrupted regular programming, playing patriotic music and showing pictures of the king. - GalacticCmdr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I guess you just kind of get used to that sort of thing after some time - like a numbing process.

^up-to-date site being updated as things happen.... - Dogx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I talked a couple times since the announcement to a friend of mine in Bangkok. He says it is not a tense atmosphere in the streets at all. There's been no curfew imposed and people are milling around on Sukhumvit Rd. (a main drag). He says everything is very civilized and "business as usual" since the announcement. He confirmed that CNN and BBC have been taken off the air.
- poxonyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thanks for doing it this way. There's less of a chance 20 different separate updates will be digged to the front page. I'm not sure what the deal is with the negative comments.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7thanks. i promise not to do the next one b/c i don't want to be bashed for cheap front page attempts. but i agree, this is a much easier way to stay on top of developing stories....
- ldma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The current thinking is that this Genral Sondit is a fairly level headed guy and is not in it for the power, but just to boot Toxin (as we expats call him) out. Their political system has been a shambles this year.
- danielwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Statement from the military reformist
The following is the statement from the military reform council.
There has been social division like never before. Each side has been trying to conquer another with all possible means and the situation tends to intensify with growing doubts on the administration amid widespread reported corruption.
State units and independent organisations have been politically meddled, not able to deliver their services as specified in the Constitution.
The administration is also usually bordering on "lest majest" actions against the revered King. Despite attempts from social units for compromises, there is no way to end the conflicts.
The revolution body thus needs to seize power. We have no intention to rule but to return the power to the people as soon as possible, to preserve peace and honour the King who is the most revered to all Thais.

- JesseJericho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The US would give a ***** because Thailand is in a perfect strategic position between North Korea and Iran... that and the fact that King Bhumibol Adulyadej is a US citizen, supporter, and military ally... who knows what kind of ***** they are cooking up.

An hour after news broke that tanks had rolled into the capital in a military takeover and television stations being seized, I had my first taste of a coup d’etat.
At The Nation office in the suburb of Bangna, 20 minutes from here, a group of heavily armed soldiers turned up at the newspaper office, where I am based as The Star correspondent.
They were there to "secure the newspaper building" where more drastic actions had been taken including taking control of seven Thai television and radio stations.
interesting first hand account..... - JivinJai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So, we know that CNN and BBC have been taken off the air. The Thai channels are alternating between patriotic songs and announcements from the coup leader (Gen. Sondhi). The announcements are:
Police / the army have seized control of Bangkok for our safety. Power will be returned to the people as soon as possible, and they apologize for the inconvenience.
The heads of the various departments of the government (including universities) are to report to the army headquarters at 9AM Wednesday morning.
The 20th of Sept. is declared as a national holiday. All government offices, banks, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand will be closed.
The powers of the prime minister are transferred to the leader of the coup (Gen. Sondhi). Power for various divisions are transferred to the permanent secretaries of those divisions.
The constitution has been suspended. Also suspended are the constitutional court, cabinet, senators and house of representatives. Other courts remain active.
--------------
Internet and telecommunications are supposed to be halted completely around 4AM (in half an hour) So yeah, apparently in an hour I won't have any internet or telecommunications of any kind. Yay. The people NOT involved in the coup will know more than those actually living in the damn country. Military says nation under martial law
Thailand's constitution suspended - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1054089
Thailand's army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin met with the nation's revered king immediately after declaring that he had staged a coup Tuesday against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
King Bhumibol has few legal powers but wields enormous influence over his people, who revere him with an almost god-like devotion that confounds outsiders more accustomed to the tabloid treatment of European royals.
further explanation of the king's role, influence, feelings of the populace, etc on the link - CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any coup would -have- to declare loyalty to the king to stand a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding. Thai's are pretty easy going up to the point that you insult their nationality or disrespect their king (or even pictures of him). If they thought for a minute that this coup was in opposition to the king, they'd rise up. (Including many of the non-commissioned officers and grunts in the military whose service is involuntary)
If the king supports this coup, I'll sleep soundly tonight.
However, from this side of the world it is hard to tell. I'm hopeful as the opposition leader is a co-conspirator but I'm worried as they've shut down the press and have disbanded the constitution. (Martial law was to be expected)
God keep my family safe and keep Thailand free. - kirkjaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh to make my point about how this will turn out for the worse no matter who take over the government, just look at the economic indicator response good job reformers !

Thai currency takes a beating
So far little ripple effect after the baht sinks, but investors who remember Asia's currency crisis are watching. - Tollboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My In-laws are immigrants from Thailand, when they talked to family over there they said that all the news stations have been shut down and that the tanks are all over Bangkok. They told everyone to stay inside their houses, but they also believed it was a good thing, for the most part, that the PM was being pushed out of office. If i get any inside stuff ill post in this comment section.

I also wanted to try to go there again maybe in the fall..... I guess I'll just give up.
